After a much anticipated wait, I’m excited to today be launching a brand new website and branding for Erin King Photographer which I wanted to let you all know about. My old site was getting fairly outdated, almost to the point where I couldn’t bear to work on it any longer, as was my logo which I had been using since starting my business. I now have a new look which is fresh, fun and feminine and I think reflects me and my style to kick off my business in 2012. Check it out here!

Along with the new website and logo you might see some new marketing materials with regular offers making their way around and about and this also includes my new bi-monthly newsletter. My newsletter acts as a way to keep in touch with my clients, friends and people I have met going about my business to share my imagery, stories, business ideas and probably the most important aspect, myself. Please let me know if you would like to be added to my mailing list if you aren’t already. To compliment this I’ve also revised and refreshed my photography collections for both weddings and pets to better align with the demand for what products people prefer.

I really hope to make a bit more of a dent in the Melbourne market this year and start generating more business, with a much more focused direction. I hope to continue to gain your following and support and am hopeful for the future business of Erin King Photographer.

Just recently I’ve had news that three of the pets from the sessions I photographed last year have just passed away, two of which were on Boxing day! It’s really sad news, but in most cases the dogs were in their later stages of life and had truly lived their lives to the fullest having been part of a caring and loving family. Looking back on the photos and remembering the sessions it really makes me sad and brings a tear to my eye just thinking about the close relationship these lovely people had with their dogs. I know I would be a complete mess if anything ever happened to my Peanut! However what makes it all worth while is the rewarding feedback I’ve received about how precious the images are to these families, now that they no longer have their special pet with them.

Wendy (pictured below with dog Cooper) wrote me this message: “Hello Erin, I would once again thank you for your wonderful photos of our dogs, Cooper, Nelly and Tammy. Sadly we had to put Cooper our German Shepherd down this Boxing Day 2011, he was very treasured to us. Your photos will be a fantastic memory for us to keep forever. He will never be forgotten. Thank you again.”

You might recall my post about Lauren and her Labrador, Bindii, who had lost a lot of her mobility due to arthritis in her old age, view the full post here. Bindii was also put down on Boxing day at a grand old age of 17! Lauren had put a lot of her time and effort into caring for Bindii in her old age and ensuring she still got the chance to live a happy and full life. Lauren is really passionate about raising the awareness of caring for senior dogs. She believes that limited mobility doesn’t mean limited happiness in life and there’s no reason to cut their lives short if they aren’t in pain. Lauren and Bindii’s relationship really did touch me and I am truly in awe of the commitment she made to caring for Bindii. Lauren can now take comfort in knowing she did all she possibly could to give Bindii the best life possible.

Lauren says: “I do feel an overwhelming comfort knowing that her beautiful portraits watch over me whilst I sleep – I have you to thank for that. Another photo is being framed and placed on the cupboard behind where her bed sat. Your work will provide a gorgeous reminder of Bindii to me and the rest of the family too.”

Trish, Lauren’s sister, provided these kind words: “The photos are a constant reminder of the special bond that Bindii and Lauren shared and we won’t ever stop looking at them. You really did capture Bindii’s personality and the relationship between Bindii and Lauren. Lauren will be forever grateful to you.”

Thanks Wendy, Lauren and Trish for your amazing comments and continual support. I am very sad and sorry to hear about the passing of your pets. Our pets are part of the family too and I believe they should be remembered as such. Unfortunately they aren’t often with us for long enough but we can preserve their memories and value them in our hearts forever through their photos.

It’s an age old debate whether Canon is better than Nikon and vice versa but once you choose one you generally stick to it. The rivalry between Canon and Nikon Photographers is often played out with frequent and amusing arguments as to why one is better than the other….

I’ve always been a Canon user but have recently found that I haven’t been 100% happy with the results. So with a lot of research, talking to other photographers and trying out the gear I decided to make the change and I am happy to say that I am now a Nikon user! So far I am very happy with the user interface and the whole functionality of the camera body, which in my opinion is much easier to use and just makes more sense. I feel that this is what works better for me, its not a case of one necessarily being better than the other but it’s personal preference. I treated myself this Christmas and this is now my new kit. I’m looking forward to a fresh start to the new year with all new equipment and welcoming 2012 with my coming projects of re-branding and refreshing my business model.

This is more of a personal related post, but I figure I am my brand and my business, so why not share a bit about me personally and what I’ve been getting up to. Last week my dad and brother were over visiting from NZ, so I’ve been playing the local Melbourne tourist and tour guide for the week. They came over for the Spring Racing Carnival and the Melbourne Cup and this was a very important family day for us this year. Originally my step-mum, Annette, was attending who sadly passed earlier this year after a brief battle with cancer. My dad wanted to honor the trip and pay homage to Annette, who would have wanted us all to still go along. Along with Annettes daughter Kelly and partner Iri (who you might remember I photographed earlier in the year), we made it a family day and a day of celebration and remembrance. It was my first time attending the Melbourne Cup day and I must admit after everything I had heard, especially the horror stories about GA, it was actually rather tame but a really great day and for the first time I managed to back the winning horse, Dunaden, in the cup race! Stoked about that! We had some of the best seats in the house directly across from the finish line with a perfect view. These photos were mostly taken my partner Chris with our new Fuji X100 digital cameras, which I will be posting all about soon also.

Today Project Sunday launches their new online clothing store. I worked in collabration with Project Sunday to produce all the photography of their garments as well as some more illustrative fashion shots. They sell niche fashion styles that you would normally see in quirky little tucked away boutiques around Asia, only now it’s available here in Australia! Their clothing embodies a softness and nostalgia catering to the dainty and artistic, eclectic type person. These shots were taken at Cloudehill Gardens up in Olida, Sassafras which really is a beautiful location well worth a visit! Thanks also to our beautiful model Georgia Kelly who really did the clothing justice and was an absolute pleasure to work with. Make sure you check it out if you need a new summer wardrobe!

They don’t call them the terrible two’s for nothing! I spent the better half of this afternoon literally chasing around the darling little Pheobe who was having an absolute blast exploring the Carlton Gardens with her mum Robyn. Ordinarily I don’t have a lot to do with children myself and people who know me will know that I don’t really consider myself to be very maternal and children probably aren’t on the cards for me (with the exception of my Peanut of course) so I didn’t quite know what to expect out of a two year old. Turns out however it’s not that dis-similar to photographing pets, which I do often. It takes a certain patience, a lot of exuberance and stamina, and a lot of running around! But it’s all worth it for a little bit of fun spent capturing the essence of childhood. Pheobe immediately took a liking to the park and especially the water fountain. I’m sure she could have spent hours just finding things to be able to throw into the fountain and watch get sprinkled with water and float away.

Robyn and her husband Tony run our local cafe, ‘Miss Marmalade‘ in Brunswick, where we often indulge ourselves for breakfast and she has been a great support to me and my photography business (it also helps that she just adores Peanut). Having seen some of my work, she approached me to photograph her daughter Pheobe, which I was immediately thrilled about. Miss Marmalade is a cafe where yummy mummies, children and pets are always welcomed and they have a very unique to Brunswick menu. Make sure you check it out sometime and in the meantime here’s some shots of Pheobe.

This week I took part in the Xmentors two day wedding photography workshop which was run by XSight Photography with the two award winning photographers Nick Ghionis and Rocco Ancora. On day one we were all driven around Melbourne on a double decker bus and what a way to break the ice! It was on the edge of your seat (literally) kind of fun as this bus attempted to make it’s way through Melbourne streets almost taking down power cables, overhead tram lines and the many trees lining the streets on the way. It certainly made for good entertainment, filling the bus with laughter (or now that I think about it, that may have been panic) enabling this group of talented strangers to bond. It was a jam packed day where they set up the different parts of a real wedding day scenario around different areas of Melbourne. Day two went over what was shot on day one, with image processing and output with album creation. It was really great to meet other Australian based like minded photographers and learn some of Nick and Rocco’s tricks of the trade when it comes to photographing a wedding. We were taken through posing, lighting, planning and much more.

I always leave these workshops feeling motivated and inspired with so many new business ideas to implement into my work flow. I find attending workshops and seminars a great way to stay current, learn new things and get an insight into what other photographer’s are doing to be successful in their business and photographic methods. It’s also a great way to meet new people, make new friends and network, network, network.

Many thanks to Nick, Rocco, Sharifa and our beautiful bridal models Kasha and Vic for putting on a very fun and educational event. Here are some of the images I shot of the set ups throughout the day.

It was an absolute stunner Melbourne day, not a cloud in the sky, nor a breeze in the air. A day well worth being spent at the beach and what better beach than down at Port Melbourne. A perfect spot for dogs at this time of year as over winter they are allowed off lead and on the beach. Beth had the most fun on her photo shoot at her favourite place to spend a hot day.

Lauren and Bindii share a unique bond. They have been together almost all their lives as Lauren is 21 and has had Bindii since a puppy. Bindii is now getting on a bit and in her old age can no longer walk due to losing the function of her back legs from arthritis. Lauren is now the only person who is dedicated to currently looking after their family dog. I really take my hat off to Lauren as I’m sure being a 21 year old mean’s there are a lot of other pressing issues to attend to and dedicating so much of her time to look after Bindii, must really take a toll on her social life and study. Lauren is taking time out to ensure Bindii has the correct medication and bedding, as well as taking her out for walks in her wagon. Just having to move Bindii and carry her around is effort enough, and Bindii is not a small dog, but Lauren just takes it in her stride. I just love the relationship that these two have and really admire Lauren for trying to keep Bindii healthy and making her comfortable and most importantly happy for the time she has left.

This week I attended a pro photography seminar on wedding photography where there were 3 guest speakers – Hilary Wardhaugh, Dan O’Day and Samm Blake all of who shared their knowledge of working in the industry with the aim to inspire us all. Well inspire they definitely did, talk about wanting to get those creative juices flowing! With this blog post I wanted to touch on some of what was talked about to get us inspired (I will blog about the client stuff later) and I thought if I put this all down in writing it will help to encourage me to get started on some new creative outlets and start a plan of action.

Being a photographer is being an artist and we always need to find ways to “exercise the creative”. We do this by finding things that inspire and influence us and using these to explore, develop and deliver our originality. By always being “switched on” – aware of our surroundings and situations…SEEING…and how we can represent this through photography – we will be able to define our style, incorporate our personality and as a result stand out from the crowd. Really makes you think huh? Thanks to Samm I have some great little tasks to take away with me and do in my own time. For example (and this is one which would be great for anyone who likes to set goals) 101 images that represent the things in life you want to do or achieve…think inspiration board. Make a collage and print it out and have it framed on your wall. This will always act as a reminder and will encourage you to do the things you want to do and reward you for what you have done. Plus it’s something fun and challenging – see how long it will take you to get to 101 things.

One key message was, that in doing all these little things (and I say little as they don’t have to be big or complex projects) you will get to know your true self and in turn be true to yourself. You will be encouraged to follow your heart and this will then come through in your imagery. I must admit I feel so empowered just writing about this, so just imagine what it will feel like to get out and do it. At the end of the day it’s about ALWAYS shooting, experimenting and pushing yourself to create better imagery.
