OLD TIMER BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have begun a new blog that I am calling Old Timer. I will be writing mostly about baseball and other sports, with perhaps a few thoughts about various forms of recreation and entertainment. If you have any interest in such topics, I hope you will come by for a look and maybe a few ideas of your own regarding the issues surrounding the teams and games.

NEW BOOK CLUB FORMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A good friend of mine has decided to put together a
Book Club gathering of bloggers each month. She will post a book for any one who is interested in participating to read by the 25th of the month. Then each participant will post his or her report on the book on their own blog, with a link to the book club site. My friend will include links back to the various posts so that the participants can peruse the other posted reports.

The book to be read for the month of April is To Kill A Mockingbird. I have not read it since high school, so I will pick up a copy at the library and give it a reread.

The whole idea sounds like fun to me, and of course, the more the merrier!

MOTHER GOOSE & GRIMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have daily home delivery of the Houston Chronicle. Except on Sunday, I like to start my day with the paper, but I usually only read the sports page and the funny papers. One of the comics I check every day is Mother Goose and Grimm. It often has a new twist on old thoughts or phrases. I often laugh. Today was one of those. I thought you might enjoy the laugh and start reading the funnies, if you are not in the habit.

IZEA RANKINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IZEA, parent company of Pay Per Post, has developed a ranking system for blogs. The Real Rank is intended, at least in part, to help establish value for advertisers using PPP to promote their products. Google has decided that any blog posting links to an advertiser somehow diminishes their strength, so they removed all page ranks from such blogs. It has resulted, at least for the blogs I had that were very productive now receiving almost no offers. I am trying to get the Izea Rankings to work for me, so I can do more work for them. I am anxious to get back on a better footing with the advertisers.

NAKED NATURALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My hair is long gone, so my wife was the one to use the samples of naked naturals shampoo and conditioner we received in the mail. It was a welcome product for my bride because her hair is very fine, and as she is aging, she feels the need to use products that will strengthen it. She read the claims that the the ingredients in the products have been clinically proven to make hair up to seven times stronger by working inside out. It is the only shampoo that makes such a claim.

So she gladly experimented with the samples, which contain Citrus and Keravis, but no harsh chemicals. The key to the benefits of Naked Naturals is the Keravis, a plant protein. My wife has long been a proponent of natural shampoo and other products that use nature's own ingredients. It just makes sense to her functionally and ecologically.

Her first use of the products from the one time sample size left her hair looking nice, but she was unwilling to say conclusively that it was the answer to her quest for the right product for her. But she will be using the coupon that came with the samples for a discount on bottles of the products when she goes to the local Walgreens later today!

CARNIVAL VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I took our seven and eight year old grandsons on a seven day cruise of the Eastern Caribbean on the Carnival Victory. We sailed out of Miami, making ports of call in San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. We had a very comfortable balcony suite that slept four on the Upper Deck level. We had late seating in the Pacific dining room, and had wonderful waiters; Clarence from St. Vincent and Adrian from Indonesia. They were especially kind to the boys.

The food was good and there was lots to do on the boat when we were at sea, includnig Camp Carnival sessions for the kids at no extra charge. The boys most enjoyed the 80 foot water slide!

Dragon Speak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My computer has been down for the last few days, and when I got problems figured out, at least most of them, I could not launch my voice recognition software. I went to nuance.com, who produces the software called Dragon Speak. I found out if there is a problem between Windows XP and Dragon Speak. The fix was very quick and now I am testing the software and it seems to be working fine again.

CHEAPERTHANHOTELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My travels around the world have not yet taken me to England. But ti is one of the places I would love to visit, to take my wife for a holiday. We would like to see the the major attractions, like Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, and the Tower Bridge. But while making one of the London hotels our base, we would also like to attend the theater and catch some of the local music.

But if my wife has her way, we will not simply stay in one lace but move around to perhaps a selection from Oxford Street hotels, Kensington hotels, or Knightsbridge hotels. Maybe one of each. The reason is she wants to take full advantage of the shopping districts. She wants to come home with a shopping bag from an exclusive shop on Oxford Street, but she also wants to do some serious shopping in the more relaxed environment of Knightsbridge and Kensington.

PILGRIM'S PRIDE Chicken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently accepted an opportunity to post a blog with a link to a Chicken Restaurant chain. I had to come up with an alternative way to cook chicken. I went by the store and picked up some boneless, skinless chicken tenderloins for my props.

I did not use the method of cooking I suggested in my You Tube Movie, but grilled it instead. It was very good, better than the Tyson brand we normally use. And it was cheaper too! Funny how things work out.

WATERHORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just took my grandsons, 7 & 8, to see the movie The Waterhorse. It is a true tale of the Loch Ness monster as told by an eyewitness to the events around the creature during the second World War. It is a fun story and has little that would discourage even the most protective parent from taking the kids to see. The boys were delighted and I enjoyed the afternoon contemplating monsters and magic!

Santa got rave reviews at our house for his work on Christmas Eve. Our six and eight year olds that live with us full time were excited with the number, the selection and the quality of their gifts. The younger was very satisfied with the 20 inch bicycle and his big boy Bible. The older loved his roller blades and his video game. And both loved their LOUD toys, a Warplane for the younger and a Tank for the older.

SWEENEY TODD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Depp has had so many good roles in the movies that it is hard to select just one or two as his best. He is capable of playing comedy roles, and dramatic roles, and is especially good at sinister roles. Choosing my favorite of his movies is really not so hard, I suppose. I believe the best movie he has done was Finding Neverland, which came out in 2004.

In that movie Depp portrayed a playwright, J. M. Barrie, who produced the timeless children’s classic Peter Pan. Maybe my love for Finding Neverland is based on the fact that one of the first movies I ever saw, nearly 60 years ago, was the animated Peter Pan from Walt Disney. I still love to watch it with my grandsons But in Finding Neverland, I was especially moved by the scenes of Depp playing with and developing the imaginations of the Davies boys, with whom he had fallen in love, as well as with their widowed mother. He taught the boys how to believe, and through the tragedy that beset his beloved, Barrie also learned to believe.

While I did not particularly enjoy the character of Jack Sparrow, I thoroughly enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean II, because it was set in my favorite place in the world, the island of Dominica. So I loved watching Sparrow run across beaches being chased by natives upon which I have bathed, and run across coconut groves through which I have walked. It made the movie really alive for me.

Depp's new movie, Sweeney Todd, is coming out this week. From the trailer that I have seen, it appears that Depp is going to play another somewhat sinister character who is out for revenge over the injustices done him and his loved ones. This children's book is designed to deepen the readers devotion to God by giving stories from Scripture in kid-friendly terms. Each day's entry is introduced with a verse from the Bible, followed by the story? Then the child is asked a question that helps apply the point of the story. My wife’s mother has been in deteriorating health for about five years, but in recent weeks she has had to be in the hospital several times and her strength is waning. She has been living alone and does not want to give up her independence with her 80th birthday just over a month away. But she cannot walk without the assistance of a walker now, and she has fallen twice in the past month.

My wife and her brothers are trying to convince their mom that she should either move in with one of them or move into one of the care homes near her neighborhood. ButterFinger Crunchers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently was in a local dollar store, where I saw what I thought was a package of eight miniature Butter Finger candy bars for a dollar. But I did not read carefully enough, they were a new product, Butter Finger Crunchers. Here is one vote to leave well enough alone. These taste like the Nutty Buddy bars produced by Little Debbie. They are all right, but they do not get close to as good as Butter Finger.

READING TUTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in an area where there are a large number of Vietnamese residents. The parents it these families came to America as refugees who spoke little or no English. Their children are bright, but lack the skills to really succeed in school. Reading Tutors, like those at Score Learning Centers have been of invaluable service to these youngsters who only need a chance to shine.

A friend of mine has just begun a new blog called Life's Little Commentary. The blogger is a young father so there will probably be observations about raising kids. He is fascinated by new technologies, so I imagine he will write about the toys he has gotten or wants to get. He loves life, so we will no doubt hear about the things he enjoys as he discovers new avenues of fun.

THE MIST by Stephen King!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow will see the arrival of The Mist by Stephen King in movie theaters across the country. I just watched the trailer online and it looks to be a chiller. The premise has to do with sinister mist that envelops a community and drives a large portion of the population into one location. As the mysterious activities begin to unfold, so do the personalities of each of the characters in the movie.

I hope that I am never put face to face with a phenomenon that is inexplicable, especially in the company of a lot of people I do not know. I have not had any similar experiences to those in the film, where sheer terror prevails. When I was a young boy visiting my grandparents and other relatives in northeastern Arkansas, it was not uncommon for the family to be awakened in the night and hurried to the storm cellar because of the threat of a tornado, something like the scene in the Wizard of Oz. My uncle would stand in the door of the cellar and scan the sky, obviously concerned. His mother had been killed in a tornado. But I did not understand his anxiety at the time.

But on my thirty fifth birthday, I may have gotten a taste of his fear. We had boarded up our house against the approaching Hurricane Alicia. We decided not to evacuate, despite the fact that we were only about 11 miles from Galveston Bay. We thought the storm would make a turn and go away from us. So my brother and sister in law and their five children came to our home to get away from their mobile home. That made twelve of us in the house.

The storm did not veer and came directly over us. For hours the winds blew and rain fell. Our lights went out around ten o'clock that night. When the winds began to make the house tremble, I stood looking out at the night through a small opening in the boarding. I thought back to my uncle. My brothers wife got a bit loud in her expressions of concern, until I asked her not to scare the kids.

When the eye passed over the house, there was a frightening stillness for about half an hour, but nothing as dramatic as The Mist . I am glad that is just a movie.

SmithHeart's Restaurant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning I was at a meeting in Angleton, Texas. When the meeting was breaking up, a group of us went together to a local restaurant called SmithHeart's. It has a nice menu at an affordable price and we received very cordial service. I chose a steak finger basket and was very pleased with the meal. The meat was real round steak, and the gravy was thick and creamy. I will try them again.
