I shoot timelapse footage and make short films with them and this time I wanted to have a story incorporated in the short.

Now I am editing the film and I guess it will be ready in March.

This short film is full of life; the very beautiful places and landmarks of Istanbul, city life, traffic, sea traffic, ferries and boats and ships in Istanbul, towers, mosques and architecture, sunsets, chaotic nature of the city etc.

I also made some extra color grading on the piece which happened to be more contrasty and bright, which was what I wanted in the black-white version.

I am very happy to hear beautiful comments about FLOW. People feel it is relaxing and meditative in some way. This is why I like shooting timelapse so much; you can rise up from our general view of time and look at it from a wider perspective and start to understand the flow of life which is almost never predictable and always in a state of chaos but every moment it takes another form where we can see a new order.

Life is total magic! Undescribable. We are only observers…

It was cold, snowy, windy and cloudy. The clouds were spectacular that I had no chance but to photograph them. I was looking from every window of the house to see if there was any special sky that time and when I saw it I placed my tripod, set up the camera and shoot it.

I also had walks to the close area in search of good photographs. There weren’t so many special views but sky was generally so exciting that I had lots of clouds time lapses.

Being with my notebook, I was not able to edit these footage fast enough so I just copied the frames to a disk and postponed editing until I got back to my home and my powerful desktop computer. In fact, I was thinking that I didn’t have very nice footage but when I edited the frames and saw the final footage, I was surprised with the outcome, I really loved what happens with clouds here. Scenes were simple but clouds made their play and their movements were really enjoyable. And there were enough footage to make a short video.

Only thing that was negative is the sensor dust on my camera. It was hard times for the machine before shooting these and I didn’t have the chance to have it cleaned. And so when I shot with high apertures, sensor dust became “very” visible which makes me very sad. But no big problem, I like the final product with those dust

All of these were shot on my visit to my family so I decided to dedicate this film to my beloved family!

Shot on several days in 2 weeks.
10-22, 24-105 and 70-200 lenses were used.
Edited in Lightroom, After Effects and Premiere.

Daha sonra bu kareler After Effects veya Premiere gibi bir yazılım aracılığıyla sekanslar haline getiriliyor. Bütün planlar aynı metodla hazırlandıktan sonra da montajlanarak son halini alıyor.

Bu video yaklaşık 10 bin kare fotoğraftan oluştu. Neredeyse tamamı RAW formatında çekildi. Bu işin zorluklarından biri de, bütün bu dosyaların kapladığı disk alanı. Bu sorunu hafifletebilmek için bulduğum yöntem, arşiv olarak saklamayı düşünmediğim planları video formatında kaydettikten sonra, orjinal dosyaları silmek oldu. Başka türlü, timelapse -ve özellikle HDR timelapse- çekmek için terabaytlarca sabit disk gerekir. Bu da inanılmaz bir saklama alanı yaratıyor.

Aslına bakarsanız, bu kısacık filmi daha uzun ve detaylı yapmayı istiyor ve planlıyordum fakat biliyorsunuz ki camiilerin çoğunda çekim yapmak yasak. Yasak olmasa bile, timelapse çekmek için bir plan başına yaklaşık 20-30 dakika boyunca yüzlerce fotoğraf çekmek gerekiyor. İnsanların namaz kıldığı ve sessizliğe ihtiyaç duyduğu bir ortamda devamlı deklanşör sesi duymalarından rahatsız olmamaları mümkün değil. Ayrıca, benim için bu bir “kendini geliştirme” projesi olduğundan çok da detaylı ve planlı değildim ve bir yerde benim için yeterli olduğunu düşünüp bıraktım. Şimdi bu deneyimle daha planlı ve sağlıklı başka projeler üzerine yoğunlaşabilirim.

HDR timelapse ilginç ve farklı görünse de, her tür çekim için uygun bir teknik değil, bu tekniği uygulamanın mantıklı olabilmesi için ortamın çok kontrast içermesi ve ışık-gölge oyunlarının etkileyici olması şart. Bu koşullar yoksa HDR ile uğraşmak gerçekten zaman kaybı demek bana göre. Ayrıca, HDR kullanımını abartıp, aşırı belirgin kullanmak da görsel kaliteyi düşürüyor ve hatta ucuz bir görüntü oluşmasına sebep olabiliyor.

I started to shoot these mosques to experiment with HDR Timelapse technics and editing the footage.

There are some good and bad final results but it was a good experience for me. I wanted to shoot more footage from the inside of the mosques but it is forbidden and there are always people inside which I did not want to disturb. So I decided to finish it there and left it to another time.

Some moments of Melis and Arda before they got married.
We shot this timelapse sequences at Taksim and Galata in Istanbul with my friend, photographer Burak Barutçu. It became a very fun and energetic video with the help of Melis and Arda’s lively natures. Have fun watcing!
