Pre-Fishing Trip Rituals: Vancouver Escape Room

It’s hard not to get overly excited as the days get crossed off the calendar. And no—I’m not talking about counting down to the holidays. I’m talking about marking X’s as my fishing trip with Escott Sportsfishing gets nearer and nearer.

Before my four days at Escott Lodge with my friends begin, I also always make sure to get in some quality time with the family. It used to be enough to take the kids for an afternoon at Granville Island’s Kids Market, but now that they’re getting older, it’s time to kick the pre–fishing trip tradition up several notches.

The best thing I’ve found for this year is a session at a Vancouver escape room—the latest entertainment craze. Since my kids are well into the scary stuff (just like the old man), it’s got to be Krakit Escape Game for us.

Located right by Lougheed Town Centre Skytrain station, Krakit offers rotating horror-themed escape rooms, including the Zombie Apocalypse, the Asylum, and the Saw Room (and they’re happy to adjust the scare level, if any little ones aren’t up to full fright level yet).

The only bad part about playing an escape game with the kids is facing the fact they might solve the puzzles before I do. But being outwitted by a nine-year-old is well worth it when it means we all get to jump into an experience together—in a way a movie night just can’t provide.

By adding a pre-trip tradition to my yearly fishing trip, I get to make some serious memories both with my friends as we haul in salmon after salmon, and at the same time I get to cement some special moments with the family as well. (And it’s certainly makes them as excited for my annual trip to Escott Sportfishing as I am.)

Before I know it, the boys will be old enough to take part in both parts of the tradition: the pre-trip family time and the fishing adventure in beautiful Haida Gwaii.

While there’s never a bad time to take a Haida Gwaii fishing trip, there’s an undeniable pull toward those long days of summer, when the Chinooks are plentiful and so are the sun’s rays.

Haida Gwaii and Graham Island, where Escott Lodge is located, have some of the best salmon fishing in the world throughout the summer months. So, while we trudge our way through February, we’ll whet our appetites for the great season that’s to come by remembering some of last summer’s best moments.

Every angler has their own reason for loving fishing, whether it’s the thrill of the chase, getting to be outdoors all day, or frying up the catch at home. But there’s another big reason that people head out onto the water: fishing is relaxing.

Although the word “relaxing” may seem at odds with the image of a fisherman fighting a massive Chinook salmon for an hour or two before getting it onto the boat, that is only one aspect of the sport. Because sportfishing takes you out on the water for hours at a time—often the whole day—there’s a lot of downtime between such battles.

These moments between tugs on the line are also what fishing is known for. In fact, the most common reason people fish is to relax, according to the American Sportfishing Association.

While waiting for the next battle, an angler can allow their mind to wander—but not too much, because you need to be able to react when the bite does come. This makes fishing an activity similar to mowing the lawn or painting a wall. That is, it engages part of your brain, but it doesn’t always engage all of it. You need to pay attention, but you don’t need to pay it all of your attention.

This makes fishing the perfect set up for letting your mind wander—and often the type of situation that gives rise to Eureka moments.

Not only does fishing give you time with your own thoughts, but the constant casting and reeling means it’s a repetitive activity. Repetitive activities are stress busting. And diverting attention to repetition is not only mentally soothing, but actually releases physical tension too.

The Fishing Seasons of Haida Gwaii

Beautiful Haida Gwaii is known for many things.

The undeniably stunning scenery, a decidedly relaxed way of life, the distinctive art of the Haida people, and its varied and lush wildlife. We’ve got humpback whales, bald eagles, harbour seals, and even spirit bears. But of most interest to Escott Sportfishing and our guests is—of course—the innumerable fish that populate its waters.

Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is considered to have some of the best salmon fishing grounds in the world. Made up of over 150 islands and classed as a temperate rainforest zone, the Haida Gwaii, with its many protected bays and kelp beds, couldn’t be more welcoming to salmon, halibut, and other game fish that end up on the business end of our fishing poles.

Millions of Chinook and Coho swim through the island chain on runs that take them south from Alaska to their home waters to breed. Masset, where Escott’s Haida Gwaii fishing lodge is located, essentially sits in the middle of this fish superhighway. Different species of salmon run at different times of year, with the Haida Gwaii salmon season spanning all the way from May until September.

But Tyees aren’t the only giants that swim these waters. Halibut hang about Haida Gwaii all year long, usually choosing to stay in waters much deeper than the salmon. Still, Escott’s hali fishing grounds are located only a half-hour boat ride from the Lodge, where depths plunge as deep as 275 feet.

If you book your Haida Gwaii sportfishing trip for September, there’s also opportunity to catch yet another of the prized fish that call these waters home—steelhead, otherwise known as rainbow trout.

With different species of quality sport fish swimming these waters all year round, there is no question why Haida Gwaii is known as a fisherman’s paradise.

From Coho to Chinook: The Many Salmon of Haida Gwaii

Located on the West Coast of Canada, the Haida Gwaii of British Columbia have some of the best salmon fishing in the entire world. The reason the fishing is so good is because the island chain comes early on in the fish’s migration from the Arctic southward. Escott Lodge, which sits on the northern tip of Graham Island, is in the middle of all this frantic salmon activity, with the sportfishing season running from early May until the end of September.

Though they all pass along the BC coast, there are five different Pacific salmon species that inhabit the waters Escott trawls, and each salmon has its own season, behaviour, and appeal.

Chinook

The main salmon people come to come to Masset to land is the Chinook. Also known as the King salmon, the Chinook grows to the largest size of all the species—hence its royal nickname. These fish live the longest (up to 9 years) and can weigh in at over 100 lbs, although most average closer to the 20 lb mark. Anything over 30 lbs is classed as a “Tyee”—the ultimate trophy for any fishing trip. Chinooks start appearing around Haida Gwaii in early May and stick around until mid-August.

Coho

Another fish that lures anglers to the BC coast is the equally mighty Coho. It doesn’t match the Chinook in size, coming in at an average 10 to 15 lbs, but many prefer the more mild taste of Coho (a.k.a. Silver salmon) for eating fresh. Easy to identify by their hooked upper jaw, the acrobatic Coho are in season from early July until the end of September.

Chum, Sockeye, and Pink

Though Chinook and Coho are what many sport fishermen are after, the most abundant salmon in the Pacific are Pink, Chum, and Sockeye. Pink salmon are the smallest of the bunch (4 to 6 lbs) because they have the shortest lifespan, living 3 years maximum. Chum and Sockeye share the same long and thin profile, but while Sockeye average 7 lbs, Chum grow to up to 25 lbs.

No matter what salmon ends up on the end of your line, Escott Sportfishing will make sure it’s properly prepared for your table or released back into the ocean to continue on its way south.

Making Waves: Today’s Women Anglers

Although popular culture often paints a masculine picture of sports fishing, in reality, women make up around 30% of the angler population in North America. And, according to survey results from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, that number is growing.

Another impressive statistic is that women hold a disproportionately large number of fishing records—and especially salmon fishing records. Perhaps the most famous women salmon angler is Georgina Ballantine, who, after a two-hour battle, landed a record-breaking 64 lb salmon in Scotland’s river Tay in October 1922. Two of Ballantine’s fellow Brits, Doreen Davey and Clementina Morrison, went on to break their own fishing records, in 1923 (biggest spring salmon, 59.5 lb) and 1924 (the biggest fly-caught salmon, 61 lb), respectively.

Lest you think it’s just British women who smash salmon records, there’s Canada’s own Deborah Whitman-Perry, a novice angler who, in 2012, caught an absolutely massive 83.3 lb Chinook in beautiful British Columbia, not far from Escott’s fishing waters.

The legends continue today. Below, we explore the careers of four of today’s top women anglers.

Kathryn Maroun

Hailing from Halifax, Maroun is best known as the host and producer of the TV series What a Catch, but she’s also president of Casting for Recovery Canada, a fly fishing retreat for women who have or who have had breast cancer. She’s a certified Federation of Fly Fishers casting instructor, proponent of proper catch and release methods, and has landed game fish all over the world. These days, she’s also an activist for Lyme disease, which she has unfortunately suffered from since receiving a tick bite during a BC trip (always remember outdoor health and safety!).

How to Dress for Sport Fishing

When you come to Masset to go salmon fishing with Escott Sportfishing, you’ll be spending every day, all day, out on the water. While we provide rain gear, rain boots, a fishing hat, and a toque for each guest, you’ll need to pack the right clothes for your fishing trip.

For those who don’t already have their own “fishing wardrobe,” there are a few basic things to keep in mind.

Like your parents always told you, the key for dressing for the outdoors is layers. Although the temperatures in Haida Gwaii stay between 0°C and 20°C year round, the weather can be unpredictable. So, whether you’re fishing in the height of summer or as winter begins to creep up, layers will allow you to regulate your temperature.

Your fishing outfit should consist of three layers: a base layer, a midlayer, and your fishing bib.

The base layer is there to keep you dry. There’s no getting around sweat when you’re out fishing for the mighty Tyee, and a breathable base layer will eliminate excess moisture. If you’re fishing adventure is booked for a colder season, then this layer will also provide extra warmth. Ideally go for a synthetic and stay away from cotton or wool; although they are warm, they hold onto moisture, which just makes you colder.

The midlayer is there to keep you warm. The air trapped between the base layer and midlayer plays a major role in this, but so does the material. Stay away from jeans and other stiff materials and go for something less restrictive, like sweatpants or cargo pants. A T-shirt or fleece on top, depending on the season, is good for up top.

You’ll also want to keep your feet warm and, more importantly, dry. Wear sport-specific socks, not regular old tube socks—your toes will thank you. Another essential item is a pair of sunglasses. Polarized is best, to help cut the glare coming off the water, but above all make sure they stick on your face, otherwise they might end up overboard.

With the right clothes, you’ll make sure you can concentrate on reeling in the fish and not on being uncomfortable.

Your Choice of Scenic Route: Getting to Masset from the Mainland

One of the bonuses of booking a fishing adventure with Escott Sportsfishing is the opportunity to stay on Haida Gwaii, a stunning chain of more than 150 islands along the coast of British Columbia. Escott Lodge is built upon on the shores of Delkatla Inlet in Masset, BC, established on the largest island in the Haida Gwaii: Graham Island.

A global destination for ecotourists, outdoors adventurers, and wildlife enthusiasts, Masset, Graham Island, and the rest of Haida Gwaii are home to stunning landscapes and a rich variety of wildlife—including the mighty salmon.

There are three ways to get to the village of Masset from the mainland:

1. Airplane Visitors leaving from Vancouver can fly direct to Masset Airport (which has a 5,000-foot paved runway) by charter airplane or on one of Pacific Coastal Airlines regularly scheduled flights. The airport is located 3 km from the village centre, with taxis or rental cars available. Another option is to travel from Vancouver via Air Canada to Sandspit Airport, located on the more southerly island of Moresby. Masset is about a three-hour drive north, following a 20-minute ferry ride to jump islands.

2. Floatplane For guests arriving from central BC, daily seaplane flights are available from Prince Rupert to Masset with Inland Air Charters. The hour-long flight will not only get you some spectacular views, but will conveniently land you in Masset Harbour.

3. BC Ferries For those travelling by car or wanting to take the ultimate scenic route, BC Ferries docks in Skidegate, on the southernmost part of Graham Island. There are direct routes from Prince Rupert and connectors from Port Hardy (on Vancouver Island), with both overnight and daytime sailings available. During summer, early booking is advised, as these crossings are often filled to capacity. The drive from Skidegate to Escott’s Haida Gwaii lodge at Masset is just over 100 km.

Some Good Old-Fashioned Knowhow: Successful Fishing Techniques

You can be outfitted with the highest quality reels, the best fishing vessel, and the flashiest tackle around—but that doesn’t necessarily add up to a successful day of fishing. The surest thing to bring in a great haul of salmon? Some good old-fashioned knowhow.

Not only does catching that Tyee mean knowing when and where to look for it, but it also means knowing what fishing techniques to use for any given set of conditions. Will it be whole herring or cut-plug for bait? Or maybe a hoochie or a spoon lure is the surest bet to get a fish on the line. Then you need to ask yourself: Is it time for trolling (drawing the fishing line behind the moving boat) or is it time for mooching (slowly drifting through the water on the current)?

After nearly two decades of coastal fishing, Captain Danny Escott has an answer for all of the above—as does each one of the Escott guides, who each train extensively under Captain Escott.

At Escott, we offer two options to prepare your fish for the journey home. Our options include Fresh Fish and Canned Fish. The first, and more popular option, fresh fish, involves a lot of cleaning techniques that are purely based on your preference so your fish is cleaned and prepared the way you like it. We can clean the fish with the head on or off and can single or butterfly fillet it as desired. We remove stomach bones, vac-pack your fish, and even provide fish coolers. Your second option would be to have your fish canned. With canning, we can smoke it before it’s canned or vac pack it. We have three options for vac-packing, which include, hot-smoked, cold- smoked, or cut into steaks. Tons of options from which you can choose!

Fishing rods: Does size matter?

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room. Yes, size does matter. When speaking about fishing rods, the type and the size you use in saltwater fishing can help you ensure your catch of the day or make you go home with nothing at all.

Some people, especially fishing newbies, enter stores and purchase the first rod that catches their attention. However, this often proves to be a mistake.

In the past, fishing rods were just sticks that used to dangle a string. They ended in a hook that what people would use for alluring fish with the hope that one would eventually bite. Fortunately, things have changed with time. There are now specially designed rods for each fishing activity. Starting with innovative materials such as graphite, fiberglass and bamboo, modern day fishing rods help anglers to have a more accurate cast and a better control of fish fighting.

For beginners, the most common move is to buy a combo kit. They normally come with around 3 types of reels (i.e. spinning reels, spin cast reels or drag reels) and hooks that adapt to a single rod and use them in different fishing scenarios. But, even with a full kit, inexperience could prove costly. You might just return home empty handed and with broken fishing equipment.

Here are some useful tips to use when shopping rods for saltwater fishing.

Offshore/ Onshore/ Pier Fishing, big fish:

If you’re an adventurist and care for bigger, heavier fish, the best option for you is a Fast Action Rod. The ‘Action’ refers to the rod’s flexibility. In this case, Fast Action Rods are longer and only flexible at the tip of the shaft, while the rest remains rigid. This is great for fishing Salmon and other big fish because they are sturdy and can stand heavier weight and weathers. They work great in deep and shallow waters but they are not suitable to catch smaller fish because the cast is too long and the line too heavy.

Offshore/ Onshore/ Pier fishing, medium fish:

A Medium Action Rod is preferred by many anglers regardless of their experience because of its versatility. This type of rod is flexible along its upper half and is good for both offshore and onshore fishing. It is the best option for fishing in areas surrounded by trees. This rod allows both long and short casts (in a reasonable range). It’s good for medium sized fish while it’s not as accurate for big fish as a Fast action Rod. However, they are adaptable to deep and shallow waters.

Shore fishing/ Pier fishing/ Shallow waters, small fish:

When fishing for smaller kinds of fish, Slow Action Rods are the way to go. These are completely flexible, providing shorter, gentler casts. They are perfect for very small, small, and small-to-medium fish onshore. Because it offers almost no rigidness, this rod doesn’t stand strong winds but it’s a beginner’s best ally. It allows inexperienced fishers to cast like the pros after a little practice.

A good angler knows that there are many factors that can alter the degree of success of a fishing day; sometimes you can be completely prepared and still… no fish. Is there really a relation between fish and the weather? And if so, what are the best conditions to fish in?

Fish, as well as many other animals, have a great sense of the weather. Don’t expect them to know the amount of snow expected for the winter however… But there are scientific studies that show many animals have a very keen sense of the weather and therefore, react differently depending on the climate conditions. So, if you were wondering; yes, there are good and bad times to go fishing. How do fish react to different weathers?

Winter Weather:

Because fish are cold-blooded, when temperatures drop, their metabolisms tend to slow down a bit, so they don’t feed as much. That means that most fish may not be very active during this season.

Windy Weather:

The old proverb says: “When the wind is east the fish bite the least, when the wind is west the fish bite the best.” This is actually a true statement. When the winds blow from the west and south, it brings insects to the water, making smaller fish swim closer to banks where larger fish tend to eat, and making them get closer to the surface. It’s all a big cycle. So keep on the watch for the winds.

Rainy Weather:

Like humans, certain fish have preferences for rain; while some fish will go deeper into the water to escape from rain, other insect-eating fish will be nearer to the surface waiting for bugs to fall into the water. It all comes down to what you want to fish.

Warm Weather:

Contrary to popular beliefs, summer weather isn’t always the best to fish in. Some fish dislike the heat and go deeper in the water looking for cooler areas. Because of the low pressure that comes with warm weather, it is great to fish early in the morning or late in the afternoon during summer seasons.

Fishing is exciting, especially if you get good bites. Any weather can be a good one to fish in if you take the right measures. Why we catch & release Tyees

Chinook salmon, AKA Tyee, King or chub, are one of the biggest fish around the island. They are certainly a special kind of fish. Their flesh varies in color from white to pink and even deep red. They change colour as they get closer to their spawning zones, becoming darker and red around the fins. They are quite big for a salmon, and they are also known to be piscivorous, meaning that they can be seen eating other fish. Just imagine the size of these monsters. The sport caught world record stands at 44.11kg kilograms (97 pounds!). That’s what we call monster fish.

We know; we know… some people don’t find it as fun to catch a fish and see it go back to the wild; but Tyees are not very popular as meals. But fishers love going after these beauties of nature, both because they offer a good fight, and because there is a record to break! Once again we post about the amazing experience your stay in the Queen Charlotte Islands would be; we strive to keep being your number one fishing and outdoor adventuring site. Now that you know almost everything there is about the island itself and the activities to do, get to know what Escott Sportfishing requires from you to make your fishing dreams come true, and also get familiar with a few other pleasant surprises in our packages.

Well, this won’t surprise you: you need a license to fish. We do not provide you one and require you to have it at hand to enjoy the excitement of fishing in Haida Gwaii.

You need a B.C. Tidal Waters Sports Fishing License which allows you to fish on Salt Water and are provided by the government of Canada. This one is different from the Non-tidal Angling License, which would only allow you to fish in fresh water and is issued by the British Columbia province.

The cost varies, depending on how many days you will be fishing, and it can go up if you´re not a Canadian resident, so make sure you visit their webpage for updates. The juvenile license for kids under 16 years of age is always free.

You also need to get your Salmon Conservation Stamp affixed to your license if you want to catch any kind of Salmon with us. This stamp is valid for a year, starting April 1st of each fishing season. Make sure you get your license and salmon conservation stamp at the same time so they print it directly on your license.

The Escott Sportfishing team provides transportation to and from the Masset airport, so you can scratch that off your to-do list. But you must remember there is a luggage weight limit of 25 pounds per person with the fishing gear included.

Climate here changes without warning, so we highly recommend our guests to be prepared for everything; bring enough warm clothing, because it is mostly cold in the islands. We will supply the essentials for your fishing trips such as rain boots and rain gear. 11 hours of fishing per day plus 7 hours on arrival day next to the experts will surely satisfy your fishing needs. Our accommodations on their own are an experience you won’t want to miss out on; we are able to fit a total of 15 guests at the time and the lodge is perfectly arranged to harmonize with the incredible surroundings.

Salmon Fishing with the Pros at Escott Sportfishing

The sun breaking the horizon announces a new day, and the ocean is yours to conquer. What better way to start it off other than fishing for beautiful Coho? Escott Sportfishing offers the opportunity to be part of a once in a lifetime experience.

Coho, also known as Silver Salmon or Silvers, are part of the salmon family and are very distinctive due to their color, strength and aggressiveness. Today, there are many ways to catch Silver Salmons and the Escott Sportfishing team has tried the most used methods throughout time, adapting to the surroundings to ensure the catch and a wonderful experience. That´s how we have narrowed down the methods to those we have found most effective, and today we want to dedicate some time to show them to you.

Fly Fishing

This angling method is different from normal fishing; it requires a fly rod, reel and a lightweight line that is specially designed for it. You can try casting your fly, or drifting it. Cohos are a bit temperamental. Hand tied flies resemble natural invertebrates, and lure the fish in like moths to the flame. Although it can seem complicated at first, with a day or two of practice; you’ll be a pro... or almost.

Buck Tailing

This technique is proven effective for both salmons and also large trout in lakes. All you have to do is troll your fly behind a moving boat, making sure it barely breaks the surface. The key here is the boat; it must never remain at the same speed, but it should also keep a speed that the Coho can catch up to. Luckily for you, Escott Sportfishing has experts for the job.

Trolling

Similar to the Buck Tailing, trolling, this can be done from a boat in movement, casting the lines with bait or lures to get fish more easily. The difference here is that you can also do it from a static position by drawing the lines in a specific speed in order to make fish bite. Outriggers and Downriggers are often used to keep the lines from tangling and also regulate the depth of the lures. You’ll have a blast either way when your Coho strikes your fly.

Halibuts are a type of flatfish often to be seen on US and Canadian waters, although there have been sightings of such on Japanese waters as well; they are a family of the right-eyed flounder fish. They owe their name to the great popularity they have on catholic festivities; they are mostly regarded as food fish and have an incredibly low-fat meat. They range up to 500 lb (230kg), and can grow to the astounding measurement of 8 ft (2.4m).
