September Surf Boot Camp Success

Saturday welcomed our campers with small, perfect, clean waves. After some introductions and a quick surf assessment the plan was set in motion and it was off to the beach!

All our campers had some previous surfing experience, be it a couple of lessons in Canada to a week’s surf trip in Morocco, we all had a surf story to tell and some areas to work on.

With hazy September sunshine, the first session of the weekend was perfect for blowing away the cobwebs. As the 2ft Fistral rollers came in our campers managed to pick off a few waves each. Abby Kelly from Surrey wins the award for most excitable surfer!

Surf Analysis

After the lunch break it was time for a quick review of the morning’s session. Through analysing the session photos, coach Jorrin could pin point areas to improve in the next session. After lunch the crew headed to Watergate Bay just 4 miles north of our base here in Newquay. With the incoming high tide, the conditions favoured the more exposed beach of Watergate Bay with the thought that this larger beach would attract more swell. Our campers found the conditions tricky but still managed to catch a few rides before heading back to base camp.

Wine and Dine

It’s custom on a surf boot camp weekend to share a meal on the Saturday night and not much beats a BBQ by the sea in Cornwall. It gave the crew a chance to share some stories and adventures whilst sipping done some fine wine and devouring double helpings of pudding!

Improvements All Round

The Sunday morning shone bright with some more September sunshine and provided the group with similar surf conditions to that of the Saturday morning. Making the most of the low tide and empty beach, the gang headed down to Fistral’s little brother to kick on with the progression already made so far. Everyone was catching unbroken green waves, the holy grail in developing your surf skills!

Coasteering!

As the session came to a close the waves began to diminish and it was decided to better use the afternoon by joining in on one of the Coasteer sessions at the activity centre. The crew conquered the brand new route Adventure Gully to round off a jam packed weekend in style!

The weekend was brought to a close with a look back at some of the photos, some goodie bags and hopes of enjoying another surf boot camp weekend sometime soon.

Children’s Surf Lesson Gets ‘Excellent’ Results

In early April young Lucas Poole spent 4 days learning to surf with us at the Rip Curl ESF Surf School. Lead instructor for his lessons was Joe Woodhouse who had Lucas up and riding in no time. Joe commented, “We had great weather and waves and even though it was early April, young Lucas was totally comfortable in our toasty warm Rip Curl wetsuits, boots and there was no need for gloves as the sun was shining”. Joe continues “It was great to see Lucas improve so quickly through our system of progressive lessons and by day four he was catching unbroken waves and turning the board with speed and finesse, he should definitely stick to it in the future!”

Lucas’ mum kindly wrote a great review for us on Trip Adivsor, she had this to say:

Newquay Activity Centre Becomes An Official Sponsor Of Royal Navy Royal Marines Surf Association

Newquay Activity Centre and the Royal Navy Royal Marines Surf Association have formed a sponsorship agreement which sees the members of the club receive specialist coaching to help them fast track their improvements.

Last weekend the Royal Navy Royal Marines Surf Association arrived at the Newquay Activity Centre to undergo a day of coaching with classroom work, beach based tuition and video analysis. The coaching team included world number two longboarder Ben Skinner, past British team coach and Newquay Activity Centre director Rob Barber and the centre’s head coach Jorrin Massingham.

Surf Association committee member Simon Schnetler comments ‘Our sponsorship agreement has been a positive step towards improving the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Surf Association’s performance within the Inter-Service championships and ultimately other open competitions. Traditionally the club has focused on introducing members of the Armed Forces to the sport and developing them organically, albeit the level of tuition was inevitably limited. By recognising the need for us to outsource our training, and investing in our more experienced members, it is envisaged that we can dramatically raise our profile. The enthusiasm and expertise that Newquay Activity Centre has offered to the Surf Association is the catalyst we require to achieve greater success’

With two to three foot clean waves in Newquay bay the group concentrated on heat drills, tactics and how to effectively perform to the competition criteria.

Newquay Activity Centre’s head coach Jorrin Massingham picks out the best spots to surf before heading out.

The coaching culminated in a closely fought competition which saw Chief Petty Officer John Nash from the 824 Naval Air Squadron surf to victory with some excellent wave selection and committed turns. The aim was not only to improve the skills of the personnel with competitive aspirations but also those that want to get the most out of the sport for recreation.

John Nash commented “It is fantastic that we have received sponsorship from the Newquay Activity Centre. It means we can now get high quality surf tuition and progress in the sport with the expert guidance on offer. Our session today was brilliant, with a professional surfer like Ben Skinner offering his advice and knowledge on surfing it was a huge help. The video analysis was incredibly beneficial too, where Ben and the team could look closely at our techniques and spot mistakes we would have never considered or noticed before.”

Newquay Activity Centre instructors welcome the top surfers from Royal Navy Royal Marine Surf Association. The club will soon be holding the Royal Navy Royal Marine championships, the results of which will be used to choose the team to compete in the Tri-Services Surfing Championships.

Warrant Officer Ross Mcgregor based at HM Naval Base Clyde also commented: “It was a great session with Ben Skinner and the team at the Newquay Activity Centre. Normally when I surf I tend to stay away from the crowds and find quiet spots so this was quite different. However with Ben coaching I found myself pushing my limits and trying things I have not tried before.”

Newquay Activity Centre Director Rob Barber commented: “We have been providing expert surfing instruction for over 15 years so it was a natural progression for us to fully support the Royal Navy Royal Marines Surf Association and continue our commitment with our military sponsorship partnerships. We look forward to helping them develop their club in any way that we can and hopefully we will see some more trophies in their cabinet in the coming months and years. We offer 40% discount to all Military groups across all of our activities’

The Royal Navy Royal Marines Surf Association has had a long-standing relationship with NewquayActivity Centre as each year many groups visit the facility to participate in Adventurous Training. Activities on offer by the centre include coasteering, bodyboarding, surfing kayaking and mountain biking.

Newquay Activity Centre Pre-Season In-House Staff Training - Standards Raised Again!

May 2013. Once again the Newquay Activity Centre staff have been hard at work learning and improving new and existing skills which will be put to use in the busy forthcoming summer season.

Karl leads the class with the first presentation.
Karl Fice Thomson led the staff old and new through a rigorous day of training to improve the practice of all aspects of the Centre's varied activities.
Newquay Activity Centre strive to be the best at providing the highest quality of service for anyone wishing to partake in any of our numerous waterbased activities.
We have a 100% commitment towards safety and awareness in the environments we work in, ensuring everyone who comes to our centre has the time of their lives and do so in the safest way possible. This is all thanks to our professional instructors and guides that all undergo our continuous staff training and also hold a wealth of personal experience.
Newquay Activity Centre work closely with local emergency service organisations including the RNLI and Westcountry ambulance services to ensure best practice.

The staff used practical display and debate to agree the best approach to many potentially hazardous situations.
This training session consisted or the following elements.

Instructor codes of conduct
expectations of an Instructor
Risk assessments
Emergency action plans
Normal operations procedures
Equipment Itineary/checks and correct storage of
Inccident/accident Practical role play senarios
Basic coasteer training (land and water based)

Newquay Activity Centre, new years eve - Coasteer Charity Challenge!

Leap into the new year and join us as we raise money to enable Jaide Lowe to compete with the British Surfing Team in the world surfing games in Nicaragua in 2013.

Newquay Activity Centre's expert coasteer leaders will lead the fundraising coasteer group towards Newquay's Gazzle near Fistral beach to leap into the cool Cornish seas.

All coasteer participants will need to pay £10 to enter and all proceeds will go directly towards helping young Newquay surfer Jaide Lowe fulfil her surfing dreams and represent her country. We welcome cheerleaders and spectators to support the BRAVE and FEARLESS coasteering crusaders as they take a new years eve dip!

7.30am start (to catch the high tide) at Newquay Activity Centre. Call 01637 879571 to book your place. It is essential to book and pay before December 31st!

The Leap in to the new year will be completed by 9am when we will head back to The Carnmarth Hotel for a free cuppa tea and a charity raffle! The mission will be a short coasteer route with a series of plunges from varying heights in to the chilly Atlantic. Participants can choose the height of the leap (under our safety guidelines) it's the participation that counts! If you don't want to take part, please support the event and donate on the day, or sponsor a friend.

Alice learns to Boogie

This week Alice wanted to learn and improve how to bodyboard. After a series of lessons all week she's now loving the sport and can't wait to get back into the water!

We've had a cracking Easter weekend! Great weather,waves and tones of activities going on!
Gaz our bodyboard coach was lucky enough to land his first hen group of the season! By the sound of it the girls loved it. Here is what they had to say about their bodyboarding experience:

It's February, but that still hasn't stopped our surf lessons!

This week we have had 3 girls who travelled all the way down from Wales to give surfing ago for the very first time and I'm pretty sure it won't be there last!

Here's what they had to say about it:
