I know that no one is thinking about July this morning, but the ESIP Visioneers are meeting today at 2 PM EST. The goal of the Visioneers is to make the ESIP meetings the best, most productive, most memorable meetings on the planet. News from Federation collaboration areas from the last week:

* Geospatial Cluster had their first call last week with a presentation from James Gallagher on the release of OPeNDaP's Hyrax 1.8 server.

* Semantic Web has a proposed ToolMatch collaboration to match data collections with tools at: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/ToolMatch. Feel free to add to or question what is there.

* The Partnership Committee met with the new members last week giving an abbreviated ESIP 101.

Very successful meeting last week! Thanks to all who participated. We have 7 new member organizations, a newly elected ESIP leadership and the ESIP assembly adopted guidelines for Data Citation and Data Sharing Principles. They also created a new Data Stewardship committee, now chaired by Curt Tilmes.

I hope for those of you that celebrate Thanksgiving, you had a nice holiday weekend. As things quieted down last week, it gave me a chance to reflect on how thankful I am for the vibrant participation in the ESIP Federation. We couldn't do this without all of you :)

Call for Nominations for the 2011 NOAA David Johnson Award

The NOAA David Johnson Award is presented by the National Space Club at the annual Dr. Robert J. Goddard memorial Dinner. The award was established in 1999 to honor the first Administrator of what was to become the NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. The award recognizes young professionals who have developed an innovative application of Earth observation satellite data (alone or in combination with non-satellite data) that is, or could be, used for operational purposes to assess and/or predict atmospheric, oceanic, or terrestrial conditions. The satellite data used may be from any Earth observation satellite, e.g., U.S. government, commercial, or foreign satellites.

Monday Update: Winter Meeting 2012 | New ESIP Awards | Around the Federation

The ESIP 2012 Winter Meeting planning is almost finished. The draft agenda is available on the wiki now. Thanks to all of the groups that worked with us to get the program together earlier. There are still a few spaces for breakout sessions, if you have last minute ideas. Meeting registration will go live tomorrow morning, however you can book your hotel rooms now.

In preparation for the Winter Meeting Business Meeting, ESIP Voting Reps, heads up on a vote that will be sent out in the next day or so on minor changes being proposed to the ESIP constitution and bylaws.

New ESIP Awards:

As part of Federation goals to better recognizing the tremendous effort our members put forth to forward the overall work this community does, the Partnership Committee has created two new awards:

President's Award - This award is proposed to honor an individual who has made the most significant contribution to the Federation in the previous year. This award will be given annually at the ESIP Winter Meeting. The awardee receives a plaque.
ESIP of the Year - This award is to honor an ESIP partner organization that best exemplifies the Spirit of ESIP in one or more areas. This award will be given annually at the Winter Meeting. The member organization will receive a plaque.

We will be awarding these along with the Martha Maiden Award at the Winter Meeting. Nominations are due Dec. 1.

EarthCube

EarthCube. In the time I have been associated with the ESIP Federation, no new initiative has generated as much buzz across the community as NSF’s EarthCube initiative. EarthCube is an exciting concept that is contrary to the way NSF has ever done science before. The vision put forward by NSF for EarthCube aligns with the way ESIP members work through community-driven governance, distributed, service-oriented architecture and the balance between autonomous member organizations and collaboration. But instead of feeling at peace with EarthCube ideas, it is my sense that the ESIP community is a little on edge.

Meet the Student Fellows! Yasmin Zaerpoor (Columbia)

In the Spring of 2011, ESIP welcomed it's first class of Student Fellows. The Fellows support ESIP collaboration areas that align with their graduate school research interest as one way to gain 'real-world' experience. This series of posts will introduce you to the Fellows that you may meet on some of your telecons or at ESIP meetings. The next fellow in this series is Yasmin Zaerpoor.
