Eight New Members (Four Domestic, Four International)

Elected to Federation of Earth Science Information Partners

January 8, 2013 —The Assembly of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP Federation) elected eight new partner organizations, bringing total membership to nearly 150 organizations. (See below for a complete list of new members). ESIP Federation partners work globally connecting various domain, sector and agency communities to exchange knowledge about emerging Earth science data, technical and science topics with an aim toward improving interoperability across broad distributed provider networks.

“This new class of members reflects the growing interest from home and abroad in the ESIP Federation,” said Karl Benedict, ESIP Federation President. “The ESIP Federation’s community approach is gaining recognition for its effectiveness in tackling common technical problems facing data systems providers. The ESIP Federation’s collaborative and consensus-driven model has made it the organization of choice for many seeking to advance their own work as well as that of the global Earth science data and technology community.”

The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) is a broad-based, distributed community of science data and information technology practitioners that leverage collaboration and coordinate interoperability efforts across the Earth science community. Partners utilize these independent forums for knowledge exchange and collaboration – an intellectual commons – where practitioners solve common challenges. Partnership in the ESIP Federation is open to organizations that work at the intersection of Earth science data and associated technologies.

ESIP Federation membership is strictly voluntary and its continued growth reflects the recognition that the ESIP Federation is a dynamic and collaborative forum where data providers, researchers and users gather to exchange valuable information. According to Benedict, “The continued growth and diversity of ESIP Federation partners exemplifies the continued relevance of the community approach. Practitioners from across the globe value the expertise of their peers in the ESIP Federation and both gain and contribute knowledge to this dynamic network.”

The ESIP Federation is a consortium of Earth science data and technology professionals spanning government (NASA, NOAA, EPA, USGS, NSF), academia and the private sectors (both commercial and nonprofit). The organization is dedicated to transforming research data and information into useful and usable data and information products for decision makers, policy makers and the public. Initiated by NASA in 1997, the ESIP Federation provides data, products and services to decision makers and researchers in public and private settings. The Foundation for Earth Science provides administrative and staff support to the ESIP Federation.

ESIP Commons Ignite Talk at #CreativeCommons10 Triangle Party

On Dec. 12, Erin Robinson presented at the Triangle Creative Commons 10-Year Celebration. It was a great opportunity to understand how the CC license, built into the ESIP Commons, really liberates the knowledge generated by the ESIP community. Hopefully, everyone made the "spring forward" this weekend. A few notes to get the week started:

Looking for 2012 ESIP Student Fellows! News from Federation collaboration areas from the last week:

* Geospatial Cluster had their first call last week with a presentation from James Gallagher on the release of OPeNDaP's Hyrax 1.8 server.

* Semantic Web has a proposed ToolMatch collaboration to match data collections with tools at: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/ToolMatch. Feel free to add to or question what is there.

* The Partnership Committee met with the new members last week giving an abbreviated ESIP 101.

From CIESIN: Announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the 2012 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) produced by CIESIN and Yale University’s Center for Environmental Law and Policy (YCELP), in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and the Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, identifies Switzerland as first in addressing pollution control and natural resource management challenges. Iraq is ranked last. The EPI has been produced every two years since 2006. The 2012 EPI ranks 132 countries, using 22 indicators in ten major policy categories including air and water pollution, climate change, boidiversity, and forest management. Data sets making up the EPI were contributed from the International Energy Agency, remote sensing research groups at Battelle and University of Maryland, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and other entities. We have 7 new member organizations, a newly elected ESIP leadership and the ESIP assembly adopted guidelines for Data Citation and Data Sharing Principles. They also created a new Data Stewardship committee, now chaired by Curt Tilmes.

AGU Medal Nomination opens Jan. 16 - The 2012 Union medals, awards, prize nominations begin on January 16, 2012 and the deadline for submission is set for March 16, 2012. See website for details. Note: ESIP co-sponsors the Charles S. Falkenberg Award to recognize a scientist under 45 years of age who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.

Monday Update: AGU | Winter Meeting | Award Nominations

I hope for those of you that celebrate Thanksgiving, you had a nice holiday weekend. As things quieted down last week, it gave me a chance to reflect on how thankful I am for the vibrant participation in the ESIP Federation. We couldn't do this without all of you :)

AGU is in less than two weeks. Last call to plug your event or session on the ESIP flyer. Send me 1-2 sentences. If you've already sent from a previous email, I've got those.

ESIP Winter Meeting - December 2 is the last day for early bird registration. The price for all types goes up $100 after that. We have a hotel room block from Jan. 3-6, 2012. The last day to get the ESIP rate is December 13.

As a way to quantify the outcomes of the ESIP meetings, we worked with the Visioneers and many of the breakout session leads to develop goals for the meeting. If you have input please add/edit the goals on the wiki.

New ESIP Awards: The Partnership Committee created two new ESIP awards to recognize outstanding contributions from our community - the President's Award and the ESIP of the Year. ESIP Award Nominations: As you know the Partnership Committee created two new ESIP awards to recognize outstanding contributions from our community - the President's Award and the ESIP of the Year. Anyone can nominate and we are accepting nominations through Dec. 1 using this form. If you have any questions feel free to email Carol or me.

2012 ESIP Winter Meeting: The ESIP Winter Meeting is Jan. 4-6, 2012 at the Renaissance Hotel, DuPont Circle. The meeting agenda is almost full. We have plenary talks confirmed by Tim Killeen, Assistant Director, Directorate for Geoscience, National Science Foundation and Adrian Gardner, CIO, NASA Goddard. There will also be a panel on cross-agency collaboration that is not quite finalized and time for an EarthCube debrief.

Meeting registration is open now with the early bird rate. Rates will go up Dec. 2. There is a small block of rooms reserved at the Renaissance available by requesting the ESIP Meeting rate. Rooms can be booked by phone or online.

AGU 2011: As always lots going on this week. There will be a flyer of ESIP member sessions along with these events below on the ESSI table in the poster hall. As a heads up, here are a few to mark your calendar for:

Call for Nominations for the 2011 NOAA David Johnson Award

The NOAA David Johnson Award is presented by the National Space Club at the annual Dr. Robert J. Goddard memorial Dinner. The award was established in 1999 to honor the first Administrator of what was to become the NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. The award recognizes young professionals who have developed an innovative application of Earth observation satellite data (alone or in combination with non-satellite data) that is, or could be, used for operational purposes to assess and/or predict atmospheric, oceanic, or terrestrial conditions. The satellite data used may be from any Earth observation satellite, e.g., U.S. government, commercial, or foreign satellites.

Monday Update: Winter Meeting 2012 | New ESIP Awards | Around the Federation

The ESIP 2012 Winter Meeting planning is almost finished. The draft agenda is available on the wiki now. Thanks to all of the groups that worked with us to get the program together earlier. There are still a few spaces for breakout sessions, if you have last minute ideas. Meeting registration will go live tomorrow morning, however you can book your hotel rooms now.

In preparation for the Winter Meeting Business Meeting, ESIP Voting Reps, heads up on a vote that will be sent out in the next day or so on minor changes being proposed to the ESIP constitution and bylaws.

New ESIP Awards:

As part of Federation goals to better recognizing the tremendous effort our members put forth to forward the overall work this community does, the Partnership Committee has created two new awards:

President's Award - This award is proposed to honor an individual who has made the most significant contribution to the Federation in the previous year. This award will be given annually at the ESIP Winter Meeting. The awardee receives a plaque.
ESIP of the Year - This award is to honor an ESIP partner organization that best exemplifies the Spirit of ESIP in one or more areas. This award will be given annually at the Winter Meeting. The member organization will receive a plaque.

We will be awarding these along with the Martha Maiden Award at the Winter Meeting. Nominations are due Dec. 1.
