A self-study program can be part of an overall program or the entire method of study. A self-study program can be by yourself - with a partner or even a small group.

Self-study is very successful with subjects or skills that require lots of practice or lots of repetions or repetitions with small variations.

Music, sports and languages can all be learned and practiced using periods of self-study to practice and perfect the knowledge the skills and the variations.

Why Start a Self-Study Program

Most schools charge from $800 to $1200 a month for a typical 100 hour ESL English language class program. Students learn new information for about 20 minutes and then practice or repeat information for the remaining period.

Students can join a supervised ESL English language self-study program with an excellent qualified and experienced self-study coach for about $200. for a month program.

Most schools use standard general information books and students are usually completely bored by the content.

An excellent qualified and experienced self-study coach can suggest how interesting topics and content can be used to study the English language. Students are not bored.

An excellent qualified and experienced self-study coach can suggest free classes and language exchanges, free work placements for practice and free study resources available in the community.

Link to the Supervised Self-Study ESL English Language Programs page in the ESL in Canada Directory

As teachers we charge for the training that we provide.

As agents - there is no charge for the clients - we receive a referral fee as part of a regular marketing expense.

********

There are many schools and training organizations that do not pay referral fees to external agents. There are a few programs that are excellent for clients to study in as part of their education program. Because it takes time, effort and money to find out about these programs - we have to charge students a consulting fee.

As consultants we have to keep our clients best interests as the number one priority. We do not discriminate between schools that pay fees and schools that do not. This growth has accele-rated since the late 1990s, mirroring the globalization of economies and societies.

Data on international and foreign students are based on the UOE data collection on education statistics, administered annually by the OECD. Data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics are also included. Students are classified as "international" if they left their country of origin and moved to another country to study. Students are classified as "foreign" if they are not citizens of the country in which they are studying.

In 2008, over 3.3 million students were enrolled outside their country of citizenship, representing an increase of nearly 11% on the previous year. Just over 79% of students worldwide who study abroad do so in OECD countries. Asians account for almost 49% of all students studying abroad in the OECD area.

OECD countries attract the bulk of students who study abroad worldwide - just slightly under four out of five. A number of those students (31%) are themselves from other OECD countries: Of the total number of students studying abroad in the OECD area, 2.4% come from France 3.4% from Germany 2.1% from Japan, 4.6% from Korea and 1.8% each from Canada and the United States.

The biggest single source country is China, which accounts for 17.1% of all students -studying abroad in the OECD area (or 18.5% if Hong Kong, China is included).

Asia is the biggest source area at just under 49% of the total in OECD countries. Their presence is particularly strong in Australia, Japan and Korea, where they account for more than 75% of international and foreign students.

In the OECD area, the Asian group is followed by the Europeans, accounting for 24.5% of international and foreign students, followed by Africa with 10.1%, South -America with 5.3% and North America with 3.7%.

There are big variations between countries in the percentage of international students enrolled in their tertiary student body. In Australia, international students represent 20.6% of tertiary students; 15.5% in Austria; 12.9% in New Zealand; 14.1% in Switzerland; and 14.7% in the United Kingdom.

Why study abroad?

A recent BC survey found that when choosing a country, just over half of the students put quality of education in their top three priorities. Just over a quarter (26.3 per cent) see the reputation of a country’s universities as a key factor.

59 percent of the prospective British students said they considered quality of education the top priority – the highest rating of any destination country on that criterion.

Prospective USA students were most likely to focus on enhancing their career prospects (38 percent).

Prospective Australia or Canada students were more inclined than others to see the opportunity to work while studying as a key consideration (24 percent), while those seeking a place in Germany were most likely to mention low tuition fees as a priority (25 percent).

For additional details
http://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/sites/eag_highlights-2010-en/01/11/index.html?contentType=/ns/StatisticalPublication,/ns/Chapter&itemId=/content/chapter/eag_highlights-2010-13-en&containerItemId=/content/serial/2076264x&accessItemIds=&mimeType=text/html

******
Blog URL: http://eslincanada.blogspot.com/

Because few teachers have had specific coursework or training in workplace ESP, this seminar will focus on the needs of both in-service and future ESP trainers.

Using short case studies, participants will learn how they can prepare themselves to deliver appropriate courses that reflect the needs of all stakeholders.

This method will let us spend much of the seminar focusing on finding and using learning and training resources for ESP trainers. We will also carefully explore how ESP trainers can determine what they need to do, find or design appropriate materials, and assess the effectiveness of their work.

To conclude, we will discuss not only the linguistic issues of workplace ESP but also the cultural and psychological challenges both trainers and trainees can face.

Learning Outcomes

Increase your familiarity with best practices in ESP
Know your limits and build your abilities
Learn to find resources to make you a more effective ESP trainer
Conduct a simple needs analysis
Assess the effectiveness of your work
Deal with cross-cultural issues in training
Tackle the issue of which English or Englishes
See your role as an expert user of English rather than as a nonnative teacher

Target Audience

Traditional English language teachers who wish to become ESP workplace trainers
Teachers who are already doing workplace training but are interested in increasing their knowledge of the field

Teacher trainers who wish to include workplace teaching in their classes or curriculum

Owners of language schools who wish to expand into the ESP market

Presenter

Charles Hall, Ph.D., Dr.h.c., is Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Memphis. He has led training workshops sponsored by various organizations, such as the U.S. Department of State and the United Nations, in almost 30 countries, recently including Iraq, Sudan, and Timor Leste. His major areas of interest are teaching methodology, ESP for law, and online curriculum development. Hall has held two Senior Fulbright academic year awards.

If you have any questions, please contact edprograms@tesol.org

******
Blog URL: http://eslincanada.blogspot.com/

Learners and trainers as well as materials developers all have to deal with these changes, too.

How do they do this? And are they successful at adapting to the opportunities and constraints offered by new technologies ranging from blogs to communities and networks, to CLIL and task-based learning and even phonics teaching.

Are we adapting to the changing child?

In this PCE we will have a broad and closer look at examples from these perspectives. By the end of the day you will leave with a clearer idea as to how well we doing as a YLT community.

Once again YLT SIG is bringing you a day that cannot be missed!

The day will be filled with talks and workshops from the following experts. By the end of the day, you will be clearer about how the YLT community is addressing these issues.

Confirmed Speakers

Brian Tomlinson - freelance materials writer
Jamie Keddie - freelance teacher & teacher trainer
Ken Wilson - Drama trainer & author of ELT materials
Nik Peachey - specialist in web based technologies for language learning
Paul Braddock - senior teacher at the British Council YL Centre, Barcelona
Richard Johnstone Prof Emeritus - researcher into ELL
Rama Mathew - Professor of Education in Delhi University

YLT SIG Pre-Conference Event 7th April 2010

Additional information at www.iatefl.org

*****
Blog URL: http://eslincanada.blogspot.com/

E-mail has taken the place of traditional mail and telegrams. Web sites take the place of corporate brochures and product catalogues, electronic forms are starting to make traditional paper forms obsolete. Traditional printed reports lose their primary in corporate communication;PowerPoint presentations, wikis, and blogs take their place. Formal one-way communication structures are replaced by more informal network structures.

Self-Service
These changes have increased the possibilities for the general public to get engaged in activities that traditionally belonged to the responsibility of specialists. The Internet enables us to become our own travel agents, bankers, or even our own physicians. wikipedia is a striking example of the way members of the public co-create a source of information that matches or surpasses the well-respected Encyclopedia Britannica and its counterparts in other countries. Our society is changing from service to self-service.

Consequences
The move to self-service has important consequences for technical and professional communication. To mention only a few: Web 2.0 features enable the public to contribute to or amend (technical) documentation. User forums, weblogs (blogs), and wikis have become important sources of information about almost every conceivable topic. The roles of information creator and information user are becoming interchangeable. Administrative organizations such as banks, insurance companies, and government agencies increasingly use the Internet as the channel for transactions with their public. Health organizations are using the Internet for communication purposes, from health advice and consultation to remote monitoring of patients.

New Questions
This raises important questions for technical and professional communicators. what are the social and economic implications of the self-service world? Who will profit, and who runs the risk of being excluded? What are the consequences of the "digital divide" if everyone is expected to "help themselves?" How can technical communication and usability specialists support the development of self-service environments that make sense and empower the public to put them to good use? How can we teach our students to effectively create and use information in self-service environments?

We hope to explore these questions and other issues at IPCC 2010.

IPCC 2010 Conference Threads

Self-Service

•How to help users conduct transactions, find their way in complex information systems.
•The effectiveness of wizards, cue cards, instructions, etc.
•Effect on self-confidence, perceived ease of use, acceptance of systems (which factors are good predictors of acceptance and usability).
•Ethical aspects of self-service.

Access and Accessibility

•Create information and services for people with limited prior knowledge, language skills, and digital skills.
•Giving people with disabilities of any kind access to information and services.
•Technical communication and the Digital Divide.
•Mobile or ubiquitous access to information.

Web 2.0 for Technical Communicators

•Wikis, blogs, forums: How can technical and professional communicators put them to good use?
•Chat, text messaging, Twitter, and their applications in professional and organizational communication.
•Facebook, LinkedIn, and their impact on the engineering and technical communication community.
•New roles for tech support.
•User-generated content (instructions, support, etc.).
•Web 2.0 in the engineering context.

Visualization of Location, Space, and Direction

•Uses, usability, and accessibility of geo-spatial information in applications like Google Maps and Streetview.
•Usability of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for lay audiences.
•Innovative applicaitons of geospatial information in technical communication.
•Design considerations for navigation and other GPS systems.
•Location-aware information systems.

Engineering Communication, Communicating Engineering

•Typical genres for engineering communication.
•Development of new genres.
•Education and life-long learning.
•Service learning.
•Communication courses.
•Visualization skills.
•Communicating numbers or statistics.
•Proposal writing.
•Oral presentations for and by engineers.
•Video instructions.

Go to IPCC for additional info:
http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/pcs/index.php?q=node/843

*********
Blog URL: http://eslincanada.blogspot.com/
