ESL Issues for School Owners... :: Two Spanish scams

Scam number one- some scum in Malaga are advertising for English teachers at a reputable and existing school in Murcia.
Very plausible, sending contracts from a 'barrister' called David Adams.
THEN they ask for money for a visa and up front accommodation expenses. The legitimate schools are aware of the scam, but it seems that it is all aimed at non EU citizens!!!!

There is a school at Puerto Santa Maria, just outside Cadiz, advertising for 'Language Assistants'. Now my experience is from when they were advertising for teachers and I can advise that if you want to take a couple of days off work and lose pay and fork out for the journey to London, for an 'interview' then please apply. It all keeps the Director of English studies amused while she is on her jollies in England.

Definitely that would be an awesome idea.
Even though I was already checking out some executive job in the UK I still didn't make any decision yet.
I would be interested!

So I'm sure there would be many others as well

Yes I was laundered in Omnoi, an outskirts city of Bangkok. After a month of difficult working conditions, I received an email from Oe Oe on the day of my first due month payment. She billed me for a year escrow and billed me for real and false apartment costs that had nothing to do with my employer. That reduced my due salary to one tenth. She then refused to pay even that until I sent back email teacher forms half of which I had been unable to access. Needless to say I received not one baht from that employer. Watch those criminals. Their names are Oe Oe, Mr Harry, Khun Rod and Nana. They are most despicable because they prey on foreign teachers who because of thai school rules are forced to work technically illegally.

THIS POST HAS BEEN MODERATED

THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE WHO IS CONSIDERING TAKING UP AN ESL OR EFL TEACHING POSITION AT THE (School Name Removed) IN BAOJI CITY, SHAANXI PROVINCE, CHINA

First, I will explain why I have put the name of the school in italics. There is no such school called the (School Name Removed) Training Center anywhere in Baoji, or probably in all of China for that matter. One of the ways in which our employer (I came to China with my girlfriend who is also employed by the school) duped us into coming to the school was by refusing to mention that the school was actually a public kindergarten, which for all of you foreign teachers in the know, can be a far cry from a respectable, professional, private English school.
The working conditions at the school are horrible and the complete antithesis of a productive learning environment. Each class has, on average, 40-50 students, and the sole method of keeping that many students interested and behaved for as long as possible is by physical and verbal abuse, which the Chinese teachers working at the school are happy to do, but under no circumstances, would any foreign teacher ever consider. For this reason, teaching the children English is almost impossible
Although the employers of the school followed the agreed-upon contract throughout the year of employment, they were extremely difficult and frustrating to deal with for many reasons. Their unprofessional methods of communicating, scheduling and all of the other day-to-day tasks that one would expect to be carried out properly by any functional employer were unbearable. Specifically speaking, the head master of the school, who in all likelihood will remain with the school for some time, is an arrogant, foolish, sexist, incompetent, manipulative, primitive individual who would be better suited as a street sweeper. How or why he was given the position of head master is beyond comprehension. I am talking about a man who threatened to withhold his Chinese employee’s salary if they could not recruit new students for English lessons. I am talking about a man who degrades his employees by fear and intimidation. Although this factor did not have a direct affect on myself or my girlfriend, no one, neither foreign nor Chinese should ever consider working for a person like this.
In closing, our experience at the (School Name Removed) (real name of school) has been a miserable and depressing time, and I must state for the last time, under no circumstances should anyone consider working for this school.
Be careful guys!

Think twice before you take the decision to join (school name removed) Jeddah. The place is the worst to be in; the management is the most dishonest to work under and the students are the scum of the society; the most disinterested; the most disruptive; the most rowdy and the most ill-mannered.
Working somewhere else for 5000 riyals a month is far better than working here for 10000 riyals: because they will force you to work twelve hours instead of eight hours, in split shift and some times in three shifts. The breaks: tea break, lunch break and the prayer time will be deducted from your duty time. You will have no medical coverage because being ill is forbidden here. For one day’s absence, three days salary will be deducted from your monthly salary.
Last but not the least before joining (school name removed) Jeddah visit (school name removed); this is the place where you will be tortured, insulted and degraded; OR ask any teacher working for (name removed) Jeddah.
Hello,
You should ask them
1. How they deal with unmotivated students.
2. How they would use a book that had nobearing on what the students NEEDED to know.
3. How they will deal with classes where 100% of the students cheat on tests.
4. How they would like working in a system that if the students fail it is ALWAYS the teacher's fault. It doesn't matter if their son didn't come to class and slept when he did.
5. How he would feel when students treated him as a 2nd class citizen and made no bones about threatening to get him deported.

It is the teacher who can effectively deal with these problems that will mak a good teacher.
Hello,

May I know what cultural programs do you wish to offer? Do they require related teaching experience or skills?

Hi Jason,

I found these websites which may answer your questions regarding teaching in Italy:

http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/work/esl/italy.shtml
http://www.americantesol.com/teach-in-Italy.htm

I understand this is just a forum and not many of us care about our own English skills when writing in these situations. However, I thought I would add this for new ESL/EFL teachers to think about:

As an ESL employer, I rarely interview teachers whose application letters or resumes contain frequent errors, such as spelling and obvious punctuation errors. You might like to check your punctuation - apostrophe and lower case/upper case usage (e.g., "American's and "english").

I believe many teachers are eliminated from the interview process based on these simple errors.
If a student wishes to have writing classes, it is expected that the ESL/EFL teacher would know common punctuation rules.

Good luck in Italy

Hey all- I'm new to ESL-employment.com and I was hoping to get some advice into American's who want to teach english abroad in Western Europe.

Basically:
1) Will the E.U (Italy in particular) hire American's and go through the bureaucratic process of getting their work visa for them?

2) if anyone knows if it's possible to get a work visa with a bachelor's degree and TEFL certificate from a private/public school in Italy??

I'm planning on moving to Rome in April, and this info would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Unfortunately there is no simple soluiton to this problem. Self-regulation has no credibility at all. As long as ELT is seen as a commercial activity it will be subject to market forces and the only advice to teachers and students is caveat emptor.

I think the advice to those who wish to choose a school, either as students or teachers, is to research the establishment meticulously, It will have a history, a brochure, former clients who can be referees. If there is a respectable accreditation system in its country of establishment, then look for recognition by that.

I would once have felt confident insaying that state provided courses would be a safe bet. This is not longer the case, since everybody is scrambling for foreign earnings. Do your homework; check references.

Fellow ESL Pro's,

There have been dozens of discussions on this and many other boards regarding different standard in accreditation, governing bodies, and how to separate good schools from bad ones.

It's a sad part of our industry that for all of the great language schools out there, there are just as many really bad ones. Many people have realized this, and thus several countries have begun regulating the ESL industry. In some cases this has been a good thing, and will hopefully provide some protection for teachers, school owners, and students alike.

But, my dealings with the lovely bureaucracy that is the US government leaves me leery of any industry regulation by governments. It usually means additional licenses, permits, and of course lovely fees. Aside from another reason to give governments more of our money, it also means there is likely to be someone who knows very little about our industry putting their noses into everything.

Now, if we had no regulation of the Language Education industry, we end up with bad guys. Its too bad, but they exist. Just look at the boards, and you'll see warning messages about schools. Some of these complaints are not legit, but unfortunately most are.

Therefore I propose this to you all. To prevent being forced into several government regulating schemes, we voluntarily choose to regulate ourselves.

I propose forming an organization that would have the eventual goal of regulating our industry. Even though it would be I suppose non-binding, and voluntary, I believe the simple fact of forming a collective effort would be a big step.

Every industry with an academic nature has a similar organization. They are not usually just associations which only provide networking, but normally also address academic concerns as well. These are normally referred to as colleges. Dentists have the International College of Dentistry, Exercise Science has the International College of Applied Kinesiology.

I propose forming the "College of Applied Linguists & Language Educators".

It would be basically what it says. A network of professionals who study, teach, or work in the realm of world languages and linguistics.

I know there are already organizations for trade purposes, or some like the British Council that are more like shells for them to sell schools their products. But I think there is a definite need for a simple, common, global organization though which we can share ideas, agree on standards, and speak with a common voice.

Please let me know what you think.

Also, please email me if you're interested in working on this.

Thanks,
ESL Issues for School Owners... :: RE: Seeking Partners for ESL at Sea Program

Yeah, this is definitely a niche market. The prospective student would be a professional (upper management or executive type) with either personal disposable income or a company willing to pay a decent price for their training.

Other perspective clients would be groups or teams preparing for a trip abroad who require a crash course in their field. Or, doctors, lawyers, or other professionals who may be interested in seeking employment in an English-speaking country and need to provide a practical side to their university training.

Basically, these guys have some money to spend, and would rather fork out some cash for a quality product, than waste their time (which is probably more valuable to them than a few bucks) on an inefficient course.

When it actually comes to cost there are two things to look at. 1, the cost of a semi-private cruise / fishing trip/ charter can be anywhere from 800-10000. 2. Most of the othr executive immersion courses out there already cost between $1000 and 5000. And that's for a course that requires them to travel to say London, only offers half a days class time, doesn't guarantee a truely immersive environment and provides no additional entertainment options.

So, the ESL at sea program could easily charge anywhere from $2000-3000 each for the 7-10 day packages. Since there would probably be between 10-14 students per cruise, the income for a single session would be high.

Now as for Employees and pay.

When I said keep costs low, I meant in contrast to 1. other charter businesses, 2. traditional ESL schools, & 3. meaning not to waste money when duplication is possible.

Now a couple of things to point out:

1. This is a Motor Yach, not a sail boat. Other than regular maintanence and occasional steering adjustments, there really isn't much to running it. With modern Nav controls and GPS, its really similar to driving a car (just a much bigger road). So this isn't like the sailing adventures where the crew and students work their asses off all day. This layout is much more like a floating mini-resort, that can move around the place.

2. There are a couple of jobs which would not be suited to splitting duties with teaching. Those are ship's Chef, and Engineer / Maintenance. The cook is really the only position that has to be up early everyday. And, with proper planning he only has to be up ahead of he passengers by an hour or so. And definitely, if I had to choose between being at sea with a decent ESL teacher or really good diesel mechanic, I'm chosing the mechanic. Plus, I wouldn't want my ESL instructors turning down bedsheets and cleaning toilets.

3. When I say Instructors doubling as crew, I mean that in addition to running training sessions, they may be in charge of taking the passengers snorkelling, or setting up for fishing, taking a turn at the helm, or spending an hour at the bar mixing cocktails and chatting with the students.

I was thinking about how this whole set up would have to work. I did realize a few things. First, you'd have to make sure the staff was all CPR, First Aid certified. I'm a certified Red Cross trainer, so that's easy. We'd need to find an ESL instructor that was scuba certified, or willing to be (should be easy enough).

Now, how it would have to work. We'd have to find a home base. If I had to just pick one out of my hat, I'd probably say Galveston, Texas. Being adjacent to Houston (America's 4th Largest City) it has everything you could need as a resident. Plus, with two major international airports, it would be an easy destination for international clients. Finally, Galveston is a great (and fairly cheap) resort town, with available waterfront and marina access directly to the open sea).

The home base would provide the following:

1. A place to maintain the vessel and store equipment and supplies.
2. a Land home for the teachers and crew.
3. an orientation site for clients.

Ideally we would rent a house big enough for our teachers to live in, provide an office, and storage space. We could use one of the local hotels for orientation. It would give the students a place to spend the night after their flights, a chance to meet each other, and mingle a bit (good nightlife), and a chance for us to teach them about yacht safety before going on board.

One thing I have never liked about a lot of jobs I've had is getting the feeling like you're never not at work. I think it is really important for teachers and staff to feel like their job gives them a rewarding work experience but also that they have time to enjoy their surroundings and pay when they're not at work.

Teachers would all have free housing at the home base. They would also have crew quarters on board. When a class is in session, they would work some fairly long days (even if part of those days are spent lying on a beach somewhere). But when they're in home port they'd be off, completely off.

So a teacher may work for 7-14 days straight preparing and conducting a class. But then they'd have an equal amount of time off. If they want to stay home and enjoy themselves, they could. Or if they wanted to load up and fly home they could. Or, if we had an additional charter available, they could volunteer to go out as crew on that, earn more cash, and spend their off time relaxing on board.

That said, the pay would be pretty decent. It wouldn't be super, but it would definitely be better than the vast majority of ESL jobs. I would hope it would be at least $1000-2000 per month. And, since when you're out at sea every meal, beer, and pina colada is provided free, it should go far. By US standards (non ESL US standards) it's not so high, but when you think about the nature of the job, it's pretty damn sweet.

OK, so there's a marathon email, but I hope it answers some questions. Please if you're even the slightest bit interested in this idea, chime in. I'm looking for input.

As far as I can tell this has never been attempted, so planning is going to be a learning process.

Thanks again,

Andres,

First of all, this idea sounds fascinating. That's my opinion.

Second, I'll address the item that I quoted from your post:

When you say you want to keep costs low, am I assuming the salaries for the staff would be low too? Maybe I'm asking this on behalf of others who are reading this but are too afraid to ask: Please explain what doubling duties as boat crew means in real terms: 8 hour days? Longer? Swabbing decks or cooking food?

Sounds like you might need to hire ESL teachers with various occupational abilities (lifeguard trained, for instance?).

Other than that, sounds like liability insurance might be a big part of your overhead, especially if this is going to appeal only to those of a certain economic class. Maybe you'll offer some scholarships as incentive / promotions?

I know that some cruise ships give free tickets to distinguished lecturers who agree to "speak" during various times at sea. You might look at that option too for avoiding salaries, especially if these are 7 day deals.

Good luck and let us know what develops,
I am exploring the possibility of establishing an at-Sea ESL program. Startup costs would be fairly low and non-ESL yacht charters would help pay for initial investment and provide ongoing income.

We have access to a 110' classic Motor Yacht (actually the boat from the film "Some like it hot"). Startup costs would be refit of the interior of the vessel which is mechanically sound and seaworthy.

ESL instructors would double as crew for the boat, keeping costs low. Ideal situation would be to offer 7-10 day ESL immersion cruises. Easy setup for crusing along the Caribbean and gulf coasts of Mexico. Ability to offer business professionals (individuals or teams from one company) the opportunity to develop language skills while cruising in the style and elegance of yachting's heyday.

Could easily offer all-inclusive package including deep-sea fishing, coastal exploration, and cultural excursions at very little cost.

Would consider individual investors, timeshare agents, or alliances with existing English schools wishing to offer an additional service to their clients.

Please contact me with any questions (or post comments here). I'd also appreciate any input from anyone out there.
I am from New York City. I have been teaching drama and filmmaking with the International Schools around Asia and US almost seven years. Last few years, I had to travel to Pakistan to do the educational documentary film and I saw a huge business in the teaching English language schools.

I have come to understand that its different kind a country and that is the reason many investors are afraid of get involved. But during my stay in Pakistan, I learnt about the culture and had a good understanding of the society. And also the government of Pakistan sees English Language schools a positive change in the society.
So I see a huge opportunity in Pakistan with the Language schools.

I am not looking for very big investment. I am looking for people with vision and understanding of different culture. This is an opportunity of building a bridge in between the East and West.

Please email me soon if you would like more information. If you have an extra cash and a vision to built better foundation in the developing countries.

One I could complain about how tough life is as an ESL teacher...and second it would give me some credits with mums that's im' staying in touch with her yada yada yada.. So to me this is the obvious choice. I can kill two birds with one stone.

Where did you get the capital to start up your language school? I was tnking about getting a grant myself or going into Southern Central Europe like Zagrzehb or somewhere like that, I've heard of a lot of Americans running schools down there as the region is so stable now
Not web site yet, but we are working on it. We are still getting through the endless maze of red tape to get all the documents in order.

We were told by the local post office that it's better to have a name attached to the address. It's not like in the States where you can mail to any company and any address and be pretty sure it will be delivered.

We are also prepared to issue a receipt (which can be notarized too) for any goods received. Generally goods up to 50 bucks would be fine. Anything over that is not much to us because it is subject to custom duties and fees.

We already received some stuff from overseas in so called M-bags, approximately dollar per pound via air mail

Culture & Exchange Program

The “American Studio”, a Non Government, Non Profit Organization is being formed in Serbia and Montenegro, precisely in city of Novi Sad in Northern Province of Vojvodina. We have chosen Vojvodina because of its long history of cultural diversity and ethnic tolerance. It is an independent organization formed by active and experienced ESL/EFL teachers from the USA and Europe whose purpose is to educate and inform.

The mission of the 'The American Studio is "to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world."

In order to promote life concerns and human development, The American Studio will organize its own activities and sponsor a variety of cultural exchange programs. Our mission is Teaching English and American Culture with an emphasis on children, and young professionals who wish to participate in American Business environment

The American Studio will cooperate and collaborate with local schools and universities, educational and research institutions and other government or non-government organizations throughout the region.
The American Studio Educational Organization will also support cultural exchange between Vojvodina and USA. One of the tasks of the Organization is to enable people to participate in various international cultural events, in keeping with the wishes of the cultural sphere.
To conduct these activities, the organization's financial matter originates from the fee of its members, donation and charity from individual, governmental and non governmental organization etc.

We spent a great deal of personal resources to establish the organization. We do not necessarily need money (although we could use it), but we are in dire need of teaching supplies such as English books, tapes, CD’s. Also we are in great need of children’s resources such as picture books, flash cards, etc… Any help will be greatly appreciated (and tax exempt if you donate from the USA)

If you’d like to support our foundation, please contact the president of the “American Studio” Peter Z Bugarchich at pbugarchich@hotmail.com.

When you say "How can I assess them at the end of the year?", are you talking about assessing their job performance and teaching ability throughout the year?

Michigan you mean, as in Chicago, the capital of Michigan.

Are you still hiring as I may meet your criteria. But you don't seem to be a native speaker yourself. This gives me a lot of hope for the future of non-native speakers out there, who I promote.

Dear camelcarl,
Thank you for your kind reply. I just would like to add that the instructors I'm going to select are not native speakers only. They may be Egyptians, Saudis, Syrians, Africans. etc.

I wanted to have suggestions about how to test them both in written and orally. The tradition here is to do that using an extract of the TOEFL test. But I have an idea of doing that using Mechigan Proficienct Test of English. I hope that I'll hear your suggestions about that. By the way, do you have anywebsite or links to sites about Mechigan Proficienct Test of English?
Thanks
Take care

This may sounds obvious but all of your oral interview questions should be opened ended...let them talk as much or as little as they like. This will tell you alot about someones personailty, professionalism, etc. Don't be afraid to ask the tough questions either....why exactly do they want to teach in the middle east...what is their motivation for going there? What interest them about the job...If i were in your shoes I'd try and determine their underlying motiviation right off...this is going to tell you 90% of the time if the teacher will be committed to the position.

Don't be afraid to push your prospective employees before you hire them...better to see their true colors upfront...then 5 months down the road.

Hello everybody,
I'm going to select a group of EFL teachers to work in Saudi Arabia. I would like to have your help concerning the following:
1- What are the items they could be tested in?
2- What are the question i can ask them in the oral interview?
3- How can i assess them at the end of the year?
Thanks

Hello I am a freshman at Kent State University. I am looking for people to interview for an English project. I am looking for someone who has a degree in early or middle childhood education and is currently or has taught in Europe or the UK. All I need answered are a few questions about the job and how you use writing in your job. Anyone interested can email me at jstenger@kent.edu. Hi Chris,

Just read your message and would like a little more info. I live in San Diego, CA, have a M.A. Education, TESOL and have an EU passport. I have some experience teaching ESL and have always thought about living/working in Europe. Can you tell me more about the cost of this venture, do you have teachers lined up, do have the teaching materials etc.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I'm male 39 - looking for TEFL/TESOL qualified partner to set up a small centre in Ireland to provide cultural and linguistic homestay programmes for European students of English. No big investment, just share house rental, I've got contacts in France who will send students early 2005
