Faux Fur Fashion Show

The Fab Faux Fur Fashion Show, set for noon Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Ore House at Milagro, is part of the Santa Fe Winter Fiesta. The show features the latest in faux fur fashions from popular Santa Fe boutiques. Models will be accompanied by canine escorts, who will also be dressed for the runway.

The show, organized and hosted by Trixie Con Queso, a local performer, will benefit the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and the Española Valley Humane Society.

Cost for the show is $10 at the door; $5 for Fiesta Adventure Pass holders. The luncheon costs $12. Fiesta passes, which can be used for discounts to events and ski-lift passes, are available online at www.santafe.com.

Bentley

Bentley was a 2 month old tuxedo kitty who had a very serious injury when he came to us in November of 2011. He was found on the side of a road. He was not moving very well and was breathing quicker than normal, but had bright eyes. We treated him for pain and gave him TLC with our fingers crossed. By that afternoon he was eating some food so we thought perhaps all he needed was more time.

Almost two weeks later, just to be sure everything was healing okay, we did some x-rays and found out that his pelvis and knee were healing well, but he had a diaphragmatic hernia. What that means is that his stomach, spleen, part of his liver and some of his intestines were actually in his chest. This can happen after trauma. Surgery to repair in such a small creature is high risk, but we wanted to give him the chance to live.

Dr. Ellen Platas at Cottonwood Vet Clinic successfully surgically repaired the diaphragm. He stayed in a special foster home until fully recovered. Just before Christmas, he was adopted out of our Barkin Boutique Thrift Store in Santa Fe with another “special needs” kitten. A very happy holiday ending for a very deserving kitten!

Annual Walk Every Dog Day

Every year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our shelter invites members of the public to come in and help us walk all of our dogs in one day. This is a great activity for groups or families to do on their day off while giving back to the animals in our community. Volunteers are invited to come to the shelter for 2 hours and spend time with either cats or dogs. Two shifts are available (11am-1pm, 2pm-4pm) and a short training starts off each shift. Please RSVP to Nina with the shift you would like to volunteer for and the number of people in your group at EVHSNina@gmail.com. Children ages 6 and up are welcome to attend with an adult. Volunteers may choose to work with cats, dogs or both.

Herding Dog Adoption Day

Do you love high-energy, extremely intelligent dogs? Then this is the event for you! This event will focus on dogs who appear to be herding-type breeds including heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs), Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, German Shepherds and a few of their non-herding friends (labs, pits, and little dogs too…), so come on down to this fun adoption fair and bring a frisbee!

Thanks to PetSmart, all adopters at this event will receive a free bag of dog or puppy food and a book of coupons.

Ice Skating and Pet Adoptions

This Saturday, the Genoveva Chavez Community Center is hosting a special ice skating event. What goes better with ice skating than puppies? Espanola Valley Humane Society will be there from 11am-2pm with adoptable pets so come on down and make a day of it.

Holiday Toy and Coat Drive

Holiday Toy and Coat Drive for shelter pets
Each year, we hang stockings on every cage in the kennels and by the end of the month, we hope to have every stocking stuffed with toys. We are looking for toys of all shapes and sizes, for cats, dogs, kittens and puppies. The toys can be new or gently used- the animals don’t mind! Stuffed animals for cuddling, rubber toys for chewing, or even a box of ping-pong balls would be super for the cat room. We are also looking for dog coats/sweaters in all sizes, to help keep our doggies warm in the concrete kennels and during winter mobile adoption events. (Fun fact: Dogs wearing coats are also adopted more quickly than the “naked” ones.) If you are able to donate one toy or host a toy/coat drive in your office, school or church, we would be very appreciative. Maybe you would even consider asking holiday party guests to bring a gift for a shelter animal? Drop-offs of donations can be done at Pet Pangaea in Los Alamos, the Barkin Boutique in Santa Fe or at the shelter in Espanola.

Home for the Holidays MEGA Adoption event

This is one of the biggest adoption events in the state and we are proud to be a part of it thanks to our friends at Watermelon Mountain Ranch. Hundreds of adoptable pets will be at this 2-day event in Albuquerque, including a large number from Espanola. You are sure to find your perfect match while helping a homeless animals holiday wishes come true. Saturday, December 17th 10am-5pm, Sunday December 18th, 10am-4pm. Petsmart on 10248 Coors Bypass (near the Cottonwood Mall) in Albuquerque. Hope to see you there!

CeCe and Neutron

In July 2011, CeCe was a 4 month old heeler puppy whose owners brought her to us requesting humane euthanasia. She couldn’t keep food down and the owners could not afford surgery for what their vet thought could be a foreign body stuck in her intestines. The owners agreed to let us try to save her instead of putting her to sleep. Dr. Trina Hadden performed the enterotomy that same day and removed a stuck corn cob piece. After days of hospitalization, we knew she’d be just fine. She is was adopted to a new home and is staying away from corn on the cob!

Neutron was 3 months old and was brought to us after being attacked by a dog. He couldn’t stand, had only a bit of feeling in his hind legs, had a punctured thorax – but his eyes were full of life and with great energy he talked and talked when you visited or examined him. We all fell in love and decided to give him some time to recover from nerve damage in his back. Slowly he got more and more movement back in the hind legs. Dr. Ramsay at Cottonwood Vet pinned his broken right front leg and he was adopted to a great home.
