The world of Art is complex and occupies an important place within our society. It is the vocation of the artist to open our minds by allowing us to see, hear, and understand our surroundings, but this role is sometimes taken for granted. The responsibility lies with every individual within a society to use the insight that Art provides and become attuned to the pulse of his or her culture. There are many people in the world who feel within themselves that beautiful drive to create and offer a new perspective, a fresh and exciting angle from which to contemplate life. Some are not as widely known as others, but the significance of their work is not diminished.

For the past 20 years now, as a filmmaker, director, journalist or photographer for various institutions around the world, during my travels, I recorded what I saw and heard, and in these multimedia journals, I always try to see beyond what is visible because a camera gives you the opportunity to get closer, to see what the human eye does not perceive. Over the years, I stocked and archived digital content from all over the world, and when the Internet revolution arised, i thought it our my duty to share some of these productions with the www.

In this web site, you will find artists who have not necessarily achieved great fame, but people admirable for their work dedication and excellence in the Arts, whether it’s music, painting, sculpture, photography, filmaking, poetry, or wine making. Most of the films and photographs fall outside of what might be considered “mainstream,” but each of them reveals a strong story, a very different human being that presents a piece to the vast puzzle of life.

Bon Voyage !

This is a 21 minute film, in Full High Definition. These images are extracted from the film.

Sunrise above Casco Bay, on the coast of Maine.
Facing 70° East, titled “What’s Wrong With This”
The answer to this question relies at 17:18 after the beginning of the film…
Despite the Tar Sand Oil Threat for the coast of Maine and Sebago lake clearwaters, voters have defeating a waterfront protection ordinance that would have essentially prevented the loading of oil sand crude, also known as tar sands, onto ships at South Portland’s waterfront.
There were 4,453 votes against the ordinance versus 4,261 votes for the ordinance, according to the clerk’s office. 192 votes that made a difference. So 96 (+ 1) people would have been able to change that decision and Maine waters would have been protected from a potential danger.
Sebago Lake is the deepest and second largest lake in Maine and supplies the town of Portland. It is the primary water supply for the Portland Water District. The Tar sandoils are particularly corrosive, volatile and toxic. Having a 63-year-old pipeline linking Portland to Montreal with oil, is an obvious potential hazard and a risk to be taken. Not to mention the constant flow of huge Oil Tankers in the beautiful Casco Bay. The Portland City Council recently passed a resolution saying the city is “concerned” about tar sands oil. The waters of Maine are so clean, and the ocean still unpolluted right now. Let’s hope the future generations will have the same chance that we have. One can only think of Rotterdam or Honk Kong, to illustrate what could happen in the long run, in several generations.
The oil tanker that traverses the screen at 18:09, a few seconds after a flying Loon, is a metaphor for what these Tar Oil tanker will do to us; they will darken the horizon and eventually prevent us from seeing the sunrise…Catastrophe…!!!

Ever since she was a teenager, Mrs Rudolph was enamoured with Black and white photography, she is considered as one of the pioneer woman photographers of the 20th century.

Everywhere she would go, she was kept company by her Leica M6 and would capture the world surrounding her. Nancy has the capacity to connect with people, penetrate barriers, quickly privileged an intimate view point for a subject. From Plum village with Thich Nhat Hanh, to New York city’s meat packing district, Greenwich village, her 11 St studio was brimming with her photographs, journals and life stories.

Her numerous travels have taken her to Tibet, India, America, Europe, and beyond…Her entourage was left with a poignant testimony of many moments from the past, capturing the undefinable through her Leica M6 lens.

Right next to Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Margaret Bourke-White or Annie Leibovitz, Nancy Rudolph is one of the most talented and important 20th century photographer, yet still unknown to the public eye.
Here are a few images from her collection and a short interview shot in France, a few years ago.

This month’s West Village Original is photographer Nancy Rudolph, who began photographing in the late 1940’s while working in Europe through the Marshall Plan. Her first photographic essay appeared in the New York Times Magazine in the 1950’s. Throughout her career she has had seventeen solo exhibits and has created three photo books. Ms. Rudolph is currently working on her illustrated memoir in the same house on West 11th Street she has lived in since 1956.
After a few unsuccessful attempts at college as a young woman, Nancy Rudolph’s mother suggested she take up shorthand and typing. It was a suggestion that would turn out to have far-reaching consequences. “My mother said I could go anywhere and get any kind of job with those skills,” Rudolph recalls. “So I went to Sadie Brown’s Collegiate Secretarial School in the Grand Central Building. I must have had ten jobs in one year! I was not cut out for that kind of work.”

Nancy Rudolph as a young woman in Rome, 1949.

Eventually, Rudolph went to Europe and was living in Paris where she applied for a job through the Marshall Plan. “There were a lot of Americans in Paris those days, both on the GI Bill and working for the government,” she says. “I applied at the ECA (Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs) and ended up working in Rome for a couple of years as a secretary doing—of all things—shorthand and typing. As pleased as my mother was with that, she was very upset that I overstayed my time in Europe and I wasn’t at home getting married!” Rudolph laughs. “But I had a wonderful life there. I finally did come home, met Alan Rudolph, and married him.”

While Rudolph subsequently “liberated” herself after twenty-five years of marriage to her husband, the photography she began doing while overseas remained a constant in her life. “I started as a painter,” she relates. “When I went to Europe, I brought my paints and easel and an old camera that belonged in the family. And when I was in Rome, I took a trip with a friend to Berlin. This was during the time of the airlift. We stayed with an army officer and his family so I went to the PX and bought myself a decent camera. The first real photographs I took were of people digging out of war-torn Berlin. That was 1949.”
Why did photography become her means of expression? “I always wanted to say things about the human condition,” Rudolph explains. “I have a big social conscience and I wanted to spotlight issues that I thought should be examined and understood and, if necessary, changed. That was the real motivation of my photography. I couldn’t do that through painting so that’s why I picked up a camera. I understood a lot more through photographs.” This approach to the medium also informed her philosophy of it as well. “I never looked at photography as an art,” she says. “I looked at it as a way to say something about the world.”

A resident of the Village since the 50’s, Rudolph claims this is the only place she wanted to live in New York. “I’ve never lived in any other part of the city,” she says. “My husband wanted to move to the suburbs because he grew up in New York. And I grew up in the suburbs on Long Island and vowed never to go back!” With such longevity, it’s no surprise that Rudolph’s strongest desire is “to preserve as much of the Village as can be preserved.” “I was involved with the whole Jefferson Market Courthouse fight when they were trying to tear it down,” she says. “I was also very involved in Washington Square Park when they were going to put Fifth Avenue right through it. I think that was the first victory that citizens had over an issue like that.”

While Rudolph’s love affair with Greenwich Village continues to this day, it is difficult at times to reconcile the past with the present. One of the biggest changes for her is the growth of both NYU and the New School in her neighborhood. “The New School has never been very invasive, but now it is,” she says. “I think it’s awful. And then I say to my son, ‘I think it’s terrible!’ like an old codger. But my son replies that these people are being educated to go into the world and make a difference. So how can you argue against that?”

This is the story of a documentary currently in the making about this festival. The film above is directed and produced by Noted documentary filmmaker Jim Whitney.

The Sweet Chariot Music and Art Festival takes place on Swans Island, in the heart of Acadia National park, a remote island with no restaurant, no general store and no place to stay. The three-day event draws a family of musicians, poets and artists from across the world since two decades.

The opulence wealth of the nearby continent, its chorus charged with history, its notes disembarked from all the old boats, and the scent of the sea, melodies filled with compasses, random voices of the winds…Music on port and starboard.

Several autumns ago, a group of artists have decided to take the sea and with their most beautiful voices, to marry the very traditional American folk with the misty tales of the harbor taverns. Then, the crew became bigger, the water less troubled, the voices louder…to share the adventure, they organized a festival, the Sweet Chariot music and art festival.

Here is what Susan Axelrod from Maine Magazine wrote a few years ago about the festival’s story:
“From in and around the old white farmhouse on Swan’s Island, a melodic hum floats on the warm August Breeze. A fiddle player lounges in the grass, picking out a tune, while someone naps in a hammock on the porch. Inside, the remains of a cold buffet lunch are on the kitchen island, and a group of singers is clustered around an upright piano in the front parlor. In the barn, two young men perch on milk crates—one strumming a dobro, the other a standard guitar—jamming with banjo player Bob Lucas as he sings the refrain of a North Carolina bootlegger’s song: “And the lamb will lay down with the lion, after drinking that old moonshine.”

“Come into my office,” Day says with a grin, ushering me into a plastic chair under an apple tree while he sprawls in a wooden wheelbarrow. Day proceeds to tell us about the event he has put every summer for almost 30 years now. For its relatively large size and proximity to the mainland—six miles—Swans is short on amenities. There are no hotels, restaurants, or even places to camp, just a handful of rooms at bed and breakfasts and one small general store (which does not sell alcohol), with an adjacent snack shack. Working with a small budget, about half from subsidized ticket sales and half from modest gifts, Day makes arrangements for the 30-plus performers to be housed in private homes. Many of them have been part of the festival for decades and see their annual visit as more of a chance to play together than a working gig. “The best audiences for musicians are other musicians,” Day says. “The limits that the remote location impresses, the isolation of the island and the gathering of poets, musicians and artists creates a very powerful, colorful and visual painting of portraits in music, frozen in time.”

A majority of the festival attendees are island residents, and the rest arrive by boat, notably members of Maine’s schooner fleet, which include Swan’s Island on their schedule of overnight stops during festival week. The three nights of performances at the island’s 225-seat Odd Fellows Hall always sell out. mall boats, and kayaks. The remoteness contributes to the soulfulness and the magic of it, the trigger to address the history of sea shanties and its maritime history.

Despite the glamourous aspect of the remote island and its cohort of musicians, the after parties hold the magic of the festival; the acoustic stage outside on the back deck with the banjo players and the fiddlers and the mandolin players; who carry on up to two or three o’clock in the morning. Folkloric music is poetry, is modern literature in sound, we use the festival and its multitalented cohort of musicians, playwrights, poets, painters to talk about its roots, its history and the predominance importance of arts and culture in our lives.

Day calls out to Lucas, strolling out of the barn with his banjo, to contribute to the conversation. “Every year we draw from each other’s collective juice, because it takes a lot to get here—time, money, energy, organization,” says Lucas, who lives in Ohio and has traveled to the island with his wife, daughter, and baby grandson. “Others, like Bob [Lucas], have put serious currency in the soul bank to make this happen,” says Day. “Because soul matters so much to us artists,” Lucas replies, chuckling. “If you ain’t got soul, you ain’t got nothing. Now we got to go sing on a boat.”

The rehearsal gradually breaks up, and we meet an eager group on a dock in Burnt Coat Harbor, where the 32-foot brigantine Redbird is tied up. The ship’s owner and captain, Daisy Nell, and her partner, Stan Collinson, known as Captain Stan, invite us aboard. Both are musicians from Massachusetts, where Nell founded the Gloucester Schooner Festival. We recognize the two guitarists who were playing with Lucas in the barn, Magnus Ferguson and Cody Gibson; together with fiddler Reid Jenkins they make up the Morningsiders, one of the newer groups to join the festival, young Morningsiders are notorious on the NYC new music renaissance scene. Jenkins is a second-generation participant; along with his parents, Richard and Sandy, and sisters, Stephanie and Cassandra, all musicians, he has performed at Sweet Chariot since he was a child – we see him perform on stage as a six-year-old as he reminisce about his first festival. As soon as we pull away from the dock, Nell leads the group into their first shanty, “I thought I heard the old man say, John Kanaka-naka-tu-lai-e,” accompanied by a drum and tambourine. We glide past the crew and passengers of two schooners, the American Eagle and the Lewis R. French, and weave through other boats at anchor. All the while a band of smaller craft—kayaks, paddleboards, and a little gaff rig dinghy— trails us like a flock of ducklings. Standing amidships on the Redbird, Geoff Kaufman, who runs the annual Sea Music Festival at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, pulls out a squeezebox and launches into a rousing version of “Strike the Bell,” with everyone chiming in mightily on the chorus. We wrap up the magical experience with Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O” as Nell steers the Redbird back to shore.

Out of this river of sound, sweet and precious melodies, will emerge the story of the Nouvelle France, its Acadian and maritime history, we will address the history of Maine and its French influence over the past centuries, an influence that is still very present in the folklore tradition of the island.

A short while later, we arrive at the Swan’s Island Odd Fellows Hall, which is festooned with hand-lettered banners announcing the festival. We’ve been invited to join the musicians for a pre-performance dinner, prepared by a brigade of volunteers. It seems as if everyone on the island contributes to the festival in some way, by housing performers, cooking, or driving the school bus that brings schooner passengers and island residents to the hall for the evening shows. Dinner is a colorful buffet of baked cod, red beans and rice, coleslaw, corn, and mango and black bean salsa, followed by one more rehearsal before ticket holders arrive. In the second-floor performance space, local artist Buckley Smith has started painting a mural on a piece of canvas stretched across the back wall of the stage; he will continue to add to the piece, which depicts this year’s festival theme—gypsies and mermaids—as part of the evening’s performance. We give him the stage as images of his poetic and dreamy flying schooners create yet another strong visual enchantment to our narration and approach to the nautical element of the story.

The story continues opening with a Mardi Gras-Esque procession, led by Richard Jenkins on the trumpet. Kaufman swaps boisterous sea shanties for a melodic ballad, accompanied by Eric Kilburn on mandolin. All the performers gather on stage to finish with what Day calls a “final hippie hymn,” led by Dean Stevens and inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Oh children, don’t you weary. Walk together; believe in the dream. When the way gets rough, we’ll make a new way. Let justice roll down like a mighty stream.”

The night air is soft, but it’s dark on the island, the musicians are grateful for the trail of candlelit luminaries lining the driveway to guide them to the afterparty. Musicians are jamming around a piano and on the back-deck jamming, smiling, connecting, and relishing the time together to exchange hymns, poetry and stories from another time. Dillon Bustin takes us on a final journey in the stars with his adaptation of a R.W. Emerson poem “teach me your moods, Oh Patient stars” and delivers a final message on poetry, love and life. “

For almost 30 years now, I attended The Sweet Chariot Music and Art Festival. The same group of musicians have gathered on a secret little island on the Coast of Maine every summer to share Music, Art, Love and Food. I started documenting the festival every year, 18 years ago, and the story goes on…

You can find a few Video Clips of these various films on youtube. Here are a few talented musician who have a presence online.

After obtaining a degree in Folklore and Anthropology at Indiana University, he returned to his native Massachusetts with a wealth of great songs from the Ohio River area, including the oft-recorded “Shawneetown,” “Bayou Sara,” and “Cranberry Bogs.” Dillon is also known for his theatrical musicals which include “Walden Pond Revisited,” “Come Life, Shaker Life: The Spiritual Quest of Isaacar Bates” and a number of productions based on characters from the history of Martha’s Vineyard.

The latter form a trilogy called “Tidebook: an Island Rhapsody” which is comprised of “Tallman at the Dock,” “The Captain’s Daughters” and “The Journeys of Joshua Slocum.”

Amongst other activities, Dillon is also a film director. Unfortunately, his work is extremely hard to find. His latest CD is out of stock, his films are not available anywhere and his books are out of print…Where can you find his work? Here you have the same blood, the same talent. It is as simple as that. Austin is a guitar virtuoso, a talented musician and a fun guy! Both he and his father create sticky tunes, melodies that once heard, do not go away. These are songs that stay with you and that you find yourself humming in the street. This is the album that was recorded at Bob’s house in Ohio. It is a masterpiece created by Austin Lucas, his father and Chuck Ragan.

Along with the other musicians of this list, Dean has a special place in the heart of everyone who has been fortunate enough to meet him. Not only is he a wonderful songwriter and an overtalented guitar player, but he is also a missionary of love.Dean spends part of his time in Guatemala helping the people of his community to live a better life and writes beautiful hymns to simple life stories. The release of his latest album «At Last» is a beautiful collection of songs that I could only advise the reader to acquire as soon as possible.
This song I recorded on Swans Island a couple of years ago is one of my favourite song from Dean Stevens, “Old Man in his garden” :

This is a well-deserved prize for one of the most beautiful guitar players that one can have the pleasure of listening to. “Guitarpenter’s dream” captures the warmth and melody of Alan’s playing along with the occasional crackle of the fireplace of his house in Ojai. http://alanthornhill.com/music/
When Alan plays and you close your eyes, some say that you can share his dreams.

Tuning fork of the enamored sailors, the sea never ceased, storm after storm, and against all tides, to dismiss on its coastline the melancholia of the adventurer heart and of the scarred stories of all the sailors of the world.

And this generous muse, seducing the first rocks of Maine, has forgotten the waves on a striking landscape, revealing the colored imprint of countless seasons. A landscape of paradox where all the harmonies are gathering to make only one, where the landforms rub shoulders with the softer horizons, and mostly where men seem to prefer the small fishing boats to the big tankers. Finally, birthed from the foam caresses, Swans Island.

From in and around the old white farmhouse on Swan’s Island, a melodic hum floats on the warm August Breeze.

A minority of festival attendees are island residents, and the rest arrive by boat, notably members of Maine’s schooner fleet, which include Swan’s Island on their schedule of overnight stops during festival week. The three nights of performances at the island’s 225-seat Odd Fellows Hall always sell out. The other visual and unusual festival event is the sea shanties performance sung from a square-rigger schooner as it wanders around Burnt Coat Harbor to invite the audience, followed by a myriad of small boats, and kayaks.

Jenkins is a second-generation participant; along with his parents, Richard and Sandy, and sisters, Stephanie and Cassandra, all musicians, he has performed at Sweet Chariot since he was a child – we see him perform on stage as a six year old as he reminisce about his first festival (archival footage). To be continued…

Artistic Director Cindy Flanders reports that this year’s show includes works from new & returning designers. Styles run the spectrum from formal to street. Statement Jewelry pieces, repurposed, upcycled & embellished clothing as well as vintage inspired garments. WMPG’s Fashion Show strives to include a wide-ranging and energetic collection of the talent & creativity that is thriving in Maine.

Designers returning from previous programs include: Deb Train; Elynn Design; Aquarius Funk; Raisa; Kelli Burnham; Rayne Grace/kittywitch; and Stephanie Harmon.
New designers joining us this year include:Pamela Moulton, Mimi Mathleson; Jocelyn King; and Kenzie. Ms. Flanders advises us to take special note of these items of interest: Goth/punk inspired dresses by Kenzie; Finely constructed corsets by Kelli Burnham; Moss jacket/ wearable art designed by Rayne Grace, also known as the kittywitch; and Hand painted garments by Mimi M.The WMPG Fashion Show is a benefit for WMPG Community Radio, a volunteer-driven non-profit community radio station broadcasting 24 hours per day from the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine. WMPG broadcasts an eclectic schedule of programming, which includes music of many genres, local public affairs, and news, all free from corporate influence. Local listeners, businesses and organizations, and benefits events like the Fashion Show provide a large portion of the funding for WMPG. Listen to WMPG
