Liverpool is a hive of activity, a bustling avenue of industry, and despite its evidently starved footballers, it’s one of the nation’s busiest hub-centres; from its airport, to the intercity motorways that run through its heart, to its prestigious, thriving River Mersey. It may not surprise you to learn then, that upon the river, in one of its many docks, a huge £200m wastewater treatment facility is currently progressing on target and will soon be ready to increase the ecological aptitude of the entire area!

The plant itself, upon completion, will whirr into life and begin serving the 60,000 strong population, treating an incomparable 11,000 litres of water per second. It’s hard even to imagine that amount of water, though to put it in perspective, it will be the equivalent of filling 8 Olympic swimming pools every 30 minutes! Of course, this is going to deliver a massive boost to Liverpool’s ecological output, and construction cannot finish quickly enough.

Project Manager Lorne Large commented “It’s a state-of-the-art works and something Liverpool can be proud of. The River Mersey is in safe hands.” Reportedly, the construction process takes heritage as a predominant factor, with Large stating that if the site ever needed to revert back to being a dock, the transformation would still be entirely possible.

Indeed, the original docks were reclaimed en masse when the work began, and in their place will soon stand 16 huge wastewater treatment tanks and facilities. Since the ’80s, a time in which the Mersey was detailed as being the dirtiest river in Europe, a marked effort has been made to turn all this around, and this latest project exemplifies the extent the region is prepared to go to to ensure wastewater is treated right and the river becomes cleaner.

Wastewater is a serious concern for many up and down the country, and with new efforts and initiatives being launched seemingly every day to try and ensure we have a cleaner, greener tomorrow, it’s a topic at the forefront of the minds of many. Seemingly though, conditions and improvements in some places still aren’t quite up to the standards we need to achieve all our environmental objectives; and as such, by 2015, Wastewater legal standards are set to double. The big question is, are you ready for such a change, and what can you do about it right now?

The news comes after a water company in Sussex stated that ‘significant improvements’ need to occur in order to keep the seas clean. With a 25 year plan in place that sees the county achieving ‘Blue Flag’ status for its beaches – the highest possible status – there’s a significant amount of work to be done to turn everything around.

A spokeswoman for that company commented “Wastewater discharges to bathing waters already have to meet high standards. From 2015 the legal standards will be around twice as high as they are now.” Whilst this news is focused on bathing waters as a priority, the wastewater output of the entire country is consistently under scrutiny, more so with each passing week, and as a result, now is the best time to ensure you don’t need to be worrying about your wastewater processes at the last minute!

So what can be done? Here at Environmental Screening and Separation we provide all the necessary equipment to put a wastewater and sludge treatment policy into place, whether you’re a utility company or if you’re a contractor requiring such services. We have a range of sizes and a large variety of individual pieces of equipment, from compactors to containers, skips and some of the most efficient processing systems available.

Give us a call today and find out how you can make your wastewater policies a priority, simply and easily; ensuring you keep well within those ever evolving legal standards!

Wastewater treatment, of course, has many advantages, and in fact, we should be implementing it in every possible circumstance to try and ensure the continued existence of enough fresh water to go around. With many businesses now outputting more than ever, there’s never been a better time to ensure your wastewater treatment processes are in place, functional and the best they could be. It will save you money further reinforce the sustainability of your company. A recent study though has shown that it could soon also help boost a hugely significant component of our economy: fuel.

The folks at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign conducted a study recently and have found in their results that the fresh water used in quantities of millions of gallons at ethanol plants could potentially be replaced by treated wastewater. This remarkable discovery has led to some interesting speculation over the impact this could have on the cost of ethanol in the future!

Currently, an ethanol plant producing 50 million gallons a year would require a staggering 150 to 250 million gallons of water. This is naturally a significant and weighty drain on a precious resource and in reality, it is an unsustainable system. The report itself details the ins and outs of ‘using non-food cellulosic feedstock for fuel production’, citing some of its many advantages as lowering greenhouse gas emissions and alleviating some of the cost pressure on food markets among others.

Whilst the idea is still in its early stages and undoubtedly more research will be carried out to find out just how feasible such a movement would be, should we come up with a solution, it could be one of the most significant discoveries and changes to the economy in many years, relieving such a high-pressure consumption of water and replacing it with yet another reason why wastewater treatment is imperative.

Whether you’ve already got your wastewater processes in place, or are looking to make your business more ecological, the most practical, top quality treatment solutions are but a phone call away with us here at Environmental Screening and Separation.

Wastewater is an issue on all our minds at the moment, and with many stories coming over from The States involving those breaching regulations being met with hefty fines, and a constantly environmental push from Governmental bodies and organizations here in the UK, it’s no wonder that things are finally starting to change in a really big way. Whilst we here at Environmental Screening and Separation deliver comprehensive cleaning and separation solutions for companies up and down the country, Scottish Water have even bigger fish to fry as they take on the biggest wastewater development Glasgow has seen in a hundred years!

Of course, individual businesses absolutely must have their wastewater management systems in place, however how do you go about updating the infrastructure of an entire city? The answer is you inject a £250 million works program into the proceedings and set out plans for an overall waste improvement campaign that, upon completion, will change everything.

This particular system is designed to help the environmental conditions of the River Clyde improve significantly, whilst simultaneously controlling sewer flooding, something that has become a rising issue with recent heavier rainfall and the ever-present effects of climate change.

With safety valves installed on the River Clyde and its tributaries, wastewater will be kept under control during harsh weather conditions, whilst certain other improvements throughout the area will ensure excess surface water is removed from ‘pinch points’ quickly and safely.

Geoff Aitkenhead, asset management director at Scottish Water commented saying the investment will invigorate the wastewater competency of metropolitan Glasgow, priming it “fit for the 21st century, [it will] help protect the natural environment and meet the needs of growth and development.”

Here at ESS, we’re proud to be able to do our bit for businesses everywhere; ensuring that whilst Glasgow’s wastewater treatment will soon be at the cutting edge of modern eco-prosperity, the wastewater processes in your company can be just as good! Give us a call today to find out how we can help.

In a recent study by business information provider Visiongain, results show that wastewater treatment is set to hit a rise in 2013 after under-investment in the UK in comparison to other countries who are currently tackling their wastewater issues head on! There is, however, a solution available for you right now and as such, now is the time to act! With water quality standards always on the rise, there’s an ever increasing precedence placed on ensuring our water is as clean as possible, reducing the amount of wastewater the flows back into the system and causing potential harm. Seemingly it is the more economically developed countries that are currently suffering from this lack of attention in terms of the wastewater treatment sector, and it looks like things are about to change this year.

With treatment facilities choosing this year to upgrade to the latest, most effective equipment and many companies adopting a strict and thorough policy that ensures they are outputting as environmentally friendly and ecologically focussed as possible, 2013 is set to be the start of a huge drive toward cleaner water. The study itself covers a time space from 2013 right the way up to 2023, and through graphs and charts and other conclusive data, has analysed a significant spike and increase in wastewater over this time.

There’s no time like the present, and that statement is true of any environment-orientated process you are considering, however when it comes to wastewater treatment, now is most certainly the time to get involved. Get a policy and a system in place now and you’ll be able to reap the benefits when the increase in industry movement occurs, already having yours running like clockwork and ensuring your company is as green as can be! One less thing to worry about further down the line and one more accolade for your business!

Give us a call today, let us know your situation and we’ll tell you how we can help. With masses of experience in wastewater and many other environmental processes, we just might be able to help your premises function more economically than you ever imagined!

As Barnsley college offer up a free course in Environmental Awareness for managers and those in charge of Eco-equipment, ESS outline how they can help in 2013! Continue reading →

In what is reportedly the first of many such schemes, Barnsley College are offering 100 free places on a new Environmental Awareness Training course they are running in 2013! The aim is, of course, to increase awareness and give people who can really make a difference access to the genuine facts and figures, and to encourage them to think environmentally.

The course is a Level 3 Award and comes under the title Understanding the Fundamental Principles and Requirements of Environmental Technology Systems. It is directly aimed at those in management positions or those that work closely with environmental technologies and, whilst these people are likely already to know several important factors associated with environmental procedures, it aims to expand upon the basics and allow them to correctly advise customers and spread the word on the latest environment friendly technology.

From solar thermal hot water, a favourite of ours, to microcombined heat and power, with heat pumps, wind power, hydro power and many covered thoroughly, the range of people that would benefit from the training is truly staggering, and to be offering the information for free is also great!

Of course, wastewater plays a huge part in the environmental effects of any business, and as such, knowing how to deal with this appropriately, as well as the other economical attributes of your company is invaluable knowledge!

As we found out last week, the amount of wastewater output your business creates could invariably lead to problems further down the line if the quantity isn’t seen to be decreasing to an acceptable level. The easiest way to combat this is to gain a better understanding of how your company emits waste and then pick up the phone to us. We’re proud to be the wastewater treatment experts and no matter what state your output is in, we can help by streamlining, slimming and circumventing unnecessary waste on your site so as to provide you with a complete solution!

If you’re in the area, why not take up the offer of Barnsley College’s two day course and learn for free! Either way, we’re waiting to help you today!

This latest post from ESS shares the news story of the American turkey processing company saved by wastewater treatment!

We’re heading out across the pond for today’s snippet of news, as an Ohio turkey processing company looked certain to be headed toward financial doom or closure due to its environmentally damaging amounts of wastewater output.

Of course, at this time of year, business is absolutely booming, though that’s nothing out of the ordinary for the Kopp family, who have owned the company for a staggering 80 years, starting up in the humble 1930’s. As an integral component of their livelihoods, facing closure was simply an unbearable thought and something had to be done.

With nearly 145,000 gallons of wastewater produced every day, an environmental risk was palpable, and with the undeniably beautiful Whitewater River in close proximity to the facility, growing concerns shrouded the future of the company.

When all looked bleak though, Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences stepped up to the plate to come charging in for the rescue just in time. Since 2001, Dr Karen Mancl, environmental scientist and professor at aforementioned college, has been working on a wastewater treatment solution, and, after many years of scrupulous tests, rigorous experiments and meticulous studies involving no end of superfluous grad students and post-doctoral researchers, a bioreactor system was finally found to work.

After implementing, the company could stay alive and kicking, with millions of dollars saved in comparison to the alternative solutions, or worse, having to shut down entirely.

Pop in a Google search for the subject if you’d like to know more about the science behind the solution, but it’s safe to say that innovative wastewater treatment certainly saved the day in the States last month; so could a treatment process save your business money, streamline your eco-efficiency and help make Britain’s water and environmental compliance better? Call Environmental Screening and Separation today to find out!
