This one of their more easily accessible songs that is oft overlooked, I'm not sure why because it's certainly one of their best.

Easily one of the best Gorillaz remixes. Others not on this list worth a checking out are Junior Sanchez's take on DARE and the Stanton Warriors' mix of Feel Good Inc (both on D-Sides).

Up beat, danceable and extremely catchy - it's an undiscovered gem that would have made a great single.

The fact that half way through this song Damon Albarn starts sounding like Anne the mental from Little Britain (eh-eh-ehhh?) is slightly disturbing but that doesn't wreck the track too much.

For those who follow the Gorillaz mythology: Murdoc's middle name was originally Alphonce, but he changed it to Faust via deed poll when he made a pact with the Devil.

Serial remixers Hot Chip occasionally manage to completely re-imagine a track in a way you wish others did. There is not better example than this, like the Soluwax mix above, this adds that little bit extra.

After taking a little while to get going, Guillemots kick into gear an turn this into some rollicking gypsy pop/rock, replete with horns.

Hidden away as a b-side, which is a shame because it is one of their best songs.

This really should have been included on their first album. An absolutely killer tune that is loosely based around a chapter from the book "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov.

Sexy Boy (Air cover) - Franz Ferdinand, from Walk Away (single) (2005)
This along with the Serge Gainsbourg cover above, are their most successful. Although the covers of LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends and David Bowie's Sound And Vison are very good, and still worth hunting down.

This is a remix that divides fans of both Justice and Franz Ferdinand. The french duo cut it up, and add some funky beats to create a different track entirely

Slightly different to what you might expect from Franz Ferdinand. but it works and happens to have a fantastic bassline.

This is sung by Nick McCarthy which you may think changes everything, but not so, the song is great and holds to together very well.

No - Franz Ferdinand, from David Shrignley's Worried Noddles (2007)
An updated version of one of their b-sides called Brown Onions which was instrumental. This adds some words, but not many as most of them are 'No'.

Take Me Out (Naoum Gabo Re-version) - Franz Ferdinand, from Take Me Out (single) (2004)
Plenty of 'Take Me Out' remixes have been released by the likes of Daft Punk, Hot Chip and Morgan Geist. But this one by Naoum Gabo is by far the best.

Do You Want To (Max Tundra remix) - Franz Ferdinand, from The Fallen (single) (2006)
Again plenty of recognisable names brought in to do remixes, Erol Alkan, Max Tundra and Metronomy, in the end though the remix by Max Tundra shines the brightest making it even more funky than the original.

L. Wells - Franz Ferdinand, from The Fallen/L. Wells (2006)
Another very catchy tune that was for some reason left off the album. Hopefully one day they will rescue all of these amazing b-sides from the abyss, because it would make one heck of a compilation.

Fade Together (Avalanches remix) - Franz Ferdinand, from Eleanor Put Your Boots On (single) (2006)
This has been chilled to perfection. It has the vibe of an old jazz lp.

Aside from those tracks discussed above, the b-sides on their singles are often earlier version of there better known tracks. Which is a fantastic insight into the process their songs go through, but only worth checking out if your a die-hard fan. If you have really enjoyed the remixes above, then Ewan Pearson take on 'Outsiders', Headman's mix of 'Dark of the Matinée' and Lindstrom's version of 'I'm Your Villan' are also worth a listen, but aren't as good as the others discussed.

This is such an amazing tune, it is a track that deserved to be huge but in a way that I'm glad it didn't. John Cale (of The Velvet Underground) though this track was so good he included it in his 'Desert Island Discs' selections for the BBC in 2004

Leaders Of The Free World - Elbow, Leaders Of The Free World (2005)
As brilliant as the tune itself is, it's hard to ignore lyrics - an articulate and apt comment on world politics of the time. "the Leaders Of The Free World, are just little boys throwing stones","Passing the gun from father to feckless son."

Newborn - Elbow, Asleep In The Back (2001)
After the enormous rise and then slide of fellow Mancunians Oasis, 2001 presented a great opportunity to bands like Elbow, Doves and I Am Kloot to break into the mainstream and present a different side of the Manchester music scene. 'New Born' was the track that really let the world know Elbow had arrived, and although it didn't chart terribly well (UK #42) it paved the way for the subsequent Asleep In the Back/Coming Second double A side to crack the Top 20 (UK #19)

After 'Leaders Of The Free World' many (not me) thought Elbow had lost their reverence and would float into the abyss as a band that 'could've been'. This track to a large extent proved those people wrong, revealing to the world at in their 3 year absence they had written some of their best material yet.

Mirrorball - Elbow, The Seldom Seen Kid (2008)

Coming Second - Elbow, Asleep In The Back (2001)
A creepy song that plods along slowly, before opening up into this industrial epic that kicks and jarrs with each note. The Misery:Lab remix (from the ... single) turns this into a really chilled gothic tune you'd expect from Nine Inch Nails, which for Elbow sounds odd - but it actually works out great.

Snowball - Elbow, Help:A Day In The Life (2005)
Another politically motivated song, this time more specially about the Iraq War - the motivation and consequence

Grace Under Pressure - Elbow, Cast Of Thousands (2003)
For those unfamiliar with the story surrounding the track - the refrain sung by the audience during the band's set was recorded live at the Glastonbury Festival in 2002. This also provides the name for the album, 'Casts Of Thousands'. Audience members were subsequently asked to register online so as to receive credit in the album sleeve.

This is one of their most beautiful songs.

Teardrop (Massive Attack Cover) - Elbow, Not A Job (single) (2004)
Their covers really are fantastic and although may sound cliche - they do make them their own. This for me is a really interesting version, mainly and with a man signing it has a completely different vibe. Other fantastic covers are their take on Destiny Child's Independent Women which spawned a popular Internet animation, the version of Thunderclap Newman's Something in the Air (on the War Child & NME compilation 1Love) and John Lennon's Working Class Man are also worth hunting down.

A compelling tale of a couple withdrawing from drug addiction. A very real, and quite chilling song.

Whilst no the most successful, this probably their most popular track - thanks largely to its use in TV shows and games. The Phones remix that is on the Silent Alarm remixed album is worth checking out, as is Japanese experimental artists Cornelius' take which is on the Japanese version of Silent Alarm Remixed and Banquet EP.

Two More Years - Bloc Party, from Two More Years [EP] (2005)
Without doubt the most commercially accessible of all their songs.

The Prayer - Bloc Party, from A Weekend In The City (2007)
Apparently it was based on a Busta Rthymes song Kele heard, regardless it marked a change in their sound. Whilst it may have lost them some fans its chart success certainly established them as one of the biggest UK bands of the moment.

Produced by Ben Hiller, this is a really underrated track. Kele's voice is so crisp and the guitars have this really haunting feel to them.It would be great if they worked with Hiller again as this just sounds so different to the material they have done with Paul Epworth and Garret Lee.

She's Hearing Voices - Bloc Party, from Silent Alarm (2005)
Apparently after giving a demos of this to Alex Kapranos (frontman Franz Ferdinand) and Steve Lamacq (influential radio presenter) at a Franz Ferdinand gig, a buzz started that resulted in them being signed - or so the story goes.

The best version of one of their more subdued moments.

Easily the best Bloc Party cover you will come across.

Amazing and understated song about life and direction.

An achingly beautiful love song, that brings together the themes of 'A weekend in the city". This is played live with Gordon and Matt both playing drum kits, which is pretty impressive. But maybe not enough to impress those cynical fans that believe the drums are ripped off Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Maps'.

This really should have been included on an album or released as a single, its too good to be ignored. Everything about the track, especially the production says commercial hit. Many hardcore fans will tell you that its previous incarnation "Cells Shaped Like Stars" was a better, but if you listen to the live versions of that the lyrics seem too disjointed whereas in "We Were Lovers" they flow throughout. "Cells Shaped Like Stars" was recorded with Elliot James in early 2006, I don't think it will ever be released - but we live in hope.

This is a really strange track, unlike some of M83's more ambient moments, this track will have your attention for the entire 3 minute duration.

This is a modern masterpiece a truly engaging piece of work. The imagery that the lyrics create is haunting, yet beautiful - even if it is about prostitution. Morgan Kibby's vocals are what takes this track to the next level, her resembles 'Liz Fraser' from the 'Cocteau Twins' is uncanny.

If you have a playlist for running then this track needs to go right up the top, (Another good one is 'Dead Bodies' by 'Air') because it will gives you so much energy.

One of their glitcher moments, this a track is one that can be easily overlooked - but give it time and it will grow on you.

Kim & Jessie (Montag Remix) - M83, from Kim and Jesse (single) (2008)
Montag has done several remixes for M83, but this is easily his best. He slows down the tempo and adds this immensely catchy piano roll under the chorus. Also check out the 'Data' remix on the same single, it takes the track in a different direction altogether.

Run Into Flowers (Abstrackt Keal Agram Remix) - M83, from Run Into Flowers [EP] (2003)
'Abstrackt Keal Agram' are a French electro hip-hop group that used to be on fantastic french label Goom with M83 and Montag. Sadly both the band and the label no longer exist. This remixes is a prime example of how electronica can be infused with hip-hop.

This really does make you feel as though you are floating.

This is not liked by all M83's fans, because its is a very cheesy and a little 80's. Certainly, it lacks the intensity of tracks like 'America' and 'A Guitar And A Heart', but Up! has its own beauty and will attract a new fans in its own right. Morgan Kibbys vocals are again amazing.

Too Late - M83, from Saturdays=Youth (2008)
It is a wistful tale that you will inevitably get lost in as it takes you to a calm and peaceful place. This is simply mesmerising.

M83 have done some amazing remixes across their career, the highlights being their takes on Bloc Party's The Pioneers, Goldfrapp's Black Cherry and transformation of Midnight Juggernauts' Shadows. Also the remixes done for former Goom labelmates Kids Indestructible and Abstrackt Keal Agram are really worth hunting down.

COLDPLAY

All the problems people have with Coldplay can be solved very easily, no not by killing the band, but by turning the record over. As last years vinyl singles collection proved the b-sides are nearly always better than the a-side. Before you get to the playlist though, there is something you need to do. Pretend that Clocks, Speed Of Sound and Talk do not exist. This will inevitably involve ignoring the fact that Clocks sounds just like Speed of Sound and that Fix You is very similar to The Scientist. If it at all helps try to think of them as songs by some other band called Hotstop. Doing this will take you back to when you first heard Yellow, went and bought Parachutes and fell in love with very simple, relaxed and beautiful songs.So here is your guide to listening and appreciating Coldplay.

THE ESSENTIAL

Don't Panic (EP Version) - Coldplay, from The Blue Room [EP] (1999)
As good as the album version is, it doesn't come close to this. Chris's vocals are much more relaxed, which creates a better atmosphere throughout the track.

Careful Where You Stand - Coldplay, from Shiver (single) (2000)
An undiscovered gem, easily one of their best works.

See You Soon - Coldplay, from The Blue Room [EP] (1999)

Yellow - Coldplay, from Parachutes (2000)

Viva La Vida - Coldplay, from Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008)
Finally they release a pop song that is not stuck in the Clocks formula, the lyrics here do however leave much to be desired.

Their first attempt of channelling shoegaze. This is the type of material they need to go back if they want to rebuild their reputation critically.

Spies - Coldplay, from Parachutes (2000)
One of the few songs where the lyrics have been actually crafted, the imagery of 'spies' coming out of the water makes for a haunting, yet beautiful, track. This song caused Parachutes to be banned in China, due to some misguided belief that the lyrics were about anti-communism.

Amsterdam - Coldplay, from A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002)
Straying away from their usual song structure this epic track builds and builds before finally exploding. This track is one that is often overlooked, if you have never heard this it may just change the way you think about Coldplay.

Life In Technicolor - Coldplay, from Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008)
Even though most of the track relies on a a sample (provided by their friend Jon Hopkins) it is hopefully a indication of their supposed 'new direction'.

Brian Eno has taken the band towards the classic early 90's shoegazer sound, this track incorporates the best of MBV and Slowdive. This appears on the album as half of track 5, as part of their whole two songs per track idea - don't that again, Chris if you can't make up your mind what number you want it then leave it off altogether.

You'll notice that this is the only track from the X&Y era to appear on this list. The reason for this is that, unlike the majority of the over-produced tracks from this era, 'Sleeping Sun' is kept very simple in the same way 'See You Soon' was on 'The Blue Room EP'. The over-produced tracks I'm referring to are those produced by Danton Supple(U2,Starsailor), the three tracks by Ken Nelson (who did Parachutes and most of A Rush Of Blood To The Head) White Shadows, Fix You, Twisted Logic are actually not too bad, though they aren't in the same league as other tracks mentioned here. Overall though X&Y era material is only worth seeking out if you were one of the few who liked U2's Pop, because it is very similar.

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (feat. The Daptone Horns) - Mark Ronson, from Version (2007)
This interpretation gives much needed life to an otherwise lacklustre and uneventful track.

Mixing afro-beat stylings into their standard pop song structure works to great effect, and provides much needed variety.

An undiscovered gem that is one of the most emotive tracks you could stumble across.

Black Refuge - Junip, from Black Refuge [EP] (2005)
Junip was formed in 1997 by Gonzalez and two other Swedish blokes, after playing in mostly punk and hardcore bands they decided to do something completely different with guitars, moogs and drums. Still no album and largely inactive since Gonzalez became famous in his own right. This track will surprise most, because of the full band backing, but his voice fits it perfectly. If there were any need for evidence of this guys genius then this track is it.

Futures - Zero 7, from The Garden (2006)
This is one of 4 tracks Gonzalez contributed to the last Zero 7 album, the other tracks being done with their long-time collaborator Sia. It was released as a single, and its not hard to see why.

Send Someone Away (Featuring José González) - Embee, from Tellings From Solitaria
He re-recorded this 3 years later as "Time To Send Someone Away" for his second album (In Our Nature), but it fails to live up to the original Hip-Hop collaboration.

Smalltown Boy (Bronski Beat cover) - José González,
Jose Gonzalez has a knack of doing good cover versions. From the Boss (Born to Run) to Massive Attack (Teardrop) to Kylie (Hand on Your Heart), as well as the other two in this list. The secret seems to lie in the fact that his choices seem so unlikely, yet they work so incredibly well, this is no exception.

HC - Junip, from Straight Lines (7") (2000)
This track is what makes Jose Gonzalez so good. He manages to give a song that seems so plain and sombre, an enormous amount of power. Taken from the original (really hard to find} 7", apparently recently re-released as an exclusive Itunes EP.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover) - José González, from Remain [EP]
Manages to do possibly the best cover version, of one of the most covered songs of all-time, this is Jose Gonzalez at his best. A close second would be the Calexico version which speeds the Joy Divison original up slightly to great effect.

Crosses - Zero 7, from The Garden (2006)
In one of many his collaborations with Zero 7 he completely transforms his acoustic original into some down-tempo danceable funk.

Cycling Trivialities - José González, from In Our Nature (2007)
One of the stand out tracks on his last album.

This is the track, for me, which distinguishes them from the constant comparisons to Interpol and Joy Division that they receive. If you have never heard anything by 'Editors' before then I recommend this as a good starting point, it has so mush energy throughout and is really hard to dislike.

This was their first single to crack the UK Top 10.

In my opinion this is the best track that they have released to date. The lyrics are melancholic and beautiful, "These dark pubs we drink in, somehow light up when I'm with you", which fit perfectly as the track pulses along before slowly dragging you into a sudden maelstrom.

Irresistible cover. Their covers of R.E.M's Orange Crush and The Cure's Lullaby are equally brilliant.

This songs centers around a seriously catchy guitar riff, that is sure to get stuck in your head.

Could be excused for thinking it was a track from 'The Presets' as it has the hallmarks of all their hits. It is undeniably fun, but the howling does begin to grate after a while.

Divine (Midnight Juggernauts Remix) - Sebastien Tellier, from Divine (single)(2008)
Another quality remix that gained a lot of radio airplay around the time of Eurovison 2008 (The original was France's entry).

Devil Within - Midnight Juggernauts, from Secrets of the Universe [EP] (2006)
The Presets remix of this track on the same EP is also worth a look.
