Here is my photo story entitled "Look at me".
Give me your thought related to Climate Change!

First of all, I want to say about what my story is. My photo story entitled “Look at me”. This photo story is shown about the daily life of OKrasa residents who live based on fishery. Their lives are relied on the weather, sea water level and Koang Kang forest. If the weather, sea water level and Koang Kang forest change, their lives also change. I also want to pick up other angle where most of people do not often mention about. Some just focus on fishing along Mekong River and what going on with people along river but they nearly totally forget lives of people living along the sea. What have been going with young boys or girls are living at Okrasa; what they are living for; just for fishing or nothing. I strong hope my photo story “Look at me” will urge you to understand what people living along the sea. I hope you can find a good solution for them or for us. My photo story also can share a small angle of life to you.

This Koang Kang forest located in Kep province. This forest is sheltered for sea fish. Right now, Koang Kang forest has been observed by one community in Kep called Chhne Ksach community.

Sothy, one of fishermen living at Okrosa village of Kep province, is preparing his boat and net before going to catching fish in the sea. Okrosa village is the biggest fishing village in Kep province.

Buntheuon, Phon, Nen, Mali, and Men are releasing fish and crabs after catching in the sea for over night. There are two groups of fishing; group one is going to catch from 2pm till 8am and group two is go to catch from 3am till 3pm.

The orphaned, Phon, 15-year-old, is living with Buntheuon in order to help catching fish in the sea. Phon always cleans up nets after coming back from the sea.

R: ខណៈពេលកំពុង ដាក់ជី សណ្ដែកគួរ អ្នកមីង មុំ ក្នុងវ័យ៤៥ឆ្នាំ ជាម្ចាស់ចំការសណ្ដែកគួរស្ថិតក្នុងភូមិ បឹងបាសាក់ បានឲ្យដឹងថា អ្នកមីងប្រកបរបរនេះជិត១០ឆ្នាំហើយ។ បើនិយាយពីសណ្ដែកដែលកំពុងបេះនេះ មានអាយុកាលប្រមាណជាង១ខែ បើគិត តាងពីថ្ងៃដាំមក។ ឆ្លៀតពេលចូកជីដាក់ សណ្ដែកគួរ បន្តិច ឆ្លៀតមកបង្ហើបឲ្យដឹងថា៖

Ratanakiri development

Development is not supposed to develop only in urban areas but also in remote site. For this context, Ratanakiri province is also one among those rural ones. Right now, infrastructure is going to be well organized, for instance, new road from Ratanakiri has been building up.

What will be changed after any infrastructure systems have been growing up in rural site step by step? And what will youths be able to get from this changing?

Heak Bros, in age of 30, seller at Boeung Yark Loam lake, said that road of Ratanakiri since has been rehabilitated, more tourists also come. “60% is local and 40% is international tourists.”

Sok Sothearith, 22, actually he is from Kampong Cham province but he has come work in Ratanakiri for six years, said clean water and electricity system there is not the problem, which is available, so focusing point on is road and now we have new traffic road; it will be good for students there. Though it is a bit dust, that road gonna be fine then.

Heak Bros also mentioned that both positive and negative impact of modernization in rural area. He said it will be a bit changing for youths because though this province can get more tourists, youths there just get various jobs such as seller or service providers. For educational benefit, he is not hopeful yet.

Regardless with Nget Pitou, Director of Tourism Department at Ratanakiri, Ratanakiri province is eco-tourism among East North 4 provinces in our Kingdom. “After building up new National road number 78 from Opong Mon to Balung, provincial of Ratanakiri, 300 000 tourists are estimated to increase by 2015.”

Pitou also claimed that more students are tended to study Tourism in their major. He accepted that it is hard to say about rate of students growing up. What he knows is that most of tourism benefit will reach directly to community, so more or less, youths must be gotten.

Chan Kham Khuer, Director of Education department in Ratanakiri, said that rate of dropping school of students are reducing after establishing more high schools in remote districts. Before, there were only 2 high schools but now 5 high schools have been processing.

She accepted that the problem is just for students after high schools because it is only one university in Ratanakiri provincial town and the problem department of education Youths and Sport cannot response properly. Therefore, rich students can pursue their degree but the indigent ones still find jobs in their community.

Chan Ngok, in age of 26, is a minority guy (Kreng Ethnic Groups). Ratanakiri is his motherland, is living and studying in Phnom Penh. He is Medical student year 6^th at Universite des science de la sante du cambodge says “Youths seem unwilling to participate in both social activities and Non-government organizations.”

Medical student, Chan Ngok, explained more that to encourage countryside youths to participate willingly, community should explain to youths what benefit they will get from rural development.

“Youths have to get something new being able to build up their community and families. Mainly, youths have to be well educated and know what their future goal obviously and also something related to land conflict, forest destruction, and political issue.” Chan Ngok says.

Ngok ensured that after getting graduated, he will step back to his motherland in order to develop his community. Anyways, he has to be ready for this step “I have to be well prepared both living condition and stereotype. Political issue also has to be concerned. I also find fund to develop there.”

Chan Ngok also assisted that though right now Ratanakiri has well done in infrastructure system, still government has to harden social service and eliminate corruption in public school or other institutions, as the result, youths will get transparently developing society.

ទន្ទឹមនិងនេះ ការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍ មិនមែនសំដៅរកការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍តែនៅទីប្រជុំជននោះទេ គឺក៏មានអភិវឌ្ឍន៍នៅ តាមតំបន់ដាច់ស្រយាលផងដែរ។ក្នុងបរិបទនេះ យើងត្រូវពិនិត្យមើលបណ្ដាខេត្តឆ្ងាយៗដូចជា ខេត្តរតនៈគីរីជាដើម ហើយថ្មីៗនេះ កំណត់ផ្លូវថ្មីស្រលាងមួយខ្សែរត្រូវបានសាងសង់មកដល់ខេត្តភាគឥសាន្តមួយនេះ ។

តើនឹងមានអ្វីផ្លាស់ប្ដូបន្ទាប់ពីប្រព្ធ័នហេដ្ឋារចនាសម្ព័ន្ធក្នុងតំបន់ដាច់ស្រយាលបានកំពុងរីកចំរើនបន្តិចម្ដងៗ?តើយុវវ័យនៅ ទីនោះនឹងអាចទទួលបានអ្វីពីការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍បែបនេះ?

លោក ពិទូបានមានប្រសាសន៍បន្តថាចំនួនសិស្សនិងនិសិត្សដែលចង់រៀនមុខវិជ្ជាទេសចរណ៍បានកើនឡើង ប៉ុន្តែលោកក៏ទទួលស្គាល់ដែរថាវាជារឿងពិបាកដែលនិយាយថាអត្រាចំនួនសិស្សមុខជំនាញផ្សេងទៀតកើនឡើងដែរ។ លោកគ្រាន់តែបញ្ជាក់ថា អ្វីដែលលោកបានដឹងគឺផលប្រយោជន៍ភាគច្រើនដែលបានមកពីវិស័យទេសចរណ៍គឺបានធ្លាក់ទៅដល់ប្រជាជនក្នុងសហគមន៍ផ្ទាល់ ដូច្នេះតិចរឺច្រើន យុវជនយើងនឹងបានទទួល។

អ្នកស្រី ចាន់ ខាំឃឿ ប្រធានមន្ទីអប់រំ យុវជន និង កីឡាខេត្តរតនៈគីរីបានមានប្រសាសន៍ថា អត្រាបង់បោះការសិក្សាក្នុងខេត្តរតនៈគីរីត្រូវបានកាត់បន្ថយបើប្រៀបធៀបទៅនិងឆ្នាំមុនៗពីព្រោះមន្ទីបានពង្រីកវិទ្យាល័យទៅកាន់ស្រុកឆ្ងាយៗដូចជា អូយ៉ាដាវ បរកែវ និង អណ្ដូងមាសជាដើម។កាលពីមុន ខេត្តនេះមានតែវិទ្យាល័យចំនួន២តែប៉ុណ្ណោះ តែបច្ចុប្បន្នវិទ្យាល័យចំនួន៥បានកំពុងដំណើរការ។

អ្នកស្រីក៏បានទទួលស្គាល់ផងដែរថា បញ្ហាធំគឺសិស្សដែលបានបញ្ចប់ការសិក្សាពីវិទ្យាល័យ ពីព្រោះខេត្តនេះមានសាកលវិទ្យាល័យតែមួយ ហើយមុខជំនាញក៏មិនមានច្រើនដែរ ដូច្នេះសិស្សដែលមានលទ្ធភាព ពួកគេបន្តការសិក្សាក្នុងទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញ ប៉ុន្តែសិស្សមានជីវភាពខ្សត់ខ្សោយ អាចត្រឹមតែរកការងារធ្វើតាមសហគមន៍ពួកគេប៉ុណ្ណោះ។ បញ្ហានេះ មន្ទីអប់រំមិនទាន់អាចឆ្លើយតបបាននៅឡើយទេ។

លោក ចាន់ ង៉ុកអាយុ២៦ឆ្នាំ ជាជនជាតិ ក្រិង មានស្រុកកំណើតក្នុងខេត្តរតនៈគីរី តែលោកបានបន្តការសិក្សានិងរស់នៅទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញ។ លោកជានិសិត្សពេទ្យឆ្នាំទី៦ នៃសាកលវិទ្យាល័យសុខាភិបាល បានឲ្យដឹងថាការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍នៅតំបន់នេះ យុវជនហាក់បីដូចនៅមិនទាន់មានការចូលរួមអ្វី មួយជាដុំកំភួននោះទេ ទោះបីជាមានអង្គការ ក្រៅរដ្ឋាភិបាល រឺជាតិក្តី ។និសិត្សពេទ្យរូបនេះបានបន្តទៀតថា នៅទីនេះ វាតែងតែ មានបព្ហាខ្លះៗដែលទាក់ទិន និងការរស់នៅ សុវត្តិភាពសន្តិសុខជូនប្រជាពលរដ្ឋ ព្រមទាំងសេវ៉ាសង្គម។វាមិនខុសពីស្ថានភាពនៅតំបន់ផ្សេងៗទេ ។

លោកង៉ុកបាននិយាយបន្តថា ដូចនេះ ចំនុចដែរសំខាន់នៅសហគមន៍នេះ ត្រូវធ្វើយ៉ាងណាឲ្យ ពួកគេ បានយល់ពីសារប្រយោជន៍ នៃការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍ យ៉ាងដូចម្តេច? ជំរុញឲ្យពួកគេរៀនទទួលពីអ្វីដែលថ្មីៗ ដែលជាការរីកចំរើនដល់សហគមន៌គេ និង គ្រួសារជាបព្ហាចំាបាច់បំផុត។ជាពិសេសនេះ ឲ្យពួកគេ រៀនសូត្រ និងដឹងពីជោគវាសនាអនាគតពួកគេ ចំពោះការអប់រំ បព្ហាដីធ្លី បព្ហាព្រៃឈើ បព្ហានយោបាយខ្លះៗផងដែរ។

និសិត្សពេទ្យជនជាតិភាគតិចរូបនេះបានអះអាងថា បន្ទាប់ពីបញ្ចប់ការសិក្សាផ្នែកសុខាភិបាល លោកនឹងត្រលប់ទៅអភិវឌ្ឍន៍សហគមន៍របស់លោកវិញ តែលោកត្រូវតែត្រៀមខ្លួនទុកជាមុនដូចជា «យើងត្រូវរៀបចំបរិបទរស់នៅ ផ្នត់គំនិត។ ផ្នែកនយោបាយ ក៏ជាផ្នែកមួយដែលយើងត្រូវពង្រឹកផងដែរ។ខ្ញុំនិងព្យាយាមរកមូនិធិដើម្បីអភិវឌ្ឍសហគមន៍ខ្ញុំ»។

លោក ចាន់ ង៉ុកបានបន្តថា ស្របនិងការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍ហេដ្ឋារចនាសម្ព័ន្ធស្អាត លោកក៏សូមឲ្យ រដ្ឋាភិបាល ត្រូវពង្រឹងនូវសេវ៉ាសង្គមជាចាំបាច់ បព្ហាពុករលួយតាមសាលារៀន ក៏ដូចជាស្ថាប័នរដ្ឋផ្សេងៗផងដែរ សេវ៉ាពេទ្យ និងសេវ៉ាសាធារណផ្សេងៗទៀត ជាបព្ហាដ៏ក្តៅកគុក ហើយនេះជាវិធីដើម្បី ឲ្យយុវជនបានទទួលនូវតម្តាភាពការអភិវឌ្ឍន៍ ឲ្យបានសមតុល្យក្នុងសង្គម។

It is not weird to hear that there was a car accident at that place or there was motto crashed at this place. Likely, 4.7 people are fatalities injured every day because of traffic accidence.

According to Annul Report 2010 of Handicap international Belgium, in general, fatalities in 2010 had a similar pattern in term of age categories as in 2009. The average age of fatalities was 32 years old. The peak of fatalities was between 20 to 24 years old. Compared to 2009, this age group increased by 7%.

Additionally, among driver fatalities, high proportions of drivers of motorbikes, 46%, passengers’ vehicles, 38%, good vehicles, 33% and agricultural vehicles, 46%, were between 20 to 29 years old. Around 30% of vehicles drivers aged 5 to 19 years old and other 32% were older than 54 years old.

Sem Panhavuth, Road Crash and Victim Information Manager of Handicap International Belgium, also explained that most the dead, their heads were crashed down because youth do not want to wear helmet or obey the traffic law or sign.

So far, there are many car driving schools opened and waited for people to study driving. Regardless with Yellow Pages of Cambodia, there are 44 listing of driving schools and instructors but we do not k now how many more are out of this website.

On the contrary, we still see more traffic accident occur almost everywhere. Oung Sovannary, junior at International Languages Institute, said that she always surfs internet to get more traffic information in order to protest her self. “Not only good resident but also good driver, I can protest my life from bad fortunate occurred by traffic accident”

Unlikely, her friends seem not to pay their attention on this issue. “It is not good at all for my friends who do not care about traffic signs or traffic education. They seem not care about their life.” She says.

Sambath Dany, a receptionist at the 23 October Driving School in Phnom Penh, told The post since May 2011, that she is not aware of corruption or bribery being used to get driving license at the school. "There is no copying and cheating during the exam because there are many cameras in exam rooms." She added that her school is now offering traffic laws free to public from Monday to Friday to raise their awareness and help people avoid accidents.

Similarly, Phim Sokhorm, who works as traffic policeman, also told The post on May 2011 that people do not respect the traffic laws partly due to a weak understanding of what they are. He continued that people who buy a license might be able to get form place to place, but they don’t know the meaning of the signs and lights, so perhaps they don’t violate the law intentionally. "I not only fine them but also educate them on traffic laws," he said about how he deals with offenders.

In addition, most of fatalities injured, 81%, occurred by male from age 20 to 24 years old, regarding to Sem Panhavuth, “I think if youth or any people wear helmet correctly, they will not face such kind of problem but they care about their hair style more than their life.”

Princess Sisowath Keo Soma Tharirakka and Khmer singer Chorm Bun Yong will tie the knot in January following an engagement that shocked the Kingdom’s Royal Family.

The Princess said her engagement with Chorm Bun Yong came as a surprise to the Royal family because he was a commoner.

The local singer proposed to the Princess on October 18 this year.

“Some people in my family were not happy with my decision. It is discrimination against a social class. My grandmother, however, wanted me to make my own choice. She is a kind woman and wanted what was best for me,” said the Princess.

The couple met by chance at a restaurant in Phnom Penh, when a mutual friend introduced them. To Chorm Bun Yong’s pleasant surprise, the Princess was kind to him and they became friends. His family was just as surprised at the engagement as the Royal Family.

“My parents and siblings could not believe that I was going to marry the Princess,” he said.

Chorm Bun Yung will pay the Princess $37,777 as a wedding dowry.

The wedding will be celebrated over three days at the Princess's house in Borey Thmey, Phnom Penh, from January 17 to 19 next year. The wedding reception will be held at the Le Royal Hotel.

“I want to maintain order, so I will make my wedding traditional in the style of the King,” she said.

The Princess’s uncle will stand in the place of her father – Prince Sisowath Dungsaravoin – who died when she was young. The couple plans to invite around 700 local and foreign friends and family, including some of Chorm Bun Yong’s military friends. They will spend their honeymoon in India and Nepal.

After the wedding, Princess Sisowath Keo Soma Tharirakka wants Chorm Bun Yung to continue his singing career.

“I do not want him quit singing because of me,” she said.

Chorm Bun Yong said “To maintain our love, we need to learn to forgive each other and to never look down on one another.”

ARMED with incense and an iron bar, Kong Kia – aka Kun Bunta aka White Bow – has a fearsome reputation for being immune to heat and using hot metal to perform miracle healing. On House Number 11, he demonstrated his ability and told his story.

Kong Kia said it all started when he was hit by a magic spell at the young age of 10. Though born in Treang, Takeo province, he moved to Kompong Cham province where he trained as a monk for five years.

“When I was a monk, I was a novice. I always spoke the truth; I have never looked down on someone and told a lie, because that would put me in trouble," he said.

But Kong Kia gave up the life of a Buddhist monk, and began studying magic at Kolean mountain and Preah mountain, in Kompong Speu province. With this education, he started treating the sick in Kompong Cham.

To cure pain and disease, Kong Kia has an elaborate ritual. He heats his iron bar over a fire and touches his palms and feet to it, before resting them on the patient.

For an able-bodied person, taking a swim is nothing out of the ordinary, but for Sam Pheng, who is missing both of his legs from just below the knee, his aquatic abilities are something quite remarkable.

Confined daily to a wheelchair, Sam Pheng, 46, does not let his disability hamper his spirits, nor weaken his determination to push his body to its limits.

Residing today in Preak Anhanh village, Preak Anhanh commune in the Mok Kompol district of Kandal province, Sam Pheng in 1988 joined the Cambodian military in the Svay Sisophon district of Battambang province. After just three months of service, he and his military garrison were sent to patrol an area near the Thai-Cambodia border. It was the mission that changed his life forever as he and his fellow soldiers fell victim to a cluster of landmines, resulting in the loss of both his legs.

“At that time, there were two other soldiers patrolling with me. One of the others lost his hand and both my legs were broken apart below my knees. In short, all of us were injured,” he said, still clearly emotional at the memory.

Due to Sam Pheng’s injuries being sustained while part of the military, he was offered rehabilitation to help him adjust to life in a wheelchair; how to manoeuvre it, how to get himself out of it. It was during this time that Sam Pheng recognised that he took to this setback in a way other injured soldiers around him couldn’t. While the other soldiers stuck with simply going about their business, Sam Pheng discovered he had the strength and energy to perform impressive tricks, both in and out of his wheelchair.

On the day The Post met Sam Pheng in his village, he was racing about in his wheelchair, balancing only on its back wheels, and with a teenage friend teetering, eyes squeezed shut, on his lap.
Puffing after the stunt, Sam Pheng said with a proud smile: “Taking off in my crippled cart, it is not so hard because of my energy. I can hold this cart up easily.”

So in-tune is Sam Pheng with his wheelchair that he won first prize in a 1997 cart racing competition.

Along with his speed-based skills, Sam Pheng can also swim significant distances and perform underwater tasks.

The Post looked on as he easily swam at least 40 metres before duck-diving beneath the surface of the lake to untie a tangled net.

“The disabled who lose both legs are hardly ever to be able to swim,” explains Sam Pheng. “As I trained though, I discovered that I can swim 150 metres without taking a break at all.”

Sam Pheng says that one day he’d like to take his swimming to the next level and compete in national competitions, but as yet has not had the opportunity.

Although Sam Pheng shows inspiring perseverance and a genuine zest for adventure, his life hasn’t always been so full. His parents were both murdered during the Khmer Rouge regime and he says that due to his disability, he never had the opportunity to find a partner and marry. Today, he says he relies on the generosity of villagers to get by on a daily basis.

“I normally move back and forth. Occasionally, I go to reside near the Cambodian-Thai frontier and sometimes I move back to live at Preak Anhanh,” he says, adding that much work is needed to be done by the government to ensure that injured soldiers are able to achieve a quality standard of living.

“I purely hope our government will think about us,” he says.

AT 6: 30am, Srel Sreng, 30, has to show up at Mary Knoll so that she can prepare breakfast for small kids. She told me that she thinks of the kids as her own children.

Sreng, who has worked for Mary Knoll for 5 years, is responsible for taking care of small kids infected with HIV. These children have been adopted from various communities by Mary Knoll.

When I arrived around 8:30 a.m., I saw Sreng preparing lunch for the small kids. She chit-chatted with me while she chopped chicken that was leftover from dinner the night before. She revealed that she has to give the small children HIV treatment pills in the morning and evening before she leaves at 6:30pm.

She said that Marry Knoll is divided into 7 houses, each of which can contain around 12 children or less than this based on how big the house is. Her place houses 12 children ranging in age from 7 to 15 years old.

Sreng also told me that normally on Saturday and Sunday, both Khmer and foreign Mary Knoll workers visit the little kids in her house. However, when I arrived on Sunday, I did not see anyone visiting. I just saw the kids chatting with each other and sometimes watching TV. She said she did not know why they did not come that day.

It is quite hard to look after small kids infected with HIV because they get depressed easily and they argue and fight with one another often. But Sreng still wears a smiling face. She said that besides her, Mary Knoll has 4 staffers who work in the house – 3 people work in the morning and 1 works in the evening.

She told me that when children get depressed, she tries to console them. If it’s serious, she informs the director of Mary Knoll to talk with them one more time.

“Though I talk to them about what makes them feel upset, I have to inform the director because I am afraid if they get down more and more, I need to protect them.”

In case those children get sick, Sreng has to play the role of their second mother and send them to the hospital.

LOVE” is a universal concept that causes some people go to extraordinary measures.

Sok Sopheaktra says she got married five years ago without gaining permission from her parents. Because of her love for her husband, she was willing to do anything to be with him.

“My husband and I loved each other so much, even though we had known each other for only a month,’’ she explains.

“He told his parents to ask for me in marriage, but my parents said our horoscopes weren’t compatible, so they didn’t want us to get married.

“That’s why we decided to run away, so we could get married.”

Im Borin, a 54-year-old fortune teller and almanac writer, says: “Knowing the horoscopes of a couple is important.”

He says a couple can be well educated and wealthy, but if their signs don’t match, they will not be happy together. He also says he mainly talks only to parents.

“Young customers hardly come to my place; mostly it’s parents. They ask for their kids’ horoscopes to see whether or not the couple will be happy together and get on well with each other in the future.”

Tit Lida, a 23-year-old junior at the Institute of Foreign Languages, says she got married four months ago.

When she married, however, she did not even know her husband; it was arranged because her parents believed in their horoscopes.

“My parents went to a fortune teller who told them that my husband and I would live happily.”

Somchan Sovandara, deputy head of the department of psychology at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, says “love” is indefinable, but horoscopes can be helpful: “Horoscopes is the norm we should follow.”

Sok Sam Oeun, executive director of the Cambodian Defenders Project, says it’s a person’s right to choose his or her own partner.

All he can do is tell couples about the obstacles they may face if they opt for the wrong partner.

“In Buddhism, the religious way is to avoid problems, but sometimes that’s hard. I just tell my children, and then it is up to them.” Pa Sothona, a 23-year-old who works in sales and marketing at Phummon Khmer Travel and Tours, does not have a girlfriend right now, but he agrees with Sok Sam Oeun that people should be able to choose their partners without interference from their parents.

“This is the 21st century. We have the right to choose our own partners. It’s not like ancient society, and parents should trust their children.”

Pa Sothana believes people’s horoscopes are too fatalist.

“Our horoscope assumes we are predestined for a particular path, but it doesn’t take into account the fact that we have free will, and we can create our own path,” he says.

Heng Chhorda, a 20-year-old freshman at Norton University, doesn’t really believe in horoscopes either. “Happiness doesn’t happen because of our sign,” she says.

Instead, she believes philosophical books offer a better understanding of true happiness. “I think that if everyone read these types of books, fewer people would get hurt or suffer. Most of these books don’t talk about astrology or horoscopes.”

Tit Lida also suggests that parents and children should try to understand each other more when it comes to marriage.

That way, hopefully they can reach a compromise, she says.

Even if a couple’s signs are compatible, parents should let their children decide whether they will be happy together, Tit Lida says.

AN exercise revolution is occurring among Cambodia’s youth, with the nation’s young people enduring intense workouts in the pursuit of fitness and beauty.

Ann Vichdy, a grade 12 student, said she usually comes to the Phnom Penh Sports Club gym to get toned and stay healthy.

She said she is not satisfied with her level of fitness yet, since she’s only been going for five days. It’s easier and takes less time than jogging along the road, she added. Using an exercise machine at the gym makes her feel more accomplished.

“I exercise using a variety of machines. Sometimes I go swimming, but that can make my skin look darker so I pair that with a respite in the sauna room. Afterwards, my body looks good,” she said.

So Kundan, administrative manager for the Phnom Penh Sports Club, said that young people mostly come to exercise between 6 and 7 pm, especially on weekends.

“The patrons at my club are 80% Cambodian, and about half are young people. Men and women come in about equal numbers,” he said.

Kundan has tailored his gym to the youth market, providing machines that help to slim body fat and tone muscle.

“Most men exercise with the aim of making their bodies look stronger and more muscular, while women typically swim to improve their skin,” he continued.

According to Dy Dynarin, the 37-year-old owner to the King Kong Fitness Club in Tuol Kork commune, youth can begin exercising their muscles at age 15, but that starting earlier can have a negative effect on normal muscle development.

“On the whole, male customers are interested in muscle exercises that can get them in good shape. They’re going for the fit film star look, not the overly-muscular wrestler look,” he explained.

Kundan advised youth who want to get in shape to eat regularly and maintain a good balance of nutrients. If they eat too much, it will be harder for them to lose weight and gain muscle.

Chhoun Try, deputy director of the Department of Psychology at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, that youth can derive both physical health and mental confidence from exercise.

LIFE seems like an endless battle to find enough money to live for 42-year-old former soldier Mao Sokong, whose hands were blown off by a landmine.

As a young man during the civil war, he volunteered as a soldier and after military training, was sent to serve at Phnom Oral in Pursat province near the Thai border.

But one evening he was on patrol with about six of his colleagues when he stepped on a landmine, which blew his hands off, blinded one eye and left him with serious scarring.

His comrades were luckier – they escaped with only minor injuries, but Mao Sokong had to spend more than a year in hospital, recovering from the blast.

“Only my mother was around to take care of me in hospital – we had no money to live on,” recalls Mao Sokong.

After he was discharged from hospital, he and his mother were reduced to begging for a living by the side of the road.

“His condition was dramatically bad at that time,” says his wife Sorn Sok, who took pity on him despite his injuries because she had known him as an ordinary young man before the war.

She decided to marry him, and Mao Sokong managed to keep the family together by living under a house in Boeung Tompun commune in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district. The couple had three children, and to make money, he managed to use his arms to cast nets to catch fish.

“But the number of fish declined and I couldn’t catch any more. Someone even stole my fishing nets, so I had to sell both my boats to pay back the owner of the fishing nets,” Mao Sokong says.

Now, he says, times are tough. “My wife has to pick up some vegetables along the street to sell at the market, since we don’t have enough money to buy vegetables from others,” he explains.

Some days, his wife Sorn Sok manages to bring home 8,000 riel a day (US$2), although other days the family nets only 4,000 riel after she buys food and pays school fees for their youngest daughter, who is aged 11 and studying at primary school.

However, Mao Sokong prefers to look on the bright side of life, pointing out that he’s eligible for 30 kilogrammes of free rice each month through a foreign NGO.

His military pension of 100,000 riel a month also helps – as do his two older children, who work to help out the family. “Maybe they will have a better life when they get married,” says the old soldier with a smile.

“If your phone shuts down automatically, I’ll have to install a new programme. Otherwise, your phone won’t work any more and you’ll need to go to the phone repair shop.” These are words commonly heard coming from phone-programme installer Seng Sopeak. Seng Sopeak sits in a row of six others, monitoring a phone programme installation program on his laptop. A stack of mobile phones sits next to each of the technicians, all waiting to have new programmes installed.

Seng Sopeak has spent the past two months working as a programme installer at Khlang Msay market, the premier source for mobile phones of all prices, as well as repair and program installation services.

In front of his desk, I saw a lot of devices. Seng Sopeak explained that they are used to connect mobile phones to his laptop in order to install programmes. But not all phones can connect using the same device, and he has different types for all sorts of phones.

When I showed up, Sopeak was busy changing the code number on a phone, allowing the phone to accept any SIM card, regardless of the number.

Having been in the job only two months, Sopeak is still learning. “If I cannot switch up that mobile phone, I’ll have to hand it to other installers, as I’ve worked for only a short time. I’m not so qualified yet,” he admitted.

Sopeak installs programmes not just for Chinese mobile phones, but for all types. Glancing at his laptop screen, I saw install-ation software for BlackBerry, Nokia and more. Sopeak took about five minutes to install the programme, and a minute to change the phone’s code number.

It all looks mighty complicated, but Sopeak seems to understand it pretty well.

ឆ្លើយតបទៅនឹងសំណួររបស់អ្នកសារព័ត៌មាន ទាក់ទិនទៅនឹងអ្វីដែលលោក ខៀវ សំផន និយាយនៅក្នុងសាល សវនាការ សហព្រះរាជអាជ្ញាកម្ពុជា លោកជំទាវ ជា លាង មានប្រសាសន៍នៅក្នុងសន្និសីទកាសែតបន្ទាប់ពីសវនាការបឋមថា លោក ខៀវ សំផន និយាយថាគាត់នឹងសហការជាមួយតុលាការ នោះគឺជាអ្វីដែលសហព្រះរាជអាជ្ញាចង់បាន គឺចង់ឲ្យជនជាប់ចោទនិយាយការពិត។

សម្រាប់សាធារណជនដែលបានមកចូលរួមស្តាប់សវនាការ ម្នាក់ៗសុទ្ធតែរង់ចាំស្តាប់ការពិតដែលលោក ខៀវ សំផន នឹងនិយាយ។ លោកពូម្នាក់អាយុ៥៨ឆ្នាំ រស់នៅភ្នំពេញ ដែលសុំមិនបញ្ចេញឈ្មោះ បាននិយាយថា “ល្អហើយដែល ខៀវ សំផន ចង់និយាយការពិត ប៉ុន្តែខ្ញុំចាំស្តាប់មើលសិន តើគាត់ពិតជានិយាយការពិតមែនឬអត់។ ខ្ញុំបានរស់ឆ្លងកាត់របបហ្នឹងដែរ ដូច្នេះបើគាត់និយាយមិនពិត ខ្ញុំដឹង។ ដូច្នេះខ្ញុំយល់ថា តុលាការគួរតែអនុញ្ញាតឲ្យ ខៀវ សំផន និងសាក្សីរបស់គាត់និយាយឲ្យអស់ទៅ ដើម្បីឲ្យមានស្មើភាពក្នុងតុលាការ និងដើម្បីឲ្យយើងទាំងអស់គ្នាដឹងការពិត”។

ដោយឡែក លោក ស៊ុំ រិទ្ធី អាយុ៥៩ឆ្នាំ គឺជាអ្នករស់រានមានជីវិតពីគុកតំបន់នៅខេត្តសៀមរាបបានព្រមានថា៖ “ខ្ញុំសុំផ្តាំទៅ លោក ខៀវ សំផន ថា កុំឲ្យគាត់សហការតាមរបៀបដូច ឌុច។ ឌុច និយាយការពិតតែ៣០ភាគរយប៉ុណ្ណោះ អញ្ចឹង សូមលោក ខៀវ សំផន កុំធ្វើដូច ឌុច ឲ្យសោះ។ ខ្ញុំចង់ផ្តាំទៅលោក ខៀវ សំផន ថា នេះជាឧិកាសចុងក្រោយរបស់គាត់ហើយ ដើម្បីរកយុត្តិធម៌សម្រាប់ជនរងគ្រោះនិងសម្រាប់ខ្លួនគាត់ផ្ទាល់។ បើគាត់មិននិយាយការពិតពេលគាត់ស្លាប់ទៅ ព្រលឹងគាត់នឹងមិនបានស្ងប់ទេ ព្រោះជនរងគ្រោះទាំងអស់សុទ្ធតែស្លាប់ដោយបិទភ្នែកមិនជិត”។

លោក ស៊ុំ រិទ្ធី ជាប់នៅក្នុងគុកភូមិភាគឧត្តរ ដែលមានទីតាំងនៅខេត្តសៀមរាប អស់រយៈពេលជាង១ឆ្នាំ។ នៅលើខ្លួនរបស់គាត់មានសម្លាកស្នាមជាច្រើនកន្លែងដែលបន្សល់ពីការរលាកដោយសារបបរក្តៅស្រោចលើខ្លួនគាត់។ ក្រៅពីនេះ គាត់បានបាត់បង់សមាជិកគ្រួសារចំនួន៤នាក់នៅក្នុងរបបខ្មែរក្រហម រួមទាំងឪពុក

ក៏ប៉ុន្តែ លោក រ៉ាអ៊ូល ម៉ាក់ ជេណា បានសម្តែងសុទិដ្ឋិនិយមថា៖ “ខ្ញុំមិនបារម្ភអំពីរឿងនេះទេ ខ្ញុំយល់ថា ជនរងគ្រោះដែលនៅរស់នឹងពន្យល់អំពីអ្វីដែលបានកើតឡើង ហើយការស៊ើបអង្កេតបានរកឃើញភ័ស្តុតាងគ្រប់គ្រាន់ដើម្បីដាក់ទោសជនជាប់ចោទដែលជាអ្នកទទួលខុសត្រូវខ្ពស់បំផុត។ ដូច្នេះ បើទោះបីជាជនជាប់ចោទ មិននិយាយក៏មិនអាចធ្វើឲ្យដំណើរការរបស់អង្គជំនុំជម្រះអាក់ខានដែរ”។

ប្រជាជនជាច្រើននាក់បានសម្តែងក្តីជឿជាក់លើតុលាការខ្មែរក្រហម ហើយផ្ញើក្តីសង្ឃឹមថា តុលាការនេះនឹងរកយុត្តិធម៌ជូនគាត់ក៏ដូចជាជូនប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាទាំងអស់។ លោក ស៊ុំ រិទ្ធី ដែលរស់នៅជាមួយនឹងសុបិនអាក្រក់អំពីបទពិសោធន៍របស់គាត់នៅក្នុងរបបខ្មែរក្រហមអស់រយៈពេលជាង៣០ឆ្នាំមកហើយនោះបានសម្តែងសុទិដ្ឋិនិយមថា៖ “ខ្ញុំសង្ឃឹមថា បើមានតុលាការនឹងមានយុត្តិធម៌សម្រាប់ជនរងគ្រោះ។ ខ្ញុំសប្បាយចិត្តណាស់ដែលមានតុលាការនេះ ព្រោះខ្ញុំបានធូរស្រាលក្នុងចិត្តខ្លះ បើទោះជាមិនធូរស្រាលទាំងអស់ក៏ដោយ។ ខ្ញុំអរគុណតុលាការដែលបានពន្លឿនសំណុំរឿង០០២ ព្រោះវ័យរបស់ជនជាប់ចោទកាន់តែចាស់ហើយ បើនៅតែពន្យារពេលទៀតគាត់អាចស្លាប់មុនពេលត្រូវកាត់ទោស”។

សម្រាប់ជនរងគ្រោះ ក៏ដូចជាសម្រាប់សាធារណជនទូទៅ កង្វល់ធំបំផុតសម្រាប់សំណុំរឿង ០០២ គឺជនជាប់ចោទអាចបាត់បង់ជីវិតមុនពេលការកាត់ក្តីត្រូវបានបញ្ចប់។ លោក រ៉ាអ៊ូល ក៏បង្ហាញសេចក្តីសង្ឃឹមថា ជនដៃដល់នឹងរស់ឲ្យបានយូរដើម្បីទទួលខុសត្រូវចំពោះមុខប្រវត្តិសាស្រ្ត។

សំណុំរឿង ០០២ ជួយផ្សះផ្សារបួសផ្លូវចិត្តរបស់ជនរងគ្រោះ

នេះប្រហែលជាសំណួរដែលនៅតែពុំទាន់អាចស្វែងរកចម្លើយឃើញនៅឡើយ ក៏ប៉ុន្តែសម្រាប់ជនរងគ្រោះមួយ ចំនួន តុលាការខ្មែរក្រហមបានធ្វើឲ្យគាត់បានស្ងប់ចិត្ត និងបន្ថយកំហឹងចំពោះរបបខ្មែរក្រហមនិងមេដឹកនាំនៃ របបនោះ រួចទៅហើយ។

លោកយាយ ជ័យ នៅ អាយុ៦៨ឆ្នាំ ដែលធ្វើដំណើរមកពីខេត្តកំពង់ស្ពឺបានថ្លែងថា “ខ្ញុំធូរស្រាលក្នុងចិត្តច្រើនណាស់ដែលបានអង្គការ (រដ្ឋាភិបាលនិងអ.ស.ប) យកចិត្តទុកដាក់រកយុត្តិធម៌ឲ្យ។ តុលាការនេះគឺជាសំណងផ្លូវចិត្តសម្រាប់ខ្ញុំហើយ ខ្ញុំមិនចង់បានអ្វីសម្រាប់ខ្លួនខ្ញុំទៀតទេ ប៉ុន្តែបើអាច ខ្ញុំចង់បានស្តូបសម្រាប់រំព្ញកដល់ជនរងគ្រោះផង ដើម្បីឲ្យក្មេងជំនាន់ក្រោយដឹងនិងចងចាំផង”។

មិនខុសគ្នាប៉ុន្មានទេ អ្នកមីង អ៊ុន រ៉ន អាយុ៥៨ឆ្នាំ បានមានប្រសាសន៍ថា៖“ខ្ញុំមានអារម្មណ៍ធូរស្រាល រំសាយកំហឹងខ្លះ ពីមុនខ្ញុំមានអារម្មណ៍ខឹងគុំគួនព្រោះថាគ្មាននរណារកយុត្តិធម៌ឲ្យ។មេដឹកនាំអស់ហ្នឹងចាស់ៗអស់ហើយ បើដាក់ទោសគាត់ទៅក៏មិនដឹងជាបានប៉ុន្មានឆ្នាំដែរ ខ្ញុំចង់តែឮមេដឹកនាំអស់ហ្នឹងសារភាពទទួលកំហុសតែមួយម៉ាត់ខ្ញុំអស់ចិត្តហើយ”។

លោក រ៉ាអ៊ូល បានចែករំលែកការយល់ឃើញរបស់គាត់ថា៖“ខ្ញុំជឿជាក់ថា ប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាប្រហែលជាស្គាល់ឈ្មោះជនដៃដល់ដែលសម្លាប់ឪពុក ម្តាយ បងប្អូន ឬមនុស្សជាទីស្រលាញ់របស់គាត់ ក៏ប៉ុន្តែបន្ទាប់ពីសំណុំរឿង ០០២ នេះ ពួកគាត់នឹងស្គាល់ឈ្មោះ អ្នកដែលចេញបញ្ជាឲ្យសម្លាប់ គាត់នឹងដឹងអំពីវិធីដែលគេរៀបចំនិងចេញបញ្ជា និងអំពីលទ្ធផលពិតប្រាកដនៃទង្វើទាំងអស់នោះ។ ខ្ញុំយល់ថា ការដឹងនេះសំខាន់ខ្លាំងណាស់សម្រាប់ជនរងគ្រោះ ដើម្បីឲ្យគាត់អាចបិទទំព័រដ៏ខ្មៅងងឹតនេះបាន”។

As Cambodia’s educational system develops rapidly, both public and private institutions of learning have seen notable improvements. Study materials are no longer produced exclusively in Cambodia, but are also imported from abroad to support students. Meanwhile, many new bookshops where students can buy all the necessary school supplies have opened their doors throughout the city.

Surprisingly, there are 20 bookshops surrounding Bak Touk high school and its environs. Bak Touk is considered the central school in Phnom Penh. There are various special private classes that operate in the school, and lots of bookshops have opened to meet this new demand.

This week, “What’s New” discusses five bookshops that have opened next to one another near the high school. As their owners realise that Bak Touk is the best block on which to do business, they are running their businesses non-traditionally, facing risk as well as reward.

From my point of view, opening up five shops right next to one another is a bad idea for everyone involved. First, all the sellers will compete to have the lowest prices and the latest products.

For instance, a new bookshop that opened just a week ago had not been properly prepared. It has no decorations and offers a poor selection of office and school supplies. It has few customers, and in my opinion it may be forced to close.

This trend may give buyers a chance to explore more products, but shoppers’ decisions will be complicated by having too many options.

I have been a customer at these stores, and my problem was the need to keep moving my motorbike from one to the next if I didn’t purchase anything. Frankly, because the stores are so close together, I didn’t have a good shopping experience. But if you go shopping on foot, you may enjoy the shops’ proximity.

នៅតាមដងវិថីត្រសក់ផ្អែម មានផ្ទះឈើមួយខ្នង ដែលជាអតីតកេរដំណែលពីជីដូនជីតារបស់លោក អ៊ុន វ៉ាល់ឡឺរ៉ូ ជាប្រធាននាយកដ្ឋានត្រួតពិនិត្យ និង តាមដានគម្រោងវិនិយោគ។ ប៉ុន្តែក្រោយពីរបបខ្មែរក្រហមបានកន្លងផុតទៅ ផ្ទះឈើមួយនេះ បានក្លាយជាកម្មសិទ្ធិរបស់អ្នកផ្សេងហើយ។

លោក អ៊ុន វ៉ាល់ឡឺរ៉ូ បាននិយាយថា៖ «ផ្ទះខ្ញុំ បើនិយាយឲ្យចំទៅ ក្រុមគ្រួសាររបស់ខ្ញុំរស់នៅតាំងពីបុរាណកាលមក គឺជាឈើ។ ខ្ញុំមានផ្ទះមួយខ្នង ផ្ទះដែលជាកេរអាករពីជីដូនជីតាខ្ញុំមក»។

លោកបានបន្តទៀតថា៖ «បច្ចុប្បន្ននេះ ផ្ទះនេះស្ថិតនៅម្តុំផ្លូវត្រសត់ផ្អែម ហើយ មានសង់ថ្មពីក្រោមផ្ទះឈើនោះ ប៉ុន្តែខ្ញុំភ្លេចឈ្មោះពិតប្រាកដរបស់វាហើយ»។

ទោះបីលោកមិនសូវមានជំនាញខាងផ្ទះឈើក៏ដោយ ប៉ុន្តែឈរលើទស្សនៈជាអ្នកជាអ្នកសេដ្ឋកិច្ចម្នាក់ លោកក៏បានបញ្ចេញមតិលើបញ្ហានេះថា តម្លៃនៃផ្ទះឈើ គឺប្រាកដជាមានប្រយោជន៍ណាស់ ហើយតម្លៃនោះមិនមានប៉ះពាល់ដល់អាយុជីវិតមនុស្សដែលកំពុងតែរស់នៅ ក្រោមដំបូលផ្ទះនោះទេ។ លោកគិតថា តើផ្ទះមួយខ្នងនេះអាចអភិរក្សបានឬទេ?

លោក អ៊ុន វ៉ាល់ឡឺរ៉ូ ក៏បានបញ្ជាក់ឲ្យដឹងទៀតថា មិនមែនតែលោកទេដែលមានចិត្តចង់អភិរក្សផ្ទះឈើ សូម្បីតែឪពុកម្ដាយក្មេករបស់លោកក៏មានគំនិតបែបនេះដែរ ព្រោះជីតាក្មេករបស់លោកគឺជាជាងឈើធ្វើផ្ទះនោះ។

ជាងនេះទៅទៀត លោក វ៉ាល់ឡឺរ៉ូ ក៏ចង់រក្សាទុកជាសញ្ញាណខ្មែរមួយដែរ ដោយឈរលើទស្សនៈមួយថា៖ «ខ្ញុំស្រឡាញ់ផ្ទះឈើណាស់។ និយាយរួមទៅ ខ្ញុំឲ្យតម្លៃឈើ ព្រោះខ្ញុំគិតថា នេះជាសម្បត្តិធម្មជាតិដ៏វិសេសវិសាល ហើយជារចនាប័ទ្មខ្មែរ ដែលយើងដឹងហើយថា ជាអច្ឆរិយរបស់ខ្មែរដែលបង្ហាញពីសញ្ញាណដ៏អស្ចារ្យរបស់ខ្មែរកាលពី សម័យមុន»។

A day in the life of Sea Chanthou, Sales Administrator of Motor Image (Cambodia) LTD.

It’s more and more common for graduates to find jobs outside their field of study. For example, Sea Chanthou, 23, received her bachelor degree in accounting from Vanda University but now works for the Motor Image car dealership (Subaru).

After hearing about her bachelor degree, I was shocked. She had studied marketing but her current work was in management! Regardless, she explained to me that this didn’t pose a huge problem because she had worked selling cars since freshman year.

When I showed up at the Motor Image dealership on Mony Rathy Boulevard, I had to ask the receptionist in order to meet with Chantou.

I assumed this meant she always works in her office upstairs, but in fact she goes back and forth between the showroom and her office all day.

“When we have customers, I have to go downstairs in order to show them all the new models we have in store,” Chantou explained.

After chatting with her for half an hour, it seemed that she was quite free for a working day. She explained that right now her schedule wasn’t very packed because her operating manager had gone to Vietnam to participate in Vietnam Auto Teach 2011.

I also noticed that her desk was covered with magazines relating to new car brands. I asked her about them, and she told me it was her job to follow developments in the automobile industry and give an update on during the weekly staff meetings.

“I have to read all the magazines and surf the Internet to keep up to date with everything that is going on with cars. I have to check on everything related to my responsibilities,” Chantou said.

However, as with any private company, all employees have to discuss anything they would like to do with their boss. Chantou said that if she wanted to do something relevant to Motor Image, she must get it approved not only by her operating manager in Phnom Penh but also her general manager in Singapore.

And she’ll be even busier once her company begins launching new cars and preparing reports, some of which I saw her printing during our visit.

In conclusion, Chantou assured me that, although she may be working in a job dissimilar to her major, she still manages to perform well. “When I get busy at work, I have to ask for help from my co-workers and try harder to meet those challenges,” she said.

Although it was only a short meeting, I gained some valuable insight into the challenge of working outside your field of study.

Khmer Silk processes

On Tuesday June 2011, my friends and I went to shoot some standalone photos at Arey Khsat Island of Kandal province. We shot some photos about how to produce Khmer Silk there. It looks quite good and surprising.
According to Chan dara, owner of Silk Work Textile For Khmer Traditional Silk, said that in her commune, there is no one who is working on such a feeding worms; however, plenty of families are weaving and selling their final products.
Chan Dara's family has started this work for three generations since her great grand mother.

Chan Dara continued that she bought those worms from Seim Reap province. Before, she just fed only 150 worms but now up to maybe 7000 worms since now on.

If you are considering becoming an elite xylophone player, the experiences of Pov Punisa may help guide you on your way.

Though she is not interning with Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) at the moment, as she has in the past, the 19-year-old is still living a very active life, and learning as much as possible along the way.

Apart from her English courses at the New World institute, she spends every Saturday morning working as a secretary at the Rotary club of Phnom Penh, Saturday afternoons teaching music at A New Day Cambodia, an organisation that provides a holistic support programme for poor children in Phnom Penh, and she still finds time to teach classes with Dan, the co-director of Elastic Cambodia at CLA.

The mission of Elastic Cambodia is to listen to, observe and collect old Khmer songs and music and put them down on paper for posterity’s sake, and to ensure that at least this part of Cambodian culture does not disappear.

Pov Punisa is a perfect fit for the programme. Not only does she love playing and listening to music in general, she is one of few Cambodians who can call themselves an expert at playing the roneat ek, an instrument used to play traditional Khmer music called pinpaet. She said that her initial interest in Pinpaet happened by accident, as she overheard the music being played while on an errand to pick up something at the market. She didn’t know what the music was called, and had no inclinations to be a professional musician, but she soon began studying in earnest and now music is a big part of her career, and life, considerations.

“Before it was really difficult for me because I had to memorize all these songs and become comfortable with the beat of this ceremonial music,” she recalled in an interview with Lift.

Moreover, Pov Punisa realised that she could share and learn so much more about Khmer song and arts. In pinpeat, the roneat ek is the lead instrument and it is a vital part of the style. There is no pinpeat without the roneat ek. No instrument is easy to master. It takes a great deal of time and patience to become a master.

Pov Punisa just arrived back from the United States and she is already prepareig to put on a performance on the traditional Khmer insterucment. She left for America in April and performaed across the US as an ambassador for Cambodian culture.

Pov Punisa said that when she was in the US with the Children of Bassac they stayed with local people in the city they were playing in that night. These stops included New York City, Boston, and smaller cities along the Eastern seaboard. “We are proud that we have Khmer music,” she said.
