Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) species are small trees (up to 30 feet) with knotted branches, aromatic leaves, and white flowers. The oil is steam distilled from the harvested resins of the trees, which contains approximately 8 percent essential oil that is composed of many constituents. The Commiphora species are indigenous to north-east Africa and southwest Asia, particularly in the Red Sea regions of Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen. The oil is best avoided during pregnancy as it has been used in Chinese medicine for menstrual problems and to clear obstructions from the womb.

Killing bacteria with cannabis

Pharmacists and chemists have found another use for the multipurpose cannabis as a source of antibacterial chemicals for multidrug resistant bacteria. Ironically, inhaling cannabis is known to damage the lung's ability to fend off invading pathogens, but the ingredients in cannabis, particularly the cannabinoids, have antiseptic properties. Although scattered research has been conducted since the 1950s, no comprehensive study existed that relates the structure of cannabinoids with antibacterial activity. Giovanni Appendino, Simon Gibbons, and coworkers attempted to remedy that problem by examining the activity of five common cannabinoids and their synthetic derivatives.

All five cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, and CBN) were potent against bacteria. Notably, they performed well against bacteria that were known to be multidrug resistant, like the strains ofMRSA that plagued U.K. hospitals. CBD and CBG have the most potential for consumer use because they are nonpsychotropic.
Besides identifying antibacterial capability, the researchers wanted to figure out why these cannabinoids are so good at killing bacteria. They obviously are very effective at specifically targeting some vital process in the bacteria. Unfortunately, even after extensive work at modifying the cannabinoids and comparing their activities, that targeting mechanism remains a mystery. The scientists were able to figure out that the position of the n-pentyl chain (orange) relative to the terpenoid moiety (blue) serves to control lipid affinity.
These cannabinoids are promising enough to warrant rigorous clinical trials. They are applicable as topical antiseptics, biodegradable antibacterial compounds for cosmetics, and systematic antibacterial agents.

I have been slacking this post should have been up a week and a half ago!!

After reading a little about this oil I think it is one that no one should be without. I had no idea about all the great stuff it can do.

Thyme Essential Oil Week!

Thyme is a very powerful herb, but the oils is even stronger. It has many amazing healing powers, it can be used for a number of different applications.

Thyme has been around for a log time, the Egyptians used it as one of the ingredients for embalming. The spread of the oil through Europe is credited to the ancient Romans, they used it to flavoring foods.

Some of the benefits are:

Thyme has a good amount of potassium so that makes it good for blood pressure and the bloodstream.

Thyme also contains a lot of antioxidants mainly flavonoids. Antioxidants work very well in the bloodstream by helping the body's cell heal themselves from internal damage. The right type of antioxidants are very important in helping prevent heart disease and some says some forms of cancer.

Healing wounds (small cuts) is another, it does this by preventing bacteria from growing on and within the wound. The thymol in it, will also help prevent infections.

It will also help cleanse the mouth, thymol is one of the ingredients in Listerine.

It is also know for its ability to kill parasitic intestinal worms, put a few drops in a cup of tea.

Lemon Essential oil is made from well lemons and the lemon peels. Lemon juice is one of the most widely drank drinks around the world, its cheap and has many health benefits.

It requires 3,000 lemons to make a kilo of essential oil.

The true origin of the lemon tree is unknown, some people believe that it may have come from Northwest India. For almost 20 years Guatemala has been producing essential oil from peels and supplying it to the essential oil industry.

Lemon oil has large amounts of anti fungal components, some people use it to treat their drinking water. Its also very high in vitamin content, which makes it great for the immune system.

It has a strong impact on peoples mind set, it could be used to increase productivity in the office. While at the same time keeping the air smelling fresh and clean.

California Proposition 19 (2010)

People in California will soon be able to vote to decriminalize cannabis the herb that started this country! Its about damn time, who knows know long it will be until its legal in all states. People who have not heard about the history of the hemp seed, need to read about it (TODAY). Lets just put it this way, people that came to this country (USA) brought it with them in barrels on their ships. You can eat it, wear it, and heal just about anything with it. But yet the government says its bad, hmmmm.

The only reason I bring this into an essential oils blog is because of the what hemp oil can do. It is its own essential oil and has be around since this whole place started. I not trying to say, lets all go smoke a bunch of pot. The stuff stops cancer cell from reproducing, so its probably not that bad for you.

Essential Oil extraction methods

Essential oils are made a few different ways, most are not used today. The most widely used in the world today is steam distillation, new advances in technology may find better ways in the future. It would take roughly 6-8 million lavender flowers to make 1.5-2 pounds of lavender oil.

Steam Distillation

A device very similar to a pressure cooker is used, the steam is pasted through the plant matter. In doing this the oils inside the plant burst out and turn into vapor. The gas steam/oil is then cooled are transfered back to its original state water and oil. The water and oil are then separated.

Maceration

Creates more of a blended oil and not so much a essential oil. Plants are soaked in olive and grape seed oils, heated and then strained and used for massages.

Cold Pressing

Is done by grinding the peels of limes, lemons, tangerines, and grapefruit. Then ran through a press the oils will get squeezed out of the peel. Oil and water will be left behind over time they will bond back to each other. Essential oils made this way and have a shorter shelf life 5-8 months.

Cypress Essential Oil

Anyone that knows me well, knows that I have been diagnosed with Prostatitis. Which I have had for 3-4 years, but I have only know about it for about 5 months. I have been tested for all the know causes and they all came back negative, so that is one good answer that I got from a typical doctor. After getting no help from a so called Doctor's I decided to try the natural method. I have been a firm believer of natural remedies for years.

Prostatitis in short is a bacteria that enters the urethra and likes to hang out in the prostate area. It's really painful and very irritating., it can cause serious problems down the road if not treated. I have been on a few different antibiodics of over the years, none them worked I felt worst while taking them. Currently I'm treating it with Thyme and Cypress therapeutic grade essential oils. Cypress Oil is made from a combination of ancient cypress twigs, foliage and its needles. It is distilled to pull the oil out, which well will talk about this process later.

Cypress oil is made up of A-pinene, cadinene, d-3carene, camphene, bornly acetate, cedrol, sabinene, terpinolene, linalool, a-terpinene, b-pinene, and myrcene. I'm sure there are other that have yet to be discovered, all of which are natural substances.

Cypress can be blended with just about an oil, it does however blend very well with. Bergamot, Frankincense, Lavender, sandalwood as well as many others. In most cases it should be used with some type of carrier oil.

Massage the affected area by mixing cypress and a carrier 2-3 drops cypress and 8-10 drops of an carrier.

Sore Throat/ Strep Throat

Application

Inhalation is going to be your best bet for this, can also be used by mix 1 drop cypress and 10 drops carrier. Then applying to neck and wrapping with a warm towel.
