Well, make that his shell. The American blog darling has revealed himself to be just one person, a 24-year-old playing under a completely made-up moniker cribbed from Rosicrucian iconography. How’s that for obscure? (His given name is actually Dexter Tortoriello).

A detail of the cover for Dawn Golden and Rosy’ Cross’ debut EP

But these days, with the way music circulates quickly as data, that was all anyone needed to know to fall in love with his bedroom-produced, electronic indie pop. Well, that’s not an entirely accurate term. In hazy-textured songs like “Blow,” also the title of his debut EP, there are Gen-Y snippets of all kinds of styles. The songs themselves are often downtempo slow, but built on rattling pseudo-hip-hop beats, but overlaid with pop piano and mournful, singer-songwriter style vocals. It’s definitely music of the short-attention-span, iPod generation, but it comes together in a beautifully heartbreaking way.

The handful of tracks Tortoriello has allowed to circulate on the Internet have been enough to score a joint record deal with Downtown Records and super-producer Diplo’s own imprint, Mad Decent. It’s due out on April 12 in the States, where Dawn Golden and Rosy Cross just played its first real string of super-public dates, as part of the annual industry-centrix SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Tortoriello’s pulled his Blow EP form his Bandcamp site, which now remains surprisingly blank (http://dawngoldenandrosycross.bandcamp.com/), but you can still legally enjoy the track “Blacks” below until the next record comes out. And check out this promo trailer for Blow, but only if you’ve got a strong stomach — that mystery stain on the bed is probably best left unexplained!

Considering the rabid platform-agnostic content consumption of today’s fans, it may even happen sooner rather than later.

Considering the rabid platform-agnostic content consumption of today’s fans, it may even happen sooner rather than later.

When we talk about music merchandise, the first things that usually come to mind (aside from their albums themselves) are clothing lines, paper ephemera like stickers, and maybe a signature scent or a few action figures. For the true hardcore collector, however, there’s another type of extremely valuable collectible to amass: slot machines.

Casino slot machines: The next great frontier for pop music merchandise?

While newer artists haven’t really ventured into licensing their likenesses and creative output to slot machine manufacturers and online gaming developers, a number of musical icons have slowly but surely penetrated the realm of real-money gaming.

There are already two Michael Jackson slot machines, for example. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill quick cash-ins, either. The latest, called Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, features a number of the King of Pop’s most famous songs. It even comes with videos, a virtual concert bonus, and a surround-sound chair.

Genre doesn’t seem to be a deterrent to entry, too. Legendary thrash metal band Megadeth, considered one of the “Big Four” in the world of thrash metal, has its own slot machine. It seems like a strange merchandising venture for a metal band, but it does exist, albeit only as an online game.

The choice seems not so strange for merchandise-heavy band Kiss, whose members have lent their likeness to everything from limp balms and Rubik’s cubes to condoms and caskets. It should come as no surprise, then, that the band has also had a slot machine themed after them.

Casino slot machines: The next great frontier for pop music merchandise?

The undisputed king of musician-based slot machines, however, is Elvis Presley. In fact, you could argue that without The King, there wouldn’t be a market for these kinds of slot machines at all. IGT, who basically pioneered the modern era of licensed slot machine cabinets, really started the ball rolling with the first Elvis-themed slot machine in the late 90s.

That particular slot machine was the first to incorporate licensed music tracks and videos into the cabinet, something that has since become a staple not only for current-era artist-themed slots but for pretty much every new slot machine.

It was soon followed by a number of other Elvis-themed cabinets. When IGT eventually moved into the online gaming landscape, it brought Elvis with it. The latest title, Elvis The King, debuted on Betfair during the week of what would have been The King’s 78th birthday.

Casino slot machines: The next great frontier for pop music merchandise?

Licensing has lately become a big enough part of pop music that it wouldn’t come as a surprise if we start to see slot machines featuring today’s crop of artists in the future. Considering the rabid and platform-agnostic content consumption of today’s fans, it may even happen sooner than anyone thinks.

Krista Papista is a talented electronic musician who is originally from Cyprus but is now living and working in London. Although Krista is incredibly working towards her next album release in early Autumn 2013 we were delighted that she took the time to be interviewed by Essential Pop. Read on to find out, amongst other things, how Krista became interested in music initially, what she’s currently working on and with whom she would like to collaborate with given the chance.

Krista Papista

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your musicvand who you are what would it be?

I like to describe my music as “Sordid Pop”. I am an electronic musician / producer based in London.

Q: What is your musical background?

I started playing guitar and writing lyrics when I was 13. Over the years I took vocal, piano, trumpet and music technology classes. I started performing when I was 14.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

They have been quite interesting. I have been performing constantly at various venues around London (East bloc, 93 feet east, Candy Bar etc), played festivals around Europe ( Women’s International Festival, 2nd Athens Music Festival, Summer Love Fest) and have collaborated with DJ/ producer Jimmy Edgar on a remix of my single “Dirty Boy Dancer” .

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Erik Satie, David Bowie, Chet Baker, Johnny Mercer, Billy Holiday, Elvis, Kate Bush.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I would love to gig with Peaches, Cocorosie and The Knife.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

When I am working on my own music I don’t tend to listen to a lot of other music because I just don’t have time or my ears need a brake from music but I have been listening to a Greek singer called ” Annabouboula” recently.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I work entirely on my own in my home studio, I usually need to spend a few days on a track. I record and mix everything on Logic Pro.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

I think they are both equally important.

Krista Papista

Q: Where are you based?

London

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I was born in Cyprus. Cyprus is a beautiful place to grown up in but I now feel like a Metropolitan kind of person. London has been a formative a formative place for me , contributing dramatically to my self-development and satisfaction of my interests.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on new material for my new album that will be released in Autumn 2013.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Release an album, more music videos and get signed with a suitable record label.

Q: What do you do to relax?

Read books, jog and travel.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Decrease self-doubt and increase your discipline and patience.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Sweet, smooth and angelic. I want to revamp R&B from the 2000′s.

Q: What is your musical background?

I started taking piano lessons when I was 6 -- I hated it. I had a hard time reading notes and I would end up coloring the pictures in my book instead. I eventually grew to have an appreciation for it when I started singing at 13. I taught myself how to sing and play and I’m grateful for those lessons; it’s an amazing feeling being able to create your own music.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been pretty hectic. Actually, my whole life has been pretty hectic. It’s always hard finding a balance between recording new music, performing, making videos and just having time for friends and family. You always have to be consistent when putting out music or else people forget about you. Our generation has a short attention span thanks to YouTube and all the easy access to entertainment. There’s always something to watch if it’s not you!

Q: Who inspires you musically?

I love Brandy, Destiny’s Child, and Mariah Carey to name a few. They’re all strong and beautiful women and have kept it classy throughout their career.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Beyoncé is on fire; whether you love her or hate her you can’t deny her talent and her dedication. That’s why I appreciate her as an artist. She’s always delivering and puts everything she has into her music. I want to be just like that.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I would love to make a song with Drake. He adds so much flavor to anything he touches he has yet to disappoint me. He’s definitely up there on my list.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Kat Dahlia – Gangsta on REPEAT

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Some people like to write first and then create the music around their words, but I like to feel the vibe of a beat first. If I’m feeling the beat, I get inspired to write, and the melody and the words just come.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

I definitely can’t place one higher than the other -- they’re both equally important to me. If you don’t have a good melody, it’s hard to stay focused on the words no matter how good they are. The same goes for an amazing melody; if the words don’t make sense, how can you relate as a listener?

Chrissy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFJBRjscxbo

Q: Where are you based?

I’m from Ottawa, Canada.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s definitely a challenge trying to be a singer, yet alone anything in the entertainment industry. Although we are the capital of Canada, we’re only a city population of 1 million, and we all end up working for the government in one way or another. That’s sort of your fate by default living here.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I am currently in the midst of finishing up my single and shooting a music video. I’m really excited to start working on my first official album. I released my first EP in November 2012 and the response has been amazing so far. I can’t wait to share more music with my fans!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

In January of last year my cover song to Crew Love was featured on WorldStarHipHop. I gained massive exposure and thousands of new fans. I even caught the attention of the producers from The Ellen DeGeneres Show. I was walking on clouds for a while!

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

I want to grow as an artist and create something different. I have a clear vision of what kind of music I want to make and that’s why I’m so excited to make this album. I was experimenting with my first EP; I was trying to figure out what I like, what my sound is, who Chrissy is.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’m currently in the midst of negotiating a tour with a special guest appearance. Once everything is settled I’ll be announcing all the details! Fingers crossed.

Q: What do you do to relax?

This is going to sound super nerdy, but I play video games in my down time. Xbox, PS3, Wii… I do it all. I blame it on having 2 brothers. My phone is pretty jam packed with games too. If I’m staring at my phone for too long, it’s not a text message.

Chrissy

Chrissy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfqzGMyCV9k

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

Lebanon for me is a must see. The beauty and the culture is one of a kind. My father is Lebanese and British, I feel like I would be learning part of my history by visiting the country.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

It’s not easy. You have to absolutely love what you do. It’s an emotional rollercoaster with a lot of highs and lows. There will always be obstacles in the way and people telling you no, but you have to always stay motivated and keep pushing. Ask any great artist, they’ll tell you they received countless no’s before receiving a yes. People will turn you down, people will put you down, people will want you to fail. You have to be consistent, positive, and willing to go against the grain.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I really love my fans because they appreciate the music I make for them. I wanted my first EP to be a free download so my fans could get a taste of my music. This album is where they are going to have a chance to help me. I’m starting a campaign on Indiegogo.com to raise money for my album. My fans and supporters can donate anything they want to help contribute to the making of my album. The campaign will be launching soon and I need your help!

Holly Elle is an upcoming Canadian singer / songwriter who is currently living and working in Nashville, TN. After checking out some of Holly Elle’s latest music videos we were really keen to learn more and were therefore really honoured when she agreed to be interviewed by Essential Pop. Read on to find out about Holly Elle’s musical influences, which modern artists she would like to collaborate with given the chance and what she does to relax when not working.

Holly Elle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JywdZyEylmk

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Can I sing 20 words of a song instead? No? Okay hmm let’s see… Canadian Pop/R&B recording artist and songwriter, looking to bring inspiration and fun to listeners, and encourage people to be themselves… this is starting to sound like a Craigslist ad…

Q: What is your musical background?

I have been a music lover all my life. It runs in the family. I started by listening to whatever my parents, and later my older brothers, were listening to. I also got the opportunity to go to the opera and the theater, which led to studying those things and becoming classically trained. I started writing my own songs around age 12, and once I knew I wanted to pursue artistry as a career, I began melding and incorporating all those styles and influences into my own work.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Fantastic! I am so proud of my latest project, Leopardess, it’s getting great feedback. I’ve had some wonderful accomplishments and I make sure to stop and celebrate every one.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

There are many people, but definitely my Dad. He hasn’t had formal training but plays and sings by ear. For some reason he can pick up random instruments and play. Also, The Beatles, Elton John, and Mariah Carey.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Beyoncé!!! She is killin’ it. She’s demonstrating longevity while at the same time remaining so current. As an entertainer she is an absolute powerhouse. And she’s parlaying it into an enterprise. As her hubby would say, she’s not a businessman; she’s a business, man!

I also look up to Rihanna. She infuses her style so uniquely into these amazing songs and the result is hit after hit after hit. Bam!

I’m also really loving Macklemore & Ryan Lewis so much right now, because they’re awesome, but especially because they’re an indie success story. Us indies need that proof that it can be done.

Holly Elle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45lU0kiJcFg

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Yes, the list is long. Paul McCartney: that would be the ultimate. Some of the other artists I’ve already mentioned of course. Also Frank Ocean, fellow Canadian Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Kanye, I could go on and on…

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Just downloaded “Beautiful” from Mariah and Miguel -- loving it.

Also like the Miley Cyrus/Snoop Lion (not to be confused with Dog) “Ashtrays and Heartbreaks”.

And my brother just introduced me to “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)” by the great Stevie Wonder, and I’m obsessed. All these years later and I’m still gettin’ my music from my brothers.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

It really varies. Sometimes I work with a producer who gives me a track and I write the lyrics and vocal melody to that. Sometimes I co-write with people on acoustic instruments and we work together to make it all happen. Sometimes the lyric and melody just come to me suddenly in my head, and the next thing you know, it’s done.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Oh man that’s impossible to answer! Of course they’re both important. I know people who are “melody” people and people who are “lyric” people. But both can bring you to tears. I refuse to choose.

Q: Where are you based?

One of the most beautiful cities in the whole wide world: Nashville, TN.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s awesome. I came from a small town right outside a big city, so I had the best of both worlds. I lived on an acreage on the prairies with beautiful snowcapped mountains in the distance. Gorgeous. And ya gotta love Albertans, they’re great people.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I’m securing outlets for the songs from Leopardess. I’m excited to be partnering with various TV networks again, so watch your favorite shows for some Holly Elle! And as always, I’m writing.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

It was pretty damn cool to see one of my songs played on TV for the first time, with my name scrolling across the bottom. And the first time I saw my name in print in a magazine was a big one too.

Holly Elle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1FX9Mn4eU4

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

The important thing is to just focus on doing my best work and trying to reach as many people as possible with the intent to connect and inspire. That’s the real goal and the real gift, and only great things can come from that.

Q: What do you do to relax?

Watch TV with my dog under our leopard Snuggie.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

In a cabin, with family and friends, in the winter. Fire blazing. Soaking in a hot tub with snow all around. Good food, music, and lots of laughter. Why? The four F’s: Family, Friends, Fun and Food!

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Find your own voice. Literally and metaphorically. And most importantly: trust it.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I’d just like to thank you guys for interviewing me and thank the readers for their interest!

Keith Jacobs is a talented, upcoming singer and performer who is currently living and working in Dallas, Texas. At Essential Pop when we first checked out some of Keith’s music we were really impressed and were therefore delighted when he took some time out of his hectic schedule to be interviewed by us. Read on to find out about, amongst other things, who he would like to collaborate with given the chance, what he’s recently been working on and what he’s hoping to achieve over the next 12 months.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

New Age Urban R&B Music

Q: What is your musical background?

I’ve been singing since I was three. My entire life I have been involved in music in some way shape or form.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been progressive to say the least. I’m optimistic and excited to see what 2013 has in store for. This past year I’ve been fortunate to perform across the US and reach new listeners throughout the world. I’ve had the opportunity not only grow as an artist but as a person; and that growth can be heard through my music.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

I believe that the reason I’m here is to touch and change lives through my music. That’s all the inspiration I need.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

The Dream. Kendrick Lamar. Rihanna. Usher. Kanye West.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Kanye West.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Miguel- Candles in the Sun

Kendrick Lamar- Money Trees

Jeremih- Rated R

Rihanna – Loveeeeee Song

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

For me it just depends on the track. Once I get to the studio I find a track that speaks to me and from there I record my reference vocals. Usually there isn’t any writing so I’m making the vocals and melodies at the same time. From there I go back clean up vocals where needed.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Both.

Q: Where are you based?

Dallas, TX.

Q: What are you currently working on?

Currently I am wrapping up my EP to be released later this year.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Love what you do. If you love what you do then you don’t need any validation from anyone but yourself. Be dedicated. Know going into this that anything worth having will require some type of sacrifice. Believe in yourself and just do it!

Leah McKendrick is an upcoming solo-performing artist who is currently living and working in LA and is our latest Sonicbids competition winner. After checking out some of Leah’s work we were really impressed at Essential Pop and were delighted, despite her hectic schedule that she agreed to complete an interview. Read on to find out about what Leah McKendrick has recently been working on, what music she enjoys listening to and what she does to relax when not working.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

My music is like the hot sun on a chilly winter’s day. I don’t know. I make pop music! My friends tell me it’s like Britney, but edgier, with more singing. It’s fun, sexy, girly and at times dark and moody. That’s more than 20 words, sorry.

Q: What is your musical background?

I grew up on Madonna and Michael Jackson. I’d dance around in my room with a hairbrush, singing in the mirror…the whole deal. Then I started thinking I was a diva because I discovered Celine and Mariah. Then came Britney and Christina. I always did musical theatre but I love pop music. Forever and always!

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Exciting and frustrating… Story of my life! This year has been a big year of making my own opportunities as well as a ton of collaboration. Working with Janice Cooke-Leonard [on the music video for “SICK”] was a huge thrill because I’m a big fan of her work. I LOVED Dawson’s Creek in high school! She’s so cool and relaxed yet she’s got such a strong vision and knows what she wants. I love her.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

She’s more of a creative influence than a musical one, but Lena Dunham is a BIG inspiration for me. She is the creator/writer/star of the HBO series, “Girls” which is my fave. We are almost the same age. She makes me want to do more, achieve more; be better! She drives me to create my own opportunities instead of sitting on my ass. Not to mention that girl is ALWAYS naked and I love it.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I think it’s really cool that some of the new pop singers also rap! Karmin, Cher Lloyd… I try to rap, but I’m…not great. It’s not going to stop me from trying though!

Leah McKendrick

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdjD6tzOT7s

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

The producer, MdL. His stuff is awesome and fresh. He’s already so well respected and he’s like 21! It’s ridiculous.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

I just discovered Sara Bareilles’ album, Kaleidoscope Heart that I’ve been listening to a lot lately. Her voice is perfection.

Q: What is your creative process for writing a song?

It really depends. Sometimes I compile lyrics I’ve written on scraps of paper or my journals and put it together to make a song. Sometimes it’ll all just come out on it’s own and be done in twenty minutes. Has to do with my mood and the song. Usually the first thing to come is the concept or title. I have a few titles in my head that I’ll write eventually. They are filed away in my brain.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

I think every successful songwriter ever would probably say if they had to choose, melody because you can have a successful song with terrible lyrics but usually not the other way around. Still, I’m ALL about lyrics. I’ll change my melody for a co-writer or producer, but I think anybody that has worked with me knows I’m not as flexible when it comes to my lyrics.

Q: Where are you based?

LA, baby!

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I’m originally from San Francisco. Every San Franciscan is proud to be from SF.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I am working on creating a musical web series about two sororities at war. VERY early stages but I’m super excited. It’s going to be a ton of work that is good because I’m a nightmare when I’m not busy. I don’t even want to be around me when I’m not busy.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Roy [Hamilton 3] gave me this track when I was first signed to the label Monarch and he was like, “Kells wrote this song for you.” They gave me this rough of R.Kelly singing. He was barely even singing words; there was just a melody there and a guitar. Completely rough. I was supposed to write the song with his melody and record it. When I was a kid I used to try to sing “I Believe I Can Fly” over and over and OVER. Then here I am with this song R.Kelly and Roy have handed over for me to write and sing. It was a crazy moment because I think it was the first time I felt like a real artist! Not a pretend artist.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve over the next 12 months?

International fame and fortune, of course.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I am pretty exclusively working on shooting material at the moment! So please subscribe to my YouTube channel because I will be doing a ton of web content! Youtube.com/leahmckendrick

Q: What do you do to relax?

I watch a TON of TV! A TON. I love TV. I love American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Revenge, Master Chef, The X Factor, Kitchen Nightmares and of course, Girls.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

May favorite holiday is Halloween and I’d like to do it in New Orleans next year! I’ve never been. I wanna go see some awesome live music and eat jumbalaya!

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten was from an acting teacher, Cynthia Szigeti, but I think it still applies. She said; if you want to make it in this industry, get yourself a life. Friends you like, a relationship you like, a place you like, because you’re going to be here a while. I think that’s so true. If you hate your life here, you will burn out. Have a source of happiness other than your music because the industry can be downright heartbreaking.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

NvS is an upcoming singer and musician who splits her time between Toronto and New York. After checking out her music we really wanted to hear her story. Despite her increasingly hectic schedule we were delighted when she agreed. Read the entire interview below NvS discusses which modern-day artists she looks up to, what she’s hoping to achieve over the next 12 months and her creative process for creating a track.

NvS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x82I0IVmgEo

Q: What is your musical background?

I was classically trained on the piano and took lessons from age 6-12. I’m also a classically trained vocalist and sang mostly Catholic/Christian material at my Catholic School for the Arts. But despite my training, I say my musical background is ALL feel good music.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Life changing. I’ve gone through a personal evolution this passed year, shedding all these layers and understanding who I am as a being and why I’m here. I’ve truly come to understand the purpose of me going after the dream of being a singer/songwriter/performer. It has been very intense to discover all my truths: my deepest, my darkest, my brightest and being able to emerge without worrying what people think about me. It’s been transformative.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Prince, Crystal Waters, Dorothy Dandridge, KRS One…musically I love feel good music and music with great messages so anyone who has something meaningful to say and makes music that is just as meaningful.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I love me some Kanye West! I love his ability to be uninhibited and not worry what the world has to say. I also love Faith Evans; her vocal ability makes you feel everything that she’s feeling when she sings. I love Sam Sparro because he’s fun and Adele, you hear her pain and truth. I also love Reggae music so to me Bob Marley is always current. he’s a big inspiration.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I woke up recently with Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You” in my Spirit and heart. I didn’t know why because Outside of what I’ve heard on the radio, I wasn’t too familiar with his music. But when I woke up with this song in my head, I realized that at some point he affected me. So I downloaded all his music and really listened to what he brought lyrically. so I’d love to collaborate with Frank Ocean.

I also love Common and Kanye West. Anyone who has something inspiring to say that will make people think.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Of course Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You,” also some Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, Pointer Sisters…Oh and I’ve been listening to WHAM as well, George Michael, he’s the shit! I would love to write a song with George Michael.

NvS

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Everything stems from a personal experience. Right now I’m dealing with this issue, so my new songwriting concept is “he said, she said,” where people twist words. All my music and creative experiences come from my life. I figure why not channel it and shed some light on my experiences.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Melody. Depending on the melody you can make somebody cry or have fun. Melody is the vibration of life. If you put lyrics to melody, people can understand what you’re trying to say but if you’re sensitive to vibration and sound you don’t even need lyrics to understand because it comes from a surrendered channel of emotion.

Q: Where are you based?

I split my time between Toronto and New York. I consider NY my stomping grounds.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Canadians for the most part are very conservative. Canada is a melting pot. It is very diverse and I love being from there. It’s great, go and visit!

Q: What are you currently working on?

I’m working on my EP, which I plan on releasing before the end of the summer. It will be called “Who Is NvS?” and will be a free download for my fans!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Being able to wake up and do this every day. Being able to transfer my life experiences for people to hear and knowing that people are listening and gravitating to the music. That’s everything to me. That’s what its about.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Every day that passes I wake up with a goal. I aim to make sure that I stay true to myself and that I don’t get carried away or get caught up in this business or this world or what society deems to be acceptable. I intend to stay true to myself no matter how big or successful the music becomes in the wider world. I can’t lose myself.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

Not right now but you can definitely keep up with me on Twitter.com/whoisnvs, Facebook.com/whoisnvs and my website www.whoisnvs.com so when I announce some dates you’ll be able to come out and experience!

Q: What do you do to relax?

Well right now I’m sitting by the Hudson River looking out at the water, which is pretty relaxing. In general though, I listen to good music, I dance, I ride my bike. I look at every day and take advantage of what life has to offer.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I can’t say that I have a favorite place to vacation but anywhere where there are beautiful clear blue oceans, a clean beach and a lot of water sports. Preferably where there is high cliff I can jump off, but if I’m water skiing, jet skiing and by the ocean having fun, then I’m happy.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Make music that is true to who you are because that’s the only way you’ll be able to connect with your audience.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

My music speaks truth in serious and not so serious ways that offers my fans a place in time to react to reality.

Q: What is your musical background?

I’ve been trained in Jazz and Classical music, but I grew up listening to James Brown, Michael Jackson, Sade, Queen, Journey, Biggie and Tupac. So my musical background is what ever I was exposed to growing up and you can hear it in my music.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

These past 12 months have been trippy. I still can’t believe how much people really love my stories. Ever since I dropped my album “Memoirs of a Stoner” in May, my career just took off.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

Oh wow there are so many. Kanye West, Sade, MGMT, Coldplay, Jackie Wilson, Michael Jackson, The Eagles, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, John Foster, Prince. I could go on and on.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

There are five artist right now that I am huge fans off. Frank Ocean, MGMT, Cocaine 80′s, Theophilus London, and Santigold.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Coldplay, Prince, MGMT, Theophilus London, and Kendrick Lamar.

Q: What music are you listening to at the moment?

I am listening to Cocaine 80′s at this moment.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I dont have one. When I go through something or someone close to me does, I write it down and turn it into a song.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Both. I believe that the story is really important but without the right melody its like having a book with no emotion to make you keep reading.

Q: Who are you called?

Terri J-Songwriter. I use that to make sure folks know I am a writer and a producer and not an artist.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Alternative Pop Soul that tells a story through the Music, Lyrics and Melody… You get all that with a radio-friendly twist!

Q: What is your musical background?

I sang in chorus in school, I even lettered in it. I loved wearing that jacket (lol)! I’ve got great memories of listening to my parents play the hottest soul jams back in the day. I would listen to the radio and always loved all kinds of music. I went to school and work and got into the life routine until one day a tune came into my head like they always had. I just chose to write it down that time. I took that song into the studio and my songwriting career went from there. I loved being in the studio and learned so much from the owner there. That’s how I got into producing my music. I took in all the feedback I got early on from other music professionals and it really paid off.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Phenomenal! Along with getting a major endorsement as an Artist Ambassador for the nationwide ad campaign for Supercuts Salons called Rock the Cut, I signed with a music publisher and had music licensed by two major fashion brands, Zegna and Hogan, for their worldwide retail store locations along with the Baglioni Hotels. My song “Yearning and Hoping” came in #1 in Urban for the 2nd Annual Intel Superstars Competition out of hundreds of entries that was cool. I, along with the other winners was featured in a promotional DVD for Intel. I had several DJs out of the UK play my music on their stations and shows. I ended up getting radio airplay in over 22 countries and hitting several Top Tracks list and my song “I’ll Come Running” making the Amazon UK Bestsellers Rank in Mp3. I really had to look for opportunities since I was not an artist. I often found doors closed. I’m pretty determined though so I kept going and it started paying off. I feel like I have hit my stride.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

I am inspired more by the song than a specific artist. I love strong melodies and lyrics and some of the songs I like have inspired me. For example, one of my favorite songs is I Can’t Tell You Why by the Eagles. The melody and concise style of presenting a song has inspired how I approach some songs. I also like Pop music that can span and utilize many genres.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I am inspired more by songs than a specific artist. I like songs that are melodic, soulful singing and lyrics. I still remember listening to my first rap song back in the day at a friend’s house. It was awesome…that is what I look up to…songs that give you that feeling…

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Yes, different producers including Babyface!

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Too many to name!

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I’m usually inspired by a life story that I have heard, seen on TV or a movie, read, experienced etc. I have a similar writing process as someone writing a script or novel. I like to develop the storyline and speak from the perspective of the character through the lyrics, melody and music.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Both. If the lyrics or the melody aren’t right then the song is not right.

Q: Where are you based?

In the Washington DC Metro Area in the U.S.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Exciting. There is amazing culture, fashion, music, restaurants etc. It is growing as more and more comes to the area. You have the urban, suburban and rural parts of the area…all the seasons. You can get it all here.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I am working on a showcase with a recording artist performing my material. I also have an upcoming photo shoot, and some other press. I also have some other things percolating that hopefully I will be able to tell you about…always looking for opportunities you know (lol).

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Making the Amazon UK Bestsellers Ranking in Mp3s! Also, signing with the music publisher in Italy that led to my in-store music licensing with luxury fashion brands Zegna (Ermenegildo Zegna), Hogan and the five-star Baglioni Hotels. It was amazing as it brought together 3 of my passions music, travel and fashion!

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

More licensing opportunities and artist ambassador endorsements…maybe there is something else out there too for my music…I’m open!

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

The showcase with an amazing recording artist performing my material… I also have an upcoming photo shoot, and some other press interviews. I also have some other things percolating that hopefully I will be able to tell you about…always looking! (lol).

Q: What do you do to relax?

It’s hard for me to relax I have to admit. But when I try…I read, listen to music and watch a little TV.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I like going to sunny, tropical locations because water is so relaxing and beautiful. I also love exciting urban locations like NYC because of the amazing culture, art, and music. It reminds me that there is so much in the world to learn about and experience.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Trust your gut instincts. This business is a marathon of many steps so you have to be patient, have a clear focus on what you want to achieve. Take some time to really figure that out. When I first started to pursue my career, I went down a path I thought I was supposed to go down. I found a lot of closed doors. However, I didn’t give up and went down another path, it turned out better! Don’t give up if you don’t accomplish what you want at first…just keep going!

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

Yes, that they are appreciated for taking the time to read about me. Also, thanks to EssentialPop.com for the feature interview.

Tamara Bubble is a soulful pop performer from Brooklyn. Where we first discovered Tamara’s musical vibe we were impressed and she is therefore one of our featured artists for this month. Read the full in-depth interview below where Tamara discusses, amongst other things, her creative process for creating her music, what she’s currently working on and what she’s hoping to achieve over the next year.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Picture the ultimate blend of Pop, Jazz, Dance, R&B, Hip Hop and Soul. Music that defies genre from the Brooklyn bombshell.

Q: What is your musical background?

Gospel. I’ve been singing in church since I was old enough to talk. I decided to make a career out of this about two years ago. I remember I met with a producer who heard I could sing. He had some tracks that he needed reference vocals on to submit to the majors. He told me I had pipes lol, but then he asked if I wrote music too? I told him “I do now”! The next day I wrote 10 songs in like a couple hours.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

One Grammy short of amazing LOL. As an independent artist, I’ve been featured in numerous publications, developed a widespread fan base and been fortunate enough to expose my music to the masses via Fox 5 TV and NBC. I’ve opened for major artists in the U.S., received mainstream radio play. I just recently embarked on my first promo tour in March to promote my debut album “Unleashed”, which slated to drop this August. The feedback from industry contacts and fans has been remarkably positive and my live shows are beyond bubbly!

Q: Who inspires you musically?

In general, I’m inspired by some of the big name Jazz, R&B, Dance, Gospel and Rap legends overall. When it comes to Jazz, I love to scat and Ella Fitzgerald is the reason why. For rap, Biggie was the reason I actually started to pay attention to the lyrics. I love beautiful harmonies so I listened to a lot of the 90s groups in R&B and Gospel like Take 6, En Vogue, Brownstone, SWV, and the list goes on. Oh and Michael Jackson IS the King of Pop! Nuff said.

When it comes to writing though, I’m spired by what I see, feel and experience. Whatever’s real to me because that’s what people can relate to. I could see a girl walking down the street crying … and the lyrics and melodies will come to me. Like the entire hook I will just start singing it. A lot of times it’s the music production too. I can listen to a track for the first time and start singing the hook and everything. It really just comes to me.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Nobody really modern. Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah. I think they are excellent, powerful examples of women in music that both sing and rap and are remembered for their meaningful, powerful messages and lyrical content.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I haven’t really focused on that because I’m convinced that I should continue to work on my craft and solidify my sound as an artist so that other artist will know what I can bring to the table. On my debut album, I actually didn’t do any collaborations because I didn’t want the co-sign of a major artist. I just “Unleashed”. I wanted my fans to know that I have a crazy range. I sing everything from Baritone to Soprano, I sing the lead and background vocals, the harmonies, I rap, and I scat. I want people out there to know me for my complete sound. I think as time goes on, the collabs will come.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to Lena Horne and Michael Jackson (his ‘Bad’ album was my ultimate favorite). A lot of times, I won’t listen to the music. When I know the lyrics, I sing to myself.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I’m all about blending genres and speaking on touchy subjects. I enjoy singing or rapping about the big pink elephant in the room. I record the good, the bad and ugly! When recording, I really get the opportunity to play with my melodies and range. I come in the studio with the lyrics and how I intend to lay down the vocals, but some of the productions that I plan to rap on, I end up singing to or scatting or combining all three. Some songs have no production. My creativity has a very real, raw edge to it.

As far as the writing process goes, it’s very unorthodox. I’m really all over the place. Most of my songs come in the shower … but that sentence may not be suitable for kids lol!! Other times, I use my cell phone to record melodies, when I don’t yet have the lyrics in mind. I write on napkins, “bubble” gum wrappers, if I’m on my laptop I type, and when I don’t have anything around me to write on, I’ll sing, sing, sing until the lyrics / melody get stuck in my head!

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

I always believed the lyrics were because the message and meaning of your song is what people live through, but when I started scatting, I realized that sometimes no lyrics or sounds and words that you can’t interpret are just as powerful when it comes to music. It’s whatever the listener believes and feels from your music that it most important.

Q: Where are you based?

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s like any other major city with crime, poverty, adversity or all the bad stuff you hear on the news. I think growing up in that environment allows you dream big and want to make a change or be heard. Lots of big name artist came from my city. They all have their stories. I grew up with a lot of love from my family. I grew up in church. The environment does determine the outcome. I wouldn’t change mine for the world.

Q: What are you currently working on?

My debut album “Unleashed” is complete and ready to go. It is now available on Pre-Order from my official website TamaraBubble.com. click on “Music”. I’ve been all over the East coast and Midwest states in the U.S. touring. I’ve also been doing heavy radio promo in West Coast and online. Once the awareness is there I’ll add more shows from the west coast and overseas. It’s such a fun and sexy process.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

I did a show in New York and when I finished my set, I was introduced to a new fan of mine who was still in tears from the song last song I sang. It was highlight for me because that’s when I realized that music is real and people are influenced by the lyrics, the delivery and the power in your message.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

I hope to have garnered international presence as an indie artist. I just want the opportunity to share my music with world. I want people to have an effect on people’s lives and decisions through something I may have sang or rapped about. Some video that I may have done.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

Yes!! All of upcoming promo tour shows are listed on my official website TamaraBubble.com as well as the dates and where you purchase tickets in advance. I’m still adding shows to the tour so I’ll be in a city near you very soon babes!

Q: What do you do to relax?

I like me time! Long hot baths, long showers. Most of the time when I’m relaxed music will come to me lol and interrupt my relaxation. I force myself to get up and write it down so I don’t forget it or I end up singing it repeatedly so that I won’t forget it.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I don’t really like the summer, but it’s because of the humidity. And I don’t really do because I can’t swim. LOL I’ve always wanted to go to Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic, but I’d probably stay inside away from the sun and water writing music or singing.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Have patience and be prepared to waste time and money. In this industry you’ll meet people that don’t deliver or don’t have the connections they say they have. It’s all about being willing to start over and over again until you’re dealing with the right people and team, but as an indie artist, there are many things you’ll have to be able to do for yourself.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?

I have a thing for chicken, ice and video games in no particular order lol. I’m not a comedian although I do keep people laughing around me. I also act and model. Musically, I’m just getting warmed up. Stay tuned.

Shout Outs: to my team … My manager P-spell, stylist Tope, choreographer Javier, publicist Cece, make up artist Vikki-O, graphics designer Carlton and everyone else working non-stop behind the scenes to get the bubble popping.

Shout out to you guys for allowing me this platform to expose my music and artistry. I always say it doesn’t matter how good your music is or how much talent you have if no one ever hears it.

Shout out to my fans and Team Bubble. I really appreciate those people who will recognize the talent before everyone else co-signs. Thanx 4 sticking with me babes! It’s only a matter of time ^_^

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Sophia, 19-year-old urban girl, Singer, Songwriter whose music is Youthful, Aggressive, Vulnerable, Edgy & Unapologetic.

Q: What is your musical background?

I started singing from a young age, growing up listening to R&B, such as Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah & Usher. I started playing piano at 11 and went on to study music production at a fantastic Music school. I’m a songwriter first, above anything. I love writing for other artists and working with great musicians.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

This time last year I just put out my first single “Till We Die”, which was a Pop/Dance track.

I’ve since moved onto more Hip Hop Electronic, Dubstep sound this year.

I’ve been writing a lot and working with some great producers. I’ve been concentrating on getting an original sound. I’ve managed to get a lot of great magazine features, radio play and got my track played on some cool TV Programmes, so it’s been a great 12 months. I feel like I’ve grown a lot with my music since my first release.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

I listen to a lot of 90s Hip Hop and R’n’B. I love Biggie & Aaliyah, but The Weeknd and Rihanna’s music really inspires me. There are a lot of great songwriters also, such as James Fauntleroy & Ester Dean.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

Rihanna’s one of the coolest artists out there, she has great music. Beyoncé is amazing; she’s such a magnificent live performer. Also, The Weeknd and Drake; I love their sound.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Musically, It would be a dream to collaborate with producers Hit-Boy & Chase & Status.

Sophia

Q: What music are you listening to at the moment?

I love Lana Del Rey, especially her lyrics. Rihanna’s latest album Talk That Talk is a favourite too, and I’ve always got 2Pac my playlists.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I usually write the lyrics and melody first. Then, the producer and me establish our ideas for the music, everything from the drums to the vocal. During the writing process, I know exactly how I want it to sound. It’s also important that the person your working with gets you and your style!

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Both for me. I guess melody in general as it’s what’s the catchiest, and stays with most people when they hear a song. But the lyrics make the song what it is. They determine the vibe. The lyrics are the story.

Q: Where are you based?

In London, baby!

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

I grew up the first half of my life in Dubai. So, I’ve been around different environments! Dubai’s beautiful, and London has great energy. Everyone has a dream; everyone’s motivated to get somewhere! I love being around people like that.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I’m always writing. I recently wrote a song I sent to Cassie. I’m also working on new Dubstep tracks of my own with a brilliant DJ, and collaborating with great rap talent in London… stay tuned!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

I wrote a song with Grammy Award winner Mack Woodward who did Beyoncé’s ‘Ego’.

And having the support from such established, talented musicians is helpful. Their wise, they know their stuff and give great advice.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

I’m looking forward to going to the States to work on great music with Grammy winning production team Savant Soundz. I also hope to get a few videos done, and to get some radio play on 1Xtra would be a dream.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve got none planned at the moment. I’ve done a few gigs in Mayfair clubs, including Embassy. I’m concentrating more on the music side at the moment. I would like to start doing stripped down acoustic sets, their always fun.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

New York! The lights, the art, the diversity, the energy, talent and pace. Everything you could want is there.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

The last 12 months have been a long lesson. I’ve learned so much in the past year and continue to seek knowledge.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

I’m inspired musically by life in general. I’m more of an observer so when I write. My music reflects the true emotions and feelings I have upon the world.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I look up to 50 Cent and Jay Z a lot especially from a business point of view. I mainly listen to Kendrick Lamar and follow his music. I like the messages in his music. He’s really saying something.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1868" title="S.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw1G6LSCSW0

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

I would love to collab with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Lil Wayne, The Game, Eminem and most of all my favorite rapper 50 Cent.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I listen to Kendrick Lamar a lot. I love music with soul, passion and a message behind it. I feel I can relate to his music cause I’m also an artist trying to find myself in this world. Also he doesn’t follow others. I also create my own style and continue to reinvent myself.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Since I create all my songs from scratch, I start with an idea or melody and build from that sound till I feel I have created a masterpiece defining a part of who I am as a person in a soulful type of way. As far as my writing creativity goes, it’s more of a feeling or inspiration I get from the track. I feel sometimes the words just come to me subconsciously and I always try to incorporate some type of knowledge or inspiration for the enlightened listeners that keys in to every word so that they fully understand the message. My ultimate goal is to create an art form that connects with the listener to the point where they become believers instead of just fans.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Personally I think the lyrics are more important. I’m more geared towards the conscious art form of rap and like to have a strong and sometimes deep message in a track that shows off my knowledge and creativity. The way I see it is if your not making somebody else’s life better then what are you doing with your thoughts? Positive thinking brings a positive aura; negative thinking brings a negative aura. I’m a strong believer in thoughts creating reality.

I love to create melody’s I feel that if your melody, lyrics, and song as a whole connect with you. Nowadays it’s all about being yourself as a artist and branding yourself. If you’re imitating other artists its shows that your not original.

Q: Where are you based?

I’m based in the Tampa Bay area but I’m originally from Georgia.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s a little tough but with faith and persistence you can overcome any obstacle.

Q: What are you currently working on?

I do more then just rap and make beats. I’m a model/actor for John Casablanca and Hollywood auditions as well in California. I’m currently working on getting my clothing line ‘’S.Burley By Conde Couture’’ launching off soon. We’re gonna have the S.Burley shirts up for sale for everyone who wants to support.

My album ”Through It All’’ is in the works. We have some amazing songs on the album that I personally think touch many topics and show my creativity like no other. I’m really excited to release my album I will definitely key yall in when we find out when it’s releasing. It should be within the next few months.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

I would say the respect and advice I got from the people I look up to, One of my best friends Andres Yepes of Star Video Productions taught me a lot and my clothing designer from Conde Couture just the positive people I put myself around. My manager is most definitely the most influential person in my life, how much more blessed can you be to have a mother who’s there for you and believes in you when nobody else believes.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Within the next year I feel my limitations are limitless. With persistence I hope to have a successful clothing line, excellent career in acting/modeling, get my music widely known to the world and keep making songs. I feel will gain a larger range of audiences.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’m currently working more towards my fashion shows to start marketing my clothing line and launching it within the next few weeks.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I meditate a lot its keep me stress free and I feel like I gain an abundance of wisdom after every session. I strongly recommend meditating its part of my way of life.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

I want to thanks Essential Pop for believing in me and allowing me to gain more exposure. Much love and peace to all.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Pittsburgh’s Playboy, Pretty Boy Swag

Q: What is your musical background?

Well I come from a musical family, my mother was a singer, and some of my uncles all played instruments, and I use to play keys a little.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

Well I lost my father this past year so that was one of the hardest things I ever had to go through, also a lot of ups and downs with this music, and just life in general.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

When I here good music, that inspires me, also just the love and the passion for it, as well as the release from it, good or bad, there is so much feeling in music!

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

I’m not really sure if there is one artist…? I think there are so many that are good, when I just here something that is good, it just does it for me. But if I had to say, I would say Flo-Rida, Eminem.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Would love to do Mac Miller or Wiz Khalifa just because there also from Pittsburg, but other then that, I think Eminem would be awesome or Maroon 5.

Choze

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Pumpin’ some Choze, and whatever crosses my ears that I like, I like alternative, some rock, love the 80′s early 90′s so…

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Well I think it’s different for every song. Sometimes I listen to the music, and then whatever I feel comes out, or sometime I can just be somewhere and come up with a concept I think would be cool, or dope, and then I roll with that!

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

Both sometimes… sometime the lyrics because what the person is saying might be really important, but sometimes the melody because of the way the music sounds and the way it makes you feel..!

Q: Where are you based?

Pittsburgh, Pa.

Q: What are you currently working on?

Working on the new album witch I can’t name at this time but its definitely going to be a banger!!!! Trust me!!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Opening some sold out shows, Sean Kingston, Wiz Khailfa, Ja Rule, Bone Thugs & Harmony.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Just do what I feel I have been put here to do, tour/perform and work, help my family and people that are less fortunate and give them hope, and hope there is something special in me that they see, that helps them in some way.

Darius Lux is an upcoming singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California who effectively combines rock and soul to produce some great pop music. Darius has incredibly profound and varied experiences in music and we were delighted when he agreed to complete a feature interview with Essential Pop. Read on to discover who inspires Darius musically, what he does to relax when not working and what he’s hoping to achieve over the next 12 months.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Soulful and thoughtful rockin positive pop music by a singer-songwriter, legal alien and lover of life.

Q: What is your musical background?

I began playing classical piano and violin at age 6 and within a year was accepted at a music conservatory near London. By the time I hit early teens I felt unfulfilled by the rigidity of classical music and developed a strong hunger for American R&B, Rock and Hip Hop. This fuelled me to teach myself guitar, bass and drums and move to NYC where I got involved with all levels of production and performance.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

It’s been a good past year with many new challenges and accomplishments. Most recently, I have found myself magically surrounded by people who make videos and have thus created 2 unique music videos over the last year which have been satisfying in different ways. I feel more open to the visual medium now and seeing where to take an idea beyond just recording it musically, I am excited to interface more with video in the future. I also played to the biggest crowds of my career so far with a gig at the Castro Street Fair in San Francisco to 1000’s of people – definitely felt like we were taking it all to the next level.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

So many people do and for different reasons. As a small child I was dazzled by Michael Jackson and Prince as entertainers and performers. Stevie Wonder has been a big influence as a recording artist, writer and singer. Artists like Tom Waits and Bob Dylan inspire me as lyricists and storytellers. Bono inspires me in his ability to grasp a bigger perspective of the world thru his music.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

More recently I have been very inspired by bands like Muse, so glad grandiosity and virtuosity have been brought back to Rock. I also love MuteMath – they have such a great, original sound and an epic live show. Michael Franti (Spearhead) inspires me as a human being; his message resonates greatly with me. Ben Harper too, every record just gets better and better and he is so prolific and always keeps it interesting with constant new collaborations.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Ha, what a great question – you know, I’d love to write a song with Chris Cornell, his voice is staggering and it would be fun to really road test those pipes one-on-one, not sure I could gig with him tho, he’d blow me out the water! Gigging would be a different thing altogether, I’d like to play a gig with acts that are diverse and different from me like Foster the People, Collie Buddz, Keane and Nikka Costa.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

At a glance, “Cough Syrup” by Young The Giant, “Somebody that I used to know” Gotye, “Us and Them” by Easy Star All-stars, “Cinema” Remix by Skrillex, “Valleys of Neptune” Jimi Hendrix, “All the right moves” by OneRepublic, “Everlasting Light” by The Black Keys

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

Different every time, could be a lyric that is floating around and drives it, a new guitar gadget with a groovy sound, waking up in the night with a bassline playing in my head – the spark of inspiration is random and the process then varies on what type of catalyst I’m dealing with, it never gets boring

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

That’s a good question, its close but I’d have to say melody since music does ultimately transcend words – like, I could still fall in love with a song even if it was sung in a language that I don’t understand.

Q: Where are you based?

LA

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s the tops. I really love LA and Southern California tho I grew up in London and studied/lived in NYC. LA is perfect for this time in my life – it has so much live music and festivals all year long and who can resist the beach and the sun. Plus, I can go skiing in the winter a few hours away, or pop to Mexico or go into the desert.

Q: What are you currently working on?

A new album, on the one hand I wanna press a button that will just have the whole thing done and at the same time I am enjoying the new journey of making music again, allowing it to flow naturally, allowing it to change and be different than before…

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Honestly, I don’t think I would say there’s been a monumental highlight yet – I had a great record release party at the House Of Blues (Hollywood), playing to 1,000’s at Castro Street, making the last video (“Way That It Goes”), but there is so much I am still driven to do that a real highlight is still waiting to manifest in its fullness…

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

I’d love to be put on the map of popular music in some way or another – whether it’s a viral video, actual radio play, a great placement on a TV show or movie – any of those things would help greatly and make a difference now

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’m in the middle of booking the summer festivals – first one I just got confirmed for is the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna. We play from 7-9 pm on July 20th; the rest is still coming together right now.

Q: What do you do to relax?

Hot tubs usually do the trick;) I love to be in nature, far away from the noise of industry and the city, being able to sit with my feet in a stream and listen to the birds is probably the most perfectly relaxing thing I can think of.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

Thailand, I have been before for and stayed for 2 months and would go again in a heartbeat. I love how it feels almost like another planet, there is modernism in the midst of ancient tradition and it all somehow works. I have traveled all over Thailand and visited the islands and it is jaw-dropping from the hill tribes to waterfalls to fruit dropping off the trees to 2000+ year old temples. Plus the people are so sweet and really do smile everywhere they go – hence its nickname “Land of a thousand smiles”. I’d also take a week in Fuji or Aruba too LOL

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Never say never and never take “no” for an answer.

Editor’s Note: Darius Lux has the technical ability and all of the artistic attributes to enjoy a long and successful career in the music industry. We’re looking forward to his next album with much anticipation at Essential Pop!

Q: Who are you called?

I am called NOVA. AKA The Tall Slimmy. AKA SUPERNOVA. HA!

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

The most colorful box of 6 foot four random shit on earth.

Q: What is your musical background?

I was in my school chorus since 4th grade until 9th grade…..I’ve been writing and recording my own music since I was 10 years old using video game music and a tape recorder. I took Keyboard class in 11th grade and was in our Keyboard Ensemble group in 12th grade……I sang the Grinch live over keyboards people……….KEYBOARDS…..I also remixed it and added drums, but that’s for another interview!

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

I just had my first child in the last 12 months………how do you think it’s been??? haha! The last 12 months have been the most engaging, challenging, and powerful 12 months of my life thus far. I couldn’t be happier. I truly feel like a SUPERNOVA now.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

People in general inspire me. People who aren’t artist AND people who are….just PEOPLE……fighters, mothers, street people, musicians, wrestlers, rappers, painters, tap dancers, FANS……people man. To be honest the most important inspiration I have musically is my Mother and Father. I want nothing more than to give them a life they never thought possible man. Word up.

Q: Which modern day artists do you look up to?

LL Cool J, Will Smith, U2, Nas, guys like that I look up to genuinely….Jay of course….Eminem of course…..I just love how they do so much and HOW they do it.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Me and Wiz Khalifa at the highest points of our careers……that is inevitable…..we already performed together underground as we came up together in Pittsburgh….now I wanna do it when we both got a Grammy. As far as COLLABORATIONS……..Without QUESTION I need 30 days with Missy Elliott and Timbaland TOGETHER………..I need another 30 days with THE NEPTUNES together in a room…………..I need a song with Queen Latifah produced by Easy Mo Bee……..and I need a song with Will Smith AND DJ Jazzy Jeff featured…..I also need to perform a gig with U2…..would be unbelievable.

Q: What music are you listening to at the moment?

A bunch of SUPERNOVA…uh….The most RUGGED hip-hop I can find with the most flagrant cuss words……annnnnd Electronic Light Orchestra! HA! I’m eclectic and erratic so sue me!

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

There is none. Whatever feels right at that moment, whatever the record tells me to do….that’s what happens. If it’s “write the lyrics now with no beat on”….I’ll do that………or maybe its “don’t write at all”……I’ll do that. Its whatever my heart feels.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

What does the song FEEL LIKE! Feeling. That’s most important. Which means it is a gumbo pot of everything that matters. I love Waka

Flocka sometimes……I love C-Rayz sometimes…….it’s HOW DOES THIS MAKE ME FEEL…….THAT is most important.

Q: Where are you based?

I am originally from Ambridge, PA. I represent Pittsburgh, PA. I reside and love currently Atlanta, GA.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

It’s like living smack dab between a forest and a volcano…..hard to explain….

Q: What are you currently working on?

My new album SUPERNOVA will be free to download on June 11th, 2012 from novatribe.com! IT’S GONNA BE F*CKING GREAT!!!!!!!!! GREAT I SAY!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Watching Wiz Khalifa make it. Hands down the most humbling and amazing experience…and it’s the highlight of my career. Just to be a part of the same struggle we come from as Pittsburgh hip-hop artist and to

WATCH that happen how it did……then to see him again recently in

Atlanta and meet Snoop Dogg. Truly something amazing just to witness and having performed with him numerous times. When we got to talk and I just got to say congratulations……I was just very happy to WATCH and in a small way…play a part as a P-city MC that helped support.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Live, Take care of my family, and perform SUPERNOVA music like CRACK!!!!!!

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?

It would have to be…..Kentucky………….as in….Kentucky Fried Chicken. Because I’m Black and that’s where I’d like to spend my holiday biiiiiiiitch! HA! Naw but for real………….I have no idea. I don’t know enough about awesome places yet.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

Nobody cares more than you do. Do what you LOVE….Do it yourself……Do it until you cannot. Fin.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?

Vintage progressive, trying to keep a classic twist on a futuristic sound.

Q: What is your musical background?

At the beginning it was classical, then I moved into Blues/Jazz, then into urban Hip Hop and into Pop. Now I’m into Dashism, whatever that may be.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?

It has been the most awesome ride ever. I cant even say that its been a rollercoaster because although there are always ups and downs in life I’m in a great place compared to where I was twelve months ago its been awesome to see how things move and showed me the value of having a great team.

Q: Who inspires you musically?

My daughter. My life and great musicians like Cee-Lo Green, The Gap Band, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Trick Daddy, Ludacris, Flo Rida and producers like J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Kd Lamb?

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?

Absolutely! Cee-Lo would have to be #1 on that list. Stevie Wonder would be incredible, Lil Wayne, Scarface and LeCrae and LAWS, signed to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?

Honestly now I’m listening to a lot of newer artists from my city. I’m trying to keep it local; I want to build up the music scene in Jacksonville there are great artists like, Tough Junkie, Yung Trap and Young Cash.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?

I go into my studio and I turn off all the lights, I have blue lights in there so we call it the blue room. I sit at the keys and its just me and the keyboard and I’m just playing. I mix in various sounds and when I hear something that clicks I run with it. I don’t stop when I create I add everything I can think of and figure it out later. I call it the moment of impact, that’s the most important moment when creating music.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?

They are very equally important. Think of any music that has longevity, anything you listen to today that you listened to ten years ago, they have both.

Q: Where are you based?

Jacksonville, Florida.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?

Definitely has its ups and downs, what I’ve noticed in my travels lately, people that are in the music industry know there is a lot of talent in Jacksonville but the general public doesn’t know who are from here, e.g. the Limp Bizkits of the world. Its frustrating being from here and seeing all the talent and knowing the world doesn’t appreciate it so I’m trying to get people to turn heads this way.

Q: What are you currently working on?

A couple records with Smash Mouth that I’m really excited about, did a record with Cupid called “Pop It Girl” and I’m working with a lot of artists here in Jacksonville. A free project to showcase the talent from JAX as well as working on my next project and touring in support of Tabloid Truth.

My ultimate goal in music is to score movies. I am working with some filmmakers who are doing short films and scoring some movies.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?

Meeting Stevie Wonder. I met Stevie Wonder last January at the NAMM conference in Los Angeles and he was one of the coolest most down to earth guys I’ve ever met. He was playing a YAMAHA keyboard and he was just playing and singing in front of a few guys and me. Had I not stuck with music and been doing this I wouldn’t have had that chance.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months I hope that people really get a better sense of me as an artist. I want to show my musical versatility. Hopefully in 12 months no one will be able to put me in a box or say that I’m not a musician. I don’t particularly care if you love or hate the music as long as you respect the craft.

Q: Do you have any gigs or shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I like to do a lot of charity work so I am doing some shows for the Police Athletic League and my best friend Jeremy Mintzy who just got resigned to the Jacksonville Jaguars does an annual event that I go out to. I have shows in Florida and Louisiana coming up as well!

Q: What do you do to relax?

Everything that I told you in this interview so far! A lot of people consider me a workaholic but that’s where I find my contentment and my peace. Besides that I listen to classical music and read the bible but the main thing is making music. When music becomes a job that’s when people lose the joy.

Q: Where would your favorite holiday (vacation) be and why?

My Dream vacation would be Fiji. I’ve always wanted to go there just because it’s so beautiful. I haven’t been too far out of the country but I’m looking forward to going all over the world. Take a week off.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?

I’m still aspiring myself in a lot of ways but I would say don’t ever stop! Don’t let anyone tell you what you should be doing or what their plan for you is, have a goal and stay focused on it because you will be your biggest proponent.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to let our readers know about?
