Yesterday, Katt and I hit one of our favorite vintage spots, "Golyester", on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles. We had lots of fun trying on some of the amazing AND bizarre finds they had. However, we had a clear purpose -- to find two stunning bohemian gowns on the cheap. Jackpot! We also headed over to Michael's, an all-in-one craft spot here in the states (for you over-sea-ers) to pick out a few odds and ins to create beautiful headpieces and a simple arm-cuff to complete our looks {note: if you don't know how in-love I am with headpieces, allow this to serve as your official notice}.

Well darlings, below is your guide to making gorgeous accessories just like these for your special occassion or, if you're like me, any and every day.

1) Begin by measuring out the length of ribbon you'll need to (comfortably & supportively) wrap around the circumference of your head. Be sure to keep your thumbs in tact with the spot at which the two ends meet in the back so you can mark them. These points will be where the decorative elements begin and end. Then, allowing for plenty of room to tie the ends together, cut the ribbon ends at an angle so that when they hang down the back of your hair the ends are clean. {On silk ribbons, you can lightly burn the cut ends to seal them and prevent fraying.}

2) The main ribbon band I chose came with gold thread evenly lined through it,so I used those lines as a guide for laying the decorative ribbon on in a straight line. Lightly bead in hot glue in 2 inch sections, then lay down the decorative element and firm it into the base ribbon. After 10 seconds, carefully peel the base ribbon away from the paper. Any paper stuck to the backside of the base ribbon won't be seen in the front.

3) Once you've completed part 2, continue with the third layer of ribbon or beading (I chose lace ribbon with pearl beading for extra texture and dimension). This layer can be placed either directly over the first (on a thinner headpiece) or, as I've done, slightly higher up the base ribbon so that the final piece is more multi-faceted.

1) Here, you'll measure out the length of the chain, the same as you did with the ribbon in the tutorial before.

2) Using a pair of fine needle-nose jewelry pliers, open one of the links. Choose a link that is about three links longer than the one that fit most snug to your head in the back. I chose to leave about 2 inches of extra chain hanging - leaving room for error and also because it's a pretty finishing touch.

3) Loop the open link (still attached to its original two links) now to the link on the opposite end of the chain that fit most snug to your head. This will close the headpiece into a circular chain. Be sure to give the link a squeeze in each direction so that its closure is secure. There will be a long section of chain still attached to the second side. Select the length of chain you want to hang down the back of your head and remove the remaining section.

4) On your secondary chain, open and remove the loop that the clasp would usually close into. Set this aside to later attach a bead or pendant to the front center of this headpiece.

5) Using your jewelry/wire cutter, clip off the clasp attachments so that you are left with a long clean chain. You'll then loop the chain through the front center link of your base chain and pull it so that it is also centered with even lengths on both ends of the chain link.

6) With this particular headpiece, I counted out 10 links from the center to one side, wrapped the secondary chain once around the base chain, then looped it through the 10th link on the base. I continued this process until there was about 1 and 1/2 inch secondary chain remaining. Repeat to the second side.

7) Place a dab of hot-glue on a fine, thin metallic ribbon. Set the remaining ends of the secondary chain and the section of the base chain where it lines up into the glue. Before the glue dries, roll the ribbon around this section of the chains. Then use the needle-nose pliers to firm the ribbon into the setting as the glue begins to harden.

8) Take the remaining section of the base chain that you detached in Step 3. Attach the end link of that chain to the front center of the headpiece. Put the headpiece on as you would wear it and measure the length of this third section over the top center line of your head all the way to the back center of the headpiece. Remove the headpiece and attach the third section to the back to now complete the basic form of the headpiece.

9) If you have a pendant or bead(s) that you'd like to place at the front center of the headpiece, use the loop from the clasp you detached in Step 4 to assemble the final touch.

1) For the cuff, we chose a 4 inch wide embroidered ribbon. The starting end was cut at an angle and the wider section of that angle was placed up the arm to fit the increasing circumference of the arm as it travels up from the wrist. To measure where the other end should be cut, simply match the cut end to the length of the ribbon.

2) Place a 1/2 inch bead of hot-glue on the back-side of the ribbon at the top of the band and lay a very thin ribbon into that bead. (We purchased about a yard of the metallic ribbon used in the chain headpiece and used the remainder of it on this step.) You'll repeat this action at the inside base of the cuff ribbon and again at the inside center line.

3) Folding the cuff ribbon in half with the inside facing out, flip it over and repeat the actions in Step 2 with the opposite ends of the fine ribbon. Then, finding the center point of the fine ribbon attachments, make a cut in each of these three. These will form the ties for the cuff to be fixed onto the arm.

Dear Readers,

It's been a while and I've missed you terribly. This recent journey I've embarked upon, delving deeper into my yogic studies and Ayurvedic lifestyle is beyond words, but "incredible" will have to suffice.

If I've never shared this with you before, something of note is that for the last five years I've struggled with some very serious back pain. It wasn't until after several bouts with immobility and a lengthy period of referred nerve pain throughout my body that I made a trip to San Jose for an MRI that provided a diagnosis. I have spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. I also have a herniated disc, a rare one at that since it's centrally compressed causing bilateral pain -- which, in a strange way, has become kind of fun. Allow me to explain. Doctors rarely see this kind of herniation or the symptoms that come with it, so my case has brought on so much attention for medical understanding that it's provided me with greater knowledge AND a better ability to handle and progressively treat the situation. -- If I haven't said this before, I'm a bit of an anatomy nerd. --

That said, between the intricate details of meditation, pranayam (yogic breathing techniques) and my now very intense multiple times per day physical yoga practice, I'm coming into a new and truly wonderful place. All of these things are bringing me so much closer to what we call the Seer, the Purusha, the Soul... my soul... me. Working towards looking through the mind, as a window, from the vantage point of my soul, life is appearing more and more miraculous.

Now, I know, you're grown accustomed to the fashion dialogue and accounts of my adventures to new boutiques, eateries and exciting mini-vacations. You will not miss one of these things, they're still to come. As a matter of fact, this week my assistant, Katt, and I will begin sharing DIY's for Prom Season, a day-trip to Long Beach and a new little must-see shop I've been dying to share with you, as well as some fantastic tips for your best summer yet!

I simply wanted to share with you, as we've grown so close these past few months, where I've been and where I'm going. Each Monday, I'll be writing you to share a piece of my personal experience and how this yoga intensive is broadening the horizons of my life towards a more blessed living experience. I hope that you enjoy traveling a little nearer to my story each time and, even more, I hope that somehow this inspires you to live each day a little more slowly, with passion for every passing moment and with love for every living thing.

I'm Claire Wilson and this is my Savvy Saturday...

Just a little about me - my passions are travel, fitness, various sports, various music (anything from opera to something heavy) and, most importantly, FOOD. My personality, some may say, is a bit like "Monica" from Friends. I'm a clean freak! All things must be in their correct place and that cup better be on a coaster (Claire, you're just a Pisces, girl... I feel ya!). Oh, and I say what is on my mind.

I believe in fate. Everything happens for a reason. In a polar duality, I also believe you make your own luck and make things come to you, so long as you're willing to dedicate the time and the effort. I believe in life on other planets, but do I believe in fairytales? Hmmm... I am a typical Piscean, so I would say I'm a dreamer and maybe anything is possible.

I was born in Hannover, Germany before moving to Kuwait for two years and, then, finally to England when I was six and-a-half. I have a brother who is four years older -- we are like chalk & cheese, but always there for each other.

I've never been much of a fashionista. I love watching the E Channel and Fashion Weeks on TV, but somehow I can't quite seem to pull off the girlie look. (Oh girl, give me a day in your closet and that outlook will change drastically!) I like what I like and most of the time I dress for comfort, jeans etc. In recent years, though, (maybe it's my age) I do like to make an effort, especially on Saturdays. The day starts usually around nine A.M., as I'm more of an early bird than a night owl. The gym kit goes on (Adidas, bright pink & black) and I usually go for a run or, occasionally, opt for cycling. The traffic in England isn't exactly outdoor-fitness-friendly, so I mostly do these workouts on a treadmill or hit up a spinning class.

After a good hour of sweat & a long shower, I feel I've earned the right to explore some tasty options. After all, people, where there is pain there has to be pleasure to compensate! So after throwing on some black Diesel jeans and a lacy vest with matching Abercrombie or Hollister cardi, the hair gets done (by the way, it's currently bright pink!) & the face goes on.

Here's a couple of makeup items and tips I swear by:

Eyebrows: DVA semi-permanent eyebrow powder with stencils
Shadows: Pick a palette that enhances your own eye colour; mine are green so I stick to browns & greys (Mine too! I like to use golds, plums, various shades of rose and blues as well.)
Eyelashes: Rapid Lash Serum - it really works
Perfume: Issey Myake l'eau d'issey Eau de Parfum

My girlfriends and I love to meet up for brunch. One of our favourite places to eat is Chimichangas Mexican Restaurant. The decor is a mix of modern design with authentic south-of-the-border textiles and tones. The kitchen is open and the food is fab. The staff have come to know us quite well, so we have a special off-the-menu order that goes in the second we arrive -- tortilla pizza. Of course, this particular meal wouldn't be complete without a good margarita.

Unfortunately, when it comes to desserts we are not blessed with a Cheesecake Factory. (Oh honey, the CF is great and all, but a stellar bakery with decadent homemade recipes trumps that any day!) However, we do have Lola's Kitchen, situated in Selfridges of London. They have a great variety of cupcakes, but they are most famous for their New York baked cheesecake, and the Red Velvet cheesecake is pretty good too. Suffice it to say, they make a tasty enough pastry that I make a point of stopping by every time I'm in London, no matter the occassion.

Other great eateries I frequent are...

Pierre Bistro in Liverpool - delicious French cuisine, Wednesday night 2 course specials & "learn French" discs played in the loo.

Whiteheads Fish & Chips in Hornsey (this one's my Grandmother's hot spot) - the best thing about this place is that after filling our tummies, we walk along the beach and she tells me stories of all the trouble she used to get into in the land army during the war. I never get tired of hearing it. I may be a foodie, but one thing I love more than good grub is spending time with my Grandma. She's pretty tech savvy in her eighty-four years and she can drink me under the table -- "A can of special brew with a shot of whisky in it please?", in her adorable Yorkshire accent, HA!

At the end of a good Saturday outing, I'll kick back with a beer or glass of red wine, sink into my sofa and get lost in a great film.

My assistant, Katt, and I dropped in to visit with Staci of 45Three Modern Vintage Home last week. I walked out with a gorgeous art deco cocktail cart with carved glass, two Dynasty-style gold-framed mirrors with gold rose vines and whimsical birds carved into the centers AND one stellar interview with Mrs. Staci Cain -- owner, prize-winning (well, we'd give her a gold medal) vintage furniture hunter and all around sweetheart.

Katt, EJS.asst - Thank you for giving us your time. Could you start by telling us a bit about the shop and how it came to be?

Staci - The store has been here for about four and a half years. I, previously, had been a marketing director at Warner Brothers and was leaving the corporate arena. I had always loved vintage treasures. I didn't know what I was gonna do next, but I started buying a lot of these great things and storing them in the garage. My husband approached me and said "honey, I think you have a problem"... me, "you do?" ... him, "I don't know. Maybe it's a business in the making, but you need to examine how much you're buying."

I thought, a business... how could I make my passion of finding amazing vintage pieces a business? So, one thing led to another. I started with little estate sales for higher end dealers, but after three of those I realized they were so labor intensive. I wanted something a bit more permanent. I stumbled across this place as a result.

Katt, EJS.asst - And where do you go to scout out the incredible pieces you carry?

Staci - I do a lot of shopping all over the state of California. I do shop within LA, but I mostly try to go to out-skirt places... and if I told you, I'd have to kill you. Matter of fact, the name of the store is from the Old Testament Book of Isaiah. I read the scripture while I was on a trip in France and I was kind of meditating on what's gonna be next. The scripture says, "Grant unto me according to Your riches in glory, Your tender mercies and immeasurable favor, treasures of darkness, and hidden riches, of secret places." I thought, wow, if I ever do anything, I'm gonna use that scripture. So, the places ARE secret, so... I would have to kill you (tosses her head back and laughs)... or you'd be struck with lightening or something.

Annalise, EJS - We definitely fear the wrath. HA! Katt mentioned that she saw a few permanent framed pieces throughout the store about filming here. Could you give us the scoop on those?

Staci - Of course! I was really scared to death to open the store. I had come from running teams of people and managing different companies, but somehow, the thought of entertaining the public -- letting people see what I had chosen and decide whether they want to buy it was incredibly frightening to me. So I put a sign on the door that said we'd be open on a Saturday. That sign had been up for a long time when the day finally came. I looked disheveled and was cutting flowers in the back when my husband came and said, "it's time to open."I panicked and said, "I can't open now, look at me!"Him, "You're going to open the store right now."

It was 10 am and he opened the door.

I thought, no one knows I'm here, I'll just mill about and no one will come in. Maybe, about 45 minutes later, this lady came in and she was asking, "how much is this? how much is that... and this.. and that?" So, quickly, I was throwing out numbers because I hadn't priced everything. After I had given her a general ballpark, she was like, "I'll take it all!" and I said "what do you mean you'll take it all?" because that kind of left me with maybe seven items in the whole store. So I asked, "what do you do?" and she said, "my name is Leslie Pope and I am a set designer for Sony." She was working on a Will Smith movie at the time. She was my first customer and has remained one of my best customers through the years. She's amazing and what was so awe-inspiring about that experience was she was so thorough in everything she did to pick pieces out. I didn't even know people from the studios bought from these kind of stores so it was just such an education and she was such an incredible professional. Her set design crew, when they came to pick everything up, she had taken measurements and pictures -- she just was so organized. I was very impressed with her. About three weeks later I got these amazing letters from her saying "thank you so much, good luck!" and she's remained a really great customer. I was so proud that that was my first customer that I have her letters framed all over the store. We get set designers from everywhere, Mad Men and True Blood. That's been a big part of our business.

Annalise, EJS - Can you tell us about how you come up with the design schemes and presentation for each section of the store?

Staci - We do a lot of research to kind of generate inspiration. My favourite magazine ever is Vogue Living Australia. I'll scour through different international mags and the latest interior design books and just come up w/ something in my head. I'm in love with stripes. It {the striped wall} reminds me of Paris. So much of the store was kind of thought through while I was on that trip to France I mentioned. I went up to Paris and then down to the South of France. I really wanted to have a feeling of beauty. I want people to come in and luxuriate, be comfortable & feel like this is a place where they can get inspired. We spend a lot of time painting and moving things because we have a lot of repeat customers and I always want them to get a different look.

Anything Parisian and anything French has been a huge part of my inspiration. I think that's the genesis of how it (the store design) came to be.

Annalise, EJS - Are there any favourtie films or novels you've come across wherein the way something's written sticks with you and maybe the phrasing says "this is what a room should look like" or, I mean, everyone's inspired by Audrey Hepburn... everyone loves the vignettes from Breakfast at Tiffany's and the bathtub couch... is there something along those lines that feeds your inspiration?

Staci - Well, it changes all the time. Of course, working for Warner Brothers, I became even more passionate about film than I was before working there. You know, I see different things that inspire me. I just saw Out of Africa and the sets in that movie are just amazing. Mad Men, of course, I'm a big fan of. Also, Downtown Abbey for the clothes and the colors of the Victorian Era. I just Tevo'd Love Story and I'm so excited to watch it because I know I'm gonna love Ali MacGraw and all of her looks. A lot of times I may see an outfit, say, in British Vogue, and try to recreate it through a scene. It really varies and I spend way too much time, probably, researching what's gonna be great. Like this, I saw the orange and navy blue walls in a new Parisian Interiors book that I got a few months ago hot off the press and I thought, "Oh my GOSH, we've GOT to recreate this!" So, we went to the trouble of doing this striped wall, which I'll probably never paint over.

Annalise, EJS - Maybe a bit about your personal style... on a regular day, do you find yourself cultivating more of a vintage style or kind of pulling from the modern, hipster now-era? Our fashion and our home decor are constantly feeding off each other, so I'm just curious what an average day is like for your personal styling.

Staci - Well, I'm mainly in jeans and probabay a huge designer purse and a vintage coat. I try to always have one killer vintage piece that I'm wearing, whether its a necklace or earrings. I really love all the latest labels, but then I'll add in something that says, you know, "I have an eye for the sixties." It's really sixties and seventies that I hone in on. And eighties, when Kelly Wearstler did the book Hue and we knew the 80s were officially here, I found myself really loving that era again. Sometimes I do wonder, about the sixties and seventies, how so much of that style has seemed kind of timeless to generations after. You know, if you think about the revolutions and the political unrest, there was so much going on and so much that has changed... between Russia and the USSR, and so many great minds that have passed... but the sense of style and fashion has stayed around and those decades kind of keep re-emerging. So, I am fascinated with that, like that hat you're wearing, it's so good!

Annalise, EJS - It's my Faye Dunaway homage. She always had a bunch of these floppy fedoras and amazing hats, so anytime I see one I'm like, "OOOHHH, part of my collection now!" But you're totally right. There's always some new take on the fedora, or those little bucket hats, and playsuits of the 20s all the way through the 50s are now the strapless jumpers of today. And jodhpurs, making their way back!

Is there anything new, in the way of events, coming up for you?

Staci - We're getting ready today for a visit from some designers tomorrow. Daily Candy is bringing a group of customers on a bus tour to different vintage stores, so it seems like we always have a lot of events going on here. Emily Henderson of Secrets of a Stylist on HGTV is coming in, so it always seems like things are in flux. It's nice to sit down and take a break and then I'll get back to the frantic pace of trying to get ready for this tour that's coming up. But I really do appreciate you just coming in and really appreciating the store. I mean, that really means a lot, you know, when you work hard and you're thinking... I mean, my whole background was sales and marketing and the thought of starting a store... I wasn't trained in interior design, so it's really my eye and it's nice to know when people appreciate the pieces that I've selected. So, thank you guys for coming in!

Annalise, EJS - I have to admit, I've meandered through your website about a hundred times.

Staci - Have you?!

Annalise, EJS - I'm a thrift and vintage lush, plus I'm obsessed with the music you've put on there. Right now, you've got some great indie-folk playing. On what, if any, level does music take part in influencing your style or help you with your creative process in here?

Staci - You know, with the store really first being established in my minds-eye in France, Carla Bruni is one of my favs. I like folk music, but the playlist goes from folk music to Jay-Z. I mean, I'm all over the board. We're also a Christian business, so a lot of times you'll hear some folksy Christian music in the background for inspiration... and also, hoping there's an anointing on the shop. Who knows what you're gonna hear in here! In a minute, Jay-Z is gonna pump through and change your entire experience.

Annalise, EJS - I love that! One second, some section filled with deco-nouveau cut glass, mirrored lamps with ivory-toned shades and plush velvet seties is perfect for a countryside shabby-chic cottage, and a moment later you can see the same combination of pieces as a staged vignette for a hip hop video with some giant diamond on the table.

Staci - Very true!

It's funny you mentioned the website though. My husband and I were looking for a great French song. We went online and purchased this French song, which was kind of cool and made us think of the South of France. So many people have contacted me and they just are like, "WHO is that playing on your website?!" but it just was a song we found and purchased online.

Annalise, EJS - so, I guess the last thing is, can you give us your website address?

Weekend Getaway, An Anniversary: from Carmel to San Simeon back to LA again

The guy and I celebrated our two year anniversary this past weekend with a trip up the coast to Big Sur. Words can't describe how wonderful it all was, but pictures tend to capture the essence of every moment with fragments of embedded emotions...

As we happened on the first vineyards along the way, I sent off a final tweet and checked out of instant-response-land.

The storms were following quickly behind. As the setting sun called to us in the distance, we kept our pace.

Tracks made, but no travelers in sight.

I spotted a lone pony watching us from a small corral just off the roadside.

We didn't arrive until late in the evening. The rain had taken to falling again and we rushed into our warm woodsy cabin for some shut-eye. The next morning, dew-drops and bright ferns greeted us into a world far from wifi.

Even foreign phone booths were laid to rest in the deep valleys of our escape.

Far away, the sound of cars sweeping past melded with the roaring waves and we were quick to give up on deciphering between the two.

...and in the middle of lush green forests and creamy cool waters...

We found fence posts worth tiptoeing across,

miniature bouquets dusted with grace,

rocks for jumping from one to another, paint brushes with stencils built in and shady paths to kingdoms of vines.

On a cliff's edge we held close, not for safety but to moments carrying future memories.

In meadows, we lie low as sweet grasses blush our cheeks.

Running, jumping and dancing in the afternoon light.

Offerings, conversation, new friends and blessings.

Just Love.

Sunbathing and precious observation.

One of our never-fails-to-happen stumblings across magic, a reason to hike, swim and wander.

A last and lengthy stop at the Hearst Castle for daydreaming...

...and to capture all that was and is meant to be.

A {Stylishly} Classic Tale of Giving

This morning I received a text from my mom... simply, a photo of a pair of ballerina flats.

Now, to preface this, for Christmas she bought me a pair of sequined Toms. I L.O.V.E. Toms, not only because the product line represents and benefits an incredible cause, also because these shoes are really comfy, stylish and durable.

Yes, I do swear by stilettos, wedges, platforms, springolators, anything that makes me four to six inches taller and my legs look like they were carved by a master artisan. However, Toms has relaxed-chic down to a science and on a day after an intense yoga class or maybe I have plans with a few vertically challenged pals who appreciate an eye-level hangout, Toms are my go-to shoe... as of 3 pair ago.

So, back to the preface... when I opened my new sparkling kicks, I followed up my squeal of utter happiness with the announcement that Toms was putting out a line of ballerina flats at Nordy's. To this, Mom responded with her own shriek of excitement and marked her calendar "To Shop".

Back to the main plot:
The photo I received was of a pair of these long-awaited, sweet-spot, walkable-five-star-hotel for your feet slippers. Grey-on-grey leopard print adorableness. The text that followed:

Mom:
Should I offer these to your cousin? You and she wear the same size, and I accidentally got a half-size too small, so... ???

Me:
WANT!

Mom:
You are SOOO my daughter. LOL.

Yep, Mom knows hip texting lingo, and it doesn't stop at the ever-so-simple "LOL".

Anyhow, now I'm eagerly awaiting a package from the Lone Star State filled with the goodness that is this pair of stylish princess prancers.

Just wondering, do you have a love for the Toms? Have you ogled the ballerina collection? Have you started stocking up? You know, your tootsies like to look sexy in the summer too -- even on a lazy afternoon back-porch barbeque kind of day.

if you're wanting to really kick Project: Bikini Body into full gear, keep reading.

Healthy eating habits and hormone balancing-skin revitalizing treatments are a great start and, for some, are just enough to set the tone for long-awaited results that you were slightly shy of seeing in the past. However, some of us want and/or need an extra boost -- just one more shot of assistance to keep the ball from slowing down mid-lane. You want that lucky strike? You gotta bowl hard!

Sporting for a Win

walking WITHOUT the extra weight

You don't have to join the gym. You don't have to be an exercise addict. You even don't have to have a strict and severe regime. Believe it or not, toning up to melt down doesn't require a pricey personal trainer or hours upon hours of strenuous exercise. All you need is an ounce of will-power and a spoonful of patience.

When you wake up in the morning, you may want to roll over and hope for dreamland to welcome you back in or book it to the coffee maker for a helping hand in starting the day bright-eyed & bushy-tailed. I've got a better suggestion. Try these toe-tappers on for size.

Throw on a well-fitting sports bra (better yet, you may have already been sleeping in one -- which puts the girls in their proper place amidst that rolling over and stomach-sleeping and fends of the dreaded "downward pull" of age... just ask any OB Gyn or Reconstructive Surgeon). Now, grab those trainers (that you've so diligently kept at the foot of the bed, right?) and head to an open space in your house with this little list.

Take a few deep breaths, roll your shoulders back and down, shake out the kinks AND...

Start with forty (40) jumping jacks -

Be sure to bend your knees when you land & slightly rotate your knees outward from the hips so as to not torque the tendons inside.

Immediately follow with ten (10) squat jumps -

With weight in your heels, sit your hips back & down only as far as you can without straining your knees (healthy joints can aim for 90 degrees), then spring up into a nearly straight-legged jump with pointed toes; land gently with soft knees and repeat.

Hit the deck for fifteen (15) pushups -

Keep your gaze focused a few inches in front out in front of your fingertips and lower your chest toward the floor by bending your elbows near to 90 degrees; Imagine a plumb line from the crown of your head to your heels - keeping your back flat, your stomach tight (but not "sucked-up") and your buttocks squeezed to support your lower back; It's ok to perform these from your knees, but then the plumb line should flow from crown to patella.

Now flip onto your back for twenty (20) crunches -

With knees bent, thighs glued together (to create more core stability) & feet firmly planted on the floor, tuck your chin to your chest and keep it there throughout the entire set so that you aren't lifting from your neck; with your elbows wide and your hands behind your head (touch your fingertips to your head and keep your hands rounded in the shape they would take to cradle grapefruits; lift your shoulders off the floor by creating a "V" with your middle-abdomen - just 2 inches above your navel; slowly lower, repeat.

Also, DO NOT arch your back or flare open your ribs in the lower/starting position... that action creates a pendulum effect with the exercise and lessens the amount of effort your abs are putting into the movement - AKA, cheating.

Flapjack yourself again & perform twenty (20) Mountain Climbers -

Remember that pushup position? Resume it (or perform it full-length this time). Now, if you aren't sure about these, start off slowly. Bring your right knee to your chest & tap that toe to the floor just beneath your waistline. Return to starting position and repeat with the left leg. Remember to keep the back straight and not lift the hips into the air. That's one rep. You're going for 20. You can eventually lead up to doing this at a fast pace, jumping the legs back and forth, but KEEP THE HIPS in line with the head and feet, abs tight.

Hold that final pushup position for thirty (30) seconds (also known as a "Plank") -

Keep the buttocks tight & mid-back NOT lifted, NOT swayed or sunken.

Stand up, Walk it off for thirty (30) seconds, REPEAT THE CIRCUIT

After two times through this routine, give yourself about twenty minutes before breakfast. In the meantime, slowly drink an 8-16 ounce glass of water and hit the showers.

Try sticking to this at least three mornings out of the work week. Spread it out, for example -

Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Starting with a short fast-paced workout like this sets your metabolism to high-gear for the day. Waiting (as close to exactly, but no more than) twenty minutes before eating allows your blood flow to slow back down just enough for your muscles (i.e. your stomach - yep, it's a muscle) to not be on consumption hyper-drive but in efficiency mode. This means that your stomach has begun contracting, thus, creating gastric juices for digestion. Due to that glass of H2O, you're hungry but not starving. Stick to those healthy eating habits you began cultivating last week and you're now putting out more calories than you're taking in. Plus, eating slow and mindfully lets your stomach tell YOU when it's satisfied.

Already have a workout routine? Great! This will simply improve your performance in that practice.

Find yourself a little more hungry throughout the day after starting this routine? Allow yourself that 5th or 6th snack/meal. You shouldn't be starved, but you should be mindfully adjusting to a higher metabolism without giving into guilt-ridden cravings that will undermine your hard work.

NOW... for something that we must address -

We've reached mid-month and if she hasn't come already, your mean Aunt Flo might be making her regularly scheduled visit soon. With that said, here's a few tips on how to power through and not be derailed by the redhead's arrival:

When the cravings come, IGNORE THEM... kind of. Keep some dark chocolate squares around and nibble sparingly. When we think we're craving fatty foods, our body is actually signaling us to give it some pain relief. I know, duh. But you can get natural analgesics from red fruit (strawberries and cherries) and dark chocolate. Believe me, you WILL get the same satisfaction from these sources that you would an order of fries, but without the guilt. Our fast food chain society has blanketed the sweets nature provides with addicting additives and preservatives in drive-thru quick fix form. Unfortunately, that's what has brought us to this point wherein we find ourselves at war with our genetics. Ever read an article spotlighting a celeb that "eats cheeseburgers and pizza all day without a care"? Of course you have. Well, she's either lying or her digestive tract is building a grudge made of all the heavy oils she's layering up inside... and we know what happens when we hold a grudge too long right? Eventually, we explode in an all-out fit of pent-up rage. Your organs do that too, in the form of illness. One of my favorite healthy stars, Anna Paquin, addresses the reality of her fit eating style in the June 2010 Self Magazine cover issue:

I'm really careful about what I eat, and I work out a lot. It's not like this is an accident. I'm sure, no matter what your genetics, everyone can be out of shape. And I don't want to be one of those actresses who says, "yeah, I eat cheese burgers all the time." Because I don't. I live my life, but I'm really careful about taking care of myself. If I don't take care of myself, in the sense of not also nourishing myself, I don't do the kind of work that I'm proud of.

It's the "Well-what-would-you-eat-if-you-were-being-photographed-in-a-bikini-tomorrow?" diet. I mean, it's not anything wildly specific. I eat a lot of vegetables. I eat a lot fruit. I don't eat fast food ever. I don't eat a lot of dessert. I don't eat a lot of cr**. As I get older, I'm getting better about taking care of myself without depriving myself. It's not a good way to live. It's not a good way to work. It's about finding balance and learning how to feed your body so it'll do what you need it to do. It's being a little more relaxed about the way you take care of yourself. It's a good thing.

Got a nasty case of the cramps screaming at you to curl up into a ball? Try a little yoga and body-intuition to ease the pain. A position called Sukhasana or "Easy Pose" is great for opening up the channels to release spasms in your stressed lower abdomen. It's as simple as sitting upright in a cross-legged position (maybe even put a few pillows evenly under your hips and allow the legs to angle toward the floor to open up the joint). Close your eyes, breathe slowly and focus your breath into the painful area. You can literally mentally take charge of your body's mechanics by sending a visual message to your circulatory system. When you visualize blood flow cradling your reproductive system in warm, soothing healing white blood cells and nourishing red ones, your body will mind it's mentor and do exactly that. Taking in fresh, clean air via deep breaths during your meditation will expand those blood cells with oxygen and give them more strength to do your bidding. {Also, don't be afraid to tell your fitness instructor that you've got your monthly visitor. He or she should be able to modify your exercises to reduce pain and enhance relief. Note that yoga inversions (i.e. going upside down) are not suitable for this time of the month.}

TIP: Try lying on your left side with moist heat applied to the right. If pain persists after twenty minutes, try the other side. Your flow is only coming from one ovary. Once you can pinpoint which one it is by relief gained from setting that organ on top rather than squished beneath the other, you'll find the heat will reduce cramping at a greater rate and have you back in action in no time at all. Plus, moist heat gains access to your system faster than a dry heating pad because we are aqueous and our bodies welcome moisture.

Finally, stick to your regimen! Although exercising may be the last thing you want to do when you're in a world of hurt and mentally bogged down by PMS, movement increases blood flow and oxygen intake. Those two things in combination, as mentioned above, rush pain relief to the targeted area. The plus is that you'll feel pretty darn great about having stuck to your guns and after the bloating subsides, you'll see that your body has continued to respond rewardingly.

I, unfortunately, don’t have much free time. I am a 42 year old single mum. My 12 year old son is great, but those teenage wants and woes are creeping up.

I have one younger sibling, a brother, who lives about an hour away in the same town as our parents and where we spent our youth. My father has suffered from Alzheimer’s for 4 years now and is entirely dependent. As such, I spend most weekends back home helping out since my mother is ill also.

In the few spare moments I find, I love catching up with my girlfriends over coffee.

Last on this mini-profile roundup, but certainly not least: I'm a huge supporter of the Red Noses Organization, whose mission is to bring joy to children hospitalized with severe or terminal illness.

Now, for the Goods

I'm not your classic case of a fashion addict. I mostly wear flats, reserving heels for meetings and formal occasions. I do daydream about Marc Jacobs and Salvatore Ferragamo ballerina slippers on occasion.

Although I throw together a mean power suit on the weekdays via a well-honed collection of flowy trousers and sleek blazers, I truly am a laid back gal and long for denim and knit jersey weekends.

Where I prefer to splurge is in the fragrance department. Nothing makes me feel sexier or prettier than the right scent. I have AT LEAST ten in my collection at present.

From The Green Room: The Good Witch of the East... An Evening With Emily Keaty

I have known Emily since the 9th grade, and she has always been in the clouds. Both very different from the archetypal student at our high school (Marlborough School for Girls), Emily and I clicked immediately in English class. Even then she was giving tips on how to improve consciousness and heath through a controversial Raw Food Diet called GeneFit -- an instinctive approach to nutrition... basically eating like a bear in the wild :)

Emily has spent the last year fine-tuning a remodel and doing the interior design herself. She is one for a bargain and also tries to keep it green. The coffee table is a reclaimed antique ship door from an old vessel. There are flea market finds a-plenty in her dwelling-- from room dividing bookshelves, to vintage cameras. She also scored a bunch of Sheepskins which act as a great accent to almost any room.

DIET is not the dirty word we've all been taught to fear from the depth of our beings.

DIET: (per merriam-webster.com)

a : food and drink regularly provided or consumed

b : habitual nourishment

Eating and drinking 5-6 small meals throughout the day is a great way to maintain energy and nourishment without overfilling.

Now, although I have been certified as a wellness instructor, Yoga, Pilates, group and private exercise teacher with a bagful of specializations, I do not claim to be a nutritionist. Every individual should consult a licensed nutritionist and/or his or her general physician regarding dietary intake. The following serves merely as an example of healthy intake based on the average well man or woman.

Serving size: Think of the palm of your hand (fingers not included) as a measuring assistant. A serving of anything should be the size of YOUR palm in circumference and depth. Your fist is about the size of your stomach. If you fill it with something the size of your palm, then it's about halfway full. So, you can't exactly fill your plate with 5+ things the size of your palm.

If you're having tapas, pick one of each. If you're having pasta, the rule is pretty clear. A burger - maybe only eat the bottom half of the bun with the patty & a few fixin's. Salads are tricky. Just because it's green doesn't mean it needs to be loaded with a million toppings to make up for flavor. Pick a dressing, it doesn't have to be low-cal, but follow the serving guide on the label (usually about 1-2 Tablespoons). Add fruit and pine nuts OR tomatoes, avocado & cucumber. The toppings are where the palm rule comes in handy.

Chew slowly. Sit down to ENJOY your meals and try to take delight in each savory bite. Eat only until you feel satisfied. That's the moment right before you take that last bite... the one you KNOW will send you into food-coma oblivion. Stop there, even if there's still food on the plate.
It's OK. Really.

Content: I can't tell you what to eat, but I can outline a day in my dietary life as a possible outline for yours.

Breakfast

8 oz glass of water to start.

1 cup of hot green tea, plain

1 cup of oats w/ warm water, a teaspoon of honey and a dash of cinnamon

1 medium orange and a slice of gluten-free plain toast

Snack

Depending on what I had for breakfast, I'll often fill this spot with the other choice.

Lunch

8 oz glass of water to start.

1 cup of hot or cold black tea, plain

1/4-1/2 cup of Garbanzo Bean salad w/ 1/4 of an avocado sliced on the side

Grilled Sockeye Salmon and a handful of Spinach lightly salted

Snack

I like fruit for snacks in the afternoon because the natural sugar gives me a little spark of energy.

Usually, a banana and a small handful of almonds.

Dinner

8 oz glass of water to start

Drink your Antioxidants!
Grown up gals: 1 glass of red wine, Young un's: 100% Cranberry Juice half diluted w/ water

Kale lightly sauteed with fresh garlic & EVOO

AND a cup of pure Butternut Squash soup topped with a dollop of sour cream

Evening

1 cup of hot Chamomile tea with 1 teaspoon of honey

It's light and you'll see that I don't eat a lot of protein, mostly because my body doesn't digest it properly and the doctors have said to limit my intake. On weekends, I do enjoy an omelette in the mornings.

I definitely like to expand my horizons when out to eat... but, again, it all comes down to portion control. You can eat ANYTHING you want as long as you watch your portions and you don't have an allergy to that food.

A great way to determine if you have a food allergy is to engage in a food elimination/reintroduction diet. This is definitely something to consult with your physician. In the end, I personally found that certain fruits containing natural molds are not something I can enjoy regularly as well as large amounts of yeasty foods and those with high sugar contents. Another way to figure out what may be holding you back from the body you want is to take a look at the foods you eat most. What do you crave regularly? If it's bready foods like pasta, panini, can't live without croutons on your salad, biscotti and cupcakes, then you may have a sugar or wheat allergy. Then, a slight elimination/reintroduction diet may help you decipher if it's one or both.

When we're allergic to foods or ingredients, it doesn't necessarily dictate a no-go zone on that particular item. What you may find is when you stop eating that particular food or ingredient for a week or so, the weight begins to melt off!

We often develop cravings for and addictions to our allergies because the remnants of that food's culture are struggling to survive in a hostile environment -- our immune system. As our body attempts to build more and more resistance to the unwanted ingredient, the antihistamines are signaling us to "eat more so we can flourish". This is similar to when you have an ant bite or poison ivy. Your body's natural defense system is signaling you to scratch and remove what it is pushing to the surface... but you don't, because as we all know scratching leads to spreading. So why would you "scratch" that "itch" in your digestive tract if it's only going to produce more unwanted weight?

You've read and heard it a thousand times. Water clears your skin. It's true! H2O clears our system and thus clears every organ that system operates. Your skin is your largest organ, baby.

Common Skin Issue
Agonizing over unsightly bumps on the back of your arms and throat? It may be time to visit the dermatologist. A condition called Keratosis Pilaris is a genetic predisposition that causes your hair follicles to plug up and form those little bumps, but it is also related to your diet. When you clean up your diet and reduce sugar and preservative intake, your skin will respond gloriously. However, if you are diagnosed with KP, try adding fennel to your seasoning list... grind it up to a fine powder, mix it in with your favorite cold cream and massage it in as a mask for five minutes before rinsing with warm water, cleansing as usual and patting with cool water to close pores.

Now, it's taken me a while to come up with this simply due to the fact that -- and please don't be too upset -- hourglass girls can wear ANYTHING! You're curvy up top and down below with just the right amount of cinch in the middle. There's no need to fret over Spring brights or bold patterns because your figure accommodates it all.

Now, I hear you saying "Yes, but I'm a little larger or smaller than I'd like to be." Well, phooey! You still have the figure for anything. It's just a matter of buying the right size. Seriously. The biggest mistake I've seen any girl of any figure type make is buying too big to cover up unwanted weight or too small to accentuate your curves. You don't want to look like a you're wearing a circus tent or create bulges in places you didn't have them before. Both are unflattering. Girl, you can wear hipsters or high-waists, crop-tops and tunics, tea-length, maxi & mini. When you're genetically blessed with a Monroe-esque physique, you owe it to yourself above all to do right by your curves.

If I can leave you with one solid piece of advice around your figure, it's that if/when you run into the conundrum of a pair of pants that SHOULD cinch as a high-waist but your hips get in the way... suck it up and buy the next size up -- or TWO. Then head to the tailor & have the waist taken in. Rip out the size tag if it does a number on your ego, but remember that a good fit means a good look and that trumps a printed band-size any day!

I'm here to offer you my best advice for looking FAB poolside, sunning on the beach or sitting on your own little terrace enjoying the warm weather WITHOUT repeatedly looking down to see if your bod is tucked away in all the right places... simply for your own peace of mind.

We want to love how we look and how we feel about ourselves. That doesn't mean we need to be a size zero and have our measurements meet in comparison with those of our favourite bombshell icons.

What it does mean is that we need to put a little sparkle on it and embrace the way we were put on this Earth.
So here it goes: Part I of your guide to a happy bare-it-(nearly)-all summer lovin' good time!

Enviable Baby Soft Skin

with an added dose of healthy hormone production

If you can set aside some time to take a bubble bath or a steamy shower for achy muscles, then you can do this number.

Choose one day a week. I prefer Sunday evenings as it's a perfect time to resurface tired skin from a long weekend and replenish my energy for the week ahead

You'll need to invest in the following items:

Dry Brush -

Exfoliating Gloves -

Micro-Scrub -

Body Oil -

Step 1:

Take a deep breath & commit to yourself that this journey is one you have chosen and one you will see through to the finish.

Step 2:

Take another breather and strip down to your birthday suit.

Step 3:

Grab that dry brush and take a seat...

Starting at the bottoms of your feet, tips of your toes/ pad of your foot, begin brushing in a micro-circular motion (about five circles). Slowly move the brush to the center of your foot and repeat. You'll repeat this motion at your heel, back of your ankle, incrementally up the back of your calve, knee, thigh and buttock.

Repeat that process on the front of your leg from the tops of your toes up to where your thigh meets your torso. Don't forget to sweep in from the outsides of your stems to cover every inch of skin.

Again on the other leg.

Once you've done both legs, sweep the brush up from the tip of the bottom of your foot to the small of your back and begin the process again from that point to the center of your upper back (where your heart is) -- making those circles go from the outer edge of your body inward toward your spine.

Repeat on the opposite leg/side. --- AHEM: How helpful is that long handle on the brush now?!

You guessed it! Repeat this process on the front side. When you get to your waist, be sure to sweep from the sides inward. When you reach your breasts, softly comb the brush under & over toward your heart.

Last, but not least... repeat this process from your inner wrist to your underarm with a final sweep towards your heart.

Again, from the top of your wrist, up to your shoulder -- now sweep over your shoulder blade towards your heart on the back 5x and then over your clavicle (collar bone) toward that little notch at the center of your throat 5x. Also, sweep up from your heart and the outer edges of your upper chest toward that same little spot.

This notch is where your thyroid lies. Your thyroid is a tiny gland that controls the production of every single hormone in your body. When stimulated by dry brushing inward from your extremities, this little guy gets a big return on all the hard work he's put out and resets to properly manage your circulation = higher metabolism (not to mention an all-over natural glow from that increased blood flow you just promoted)!

PHEW!

It's work, I know, but once you get the hang of this practice, you'll not only bask in the benefits -- you'll also begin looking forward to your weekly sloughing and re-energizing regimen.

Ready to keep going? Of course you are.

Get that tub filled with warm water or crank up the shower to a comfortable steamy temp... and take a few sips of water because it's about to get even hotter!

TIP: For beginners, a bath is really the best way to go. Although we're all used to the balancing act in the shower while shaving our gams, the increased circulation you're experiencing combined with the heat of the water can give you a bit of the spins. If you only have a shower, adjust the head away from direct contact with your skin and take a seat on the floor inside.

Continuing on, you'll need your exfoliating gloves and your micro-scrub. I really like Bliss Spa's Body Buff because it contains a lathering agent - so you're sudsing up in the process. Try to stay away from anything too abrasive -- products that list crushed fruit or nut shells in the ingredients. These can tear your capillaries and leave unpleasant little red marks on your skin (keep this in mind when you're buying facial exfoliants as well).

Alright, so we're in the bath/shower and taking a load off from our dry brushing workout. Now, it's time to really get to know every inch of your skin. FYI, this is also a great time to perform your self breast exam. You'll find that this part of the process allows you to get in touch with every surface of your body and become more in tune with the messages and signals your body outputs that often go unnoticed when we only observe things on a grand scale.

Get your skin a little damp.

With your gloves on and water-soaked, dip into the scrub and lightly rub a good portion of it between your hands, just enough to share the product on both hands but not over-lathering or diluting the exfoliant.

Here we go! Remember that dry brushing process? Now it's time to repeat it in slightly more detail by gently using your finger tips -- yep, finger tips... NOT the whole glove. Yes, you are here to exfoliate, but you're also on a mission to address your skin on a cellular level. Although your fingers tips aren't quite capable of physically micro-scoping your skin, keep in mind that under a medical lens you are a series of billions upon billions of cells simple engaging in the society known as your body. That can be a bit eerie when you think about it, but for now focus on tending to your flock. Those little puppies need your love, they need to be cleaned and encouraged to reproduce so that your "society" continues to flourish. When you address your body at a cellular level, you begin to sympathize with the process going on - seemingly effortlessly - right under your nose! -- PS: remember to re-dip in the scrub as often as necessary to replenish the exfoliant as it suds up in the rub.

Once you've completed this process - I also like to use the opportunity to get a super close shave while the hair follicles are stimulated and pores are open - it's time to rinse.

You've kept the heat going from the shower for a few reasons.

1) While your oil production is up from the dry-brushing, you want to keep your skin soft and moist for scrubbing so that the rub feels like a nice all over scratching-that-impossible-itch.

2) You're in the process of upping your blood flow, and heat promotes that three-fold when combined with the super-exfoliation and circular heart/ thyroid aiming direction of your scrubbing.

3) You're about to take your thyroid on a joy ride that will reset it to "OPTIMUM".

After rinsing, hang out in the water and slowly lower the temp. Do this incrementally, allowing your body to adjust to the cooler temperatures. If you absolutely cannot handle going all the way down to COLD, then slowly take it to LUKEWARM and call it a day.

(I suggest patting your skin dry rather than rubbing with your towel as your skin is in a pretty smooth state already and if it could talk, it would ask you to be gentle so it could hang on to all that natural moisture it just produced with the pampering you provided)

It's time to put that oil to use.

- if you have a nut allergy, you can reach for a different oil or your favourite lotion. just keep in mind that it's important to use something natural and fragrance free while your pores are open -- fragrances will burn a bit and if you shaved, will leave razor burn bumps in place of those freshly cleaned pores -

It's up to you how you apply it. If you ask me, the go-to micro circular motion is the best. However, a sweeping motion is just fine as long as you still start at the tips and work in towards the heart & thyroid.

This is your opportunity to touch on any last dry spots -- especially the bottoms of your feet -- and really pay attention to detail.

TIP: I like to put on a thick pair of socks or terrycloth slippers immediately after moisturizing my tootsies... and since your face got a pore-clearing steam, you might want to apply a gentle toner and follow up with your favourite moisturizer.

Jane "Janey" Bates is our Gal Saturday, and a fair lady she be.

Married and cuddled up in her comfy North Yorkshire, UK abode, Janey's passions are quite varied. She's a death-defying motorcycling sports fanatic and cares for children as a qualified nursery nurse, all while making the ends meet as an accountant for an Energy Consulting Firm -- The Green Room is getting a double dose of UK goodness from this one.

I love my family, friends and animals and I consider myself to have the best of all three.

I’m mad for music, cooking and the environment. The GreenRoom will be pleased to hear we already have a composter -- recycling is a must (husband rolls eyes at the soggy washed cardboard food packaging that he finds on the draining board) -- and our newest gadget is an Eco Shower Drop. You calibrate it with your shower & it sounds an alarm when you have used a certain amount of water, which is great for me because I can stand in the shower for ages daydreaming!

I like reading about fashion -- what’s in, what the stars and style-aficionados are wearing. With the big 4.0. fast approaching, my wardrobe is most definitely classic-meets-casual.

I gravitate towards versatile pieces, those that can be dressed up as well as paired with cozy attire on a rainy day.

The floral blouse is from Gap. I have worn it over the cami (also Gap) with black trousers for an elegant evening wedding 'do, and only a few weeks later, matched it up with jeans and a little black cardi for a casual holiday gathering.

The pink hoodie with the ribbon (Lipsy, London) gives me quite a bit of use for stylishly casual outings... popping in to see friends or lazy day strolls to share a meal with the folks.

Ahhh, the shoes -- insert husband groaning as I meander toward the Jimmy Choo’s in department stores. I'm a thrifty kinda girl though, and these dandies are actually members of the "Able" family -- comfortAble, affordAble Clarks -- and they make me feel a like million dollars.

In the words of Coco Chanel “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future” – extreme, perhaps, but I like it. I have 3 on the go at the moment, all by Valentino: 'Very Valentino', 'Rock & Rose Couture' and 'Valentina'.

The sunnies are Chanel. When I wear them all the world is rosey!

My favourite bracelet is in the picture too. It was a bridesmaid gift. Sparkly, pink & hearts: that’s me to a tee. I’m like a magpie when any of these surface through the transparent glaze of shop windows.

Janey joins in the Race for Life yearly. For those not familiar with RFL, it's a 5k run/walk for the ladies that raises money for Cancer Research in the UK.

A friend and I have raised over £1,000 so far and it’s great fun. It must be quite a sight seeing a load of women, dressed in pink (some in costume and fairy wings) belting around a racecourse!

She's the real deal.

Jane Bates is living life as right as rain, saving lives and the planet as a whole, styling her world in shades of pink... and loving every minute of it.
