Lee Daniels’ highly-anticipated film “The Butler,” upset some people when a photograph of Mariah Carey playing the role of a field slave went viral. Daniels’ movie also features the character Eugene Allen (Forest Whitaker).
The picture caught a barrage of flak from those on social media who felt that anyone with a complexion like Mariah’s wouldn’t actually have to work in the field, therefore deeming the illustration inaccurate.

Those with fair skin like hers were usually used as house slaves. Fans took to Twitter to express a desire to see a more dark-skinned woman in the place of Mariah Carey in the movie.

One critic tweeted “She wouldn’t even be a house slave, she could pass as white,” and another posted “Zoe Saldana is Nina Simone and Mariah Carey is in the fields taking good slave acting jobs from dark-skinned people.”

Daniels’ choice to cast Mariah Carey in this particular role raises the question in some folks’ mind about whether he took the time to gather historical facts.

Others believe that the media has brain washed us into believing that slaves were always separated by the tone of their skin which wasn’t always the case. Slaves with light skin weren’t always granted immunity from picking in the field just the same as all dark-skinned slaves weren’t banned from working in the house.

Yes there were many cases where a slave bearing lighter skin was a result of a slave owner having his way sexually with one of the female slaves. In this case more often than not the children were still confined to slavery but were used as house slaves because of their blood relation with their owner.

Even in today’s society where we have an African-American president, we still find ourselves having the debate on colorism. From Zoe Saldana’s playing Nino Simone or Mariah casted as a field slave, it’s doubtful we will ever really stop this never-ending argument.

Tomorrow (June 18) marks the biggest hip-hop release date of the year to date, with Kanye West’s Yeezus, J. Cole’s Born Sinner, Mac Miller’s Watching Movies WIth The Sound Off, and Statik Selektah’s Extended Play all getting a ton of buzz, setting up a sales showdown that should rival any that have battled in the past half-decade.
The buildup to the date has been a long time in the making, with Statik announcing his release date back in March, and J. Cole unveiling in early April that his sophomore album would drop June 25th. Mac Miller tweeted his June 18th date on May 2nd, which doubled as the same day that Kanye West cryptically tweeted “JUNE EIGHTEEN.”

What followed was eerily similar to an event that consumed the hip-hop world nearly six years ago—J. Cole, feeling the pressure of an impending Kanye-inspired cultural event, moved his release date up a week to directly compete with Yeezus.

It was a move that Kanye had used in 2007, bumping up the date of his third album, Graduation, to September 11th in order to go head-to-head with the then-reigning king of New York 50 Cent’s third offering, Curtis. It was a showdown that sparked commentary and (seemingly) light-hearted smack talk from both sides, even earning a face-to-face cover of Rolling Stone and causing 50 to famously say that if Kanye outsold him, he’d retire from rap.

The rest, of course, is history—Kanye outsold 50, eventually winning Best Rap Album at the 2008 Grammys, and 50 didn’t retire, but hasn’t totally been the same since.

Now, with both Yeezus and J. Cole’s Born Sinner expecting big debuts—and with both having already leaked to the public—we take a look at both competitions, determine whether or not Born Sinner can emulate Kanye and pull the upset on Yeezus, and decide once and for all: who will be the King of June 18?

Green's first 23 3-pointers set an NBA record for most 3s made during an NBA Finals, and he's still got at least one more game to go — or, if you're a hopeful Miami Heat backer, two more — to put the record further out of the next man's reach. In a series that's seen wild shifts in momentum, execution, narrative and results from game to game, Green's scintillating shooting has been one constant throughout — he's been so locked in from beyond the arc that his 24-point, 6-for-10-from-deep shooting performance in San Antonio's Game 5 win actually dropped his 3-point percentage for the series, from 67.9 percent (19 for 28) headed into Game 5 to 65.8 percent (25 for 38) afterward. (What a slacker.)

To hear Green tell it, his historic flow is merely the outgrowth of being very fortunate and having three All-World teammates, with Tim Duncan drawing Miami attention on the interior and gifted facilitators Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili finding him on the perimeter.

"I've been getting lucky," Green said after the game. "I was moving around a lot. Our transition helps us, our pace. Tony penetrating and Manu penetrating, making the defense collapse is the reason why I've been getting open. Luckily, a couple have dropped for me."

"Right now, everything is working well for me," he said. "I'm feeling truly blessed right now."
Parker, for his part, seems shocked that the blessings haven't gone bye-bye yet.
"I can't believe he's still open at this moment of this series," Parker said after bouncing back from a quiet Game 4 second half to score a game-high 26 points on 10 for 14 shooting in Game 5. "They are still trapping me and doubling Timmy, and Danny is wide open. He's shooting the ball well — if you are going to leave Danny wide open, he's going to make threes."

As Erik Spoelstra has learned, much to the Heat coach's chagrin.

"He's getting some open looks, and he's making some contested looks," Spoelstra said after a Game 5 loss in which his Heat were repeatedly picked apart and beaten by excellent San Antonio ball movement. "But the open looks are the ones that are killing us."
Green thinks Parker and Spoelstra might be overstating things just a bit — "I don't think many of my shots are that wide open" — but didn't necessarily say they were wrong.
"Some of [the looks], yeah, I'm surprised," Green said, before immediately returning to crediting his teammates.

The Heat barely stopped anything on Sunday, as San Antonio shot 60 percent from the floor en route to 114 points, the fourth-highest total Miami's given up this season and the second-most in a non-overtime affair. (They gave up 116 to the Denver Nuggets back in November, but they won that game.) And while the evening's big story was Ginobili turning back the clock with a performance for the ages, Green's hellacious rhythm might be setting the stage for one of the more unlikely stories in recent NBA history: Danny Green, NBA Finals MVP, which would make him the first second-round pick to win the award since Dennis Johnson in 1979.

Chad Johnson is going home from jail today, one week after a Florida judge sentenced him to 30 days behind bars after he slapped his male lawyer on the rear during court.
Johnson reportedly appeared in front of Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh again this morning, in handcuffs. Reports say that the judge blasted him again for his disrespectful behavior in front of her.

Then she agreed to release him from jail, but added a month to his probation time.

"I just wanted to apologize for disrespecting the court last time," Johnson told the judge. "I apologize. I did have time to reflect on the mistakes I made in this courtroom."

Last Monday Johnson, formerly known as Ochocinco, stood in front of McHugh for a recent probation violation in the domestic violence case concerning ex-wife Evelyn Lozada.

He's on probation after pleading no contest to head-butting reality TV star Lozada during an altercation last August.

When McHugh asked Johnson if he was satisfied with his lawyer, Adam Swickle, Johnson playfully reached out and slapped his lawyer’s butt, which sent the judge into a tizzy.

“I don’t know that you’re taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this?” the judge asked angrily.

“The whole courtroom was laughing. I’m not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn’t a joke.”

Johnson tried to apologize, but McHugh would have none of it, sending Johnson off to jail for 30 days on the probation violation.

Public consensus seemed to be that McHugh had gone overboard with her actions.

In court today, Swickle said that Johnson would fully comply with all the probation conditions and that he even hopes to play football again. The Miami Dolphins cut the six-time Pro Bowler after he was arrested last summer.

"He understands that this is the kind of situation that can derail a person's career," Swickle said today. "We're very confident he will do what he should do."

Apple says it received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests from U.S. law enforcement for customer data for the six months ended in May.
The company, like some other businesses, had asked the U.S government to be able to share how many requests it received related to national security and how it handled them. Those requests were made as part of Prism, the recently revealed highly classified National Security Agency program that seizes records from Internet companies.

Prism appears to do what its name suggests. Like a triangular piece of glass, Prism takes large beams of data and helps the government find discrete, manageable strands of information.

Prism was revealed this month by The Washington Post and Guardian newspapers, and has touched off the latest round in a decade-long debate over what limits to impose on government eavesdropping, which the Obama administration says is essential to keep the nation safe.

Apple Inc. said that between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts or devices were specified in data requests between Dec. 1, 2012, and May 31 from federal, state and local authorities and included both criminal investigations and national security matters.

It said that the most common form of request came from police investigating robberies and other crimes, searching for missing children, trying to locate a patient with Alzheimer's disease, or hoping to prevent a suicide.

The company also made clear how much access the government has.

"We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer content must get a court order," Apple said in a statement on its website.

Apple explained that its legal team evaluates each request and that it delivers "the narrowest possible set of information to the authorities" when deemed appropriate. The company said that it has refused some requests in the past.

Facebook Inc. has said that it received between 9,000 and 10,000 requests for data from all government agencies in the second half of last year. The social media company said fewer than 19,000 users were targeted.

Apple's stock rose $3.36 to $433.41 in premarket trading on Monday.

Tawanna recently filed legal documents stating that Allen received permission to take their children --ages 3 to 16-- on a five-day vacation in Charlotte, NC beginning on May 22, but he never returned them on the agreed date of May 26.

According to Tawanna, she tried to set up the exchange on June 4, but the fomer Sixers superstar never came to the neutral meeting site.

Tawanna, who has sole legal and primary physical custody of their children, said she is concerned because of her ex-husband's alcohol abuse, which she claims he does around their kids. She even believes that Allen never took the children to Charlotte and is staying with them at a Sheraton hotel in Georgia.

Tawanna suggests that the 11-time all-star should go to prison, as she had attempted to have happened after Allen allegedly owed more than $40,000 to her in child support.

Ex-NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson is currently serving his 30-day jail sentence following a bizarre day in a Florida court that saw his chance at freedom vanish after he slapped his attorney on the rear. Johnson tweeted the following message to followers before he was taken to Broward Country jail.

Former Bengals teammate Terrell Owens has remained friends with Johnson over the years, and Owens recently recapped a visit to Johnson in jail. For Owens, the experience was jarring.

Considering how similar their off-field antics have been in recent years -- we won't even begin to compare their on-field attributes, which aren't close -- it must be interesting for T.O. to see his friend behind bars because of one of the clown-like things he's done.

Owens, like Johnson, says he still wants to play in the NFL. While neither likely will get that chance again, his response to visiting Johnson in prison at least tells us he's going to do whatever he can to make sure the roles aren't reversed one day.
