Saturday was a blast for all the kids as well as Carol and I. We picked up tickets to the Lego KidsFest in Atlanta a few months back securing our time slot to go and play. Even though we read the various reviews online, looked at photos of past events and read up on various blogs…..we weren’t prepared for the total amount of awesome this event had packed inside.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

Setup like a typical convention, Lego had a “section or booth” for each type of Lego that they sold. Everything from the new stuff from the Lego Movie, the Builders Series, Mixels, Lego Friends, Bionicles, Lego Chima, Duplo, Lego City, Star Wars (LOTS of Star Wars), etc….they had everything. There was even a section for Technic and MindStorm but we never found them due to other distractions (OMG SO MANY THINGS TO SEE AND DO). I was so looking forward to building something that I could program and control with my phone that didn’t cost me $300 to play with – maybe next time.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

The various booths were not really the main attractions. Each booth area was surrounded by building areas either related to a particular type of Lego or a blend of several. We got lost in each one building our creations that would be put on display for the rest of the event. We got sidetracked watching the various family competitions to create and build something unique out of a box of mixed blocks in a set period of time. It was fascinating to see what people can dream up quickly and under pressure with little plastic bits. One competition was to build a bridge that spanned about two feet. After the building was done in a fifteen minute period the bridges were set between two chairs and slowly loaded with weight. Some instantly broke apart and collapsed into tear stained pieces while others were built like real bridges and stayed intact with 10-15 pounds of weight on top before slowly cracking and slipping into the sea of destruction below. Pretty amazing.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

One section that was a lot of fun was a picture mural where everyone received a six inch empty white square and had to come up with a super hero design using 1×1 Lego Blocks. Surprising this was harder than it looked. The kids had some pretty ingenious ides. Jacob created the Batman symbol, Piper made the UniKitty from the Lego Movie, Isaac build a Lego sign with lots of color around it, Violet and Carol designed various star patterns. I tried to be crafty and copy a QR Code that linked back to EternallyChaotic but the square wasn’t quite big enough. Instead of defaulted to ISI – you know because what better super hero symbol than your name

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

Our favorite bit was a HUGE outline of the USA on the floor surrounded by tables and tables full of Legos. The ideas was to work as a team and build something, anything, and place it on the map of creations. We opted for a building with a huge tower on top that held a massive wrecking ball. Violet insisted all day that we needed to build a wrecking ball. We worked diligently, somehow as a team, to construct a massive base building and a tall tower with a crane and wrecking ball swinging from the top. Carol hijacked a massive bucket of bricks, found us a corner on the floor away from the crowds and got us going. As the kids got bored or wanted to do something else we sent them out on scavenger hunts to find various pieces so that they could continue building our awesome tower. When it was done and after a few scary moments of carrying it to the map we set our creation down in Indiana – Georgia was full up and that was option number two.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

After our creation we headed for the sea of bricks, a MASSIVE dump of sharp pointy colored Lego that for some god awful reason we just perfect for playing in, or making Lego Angels, or swimming, or otherwise getting lost within. Crazy people. They even made me get in and enjoy myself. We didn’t get to play long here as our time slot was ending and the best part was still to come.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

Last stop, of course, is the gift shop. How can you not pick up some of the really cool stuff that you have been playing with all day. Wait a minute. I think Lego knew all along that immersing us in their world for half a day, filling our heads full of unmade creations and then strategically placing a HUGE store full of gold plated wonder on the way out would somehow make parting with our cash all that much easier….OH they are so sly The kids eyes were bigger than our bank account but we reeled them into reality and left as happy builders.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

After having seen the Lego Movie now about twenty times (thank you Plex) the stupid song that incessantly gets stuck in your head certainly has it right for this event…..We all certainly thought so.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME….EVERYTHING IS COOL.

The Easter Bunny worked furiously through the night preparing and testing the treasure routes, hiding eggs all along the way. I wonder if there was any confusion this year as there were in years past, hiding eggs but forgetting where the next downstream one was to go. Probably!!!

After a quick breakfast to take up any precious room that might otherwise be used to store extra chocolate, or for the hideout of a recently digested Peep – they never do quite die and I am certain that one day there will be an uprising we will all regret – the treasure hunts began. This year though it was to be a bit tougher for each of the explorers; Jacob was getting older, Isaac was up a good challenge, Violet could now read and Piper was becoming the princess of puzzles.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

Violet drew the short straw and got to go first. She wanted to do hers solo so it was just the lonely adventurer and the out of shape camera man. She finished her run and needed a little prodding to see her goal laid out right in front of her, without it I think she might have started a game of Fireball Island to see if a roll of the dice might land her the next egg and thus another clue.

Next up was Isaac. He wanted the crowd to follow, I think more as a cheering platform than any real type of help. There were plenty of clues thrown out though – I don’t think he needed them. We were surprised by the quick recovery of the small clue hidden in drawers of basement destroying Legos.

Jacob was third and a his pre-teenager mind was a little cocky (when do they start to know everything….) – I think all eleven year-olds are though. His hunt was tough and we had to point every now and then to “help” him along. It certainly is the little things that you think they pay attention to but just never quite sink in when they are needed……Where does mommy keep the extra tooth brushes indeed… He had a few easy ones as well since he sat out a few rounds and did some recon while the rest of us rushed up and down the stairs in search of egg-encased platinum coated chocolate gold.

Piper drew the long straw and got to search last. She had the help of the whole crew and it came in handy for one particular part of the adventure. There is a section of the basement where stuff animals go to when they are no longer wanted – or can no longer fit – in the beds of the CoTC. This is a scary place where no grown-up should ever venture alone. The main man bunny decided to hide an egg here but he thought he was being clever and put the egg in a very particular nesting spot thinking that some major stuff animal digging was on the horizon, a clue from the gallery pointed the adventurer on the right path and she dug out the egg in mere seconds instead of the agonizing minutes (or longer) that were anticipated.

Well Piper was last before Mommy had something extra for me to search for. I think her and that bunny have been….well…..lets just say that there was a little something extra in the basket for “Mommy and Daddy” and daddy certainly had nothing to do with it. Wood, Wood, Wood, indeed !!! Granted the Easter Bunny did think it was necessary that I need an 18″ whoopee cushion. There is way to much fun to be had with that come Monday at work.

The treasure hunters all with baskets in hand were ready to dig in and uncover their spoils. Being dad though I reserved the right to pose them for a few pictures before they started.

Today just so happens to be Grandma’s Birthday.

I had the most surreal dream last night – so surreal and so “real” that I thought I would write about it.

As with all dreams, I have no idea how or when it started, why it included either Adam or myself, why we were there or any other thing that a sane person might ask, such is the way of the dream. We needed to eat and Adam knew of this Thai place that supposedly was awesome. And so it was that we arrived at a market. It was magnificently large on the inside and we walked, following his knowing lead, through isles of food, throngs of people and various arena style combat games happening all around, to this small dingy area in the back where many men were standing around focused on the the ceiling. The ceiling was a conglomeration of metal hung somehow from the ether above but the details of such mattered not. What did matter was that the structure was obviously meant to hang the swords of the patrons while they dined. It was a grid, a large one at that, with various levels above each other. The grid was another game, or more specifically the arena “floor” of a game played where you climbed through the overhead maze and chased another player while maneuvering through the lattice in what could only be described as a real life game of Baduk or “Go”, constantly positioning, gaining ground and leverage, all the while out-thinking your opponent, pushing them to the edge where they must submit or fall. The old man already hanging there had crooked teeth and a knowing smile of one who had put others in their place over and over – the master of the grid. The old man held a U shaped crowbar easily in one hand, a tool that allowed him greater mobility through the twisted metal structure, while hanging from the crook of his knees challenging those below him. Adam and I slowly passed under and through this area, pushing through the crowd that watched as a challenger made his way up into the grid, a match was about to unfold above them as Adam lead us to his favorite spot to dine in the back corner.

The lady behind the counter already knew what Adam wanted and her apprentice, a young mild mannered, softly spoken girl set about preparing it for him – a weird concoction of octopus and noodles covered in a secret sauce. My lunch was a completely different story and I was only if I preferred it hot or not. I preferred “hot” and told her such. The lady behind the counter, this stereotypical short, hunchbacked Thai woman, whose fingernails showed off scenes of the past in their long mesmerizing curls. She scooped various amounts of gruel with a spoon that had seen better days, covered in thick green slime, and decorated the mixtures with an assortment of vegetables held together with what I could only hope were toothpicks. She circled the dish inspecting it from each side, looking for imperfections and found something that did not agree with her superior eye for such things – grabbing a grinder full of what looked like dried death she shaved a minor amount into my lunch and with a now approving smile bagged it up and handed it to me. Food in hand we headed outside to a scooter that Adam had parked out back. I don’t know where it came from or why he had it but again, such things did not matter. Focusing on packing our lunch away into the various compartments on his scooter I did not notice that he had disappeared. I was alone in a parking lot full of perfectly dressed Asian women sitting atop of their scooters, bag lunch tucked safely between their feet, dodging each other all the while trying to exit the seemingly normal parking lot. They were trying hard to leave but managing mainly to ride in circles. After a short time waiting I headed back in to see where he had go to only to find him engaged in a battle with the old man up in the grid. Nimbly Adam went up and through the metal and dodged the attempts of the old man to corner him. Back and forth they circled one another above and below the grid. The old man was certainly the more experienced but Adam grabbed a hanging sword and used it to keep the old man at bay and prevented him from getting to close or flanking him from the side. This dance between the two of them went on for what seemed like hours, the attention of those below, now gathering in throngs to watch the scene unfold above. And then with suddenness it no longer mattered and we we headed out to the scooter.

On the scooter it became imperative that we go by Adams parents house to turn off the alarm. No other reason was apparent or provided. We arrived promptly, he went in one door and I another. I did not know the alarm code and was panicked that by opening the door I would awake those inside. I churned through a list of numbers in my head but none matched the pattern that I did not know. My panic increased and in the next moment was eased as I heard the chirping of the alarm being deactivated by Adam. I headed out through the garage to meet up with him. We hopped back on the scooter and headed up the road to a place where we could sit and eat lunch. We left the garage door open. I headed in while he parked. Scooters were complicated from what I had seen with the Asian women at the market and I figured he would be a while. Inside there was young girl watching a dead catfish move and flop around inside of a deli case quite unnaturally. Its belly heaved up and down and moved from side to side if an alien was alive inside. The fish was large and whatever was going on inside of it started at one end and worked its way to the others, distorting and twisting it out of shape as it did so. The bulge was round and had the distinct impression of a face and claws as it moved. A light came on inside the deli case and the girl picked up the fish fearlessly to inspect it better in the light. Inside the catfish was a turtle squirming its way through the fishes insides, pressing its shell and claws hard against the skin. A painted shell showing as a grotesque face each time. The girl tried unsuccessfully to remove the turtle several times by shaking the fish. She reached inside and tried to grab the turtle but was rewarded with several bites on her fingers for trying. Adam came in, sword in hand from the grid game and sliced open the big catfish freeing the turtle in one downward chop. The force of the impact destroyed a section of the fish splattering a mess of fish all over the girl. Men came out of the woodwork to help her get cleaned up. We traded some jokes about how lucky they were for getting to wipe that mess off but thought nothing else of it once we grabbed a seat and started to eat.

I don’t recall us actually eating – certainly we did though after all that work – I am curious now about how my lunch tasted. It is a possibility though that my lack of memory is a direct result of eating said lunch though – I will never know. Somehow we had arrived back at the Thai market. This time though are attention was focused on a section where a different and specific game was being played. We checked in, selected a character and lined up. This was something obviously familiar to us both. The check-in and character selection process was tedious as we each tried to figure out exactly what combination of the various stats would give us the best chance of surviving the longest and scoring points. Once our turn came along we headed to a spawn point and put on our specific helmets – there was something very important about the different helmets – I don’t know what but each was unique and mattered to those watching the games. The helmets varied in size, ornamentation color, shape and what could only be called species – some were shaped like human heads, others elephants, tigers, monkeys and other things I did not recognize but understood the power behind each. Each time you spawned you received the same helmet with slight alterations – a type of reincarnation. Once we had our helmets on we were issued a gun and some ammunition. The gun was a long military style rifle and the ammo was an assortment of target discs that when shot stuck to your opponent and qualified you as scoring a hit. The guns were not completely reliable, that was one of the odd parts of the game that was supposed to reflect a part of life – and as such they did not fire all the time when you pulled the trigger leaving you out in the open with no ability to defend yourself, providing nothing but an empty “click” while your observing opponents provided you with a toothy grin as they took aim your way. Each time you were shot you appeared instantly at the back of the line and the process repeated itself until you were bored with the game and moved on to something else. Adam and I worked as a highly qualified team and took few casualties while we worked our way from isle to isle only getting to re-spawn when we ran out of ammo and had to take a hit to get more – something about preventing camping. We stalked the usual suspects through the isles picking them off in groups or individually. This particular game we were scoring well and hitting our target – a great day for the games.

There was a bark in the distance and it distracted me. Another and my attention turned to find its source. I looked back and took a target to the forehead. My re-spawn was back to the reality of six-thirty Saturday morning and Stormy was repeatedly letting me know that he needed to go out. My night of adventure with my bud had come to a close, but so real was it that even hours later, I recall each detail as clear as if it had just happened and as if it had actually happened and was not just a figment of some deranged dream.

While visiting in Indiana over the summer Carol and I took the kids on a super secret road trip to somewhere cool and exciting near Dayton, OH – or specifically the National Museum of the United States Air Force. When looking up things to do this seemed like a good option. It was reasonably close to Indy to accommodate a day trip, there was no entry fee, they had food onsite and best of all it was chalked full of anything and everything that could, did or might one day fly.

[See image gallery at www.eternallychaotic.com]

There is no pamphlet that could ever come close to doing this place justice – no way – no how. This is the best museum I have ever been too related to aviation – ever. I think it might even top or at minimum rival the Smithsonian in D.C. – hard to say though since my visit there was in eighth grade. Regardless, the Air Force museum was top notch from the moment we entered when they opened until we were ushered out the doors when they closed. A long day of walking, reading, sightseeing and generally staring in disbelief at the sites surrounding you in three massive hangers.

The hangers are setup to tell the story of aviation from inception through various wars, technology changes, more wars and then off to outer space. As you progress through the open hangers you are free to roam digest all that there. We stayed for an entire day and “rushed” through just to see what we could. Given another two or three days we might have been able to read all the signage, walk around all the static displays and take in the detail that I am certain was hiding in plain site just waiting to be discovered. The kids were in awe as well – perhaps even overwhelmed with the shear magnitude of what they were looking at up close and in person. The displays differed in size from the very normal, what you might expect to the gargantuan that must have held dragons on the inside. Mouths open, jaws on the floor we made our way from one to the next taking in the scenes along the way. I think we even got a few hundred pictures as well (and those are the ones that came out – I bet we could have taken thousands with the right amount of time).

While we stopped for lunch I had the pleasure of meeting an older gentleman who sat next to us while we ate and told us stories about his time flying and different facts about some of the planes. We got to hear the kid friendly version of a few war stories about how he and his fellow pilots flew missions and were scared to death most of the time. After lunch he said his good byes and took off but we saw him four or five more times throughout the remainder of the day looking longingly at various displays or talking to others. I think he and maybe some others were the softer versions of what was on display and I was happy that the kids got to talk to him and hear some of his tales even if just for a few minutes.

When we were finally ushered out along with the rest of the disappointed patrons hoping for a few more minutes we were not about to leave. A slight rain had started for fall and while others headed for the cover provided by their vehicles, we turned the opposite direction and headed to the outdoor static displays of some of the more modern heavy body transports parked on the tarmac.

Headed back to Indy this was certainly a trip well worth the time and one that we will absolutely do again some time in the future. Carol and I had a great time, the kids had a great time, and even months later writing this and looking through the pictures I can still remember the absolutely massive scale that this museum had going for it. Everywhere you looked you were surrounded by instruments of flight – the wings of man – and they were amazing.

Violet turned five this year while we were visiting Grandma and Grandpa in Indiana. Surrounded by grandparents, and great grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, second cousins and various other people whose relation isn’t quite known, Violet had a great turning of age. Lots of kids, lots of food, lots of gifts, and most importantly lots of cake…although I bet if you ask Violet it would be the gifts that won out, with the cake a close second.

Violet had a blast and I think we even found a genuine moment of both awe and surprise when she pulled out “Dreamlight“. She had been talking about this “thing” for a long while but there was no way daddy was shelling out $50 bucks for a glorified flashlight shoved into a stuffed animal – we did that as kids and while the stuffed animal might not have liked the extra orifice that was created, the effect was the same. Thankfully, Mommy Carol found a great deal on one and Violet’s precious “Green Kitty” was spared the agony that was certain to come otherwise (granted they make flashlights much smaller nowadays…)

On top of the normal birthday cheer it was great to be able to celebrate with the extended family. We don’t get to see them very often, let alone during birthdays or other non-holiday events, and it was refreshing to celebrate with everyone.
