The distinctive red stripes, the mouth-watering aroma, the snapping sizzle from the pan, the crisp texture and, of course, the intense, porky flavor. With a food that pleasures all five of our senses, how can we resist the temptation of sinfully delicious bacon?

In a recent issue of Chile Pepper magazine, we rounded up all things bacon. There's bacon floss, maple-bacon coffee, jalapeno bacon salt, spicy bacon jerky and even bacon pancake mix.

While all were good and certainly unique, nothing trumps the bacon I had at Café Pasqual's in Santa Fe. Sticky, spicy and sugary, this was a step into bacon heaven. And it's easy to create at home.

This recipe highlights bacon at its sweet, spicy best.

Start with applewood-smoked bacon. Dip it into a mixture of chile powder and brown sugar, then slowly cook this in the oven. (Keep a watchful eye for burning.) Personally, I like to bump up the chile powder a notch. This recipe highlights bacon at its sweet, spicy best. And with the oven doing most of the work, this is an easy addition to any brunch during the holiday season.

Red Chile and Sugar-Coated Bacon

- makes 4 servings -
Zest Factor: Medium
Adapted from Cooking with Café Pasqual's.

Note: The book warns not to make this recipe without parchment paper to cover the baking sheets or "the bacon will stick like the dickens."

Ingredients

2 tablespoons mild red chile powder
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
12 thickly-sliced pieces applewood-smoked bacon

Procedure

1. Preheat the oven too 300°F.

2. Mix the chile powder and sugar in a shallow bowl. Fit a sheet of parchment paper onto a jelly-roll pan. Bury each slice of bacon in the chile and sugar mixture, and rub both sides to assure the mixture adheres. Lay the bacon strips on the prepared pan. The bacon strips may be left flat or twisted two or three times by holding each end to make a candied "stick."

3. Bake for 30 minutes without turning. Always transfer candied bacon using tongs; the hot sugar can easily burn your fingers.

RIM's successor to the original Bold -- the BlackBerry Bold 9700 -- has finally landed on our doorsteps. The 9000 is in many ways a hard act to follow. Hardware-wise, it lived up to its name, going where most phones never went with its retro, leathery, nearly clunky looks in an age of rounded edges and shiny curves. Don't get us wrong -- we loved the 9000's aesthetics obsessively -- which is why we couldn't wait to get our hands on its newborn child. A few questions we had in mind: would the 9700 live up to its predecessor's notoriously uncompromising fashion sense? Would the new Bold feel as good to hold and use in the hand as its loving parent? How would it stack up against other, new devices from RIM? If these are the kind of questions you think you might want answers to, read on for our impressions.
Continue reading BlackBerry Bold 9700 hands-on and impressions

BlackBerry Bold 9700 hands-on and impressions originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 00:00:00 EST.
Note: Jessie Oleson (aka Cakespy) drops by every Monday to share a delicious dessert recipe.

[Original artwork and photographs: Jessie Oleson]

Poor Halloween candy. Just a few days ago it was the star of the supermarket aisle, the festive treat on everyone's mind. But now, just two days later, these sweet treats are Halloween has-beens, relegated to sale bins, withering away in candy dishes.

If you have an oven with a window, it's fascinating to watch while it bakes.

But is there a way to breathe new life—to re-animate, if you will—this past its prime candy? I propose yes: by dumping it in a pie shell and melting it into one monstrous mash of a candy pie. It's not for the faint of heart, what with the alarming spread of candy viscera melted all over the top. I wouldn't even try to call it a sophisticated or refined dessert. But in an admittedly guilty pleasure sort of way, this pie is actually pretty tasty, and if you have an oven with a window, it's fascinating to watch while it bakes.

Leftover Halloween Candy Pie

- makes one 10-inch pie -

Ingredients

1 single pie crust, blind baked (you can use your favorite recipe, or mine is below)
Enough leftover Halloween candy to fill the pie crust

Pie Crust

Ingredients

- makes one rather thick 10-inch pie crust -

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
1 cup unsalted butter, very cold, cut into 3/4 inch cubes
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
4 to 8 tablespoons ice water

Procedure

1. Prepare the pie crust. Put the flour, salt and sugar into a food processor and pulse once or twice. Add the butter and process until the mixture looks grainy. Then slowly, while pulsing, add the water until you can form the dough by pressing it between your fingers (Note: if you don't have a food processor, this can all be done by hand as well). Put the loose dough onto a piece of plastic wrap. Using the wrap, fold the loose dough towards the middle and press with the back of your hands to form dough. Wrap and chill for at least 4 hours before using. When you're ready, roll it out with a rolling pin to an approximately 12-inch circle; transfer this to a pie plate and trim the edges and shape them in any way you'd like. Blind bake the pie crust for about 10 to 15 minutes at 350°F.

2. Let the pie crust rest until it's room temperature, and then fill it with whatever mix of candy suits you. I found that a chocolate-heavy mix tasted best, so my mix included Tootsie Rolls in regular and vanilla, Snickers Fun Size bars, M&Ms, Kit Kat bars, a small amount of Dots, and of course some candy corn. Don't be afraid to fill it to the top, as the candy will flatten and lower as it melts.

3. Bake in a 350°F oven for about 30-40 minutes, or until the candy is melted and the crust golden. The time may vary depending on your candy mixture. Once you remove it from the oven, let it cool for at least an hour so that the filling can set.

eight hours of sleep a night to function well on a daily basis, but if you short yourself during work nights and overcompensate during weekends, you may be doing yourself a disservice. Habitual excessive sleeping can cause "sleep drunkeness" and can be a sign of an underlying health problem, CNN reports.

"There's been at least two epidemiological studies to show that if people get less than five hours, or more than 10 hours of sleep, it increases their mortality," said Michael Breus, head of the sleep division at Southwest Spine and Sports in Scottsdale, Arizona.

It’s always a lot of fun for us — and hopefully for you, the readers — any time we can run wild with pictures, news, and even reviews of an unannounced handset. Today, however, RIM spoiled our fun and formally announced the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Things like carriers, release dates and pricing have been withheld for the time being, but RIM has made a statement saying that we should all expect to see the BlackBerry 9700 go on sale “around the world beginning in November.” Spec wise, nothing has changed since our pre-release review, but just in case some of you forgot or weren’t paying a whole lot of attention, here’s a quick refresher on the critical specs:

BlackBerry OS 5.0

624MHz CPU

256MB flash memory and support for microSD cards up to 32GB

Quad-band UMTS/HSDPA (800/850/1900/2100 MHz) or tri-band UMTS/HSDPA (900/1700/2100 MHz)

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE

Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g with UMA support (carrier dependent)

A-GPS

2.44″ HVGA+ display

3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash

Optical trackpad

Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP/AVCRP

1500 mAh battery

6 hours of talk time and 17 days of standby (3G)

109mm x 60mm x 14.1mm, 122g

In short, this is the BlackBerry device of your dreams. We’re expecting pretty much every single major GSM carrier on the planet to pick up the 9700 sooner or later, so we’ll be sure to keep the updates coming. As always, high res pics and a few other odds and ends are available after the jump.

UPDATE: AT&T, Rogers and T-Mobile have announced they will be carrying the Bold 9700 in the weeks ahead. AT&T and T-Mobile’s 9700 will go for $199.99 after a $100 MIR on 2-year deals while Rogers will be asking for $299.99 on a 3-year contract with a monthly minimum voice and data plan of $45. Bell and TELUS have yet to come forward with pricing but have confirmed they will be carrying the device.

You flip between TV episodes and clips, and full-length movies, with side-to-side clicker motions, the full-screen video just works (despite difficulties you might have with your browser), and if you've got an infrared remote working with your system already, Hulu will probably work with it.

It's odd, then, that Hulu will release a TV-friendly client for an open-source operating system and still give media centers like Boxee the cold shoulder. Still, it's a nice little reward for those who made a Linux desktop client Hulu's most requested feature.

Hulu Desktop for Linux is a free download, requires a modern Ubuntu or Fedora installation, Flash, and a few libraries, detailed at the link.

Hulu Desktop (Linux) [Hulu]

We have it on good authority that T-Mobile and AT&T both currently plan on announcing the Bold 2 -- also known as the Onyx -- on October 21. As a refresher, this would be the touchpad-driven piece with model number 9700 that's been making the rounds on the leak circuit the past few months, a fitting successor to a device that virtually every celebrity this side of Merle Haggard has been photographed carrying at once point or another. What we don't know is pricing or retail launch date, but at least this gives us a pretty hard target for when we can expect details -- so start cleaning out that Bold trackball, because you're going to have something to eBay here pretty shortly.

[Thanks, Cody]

BlackBerry Bold 2 to be announced October 21 for T-Mobile, AT&T originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 00:15:00 EST.
Link in App World Web Store or www.blackberry.com/messenger

UPDATE 2: Looks like it is available outside of the App World at:
www.blackberry.com/messenger

Update 1: Just got the feature list from RIM

Avatars can be easily set up and then populated from BlackBerry Contacts

Group Functionality – allows groups of friends, family and personal contacts to stay connected & share experiences instantly on their BlackBerry smartphones:

ongoing group chat

sharing pictures

organizing tasks and events with shared lists and calendars

Bar-code identity – easily add/invite contacts to BlackBerry Messenger by displaying a 2-dimensional bar code that the invitees can capture with their BlackBerry camera

Large Media File Transfer – up to 6MB

The download is a whopping 2.8 megabytes but it looks like it is worth it. I am still waiting for my device to reboot and heading to the bar but let us know what you find in the comments! I wonder how long it will take this one to take top place in the App World charts.

PS. App World says it supports all devices in all countries. Not sure how that works…

Cliffs… strikingly beautiful to look at, at least from below. From the top the view can be both exhilarating and terrifying, and to some it will be the last thing they see. These ten amazing cliffs run the gamut from serene to scary to staggering – sheer drops of scenic beauty that mark the cutting edge of Mother Nature in all her geological glory.

Great Trango Tower, Pakistan

(images via: Pakwheels and Cairns.com)

The Great Trango Tower in the Karakorum Range of the Himalayas in Pakistan is 20,608 ft (6,286 meters) high and features the ultimate cliffhanger: the greatest nearly vertical drop on the planet. That’s James Pitman of South African Expeditions, above right, standing triumphantly atop Great Trango. Don’t look down, James…

(image via: ABC)

In 1992 a couple of Australian BASE jumpers asked themselves what all BASE jumpers ask at one time or another: where could we perform the Highest Altitude World Record BASE jump? Glenn Singleman and Nic Feteris not only made the leap from the top of the Great Trango Tower, they recorded it on video for posterity – so anyone and everyone would believe they actually did it. Feteris and Singleman first had to climb Great Trango Tower to get into position for the jump, which began at the 19,537 ft (5,955 meter) level of the Northwest Face. They landed on the northern side of the Dunge Glacier at the 13,779 ft (4,200 meter) level giving them a net vertical drop of 5,758 feet (1,755 meters) – over a mile!

Here’s a video of Feteris and Singleman’s awesome leap into the record books, from the ultimate viewpoint of Singleman’s helmet-mounted camera:

White Cliffs of Dover, United Kingdom

(images via: Mkeamy, AGHoyle, Pixdaus and Emma Alvarez)

As an iconic symbol of England, it’s hard to top the White Cliffs of Dover (unless you’re a bluebird). Stretching along the southeast coast and centered on the port of Dover, the approximately 100 million year old cliffs are composed of fine-grained limestone – chalk, in other words. The highest point of the cliffs is at Beachy Head where layers of chalk laid down over many millions of years rise up to 500 feet from the beach below.

(image via: Quadrophenia’s Lost Mod)

One of the most memorable cinematic views of the daunting chalk cliffs comes from the 1979 film Quadrophenia. Jimmy, the doomed Mod who personifies Pete Townshend’s ode to the Mod-Rocker battles of the early 1960s, takes a wild last ride along the top of the cliffs before… well, see the film if you haven’t yet done so. A curious corollary to Jimmy’s fictional final act is the actual suicide of a teenage accountant-trainee and weekend Mod named Barry Prior, whose body and scooter were found at the base of the cliffs in May of 1964. The story was front-page news in the English resort town of Brighton and it’s likely Townshend was affected and inspired by Prior’s sad demise.

Flaming Cliffs, Mongolia

(images via: Echo Vermont, Bukisa and MSN Encarta)

There are few places on earth more isolated than the Flaming Cliffs of Mongolia, a quality that enticed pioneering American naturalist and explorer Roy Chapman Andrews to make a total of five groundbreaking expeditions into the region between 1922 and 1930. Andrews and his team discovered a multitude of new dinosaurs beneath the magnificent cliffs, including the first known dinosaur eggs and complete nests buried beneath the rusty red sands.

(image via: Picsremix)

One key to the Flaming Cliffs’ ethereal beauty lies in the fact that few if any roads, habitations or development mar its timeless vistas. For this reason it fails as a tourist attraction but in this case that’s a good thing.

Kalaupapa Cliffs, Hawaii

(images via: LindiLindi, Kayaking Molokai and My Handicap Parking)

Don’t let their lush, verdant look fool you – the 3,315 ft (1,010 meter) high Kalaupapa Cliffs on the Hawaiian island of Molokai are the world’s highest sea cliffs and a misstep at the top leads to a long, long fall to the Pacific Ocean surf. The cliffs are part of an ancient volcanic caldera; thus their peaceful appearance today hints little at their extremely violent creation.

(image via: NPS)

The view of the community of Kalaupapa from the top of the cliffs is similar to that from a small airplane. The isolation afforded by the spectacular cliffs made the area beneath them ideal locations for housing victims of Hansen’s disease (leprosy). In fact, until the introduction of Dapsone and other sulfone drugs in the 1940s, the settlements of Kalaupapa and nearby Kalawao were restricted to sufferers of this age-old scourge.

Santorini, Greece

(images via: About.com:Cruises and Braindoc)

The rugged cliffs lining the coastline of Santorini testify to this spectacularly beautiful Greek island’s tumultuous history. Formed from layers of pumice, volcanic ash and solidified magma, the 980 ft (300 meter) high cliffs are today the precarious perch for the town of Thira – acrophobics need not apply.

(image via: The Travelogues)

It’s estimated the volcano underlying Santorini has erupted 12 times in the past 200,000 years and the catastrophic eruption of 1650 BC was one of the largest to have taken place anywhere on earth during the past 10,000 years. The eruption’s effects likely caused the collapse of the advanced Minoan civilization located on Crete and, some say, were the basis for the legend of the “lost continent” of Atlantis.

Preikestolen, Norway

(images via: Mountaincat Geology, Tripadvisor and Henk Binnendijk)

Norway’s popular Preikestolen, known colloquially as Preacher’s Pulpit, is a 1,982 ft (604 meter) flat-topped cliff that gives those who make the arduous hike to its summit an incredible view of the Lysefjorden far below. The mainly flat, clear area at the top pf the cliff measures about 80 by 80 feet and is visited by nearly 100,000 people over the course of the average year.

(images via: David Seaton and Scenery Series)

Visitors are advised not to venture too close to the edge of the cliff but that doesn’t seem to stop those who seek the ultimate photo opportunity.

Lokrum Island, Croatia

(images via: Trip Advisor and AzureCroatia)

Formerly the home of Archduke Maximilian Ferdinand, who was for a short time in the 1860s the Emperor of Mexico, the island of Lokrum is situated in the Adriatic Sea just off the coast of Dubrovnik, Croatia. A popular tourist attraction known chiefly for its many semi-wild peacocks, Lokrum’s nude beaches draw visitors from all across Europe.

(image via: Travelpod)

Toward the open sea, Lokrum’s beaches rise to rugged, rocky cliffs. The water below the cliffs is relatively deep and thus safe (a relative term) for cliff-divers.

Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland

(images via: Quinet and South.is)

Volcanic cliffs carved by countless storms and relentless ocean waves characterize the steep cliffs of Vestmannaeyjar (The Westmen Isles), an archipelago south of Iceland. The islands were first settled nearly 1,000 years ago by Viking raiders who brought slaves from Ireland (the so-called “westmen”). A little-known incident occurred on the islands in 1627 when they were invaded by Barbary pirates from Algiers! A fleet of 15 ships landed on the main island of Heimaey and the pirates killed or captured nearly half of the 500 or so inhabitants; those who lived were sold into slavery upon the pirate fleet’s return to Algeria.

(image via: Bukisa)

The smaller islands are uninhabited for the most part and their wind-blasted, inaccessible cliffs (the Vestmanna Birdcliffs) serve as a secure nesting place for thousands of Atlantic Puffins.

Mount Asgard, Canada

(images via: Oceandots and UMass)

Mount Asgard consists of a pair of roughly cylinder-shaped granite towers with flat tops and precipitous sides. Located in Auyuittuq National Park, on Baffin Island in Canada’s far north, Mount Asgard takes its name from Asgard, the Old Norse equivalent to the ancient Greeks’ Mount Olympus. The slightly higher northern summit is 6,611 ft (2,015 meters) high and was first climbed in 1953.

(image via: Summit Post)

You may have seen Mount Asgard without realizing what and where it was – the opening scenes of the 1976 James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me” featured a BASE jump of the cliff by stuntman Rick Sylvester. The location was portrayed as the Swiss Alps but now you know better!

Tomoiwa Cliff, Japan

(images via: 88-News and Yakuza Boys)

Few are familiar with the Tomoiwa Cliff in Japan’s Gunma prefecture, but this 400 ft (120 meter) high cliff recently loomed into prominence when the body of famed cartoonist Yoshito Usui was found at its base. Usui was the creator of the popular Crayon Shin-chan manga and cartoons, and he was reported missing after failing to return from a hike on 4,665 ft (1,422 meter) high Mount Arafune.

(image via: Hardwarezone)

Eerily, Usui’s camera was found near his body – when the film inside was developed, it showed a disturbing sequence of photographs taken by Usui as he inched closer and closer to the cliff precipice, until… well, you can guess the rest.

Out Of This World Cliffs

(image via: SAI-MSU)

As a postscript, take a look at the cliffs in the above NASA APOD photo – they’re located on Miranda, a moon of the planet Uranus and are estimated to be 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) high! Click this link for a much larger image. Someone falling from the top of Verona Rupes would take about 12 minutes to reach the bottom, plenty of time to watch one’s life pass before their eyes.

Gizmodo's Sean Fallon takes a similar approach, but opts for a small Windows box over Apple TV so he's got more options to easily try out different media center software as it comes out. After ditching his cable package for a month for media he could stream for free with services like Hulu or Netflix, how did he feel?

When all was said and done, I found my experience without standard cable television to be more liberating than anything else. Sure, streaming video isn't always HD quality, not all of my favorite shows are readily available, and I have to search around a bit more for the things I want to watch—but I didn't suffer and I didn't feel like I was missing out. The added expense [of cable] was not justifiable—especially when I was paying for a bunch of things I never watched. The best part is that I was able to get pretty much everything I needed with a basic set of tools that anyone with a computer can take advantage of right away.

It's worth noting that Fallon didn't even "cheat" and use BitTorrent, so all the content he was accessing was freely and legitimately available on the internet.

Have we got any ex-cable or -satellite subscribers who've made the transition away from their bloated subscription packages? Let's hear more about your experience in the comments.

Life Without Cable or Satellite TV Is Easier Than You Think [Gizmodo]

Everybody knows internet radio is a hit when you're at your computer. Away from your computer? Not so much. Getting your streams into your living rooms, bedrooms, and semi-detached servants quarters is rarely easy, and rarely fun. Logitech's Squeezebox series has been one of the most seamless ways to make it happen, and with the Squeezebox Radio it gets even better. It's cheaper and prettier than the Boom we enjoyed this time last year, and, a little more fun too. How much fun? Join in and see.
No, Really. For Real.

It’s getting to the point where I feel a little silly writing every last little word about the potential Arrested Development movie that comes down the wire. But that’s what we do, right? So here it is: there is…will be…a script for an Arrested Development movie. Soon. So very, very soon. Maybe. If things go well.

THR reports the sky-rending news that Mitch Hurwitz has begun work on a script with series co-exec producer James Vallely. This is notable, I guess, because THR reports that Hurwitz has said he wouldn’t start a script unless the entire cast was in place to return for the film. Michael Cera had been reported as the holdout for some time, but maybe (Maeby?) he’s in now. Your guess is as good as mine. Some of the cast have even said in the past that Hurwitz had already been working on the script, but perhaps they just caught him taking notes on the behavior of banana stand employees in Santa Monica.

What’s the story for the film? Start guessing there, too. Back during Comic Con Jason Bateman said the movie wasn’t dead and that the plot could jump off from the end of the television series, when Maeby pitches the family’s story to Ron Howard as a movie. That’s more of a jumping off point than a story, though, so there will have to be a lot more revealed than that.

Fox Searchlight is still behind the film, and Hurwitz will direct. This would seem like the necessary point for me to include my boilerplate text about how the show was great, but probably better as a self-contained entity and that it’s already been too long and we don’t really need a movie, but I’ll let everyone hash that out in the comments. At this point, I’d be happy about the film really happening just so we could finally have something more than half-news and rumor to report about.
