Turin Brakes & Henri Gaobi music featured in Adidas ad

The commercial for the Adidas F50 shoes, that scored 40 goals in 62 matches this past Fifa World Cup is now being promoted in a commercial that features Henri Gaobi and Turin Brakes. You can hear Olly and Gale singing near the end and playing guitar before that. It’s a snippet, but it at least makes me want to hear the full thing someday…

Also, anyone who has been keeping a keen eye on us will know that we have been recording bits and bobs with a master drummer chap called Henri Gaobi. It doesn’t sound like Turin Brakes, more like a herd of Antelope thundering down a busy London High Street at rush hour. But me and Olly play and sing a bit on it. If you want to hear a snippet check out this new ADIDAS ad that features it.
You could even leave a nice comment on YouTube if you liked it.

Besides that, the band writes about the gig in Turin this Saturday (and the gig in Bologna on Friday).

The ad agency has this to say about the ad:

180′s executive creative director/managing partner Andy Fackrell says: “This film is particularly pertinent now as it is in marked contrast to the superstar marketing activity that has dominated this World Cup.”

This is true. And those Adidas wallpaintings are looking quite great. The ad follows a particularly obsessed fan-kid who defaces an Adidas wall painting every time a goal is scored by a player wearing the Adidas F50. The amazing paintings are created by up-and-coming African artists Paul Kasemwana and Espoir Kennedy, and they tell the story of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in traditional African style, the story of 32 heroes and 32 nations battling it out for the greatest prize in football.

Cathal Coughan releases new album

Back in October 2009, we mentioned Olly was recording harmonies for Irish singer/songwriter Cathal Coughan. His new album, Rancho Tetrehedron, will be released this August through Kitchenware Records:

In Spring 2007, Irish singer / songwriter Cathal Coughlan (formerly of Microdisney and The Fatima Mansions) flew off to Southern California for an indefinite stay. While he was there he composed music in a small timber framed cabin that an old World War ll vet had built. In this freespirited setting there was no evidence of any other outside musical influences, just Cathal along with his ruminations. Later that same year, Cathal returned to London and began recording the album that was to become ‘Rancho Tetrehedron’, with the help of Oliver Knights (Turin Brakes) and Andy Ramsay (Stereolab). ‘Rancho Tetrahedron’ is Cathal Coughlan’s fifth solo album, the first to be released through Kitchenware Records…

Apparently, Olly helped recording the album and he provided vocals. That is all we know for now, besides the fact that Cathal will be playing three shows in September, one of which is in Bush Hall, London.

State Intervention session online

State.ie have published the video for the Turin Brakes State Intervention, playing 4 songs in 12 minutes (Mirror, Feeling Oblivion, Painkiller and Underdog). Underdog features a rare mandolin solo by Ed (instead of the usual genius Gale solo). Pretty nice actually! Watch the full thing in HD below.

Glastonbury Update

Turin Brakes played the Glastonbury acoustic stage last Friday, and a huge success it was. About 5000 people watched the band play an awesome set of classics of the past ten years, as Olly explains in the official blog below.

Turin Brakes head to Bologna Botanique Festival

Turin Brakes will be playing a set as part of the Botanique Festival in Bologna on 23 July 2010. Support is the band Joycut. The gig starts at 21:30, doors open at 20:00. Best of all: it’s FREEEEE!

This Italian festival appearance is the second date in Italy this Summer… Previously, TB were announced for a festival in Turin.

New Gale blog

Gale has written a blog while the guys were playing shows in (Northern) Ireland. The “some kind of internet thingie” Gale writes about is a video session for State Magazine. Hopefully it will be available to watch soon enough.

Turin Brakes will appear in an acoustic session and talking about Outbursts on BBC Radio 2‘s Bob Harris show tonight. The show starts at midnight. Turin Brakes will be on air from 1 am. The session was recorded earlier this week.

Turin Brakes finally play Turin (sPAZIO211)

Turin Brakes are set to make a festival appearance in Turin (Torino), the city which makes up 50% of their name. This might be weird, but their set at the sPAZIO211 Festival will be their debut appearance in Turin, 11 years after The Door EP. The festival takes place from 19 – 25 July. Turin Brakes are playing a set on the 24th, sharing the stage with The Field, A Place To Bury Strangers and Drink To Me (amongst others, maybe).

Other acts performing at the festival are Coco Rosie, Micah P. Hinson and Kaki King. Headliners have yet to be announced, apparently.

Tickets will be available from here at some point.
