Trying to be an ethical shopper is a difficult business and with rapidly rising food prices it is even more difficult for concerned consumers to know that they are making good choices. A major conference, hosted by the co-operative movement in December 2008, will examine the extent to which consumers' concerns over the ethical production of their food have impacted on commercial practices.

Has the ethical consumer movement made its voice heard down the supply chain? Are food producers, in the UK and abroad, heeding calls for more sustainable production? How can social and economic justice for small-scale farmers be achieved? How can we make their voice more effective in the future? How are communities on the ground taking action to respond to the desire for sustainable food? And how will these issues be influenced by the current financial climate?

The conference, which is supported by Co-operativesUK, will be chaired by Sheila Dillon, presenter of Radio 4's The Food Programme. In January 2008 Sheila was awarded an honorary doctorate by City University for her work, which 'has changed the way in which we think about food.'

Speakers will include: Peter Marks, Chief Executive, The Co-operative Group, Professor Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City University, Professor James Sumberg, the New Economics Foundation, Kathini Maloba, General Secretary of the Kenya Women Workers Organization, Tomy Matthews Fair Trade Association of Kerala, Carolyn Steel, author of 'Hungry City', James Graham, chief executive of SAOS (the Scottish farmers' co-operative movement), representatives of the NFU and TUC, and a rich range of thinkers and practitioners.

The conference takes place on Thursday 4 December, at the British Library Conference Centre. Hub Talks | Intersections in Sustainability:New avenues through art & technology
Thursday 6th, 6 to 9pm, Hub Kings Cross

An evening to challenge the way we perceive art, technology and innovation. In a world which is running out of resources, find out how the technological world is being re-imagined and recycled. Meet the artists and innovators who are pushing the paradigm of 'sustainability' in their products and creations. Hear from entrepreneurs breaking common perceptions by resurrecting old materials to create dynamic new uses, functions, and possibilities. Topics our speakers will address include: (1) the culture of the disposable and its effect on creativity and new media, (2) how software, hardware and creative thinking are benefiting our community – from local to global, (3) creative applications of eco-media projects, particularly in terms of 'social telephony', and (4) the notion of artists as instigators of social and cultural change. Please RSVP to dermot.egan@the-hub.net if you’d like to come along.

We need to talk about Kingsnorth…

When: Thu Nov 13, 2008
The Fair Trade Fair is an annual event that has been held in London for over 20 years. The Fair provides an opportunity for craft producers from developing countries to showcase their produce, for consumers to purchase goods safe in the knowledge that they have be produced ethically and that the sales form theses items will directly contribute to the reduction of poverty in that community. Background: The first of these events was organised 1987 by Benny Dembitzer and was opened by Bob Geldof, Glenys Kinnock and Moria Stuart. About 20 organisations took place; by 1999 the number had reached 175. From attracting some 500 visitors in its first year, numbers rose to some 12,000 in 1999. Over the years a wide range of organisations have participated in the event due to the growing interest in the country as a whole of issues of ‘Fair Trade’, the importance of buying items that have been produce ethically and the role that trade can play in reducing world poverty. In 2007 Benny approached the Workers Beer Company with the view of taking over the organisation of the event; WBC had been a participant of the event through their ethical clothing company Ethical Threads. Benny remains to be involved as an advisor (for which were grateful), and hopefully this year he will don on the green Santa outfit as he has done for many years in the past! Definition of Fair Trade: Fair trade is an organised social movement and market-based approach to empowering developing country producers and promoting sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, and flowers. Fair trade's strategic intent is to deliberately work with marginalised producers and workers in order to help them move from a position of vulnerability to security and economic self-sufficiency. It also aims at empowering them to become stakeholders in their own organisations and actively play a wider role in the global arena to achieve greater equity in international trade. What can you do? You can come to the Fair, tell your friends and family about the event, and buy beautiful and unique Christmas presents for all special people in your life.

The Big Green Market

When: Thu Nov 6, 2008 to Sun Nov 9, 2008

The Big Green Market will be offering people the chance to stock up on ethical goodies, ranging from organic apples to fair-trade clothing and recycled jewellery when it visits York and Solihull this autumn.

This year the event will visit York and Solihull in November providing a great opportunity to buy Christmas presents with an ethical edge.

The Big Green Market will be at York Parliament Street on Thurs 6, Fri 7, Sat 8 and Sun 9 November and Solihull in Mell Square on Fri 21, Sat 22 & Sun 23 November, 2008.

Extra activities will include ideas on how to use up leftovers (Thurs 6 Nov, York) from the team at Love Food, Hate Waste – the waste not, want not mantra for the present day, advice on composting and other green eco information.

The Big Green Market will include a great selection of local small food producers, craftspeople and small ethical businesses such as Rachel Belios from Green Threads who says:

“It’s really important for people to see that you can shop as you would on the high street. The things here are affordable and we should dispel the myth that buying green is just for hippies.”

The event is organised by Jane Redfern, and Paul Kennedy who have collaborated on this project to bring green/eco products, locally produced and ethically traded goods into our town centres.

Jane Redfern says “We are particularly keen to help local producers and makers reach out to a new audience. The mix of stallholders is much wider than those found on farmer’s markets and ranges from organic cabbages to a great selection of contemporary crafts.”

British makers taking part include Midlands based Toft Alpacas, run by entrepreneur Kerry Bettinson, who uses wool from her parents herd of alpacas combined with contemporary design to create a covetable selection of distinctive gifts for the stylish and ethically-minded.

Food producers include venison burgers from Yorkshire’s Round Green Farm and Bluebell organics, who will be bringing their Yorkshire grown organic fruit and vegetables, living salads, and hand produced preserves and juices to York.

The market also hopes to feature activities promoting recycling and other advice on how to become more eco friendly. More information is available on www.biggreenmarket.co.uk

Paul Kennedy, says: “The Big Green Market brings together a wonderfully diverse range of stallholders and products with one common aim - to promote both traditional and alternative ways of production that work to and environmentally friendly ethos.”

We can promise that there will be something for everyone and are open to applications from anyone who feels that can fit the ethos of The Big Green Market.

The market will be open from 9am to 5pm on each day and is free for people to wander around.

Fairtrade Village, London

When: Sat Sep 13, 2008 to Sun Sep 14, 2008

Join us at the award winning Earthship Brighton for a one-day training event on 13 September 2008 on Off-grid Photovoltaic Systems and get your energy saving plans off the ground or off the grid as it may be!

The morning will be spent looking at the basics of photovoltaics, from system design and load calculation through to the various types of solar panels, batteries and inverters and their suitability in different situations. After a luxurious lunch from locally sourced ingredients, you will have the opportunity to put your new knowledge to the test as you work in small groups to set up an actual PV system with all of the various components supplied. The small groups will rotate between this and tours of the renewable systems of Earthship Brighton including a wind turbine, solar thermal panels and a wood pellet stove. The tour will also include the other earthship systems and concepts such as rainwater harvesting, passive solar design and building with low impact materials.

A two-day course. Dates with places are available:

Saturday 8 + Sunday 9 Nov 2008
10am-5pm both days

This course will introduce the basics of permaculture and show how this approach can be applied.
Venue

Stanmer Park (near University of Sussex), Brighton and other venues in and around Brighton. Click here for directions to our meeting point at Stanmer Park.
Course tutors

The course will be taught by one or more of these tutors:

Jen Coglin, permaculture teacher and designer.

Pippa Johns, permaculture teacher and designer; runs Edible Gardens plant nursery and design consultancy.
Who is the course for?

The course is open to anyone over the age of 16. No prior knowledge of permaculture is needed.
What will the course cover?

This is a 12-hour course, which will offer information about, and some hands-on experience of, the basics of permaculture design; designing for sustainability in all walks of life. Whether your interest is gardening, farming, planning, building homes, community work, economic regeneration, business or green lifestyles, the application of Permaculture principles empowers you to make a positive contribution towards a sustainable future. The course will enable you to apply permaculture principles in your individual circumstance to help move towards sustainability.

Please note that attending this course does not qualify you to use the term 'permaculture' as part of your work as a professional or with the public, such as being a gardener, a teacher, a designer, giving talks about permaculture, etc. In order to do this you need to complete a permaculture design course such as our Building sustainable communities course.
What you will need to bring

• Sun hat & sun screen
• Warm/waterproof clothing & sturdy outdoor footwear
• Warm socks or slippers for indoors
• Gardening gloves if you want to get involved in the practical demonstrations
• Pens, pencils, notepad & an A4 paper a ring binder
• Food for lunch
• Water bottle
Learning methods and outcomes

The course will be taught using a variety of methods; group work, games, presentations, discussion, video and slides. We will visit Stanmer Organics project. There will be some linkwork to help you reflect on what you are learning and put it into practice. By the end of the course you will have a basic knowledge of some of the permaculture ethics and principles and how to apply them.
What does this course lead on to?

This course is an ideal starter for anyone interested in a full permaculture design course. Brighton Permaculture Trust runs a full course called Building Sustainable Communities around Brighton, starting each winter.

The Urban Green Fair – an independent green fair for London, powered by solar and wind energy.

Hello and welcome!

The second Urban Green Fair is on August 31st 2008. We expect thousands of enthusiastic Londoners to come and enjoy the day, learn about current environmental issues and solutions, discover practical innovations in sustainable living and reducing climate change and, of course, have fun!

Like last year, it will be an ideal family event featuring films, talks, workshops, kids activities, stalls, sunshine and unusual bicycles. With no bars or big stages the emphasis is on interactive education and communication. It is a chance to share ideas, meet familiar faces and make new friends.

On a bigger scale, the Urban Green Fair highlights the approach of peak oil and the lack of governmental action on climate change. Using positive and practical examples, we hope to empower people to make simple changes in their ideas and actions on urban energy use. For example, we hope to encourage two thousand households to switch to a renewable electricity supplier.

The Soil Association Organic Food Festival, sponsored by Yeo Valley Organic, is Europe’s largest celebration of all things organic and kicks off this year’s Soil Association Organic Fortnight, a nationwide campaign bringing together individuals, communities, retailers, restaurants, schools and organic farms.

Now in its eighth year the festival will be host to over 300 organic companies showcasing the very best organic food, drink, fashion, skincare and homeware products. Visitors will be spoilt for choice with bustling food markets, a green planet pavilion, a demonstration kitchen, an exciting talks programme, food cruises around the harbour, and an arts and entertainment fringe that includes food demos, children's activities, and music.

Patrick Holden, director of the Soil Association said,
"Attending the Soil Association Organic Food Festival is truly memorable and inspiring and has become one of the highlights of my year. Meeting the producers and learning the stories behind the food you eat is a life enhancing experience. Making a commitment to buy local and organic produce is one of the most important actions we can take to build a more secure and climate friendly food future for ourselves and our children against a background of fossil fuel depletion and climate change."

New to the festival for 2008:
With rising oil prices fuelling our passion for local production, this year we are showcasing a wealth of organic producers and retailers within a 30-mile radius of the city with our first Local Market in Anchor Square.
If you really want to focus on eating locally what better than your own back yard! There will be a Grow your own organic garden area featuring a Garden Café, demonstration vegetable plots, talks, and opportunities to pick up useful tips.
Organic Live! areas across the site will include cookery demos and wine tasting and visitors can engage with exhibitors and environmental experts on a range of fascinating subjects - from their personal stories to big panel discussions on climate change and sustainable fishing. Come along and learn everything from how Transition communities are moving from oil dependency to local resilience to how to be ‘Self-Sufficient-ish’ from Bristol twins and authors Andy & Dave Hamilton.
For budding Jamie Olivers the Food for Life Partnership cooking bus will be in the Kid’s Zone. There will be free, 90-minute cookery sessions taking place three times a day where 7 to 11 year-olds will be taught how to make delicious organic treats.
The festival will open on Saturday morning with the Matthew sailing towards the Amphitheatre to the sound of 'Food Glorious Food' sung by the amazing People of Note Choir. They will also be performing again later on Saturday on the Millenium Square stage. This will be part of a whole feast of musical entertainment throughout the site over the weekend.

London Freewheel

When: Sun Sep 21, 2008
Bikes take over capital
September 21st 2008 is confirmed as this year's Sky Sports London Freewheel, the day when Londoners can dig into their sheds, cupboards and lofts, dust off their bikes and enjoy cycling for the day around a traffic-free London.

Announcing the date, and confirming Sky Sports as the headline sponsor for the event, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:

“There are so many reasons to dust off your bike this summer – it’s a great way to get fit, it saves you money, and it’s good for the environment. For those who are still not convinced, we are laying on the Sky Sports London Freewheel on September 21st - closing the roads of central London to allow Londoners of all ages, backgrounds and cycling abilities the chance to enjoy our fantastic city by bike. What could be nicer than feeling the wind on your face as you zip past some of London's most famous landmarks, completely undisturbed by traffic.”

Register now to be part of a carnival atmosphere, taking in views of the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace and more.

Hubs at Highbury Fields, Clapham Common, Victoria Park and Ravenscourt Park will provide a rest and refreshment point on the way in to the central route which will feature entertainment including music, cycling angels, jugglers and more.

Less confident cyclists can sign up to join one of the local rides and start the journey from their borough to it's the city's heart.

Sky Sports London Freewheel is once again free to register and attend. Last year, over 38,000 bikes descended on the city's streets, and this year's event promises to be bigger and better still!

Resurgence Slow Sunday

When: Sun Jul 27, 2008
Welcome to Resurgence Slow Sunday
Bake Locally – Think Globally
On July 27th join Resurgence Slow Sunday and Bake Bread to Save the Planet

If we are ever going to address climate change we need to look at our own behaviour. We need a time to reflect on the choices that we, as individuals, make every single day, and how those choices impact our environment.

Resurgence Slow Sunday is a day to reflect on our relationship with the world around us and to quietly make change happen, locally and globally.

In the same way that Gandhi made spinning an act of defiance against oppressive colonialism, for the first Resurgence Slow Sunday we are asking you to make good, healthy home-baked bread as an act of defiance against global consumerism.

FSC Friday

When: Fri Sep 26, 2008
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) UK Working Group will be holding the inaugural “FSC Friday” in September this year. It is envisaged that the day will provide a focus for FSC promotions and activities, in the same way as Fairtrade Fortnight highlighted the work of the The Fairtrade Foundation. The aim is to increase awareness of the importance of responsible forestry and to encourage consumers to look for the FSC's tick-tree logo on timber and paper products.

FSC Friday will lead into a weekend of FSC related activities. We are keen to promote the importance of UK forests and woodlands and we will be encouraging people to visit their local FSC certified site. Following on from the success of the FSC competitions last year, FSC UK will also be launching several competitions and prize draws to coincide with FSC Friday.
