Religion plays an important part of life in Ethiopia. The Orthodox Tewahedo Church ceremonies are unique and impressive; especially Timket (Epiphany) and Ledet (Christmas) festivals which provide colourful ceremonies and celebrations. People dress in traditional costume and celebrate festivals across the country with colourful unique ceremonies.

Christian Festivals in Ethiopia
The major captivating Christian festivals and events in this category include Timket (Epiphany) in January, Ledet (Christmas) December and Hidar Tsion in November.

Timket (Epiphany) in January
Timket is Ethiopian language for Epiphany. The holiday commemorating Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan is of special significance in Ethiopia. It is the most important and colorful event of the year. Timket is celebrated in Ethiopia on January 19 beginning on the Eve of Timket with colourful processions and ceremonies ending on the January 20.
Although the festival is largely religious, it has no lack of secular elements such as partying and match-making.
In Timket, Tella and Tej are brewed, special bread is baked, and sheep are slaughtered to mark the three-day celebration.
Best place to witness this festival: Gonder, Lalibela and Addis Ababa

Ledet (Christmas) December
Ledet (Christmas) falls on December 29 Ethiopian calendar (January 7 Gregorian calendar). Ledet (Christmas) is celebrated after 43 days fasting known as Tsome Gahad (Advent), with a spectacular procession, which begins at 6 AM and lasts until 9 AM. After the mass service, people go home to break the fast with the meat of chicken or lamb or beef accompanied with injera and the traditional drinks (i.e. tella or tej).
Best place to witness this festival: Lalibela

Hidar Tsion in November
The Virgin Mary is one of the most venerated of all religious figures in Ethiopia.
About 33 days are annually dedicated to different celebrations in the commemoration of Mary. "Hidar Tsion" is associated with the presence of the Ark of the Covenant in Axum and the belief that the Ark itself is a symbolism to her womb.
This festival is attended by tens of thousands of people from all over Ethiopia, making it one of the most joyous annual pilgrimages in Axum, the "sacred city of the Ethiopians."
Best place to witness this festival: Axum

Dallol volcano is located in the Danakil Depression in North East of Ethiopia offers an opportunity to see the first signs of a new ocean basin forming. South of Dallol, the crust is cut into rectangular salt slabs and transported up into the highlands a near endless procession of camel caravans. The salt canyons south of Dallol Mountain are some of the most impressive geological features in the area. It looks like another planet because there are lots of colorful rocks in each meter. It’s quite like a science fiction.
Not far from Dallol in the Danakil Depression north of the Great Rift Valley, the only volcanic crater below sea level has remained silent since 1926 as the seabed it will one day occupy gradually widens.
Another impressive natural phenomenon of this region is Erta Ale, an active shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. Erta Ale is 613 meters tall, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. It is located in the Danakil Depression.
The Afar people inhabited this harsh inhospitable region, will give a cultural encounter to your stay in the area. The Nomadic Afar people, dominantly Muslim, the women are dressed colorfully, mainly they live on herding camels and livestock; their villages are made up of small circular mobile huts with very inter woven kinship social structure led by elders.

Ethiopia … a land of discovery!
Ethiopia, formerly called Abyssinia, is a land rich in culture and tradition. Extensive historic sites, wonders and splendors, stunning landscapes and fascinating attractions will surprise any visitor. It is a unique country that has much to offer to please any taste: history, culture, wildlife, nature and so on. It is a land of great antiquity, with a culture and traditions stretching back more than 3,000 Years.
Ethiopia also presents one of the most stunning natural environments in Africa. Because of the size of the country, and the great variety of its landscapes and climate, Ethiopia represents all that Africa has to offer.

North Ethiopia and East Ethiopia
Ethiopia has so much to offer visitors: the Historic Route, covering the ancient town of Axum, with its amazing carved obelisks, Christian festivals and relics, including the Ark of the Covenant; Gondar, with its castles and palaces; Lalibela, with its remarkable rock hewn churches; and the walled Muslim city of Harar.
Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile and others magnificent Great Rift Valley Lakes, many with national parks, home to a wealth of bird and animal life. The high, rugged, Simien Mountains in the north and the Bale Mountains in the south are also home to some unique wild life, and are ideal for trekking.

North-Eastern Ethiopia
In the north-east, Dallol, this part of the African continent also offers an opportunity to see the first signs of a new ocean basin forming.

South Ethiopia and South Western Ethiopia
In the Southern and South-Western of Ethiopia, beautiful scenery and colorful cultures all combine to make this part of the country unique. The mix of cultures vastness and solitude of the lower Omo basin, combined with Mago and Omo National Parks, makes this area a natural wonder that offers unmatched experience.
Come to Ethiopia to the majestic natural and cultural beauties of highest splendor and make an unforgettable discovery of life time!
