1. Tell Utah Not to Give Anti-Wolf Group $300,000

Despite protests from democratic lawmakers, it looks like Don Peay, founder of the hunting advocacy group Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW), will be getting $300,000 out of the state's general fund to lobby against wolves in Utah, where few if any wolves even live.

Please sign the petition telling Governor Hebert to veto this budget item - taxpayer money shouldn't be given to private businesses, or individuals, that want to fight the Endangered Species act and wage war on wildlife.

2. Help Lucky, San Antonio Zoo's Lone Elephant

Following the death of the elephant Queenie, animal advocates are calling on the San Antonio Zoo to retire Lucky - a 53-year-old female Asian elephant - to a sanctuary and permanently close its elephant exhibit.

Please send a letter to the zoo's director and the mayor asking them to send Lucky to an environment that can better meet her needs.

3. Tell the BLM to Protect Wild Horses During Drought

The Bureau of Land Management is accepting comments on a plan to manage wild horses and livestock during drought and has come up with a few options for dealing with emergencies from hauling water to removing animals, even though there are far more privately owned livestock than there are horses.

Please send a letter to the BLM asking that it prioritize removing livestock over wild horses in the event of a drought and that removal of horses must be used only as a last resort.

After a mere 28 years, I decided to move back to my small hometown. My vet’s office runs a rescue from which I adopted my two dogs. There I saw a collection box with a picture of a tiger on it - donations for Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary. I asked Pam, the Office Manager about Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary. I was amazed when she told me about them and what they do.

Already a member of Team EFA at the time, I wanted to start raising money to help Kay and the animals. So I began to paint some little pieces of art, selling them on Etsy and donating all the proceeds to Cedarhill. I’ve been donating to them for about 8 years now.

Kay and I would email and I would get their monthly news letter. I knew that visitors were rare to Cedarhill because the animals had already had stressful lives and needed peace, quiet and great care. Then after several years, I got the email and I was invited to visit ! I loaded up on cat toys and went to visit the sanctuary.

CedarHill is amazing. It is nicer than some zoos that I have visited. Arthur, the pig, was already a favorite of mine and I knew of his antics via the newsletter and web postings. I was able to tour, play with the domestic cats, meet Arthur, and just overall bask in all the wonderfulness.

The enclosures are well-built, extremely sturdy and provide play and exercise areas. Kay realizes that the animals are still animals, wild in their nature. Another fabulous thing about Cedarhill is that nearby Mississippi State University has a School of Veterinary Medicine and the students get to learn about exotics first hand.

Although Kay has had personal health issues she always manages to put the animals and their care first. In the “keeping it real department” -- early last Saturday morning I was driving by Cedarhill on the way to a show in Alabama and there was Kay out in the field where the pigs and horses live, shoveling poop.

1. Tell the USFWS to Protect Wolves

Despite their continued struggle to survive and the fact that more than 1,200 have been brutally slaughtered since they lost protection in the Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes regions, the USFWS is drafting a proposal that would remove Endangered Species Protection from nearly all wolves, which wolf advocates believe will be a total disaster.

Please send a letter to USFWS Director Dan Ashe asking that wolves remain protected under the ESA.

2. End Gas Chamber Euthanasia in Texas

Animal advocates in Texas are supporting bills that would end gas chamber euthanasia in the state. There has already been a change in attitudes towards ending this inhumane practice and several counties have stopped using gas chambers in the past few years.

CedarHill Animal Sanctuary, Inc. was founded in 1990 by owner/Executive Director/operator Kay McElroy. We are licensed by the Mississippi state game & wildlife department, accredited by (ACE) animal centers of excellence and the association of Sanctuaries (ASA). We received our (501)(c)(3) status in 1992.

The principal focus of the sanctuary is the welfare of the great cats and all animals. There are currently few laws, either federal or state to protect these animals from neglect and mistreatment. The sanctuary on behalf of its charges and all exotic cats, maintains that each animal, as a fellow inhabitant of this planet has certain basic rights which humans are obliged to respect; dignity of being, unpolluted living space, and a rightful place in the natural order.

The secondary goal of the sanctuary is simply to provide for the animal residents of Cedarhill a safe haven, which is the duty owed to them. The sanctuary chooses a narrow focus in its campaign for the ethical treatment of all animals. “As we honor the few, we honor the many”.

Kay has become a leader in the animal sanctuary community. In 1994 she wrote and distributed a book titled Nutritional Needs for the Exotic Feline in Captivity. She has also become a resource to exotic animal caretakers in other countries. Kay wrote the Exotic Animal Act of 1997 that was passed into law in the state of Mississippi. The law prohibits canned hunts, exotic animal auctions, established state registration requirements and caging standards.

Cedarhill Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is 100 % donor supported by the generous contributions of more than 1400 donors. Among its donor family are community and youth groups that have donated their time and skills to help with projects and construction throughout Cedarhill’s 20 acres. Cedarhill receives no government funding.

1. Ask Lawmakers in RI to Protect Pets from Mutilation

Legislation was recently introduced in Rhode Island that would prohibit landlords from requiring tenants to devocalize or declaw their pets. However, animal advocates are arguing that landlords aren't the reason pets are exposed to these dangerous and unnecessary surgeries - irresponsible owners are, and even if this law is passed landlords will easily be able to bypass it by banning pets entirely which would make it even harder for renters with companion animals to find a place to live.

Please sign the petition asking lawmakers in Rhode Island to withdraw their bill and introduced legislation that will ban declawing and devocalization entirely.

2. Help Make it a Crime to Watch a Dogfight in Montana

Montana is currently the only state in the U.S. that has no penalties for being a spectator at a dogfight and they just killed a bill that would have made it a misdemeanor. Spectators who attend dogfights, and other animal bloodsports, help fuel this barbaric underground industry and perpetuate other illegal activity and should be held accountable.

3. Help a Community Save Wild Horses in Nevada

Despite numerous solutions offered by residents, local officials and wild horse advocacy groups to keep a herd wild and free, the Bureau of Land Management has once again refused to listen to reason and rounded them up, finishing off the herd for good.

1. Stop Slaughter of Deer in Rock Creek Park

Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC has been a haven for deer for 120 years until now. The National Park Service has ordered the killing of half of the park's 314 deer by either baiting them with treats and shooting them with guns and arrows or catching them in nets and shooting them in the head with captive-bolt guns.

Please send a letter to the Director of the National Park Service asking him to abandon this plan, and instead protect the parks resident deer.

The wild horses in Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado have been around for a while and are considered a part of the park's natural landscape and history and are also enjoyed by thousands of people who visit the park every year. The National Park Service is now seeking public comments about how to manage this herd.

Please submit a comment to the NPS urging them to protect these horses and manage the population humanely with birth control, as it does with other populations.

3. Tell Congress Enough is Enough: Defund Wildlife Services Already

A few weeks ago "wildlife specialist" Jamie Olson made the news for sharing pictures of his dogs brutally torturing a female coyote who was caught in a leghold trap. Russell Files, another Wildlife Services agent was just busted for baiting and catching his neighbors 2-year-old dog Zoey in a leghold trap for coming into his yard too many times...all while we paid for him to do it. Wildlife Services kills millions of animals each year and their methods can not only be considered cruel towards wildlife, but they put people and our pets in danger as well.

Please send a letter to Congress asking that Wildlife Services be defunded.

The Turlock Hen Rescue and Animal Place

"On February 22nd and 23rd, 2012, Animal Place – with the help of Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary and Farm Sanctuary – coordinated the largest rescue of farmed animals in California history. A&L Poultry, an egg farm located in Turlock, CA. stopped feeding 50,000 caged hens, leaving the birds without food for more than two weeks.”

The Stanislaus Animal Services Agency received a call by a concerned citizen late Tuesday regarding a property at 9501 S. Carpenter Road, just west of Turlock, where an estimated 50,000 abandoned chickens were left without being fed for about two weeks. An estimated 17,000 chickens were found dead upon arrival.

Annette Patton, Executive Director of the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency, explained that her agency seized the property, rented to A&L Poultry and took control of the animals on Tuesday and responded on Wednesday. Upon arriving at the egg farm, an estimated 17,000 chickens were found dead as they were destroyed out of their cages inside the buildings.

“Words cannot describe what we saw,” said Patton.

Hello, my name is Anne Kenney and I started Annabel’s Lil’ Rescue Hen Vegan Bakery on Etsy in remembrance of the 50,000 hens left to starve to death in Turlock, CA last year in order to raise money for rescued animals. It’s because the Animal Place Sanctuary rescue of 4,100 hens was so profound I was moved to start a non-profit vegan bakery to raise money for Animal Place. I also donate to Harvest Home and United Poultry Concerns and care for rescued hens at home.

I nominated Animal Place because of their will. It is their will to make the world a better place. And it’s their will to prove that the impossible is possible. They can turn wishful thinking into reality. They are an educated, dedicated group of hard working people with one goal: to end animal suffering.

Animal Place proved that no rescue is too big; no job too hard. When the county said “no” they said “yes”. Animal Place said stop euthanizing the hens and give them to us…..thousands and thousands of sick hens didn’t scare them because their will was too strong. Animal Place has the will to counteract horrible acts with loving kindness in this day and age when there is so much cruelty towards animals. They proved that where there is a will there is a way. Yes we can save these fellow creatures. And they really need us to try!

Animal place is well organized and full of hard working people who truly love animals. They have the ability to bring people together and focus donations the efforts of volunteers to get the job done. They not only rescued the remaining hens but found homes for all of them!

I am both inspired and grateful for Animal Place’s efforts on behalf of the animals. I personally have adopted 9 Turlock hens and will forever be changed by this experience. Animal Place did an act of kindness for the hens and they filled my yard with joy, invaluable joy.

I can’t explain how life changing it has been to know a battery hen that survived insurmountable odds with the help of a very willful group of people. Thank you Animal Place!

1. Support a Ban of Dog, Cat and Horse Meat in Hawaii

The Hawaiian Senate is considering a bill (Bill 197) that would make it make it a Class B felony to kill a dog, cat or horse for human consumption. The bill would also make it illegal to eat or breed companion animals for this purpose, in addition to banning the possession, sale, purchase, transport, import or giving away any companion animals that are headed for someones plate.

2. Thank the EU for Banning Animal Testing for Cosmetics

After decades of campaigning, the EU has announced that it is on track to finalize the ban on animal testing for cosmetics this March, which will make it so that anyone selling cosmetic products in the EU will not be allowed to test finished products or their ingredients on animals anywhere in the world, whether or not an alternative to animal testing is available.

3. Tell Manitoba to Reinstate Licensing Requirements for Dog Breeders

Manitoba has dropped its licensing requirement for dog breeders, which means they can now do whatever they want with no oversight. Animal advocates are now worried about the safety of dogs with the potential proliferation of puppy mills in the area, in addition to the potential burden this could mean for rescues and shelters.

Raffle Donation Request: Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue, NM

Dear Etsy for Animals,

My name is Liz Moskow and I am a volunteer for Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue in Albuquerque, NM.

I am trying to put together a raffle to raise money for our group. I am contacting you in the hopes that you may have a member or members who would consider making a donation to our efforts. My goal is to have each item/items/basket be valued at around $50 or more, but I would, of course, be pleased to accept anything you would like to donate.

I'd like to have all donations in by the end of this month (February) and then begin photographing them and make the display table. Then I will begin ramp up publicity on our FB page, then sell tickets and likely do winner draws on April 12th. That's my rough plan. I am going to have an impartial person - a friend's little girl - wear a Weimaraner mask and pull the winning tickets and photograph the entire thing for FB.

I am sending requests to businesses who make dog related products, but also to companies who simply make interesting or unique or beautiful items.

What do YOU get out of this effort?

1. The knowledge that you helped support abandoned, abused, & neglected dogs get the medical & emotional help they need so that they can be placed in loving forever homes.

2. Your business will be highly publicized on our Facebook page as we promote the raffle. We currently have well over 4000 likes, but we grow every day. AND our fans are not only in NM. In fact, we have fans in almost every state in the US as well as all over Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. They are very loyal - our posts average over 200 likes, sometimes 500-700, with many, many comments.

3. Any donation you make is fully tax deductible, as we are a registered non-profit 501(c)(3).

What is different about

Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue?

1. We are an incredibly small group with just a handful of volunteers struggling to help all of the Weimaraners in need in NM - and there are many! In over 4 years we have taken in and re-homed over 200 Weimaraners needing rescue in New Mexico. NM ranks 46 among the 50 states for Animal Protection Laws. Even purebred dogs like Weimaraners who end up in shelters in NM usually have less than 20% chance of being saved without rescue's willingness to pull them. Euthanasia rates in shelters across the state are higher than 75%.

2. Unlike many rescues, we take in dogs outside of our coverage area. We have taken in dozens of dogs from states across the US, typically special-needs and dogs other rescues would deem less adoptable because of appearance or health concerns. We believe strongly that these animals are worth helping and we have had great success placing them in loving homes. Unlike other breed specific rescues, we sometimes take in dogs of other breeds or mixes who need our help when other rescues are unable to help them.

3. When one of our dogs enters rescue, it is immediately vetted (vaccines, HW test, dewormed, microchipped & anything else it needs) and then goes to a loving foster home (we do not board dogs). Puppies are spayed/neutered between six and nine months of age and not before, and adult dogs are usually given a bit of time to adjust to foster care before being put under anesthesia for spay/neuter or other surgeries. We elect to have prophylactic gastropxies done on most of our dogs during spay and neuter, a procedure that is much more costly for rescue but helps lessen the chance of GDV (torsion) by 90% down the road because this is so very common in Weimaraners and life-threatening when it happens.

Sometimes we have dogs who have not been as socialized as we'd like, so we put them through obedience classes and some dogs become patients of the behavioral veterinarian we work with. We take in many special-needs dogs and so we use the expertise of board-certified surgeons and specialists as well. We go to great lengths to meet every medical, emotional & social need of every dog so that each one is set up for success when it is adopted. We easily spend between $1K and $10K on each dog, depending on the severity of the medical issues it comes in with.

4. We do not only place dogs in NM. We accept applications from all over the country as long as the applicant is willing to come to NM to pick up the dog by car (we do not put dogs on commercial planes).

5. When dogs are adopted, we send the dogs on their way with information on all kinds of products we believe in and use, including but not limited to food, supplements, bedding, toys, accessories, or artwork Weimaraners and their owners might enjoy.
