May 8, 2013 EMQG Meeting Notes

The May swap was a Mothers day theme, or something pastel.

Announcements

Kelly is offering to teach us how to make a Scrappy Trip Around the World block on June 19 at the McNail Riley House from 6:30-8:30pm. Information is posted on the EMQG blog, or contact Kelly.

Nelda is the Lane County Fair Textile Coordinator. The fair runs from June 24-28.

She is looking for volunteers to assist with setup, etc. around July 17-20. She’d also like volunteers to provide demonstrations. Volunteers will receive a free pass to the fair. Entries are now open if you’d like to enter a project in the fair.

Sharon reminded us that the CoburgQuilt Show is July 27. She encouraged us to enter a quilt in the show.

Jessica posted some information on our blog regarding the Portland Modern Quilt Guild. They invited us to their meeting because they’re having a special guest speaker, Jacquie Gering.

Charlene handed out her fabric packets for the bee.

Demo

Wanda gave us a demonstration of the Accuquilt Studio cutter available at Our Sewing Room. They currently have two dies. One die cuts 2 1/2” strips, the other die makes five blocks of varying sizes. Wanda showed us a quilt that she made using the 5-block die.

It costs $5 to use the cutter for an hour. What a bargain and timesaver.

Wanda recommends pressing your fabric before running it through the cutter. She also trimmed her fabric (fat quarters I think) down to approximately 14”. You can use about nine layers of fabric at a time. If you use too many, it may not cut completely through all of the layers.

OSR plans to add more dies in the near future. They will also have an adapter so that you can bring in dies from other brands of die cutting machines to use on the Studio cutter.

Show and Tell

Nelda shared a table runner; Ruby showed us a quilt that was her first stack-and-whack; Sharon made a quilt for her granddaughter using the Shadow Play pattern; Missy showed us a quilt that she made for her niece.

Wanda appreciated Deanna's help in the set up of furniture before the meeting. She was totally surprised and pleased that while her back was turned all the tables and chairs were back in their place. Many thanks to Deanna and the rest of you!

Upcoming Events

May 25 EMQG Sew Day at Our Sewing Room in Springfield. Cost $5. Punch cards are available (the cost is $20 for $25 worth of sewing time). When you fill up your punch card, put it in the drawing for a chance to win sew time.

OSR has their new Studio Go! to cut the strips for you, so give that a Go!

Kelly will supply: Cutting mats, iron and ironing board.

Hi all,
Apparently I have been out in the sun a bit too much this week... I forgot that THIS Wednesday is the our monthly meeting for May (I thought it was next week ZOINKS!)

This month Wanda is doing a demo of the AWESOME Studio GO! cutter. Alice and I tried it out last week and it made short work of a stack of fabric-- I am now awash in 2.5" strips! Scrappy trip along anyone? And it was easy enough for a 3 AND A HALF year old to crank 10 layers of fabric through.

Our swap is Mother's Day, pastels.

Again, I apologize for not reading the calendar right, the second Wednesday (chat at 6:30 and meeting starts at 7:00) totally snuck up on me.

I received the most wonderful invite from the PMQG's president Michelle. She wrote:

Our next meeting is Thursday, May 16th and you probably know that Quilt Market is in town that weekend. We have Jacquie Gering speaking (!!!) and Alissa Haight Carlton is also speaking about MQG membership. If you or any of your guild members would be interested in joining us please let me know. We have limited space, but I wanted to extend an invite, since it is a great opportunity to ask Alissa questions about membership.

We are also co-hosting a meet and greet Friday, May 17th at Modern Domestic. This is open to anyone and should be alot of fun. Then on Saturday, May 18th there is a MQG party at the Convention Center, which I believe is also open to anyone. Lots of stuff happening that weekend!

And (there is more!) we are co-hosting three classes at Modern Domestic. There is still space left in the class with Carolyn Friedlander on Monday May 20th. Here is the link

June Classes

We teamed up with PNCA to bring two weekend workshops to Portland June 29-30. They have extended a class discount ($100 off either of these classes) to ANY member of a MQG (this has nothing to do with MQG membership, just if you are part of a guild somewhere). Boston, Bean town... quilters, friends...

I (Jessica) am going to make a few peace flags for the "To Boston with Love" project started by the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild. If any of you want to join me, I am willing to be in charge of sending the flags to Boston, if someone can pick up the flags from the May meeting. They all need to be in Boston by May 31. The VMQG site has very specific (easy) instructions for making the flags, they have no batting and it wouldn't take long to make a one or a few. They are planning on displaying them publicly this summer and while it can't take away the horror of the bombs... Beauty and Community can do a lot to help the healing process.

Sew Day and tying up loose ends with the Pioneer Modern talk...

Greetings! Here is the lovely photo I promised many of you during the Pioneer Quilt Show talk. This incarnation of a double wedding ring was pieced by Victoria Findlay Wolfe and quilted by Lisa Sipes. If you could just see the quilting... and to see it in person, it would blow your mind. There is nothing new... except what we bring today to what has been done before. The other link I promised was to dear Jacquie's blog. Her book (along with co-author Katie Pederson) is Quilting Modern, it is a lovely book of technique, a good one for people wanting to explore what all this "Modern Quilting" is all about.

I am so excited about getting to go to the SEW DAY this month, that I want to issue a challenge to any of you and all of you to make a St. Louis 16 patch with me (Jessica). I have been moving my sewing space and realized that I have been COLLECTING and COLLECTING FQs and I hardly ever use them... at the very same moment Katy Jones, of Imagingermonkey fame, was making the most simple, beautiful quilt from her online friend, Steffani K's tutorial--- long story short... I need to start something (it is always more fun with friends), this quilt is simple with a great graphic effect, and we all have more FQ than we need!

What it can do for you:
--give you a taste of the flavor of an online quilt-along via flickr.
--Make me finish something---I mean, make YOU finish something.
--Use up those cute cute cute FQs you have been hoarding.

Wanda has been teaching new quilters. She and Lela put together two quilts with the same blocks, showing you can go "Modern" and "Traditional" with the same pattern, depending on your fabric choices. Susan Miner did the quilting on Wanda's quilt and Lela quilted hers.

Come hear my thoughts on the "Modern Quilt Movement" at the Pioneer Quilt show. I, Jessica, am speaking Wednesday @ 1pm @ the Lane Co. Historical Museum (at the Fairgrounds). I have spoken to a few of you, but the more the merrier, if you have a quilt that you would loan me to show for the trunk show send me an email and I can pick it up and drop it off. Additionally, if you are available to help hold up the quilts at the trunk show... I'd love a cute assistant AND I'd be your best friend for-eva! Send me an email.

April 10, 2013 EMQG Meeting Notes

Phyllis and Diane were the presenters at our meeting. They need a volunteer to run the May 8 meeting. [Crystal and Jenny volunteered]

Phyllis talked about a new beginning for our guild. With new leadership and more people holding positions, it gives us a chance to think about what direction we’d like to go. People of all skill levels are welcome, we want to be an inclusive group.

She introduced people that have volunteered for the new positions.

We’re adding a 6:00pm business meeting each month before the regular meeting. Feel free to attend and bring dinner if you want. Everyone is welcome to attend.

We’re still looking for a permanent meeting place, preferably free. Once we have some possibilities, everyone will get a chance to vote on location, date, etc. For the short-term we’ll remain at Our Sewing Room. Wanda and Lela set up the chairs a little different at this meeting, and it worked out really well. We can seat more people, and see better. Volunteers are welcome to come early and help set up chairs.

If you arrive early and want to work on a project, please put some money in the money basket. The normal rate is $1/hour or $5 for all day.

The May swap is a Mothers day theme, or something pastel. Keep an eye out for the mosaic for ideas!

Kelly, our Glorious Organizer, has demonstrations planned for upcoming meetings. She also brings flyers for upcoming events in our area.

In May, Wanda will demo the Studio Pro cutter available at Our Sewing Room.

Kelly has planned an extended Show & Tell for our June meeting. She’d like everyone to bring one of their first quilts and a more recent modern quilt. If you don’t have a finished quilt, it’s okay to bring a quilt top.

Wanda works at Our Sewing Room, and recently had several gentlemen come in that needed their pants hemmed. She gave us a “demo” of trying to explain to them where to hold the measuring tape, so that she could get the proper measurement of their inseam.

We saw quilts from: Wanda (a quilt she designed for a class she is teaching), Lela, Diane shared “Harvey,” Diane, Nancy L., Nancy J., Pat, Tracy and Denise. Watch for them to be posted on in a follow up post here on the blog.

March 13, 2013 EMQG Meeting Notes

~~The last day to submit a quilt for the Pioneer Quilt show is Friday, March 15.~~ Date passed. They’d like to hang the modern quilts together, so please tell them if you’re part of the modern quilt guild.

QuiltCon

Jessica and Jenny attended QuiltCon in Austin, Texas. It was the first national conference for modern quilters. Jessica shared her impressions and experiences with us. She didn’t take any classes, but attended workshops and lectures. One of their topics was discussing the definition of modern quilting. Many of the attendees used Instagram to share photos.

Jessica and Jenny met people that work in the industry, as well as officers from other quilt guilds. Jessica found out that the Board of Directors for this event, personally funded QuiltCon initially. That shows how motivated they were to get modern quilters together.

It was very motivating to see so many people, quilters, that get our obsession with fabric and quilting.

One of the other highlights was the warm weather and sunshine.

The next QuiltCon will take place in February 2015. They decided to have a national conference every other year. They are discussing four possible locations (Austin and New Orleans are two of the possible sites). They would like to keep the location mid-country to make it more accessible.

The national guild wants to be more formalized; have guilds join and participate in swaps, etc., similar to Facebook or Twitter. It’s likely to cost something to join. They’d like to have a sew-down; kind of like a retreat about four times a year for mad quilters. They’d like to have it in a nice hotel, try to keep costs down, and also have workshops.

Agnes Wong (a former member of EMQG--she moved) was featured on the Modern Quilt Guild website. The website is modernquiltquild.com.

Jessica brought back some goodies from Quiltcon and held a raffle at the end of our meeting. I (Karen) was lucky enough to win some charm packs. Thanks for sharing, Jessica.

Madrona Road Challenge

Piece by Piece fabric shop will display our finished projects from the Madrona Road challenge. They would like to hang them before the upcoming Shop hop.

New Jobs

Jessica can no longer be President of our guild; she has asked for volunteers take over. After some discussion we've come up with some jobs and volunteers to fill them.

At an earlier meeting Nelda had volunteered to manage our monthly Swaps.

Demo

Phyllis shared a special ruler that is used for half-square triangles. It’s from Fast 2 Mark Tools, Easy Triangle Tool. It can be used for HSTs--two at a time, and quarter square triangles—four at a time.

It costs under $20 and can be found at Piece by Piece, Something to Crow About, and Jo-Ann’s catalog.

I think we persuaded Phyllis to bring it to Sew day so we can see it in action.

We had some new people attend our meeting, several were Phyllis’s sewing cohorts. Ruby, Charlene’s mom was visiting, so attended our meeting. She even participated in our SWAP.

QuiltCon Charity Quilt Project

On that note, here are pictures of the process of our QuiltCon quilt we did as a guild!

In November we received these incredible blocks & at put the option to the guild members to make some more blocks if they so chose.

Additional blocks arrived at our December and January meetings. Along with donations of backing, sashing, batting, quilting & shipping monies.

In January a few ladies got together one evening at OSR to piece the top.

Jessica was a wiz with the math for sashing thank goodness!

Our finished top at the end of the evening.

Then more wavy line quilting in colored thread and large stitches.

Scrappy binding and this fun backing made a fabulously fun quilt.

Add the label & a sleeve for display at QuiltCon before it is donated.

Boxed it up & shipped it off.

Thank you to all who helped us accomplish this quilt!

Madrona Road Challenge

Hey all--
Our February due date is looming ever closer to finish the Madrona Road Challenge! Better get them all finished and quilted. If you are wondering about the Modern Quilt Guild Challenge part of it, the due date for finished projects is January 31.

I hope some of you made it to the Oregon Garden show... if you got some pics I'd love to share them with the rest of the group. See you February 13th!

Pioneer Quilters Annual Quilt Show

The 37th annual Pioneer Quilters Quilt Show will be held at the Lane County Historical Museum, Tuesday, April 23-Sunday, April 28, from 10:00-4:00.

Jessica is speaking on Wednesday of that week...and they would like us to display some of our modern quilts alongside their traditional quilts.

Tradition meets modern, sounds fun! We will keep you posted about the show and Jessica's speaking times!

~ Mary Jo announced that we as a group could display quilts in The Sewing Room. If you have a quilt to display then we need to bring them. You will need a 4" hanging sleeve on the back and a rod to hang it with. A label is a good idea also.

~There is a signup sheet for the 2013 Bee. If you are interested we are getting the new year under way.

~ Some of our ladies showed off their progress on the Madrona Road Challenge projects. They are due at the Feb. 13^th mtg. If you would like to be considered for the Michael Miller challenge you can find the Flickr group here to enter by January 31, finished, 3 layers quilted!

All projects in progress...more to come at our next meeting!

Titles to consider: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Swap Captain, Queen Bee, Special Events Coordinators and Helping Chairs, Programs Coordinator, Tech Blogger or Social Media/Web Coordinator, Photographer, Minute Taker.
Leadership structures to consider: Pres/VP, Committee Leadership, Consensus group, Part time Teams for Quarterly Leadership
Financials to consider: Dues per year, Money raising ideas (quilters garage sale, show presence, fundraisers, Members boutique 10% donation sales), Pay-to-Play set up, love offering/donations style.
Meeting ideas to consider: speakers, field trips, demos, show n tell, swaps, bees, sew days
Update master email and phone lists
Create poll or survey for gathering consensus for above mentioned considerations

~SHOW N TELL~

Kira showed off her quilts that she based with good ol' washable Elmers Glue. In her experience it worked great, was not stiff, quilted up wonderful and washed out beautifully! Her quilts are adorable, so it definitely works!
