The Incredible Story of Louis Zamperini

On December 25, Universal Pictures’ new film “Unbroken” is set to debut nationwide. Based upon the bestselling book by Laura Hillenbrand, the film recounts the amazing odyssey of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic distance runner and World War II bombardier who survived a horrific plane crash, weeks adrift in shark infested waters and some 28 months of starvation and torture in Japanese prison camps. With the film about to hit theaters, learn eight fascinating facts about one of the most celebrated American servicemen of World War II.

1. He was a juvenile delinquent.

Born in January 1917 to Italian immigrant parents, Zamperini spent his youth as one of Torrance, California’s most notorious troublemakers. A smoker at age 5 and a drinker by 8, he built an adolescent criminal empire based around stealing anything that wasn’t nailed down from neighbors and local businesses. Zamperini blackened the eyes of any kids that dared challenge him, deflated a teacher’s car tires after she disciplined him and once even lobbed tomatoes at a cop. Family members were convinced he was headed for prison or the streets, but he finally abandoned his life of petty crime in high school, when a group of girls charmed him into joining the school’s track team. Encouraged by his older brother, Pete, he soon became one of southern California’s top athletes, and achieved a national high school record after blazing through a mile run in only 4 minutes, 21 seconds.

2. He met Adolf Hitler at the 1936 Olympics.

After graduating high school, Zamperini set his sights on competing in the 1936 Olympic games. Switching from his preferred 1,500 meters to the 5,000 meters, the “Torrance Tornado” made a good showing at the U.S. trials and became the youngest distance runner to ever make the Olympic team. At age 19 he was still too inexperienced to mount a challenge for gold, but during a Berlin Olympiad held in the shadow of the burgeoning Nazi empire, he finished eighth in his race and won over the crowd by laying down one of the fastest final laps in the history of the event. Among the impressed spectators was none other than Adolf Hitler, who shook Zamperini’s hand from his box and said, “Ah, you’re the boy with the fast finish.” Despite winning congratulations from the German “Fuhrer,” Zamperini wasn’t above getting into trouble during the Olympics. Before leaving Berlin, he was nearly shot while trying to swipe a Nazi flag from the Reich Chancellery as a souvenir.

3. He was a leading candidate to break the 4-minute barrier in the mile run.

Following his strong showing at the 1936 Olympics, Zamperini shattered collegiate records at the University of Southern California and became one its most celebrated student athletes. At the time, a sub-4-minute mile was considered a near-impossible feat, but as Zamperini’s profile grew, many began to whisper that he might be the man to pull it off. Former world record holder Glenn Cunningham tapped him to be “the next mile champion” in 1938, and Zamperini responded by going undefeated during his 1939 track season. He planned on gunning for gold and a potential miracle mile at the 1940 Olympics, but the contest was called off after the start of World War II. With his Olympic dream temporarily dashed, Zamperini enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941.

4. He cheated death several times while serving as a B-24 bombardier.

During World War II, Zamperini served as a B-24 Liberator bombardier in the Army Air Corps’ 372nd Bomb Squadron. From his perch in the nose of a craft nicknamed “Super Man,” he flew several missions including a famous December 1942 air raid on Wake Island, after which his plane nearly ran out of fuel before limping back to Midway Atoll. During a subsequent bombing run over the tiny island of Nauru, Japanese Zero fighter planes attacked Zamperini’s B-24, seriously wounding several crewmen and killing one. Leaking hydraulic fluid, the shredded B-24 only narrowly avoided disaster during an emergency landing at the island of Funafuti. Zamperini and his crewmates later learned that their plane had been riddled with nearly 600 holes from enemy gunfire and shrapnel.

5. He spent 47 days lost at sea.

On May 27, 1943, Zamperini and his crew were participating in a search and rescue mission over the Pacific when their plane suddenly lost power to two of its engines and careened into the sea. Only three of the ship’s 11 crewmen survived: Zamperini, pilot Russell Allen Phillips and tail gunner Francis McNamara. Adrift on a pair of life rafts with only meager provisions, the trio spent the next several weeks braving blistering heat, hunger, dehydration and circling packs of sharks. On one occasion, machine gunners from a passing Japanese bomber strafed the airmen, deflating one of their rafts and leaving the other on the verge of ruin. Zamperini and his fellow castaways survived on rainwater and the occasional captured bird or fish, but all soon saw their weight drop below 100 pounds, and McNamara perished after 33 days at sea. Zamperini and Phillips remained adrift for another two weeks before being captured by the Japanese Navy near the Marshall Islands. By then, the men had drifted an astonishing 2,000 miles.

6. He endured daily torment as a prisoner of war.

After being held for some six weeks on the island of Kwajalein, Zamperini was shipped to the Japanese mainland and eventually confined to three different interrogation centers and POW camps. Over the next two years, he suffered from disease, exposure, starvation, and near-daily beatings from guards. Japanese corporal Mutsuhiro Watanabe, nicknamed “the Bird” by the POWs, took particular glee in torturing the runner. During stints at the Omori and Naoetsu prison camps, Mutsuhiro pummeled Zamperini with clubs, belts and fists and regularly threatened to kill him. On one occasion, he had Zamperini hold a heavy wooden beam above his head and threatened to shoot him if he dropped it; on another, he forced Zamperini and other American prisoners to punch each other until they were nearly all knocked unconscious. Speaking of Mutsuhiro, Zamperini would later say he kept a watch out for him “like I was looking for a lion loose in the jungle.”

7. The Japanese tried to use him as a propaganda tool.

Zamperini’s reputation as a former Olympian saved him from execution at the hands of the Japanese, but it also saw him singled out for special punishment. Guards at the Ofuna interrogation center forced a weak and starved Zamperini to run foot races against Japanese competitors and then beat him with clubs when he had the nerve to win. Later, Japanese officials at Radio Tokyo hauled him into their studio and tried to persuade him to read propaganda messages over the air. Zamperini had been given up for dead back home, and the Japanese hoped to use him as a tool to lower American morale and paint the U.S. government as being incompetent. Zamperini agreed to read a message telling his parents he was alive, but despite warnings that he would be condemned to a punishment camp, he refused to cooperate any further.

8. He reunited with his former captors after the war.

Zamperini and his fellow POWs were liberated following the Japanese surrender in September 1945, but his wartime experiences would continue to haunt him. His years of malnourishment and torture left him unable to resume his career as a runner, and he became dependent on alcohol to stave off nightmares and flashbacks. Zamperini later claimed he was saved from his posttraumatic stress after witnessing a sermon by the evangelical preacher Billy Graham in 1949. He went on to discuss his conversion to Christianity on nationwide speaking tours and started a wilderness camp for troubled youths. In 1950, Zamperini returned to Japan for the first time since his liberation to address the Japanese war criminals held at Sugamo Prison in Tokyo. While there, he shook hands and embraced many of his old camp guards. Mutsuhiro Watanabe had avoided capture, but Zamperini later wrote a letter forgiving his former tormenter and even unsuccessfully tried to meet with him while in Japan for the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano.

Caught Up Into Paradise

Dr. Richard E. Eby was a nationally recognized physician, gynecologist, and professor with a very successful practice. In the year of 1972, he was 60 years old. When he was coming down to the second floor from the attic with a box of debris that he had collected. He dashed out and leaned against the railing, which was unknown to him, had been eaten away by termites. With his weight, and of the box, the railing gave way. He plunged headfirst two stories down onto the edge of the concrete sidewalk. His head hit the concrete suddenly. It resulted in complete dislocation and separation of the two halves of the skull, it caused the large blood vessel that carries the blood from the brain to the heart to rupture. His body hanging upside down, with a leg hanging on a bush, caused all the blood to drain from the body. By the time the paramedics got there, it was a bloodless body, hanging by the heels on the bush. As far as the paramedics were concerned, this was a corpse to take to the hospital for certification of death.

Right when Dr. Eby hit the cement, with no time in between, he was in a place he had never been before. He was in a place saturated with love, authority, peace, goodness and grace. He knew instinctively that was heaven. That is all he knew the moment he landed. He looked to see where he had landed, and it was absolutely perfect. Not a flower with a broken petal, just perfect. He had landed in a place that he was immediately able to name, it was paradise. Because instantly, he felt the presence of Jesus. It was a place of release from all the physical difficulties that the body or mind can register. He heard himself saying, without having any ability to compose the thought, “You are dead.” The voice seemingly came out from him and he heard it as if he had spoken it, but it was not his voice. It was the voice of the Lord. It is mind to mind. You can think so fast that it cannot be computed. It is the same mind that Christ has.

Dr. Richard Eby’s spiritual body was of the same size and shape. The difference was that he was in his spirit body. His spirit was transparent, like clear glass. When he looked to the side his spirit body would take on an opacity, but at the same time, he could see right through it. It had no weight, and none of the senses that register pain, fright or discomfort. There were no bones, ligaments, tissues or organs.

His mind operated very different from his mind here on Earth. When Jesus wanted to say something, he knew it immediately in his mind. If he asked a question, it seemed as if Jesus had answered it before he finished the question.

Dr. Eby asked Jesus, “why He would not talk to him in English.” Jesus answered him that for two reasons. One, all languages on earth is a result of a curse, therefore He would not speak with him in heaven in a cursed language. And mainly, because Satan cannot tune in, in the heavenly language. It is mind to mind and there are no errors.

They moved along in heaven, as if they were flying. Because they have no weight, they simply went as they wished, without ever touching the ground.

Dr. Eby asked, “God where am I?” God said, “Didn’t you read my book? And God asked him that questions the entire time they were together, until Dr. Eby got irritated and he asked him why does He asks him, Why did you not read my book? God answered him that He has put in His book everything that anyone will ever need to know. God said, It is all there, whether we found it or not.

Dr. Eby had a music background. He believes for that reason, God gave him the ability to hear the wonderful music in heaven. He describes music in Heaven, with no similarity in sound or form to the music on Earth, where it is limited to airwaves. Up there the music flows so beautifully, and has an unlimited vibration. It is of an entirely different level of hearing, because we do not hear it through our ears. Instead, we hear it directly on our minds. Dr. Eby asked Jesus from where the music was flowing. Jesus answered him, that He had created everything, out of Him there is nothing. Therefore, the music originates from Him and came out of the Throne of God.

While in heaven, he also smelled perfume. The Sweet smelling Savor. Jesus reminded him of the scriptures that the perfume is the prayer of the saints plus Jesus himself, the Sweet Smelling Savor, which the Bible refers to in many scriptures. He asked Jesus about his transparent body, with no organs. Jesus told him that our bodies in heaven is like the angels. Eternal. There are no organs because organs die. God told men to replenish the earth, not the heavens. Because in heaven everything is created or reborn.

He questioned Jesus why he was alone in that beautiful paradise. Jesus answered him that we all have our own individual paradise, as He promised He would go and prepare a place for us.

At one moment, God told him to run down to a valley. Suddenly at the end of his run, looking at beautiful flowers and trees, with fantastic light, surrounded by the music of heaven, suddenly everything went dark. That was the transition of him coming back to life.

Dr. Eby describes his come back to life as total misery. The first sensation he had several hours after his death, was total agony, so much worse than what our human sensory system can stand that we go into shock. Interestingly he was not feeling with his mind. However, he could sense every cell in his body. And every cell was screaming in torment from his toe to his head. Total agony that lasted for about two seconds. With the mind of Christ in him, he asked Jesus why he felt such a pain. Jesus answered him that it is in the book. Jesus was slain before the foundation of the earth to bear everyone iniquities, agonies, pain and sorrow. Jesus said to him, “there are billions of cells in my body and I have had pain in every single cell. You have now been totally aware of every individual cell as I am, in my body. ” And Jesus commanded him to tell everyone that He died for everyone either they believe or not.

When Dr. Eby came back to life, he was not healed completely. It was after 18 hours that he had a conscious of his own, being able to detect he had being in a bad accident. God gave him enough to know that anything that came afterwards was God’s power in his life, not his. Then, it took him several weeks to get over the initial trauma. Pretty much everything in his body was damaged. Within the first hour that he had come back to life, the Lord came to him in the room and gave him spiritual eyes that allowed him to see his corpse lying on the bed with no blood. Then Lord audibly spoke saying; “My son I have returned to give you the answer to my promise that I gave you during the night. With your hands you will heal and My peace will give onto you.”

Now, Dr. Eby learned several months later, that while he was in heaven with God, God was hearing voices. Voices that he was not aware of, prayer, intercessory voices that was coming from Chicago, from about seven or eight woman from prayer lines. That was created because a little girl, that saw when Dr. Eby fell from the balcony and heard the sound of him hitting the concrete. And quickly called her pastor, asking to get his prayer line going and any others that he knew too. As a result, several women got on their knees and told the Lord: “We accepted you as Savior, as Lord, as master, as our creator. We also learned from your book that you are the resurrector and we have never seen that happen. Now we just heard of a body in the morgue of a hospital. We are going to keep working today on our housework, but at 9 am tomorrow we are going to call the hospital.”

Sure enough, the hospital received those calls 18 hours after Dr. Eby had fallen and died. They asked what happened, and they were told, they do not know what happened, but suddenly around 6:30 that morning, the body had come alive.

Five years later, he learned the reason why God had given him that amazing experience in heaven. When he met the other side, hell.

For five years, Dr. Eby lived in a great lack of peace because he was not able to share that amazing experience he had had in heaven. And one day, he was visiting Israel. While he was in Lazarus tomb, he had another experience.

When he was in the tomb with two more women, a dim light went off and it total darkness. Dr. Eby turned to the women and told them to just pray and praise, but they were gone and simultaneously he was in his spirit body. The tomb was filled with God’s glory. He saw himself on his hands and knees trying to find the way out. But he saw on the side a man standing next to him, which he knew it was Jesus. He immediately jumped to his feet. And Jesus grabbed him by the arms and embraced him with pure love. He could feel Jesus’ physical body, the same body that Jesus walked on earth for 40 days. All at once, he was permeated with God’s love and peace. He looked into Jesus’ eyes that cannot be described. They just go right through you with love.

And Jesus said, “I brought you here to show you things and to tell you others. I know your prayers for five years. I refused to let you go out to speak until I showed you hell.” Jesus said: “My son, this is the last generation. I am returning soon. My son, tell them about heaven and hell. I am going to take you to hell as if you were an unsafe sinner, you will not be able to see me but you can ask me questions.”

Dr. Eby found himself immediately in the center of the earth, stopping on a solid rock. There was a hole in this solid rock about 6 ft. high and 3.5 Sq. perhaps. He looked down and saw a thousand little demons, the size of house spiders and a few larger ones on his feet. It was an indescribable bad smell. They were all cursing him and telling him that they finally won, making him believe that there is no hell, no demons and he would stay there forever. Dr. Eby could not describe the feeling of being completely isolated from the presence of God.

However, quickly the Lord took Dr. Eby away from hell and takes him before the White Throne. He asked Jesus if he could look into God’s eyes to see the love he saw when he was in the tomb in Jerusalem. Jesus told him no. He could only look into God’s eyes after his resurrection. He wanted to know what is to be a sinner and not be destroyed. And out of the mist of that huge throne came out a hand holding a book, that said; this is the Lamb’s Book of Life. God was looking through the pages with great speed, looking for Dr. Eby’s name. Then a voice like thunder said: “Your name is not in the Lamb’s Book of the Life, therefore you do not belong in the family of God. There is only one other family, and that is the family of Satan, so depart.” And the book was closed.

All the sudden Dr. Eby was turned around, looking at a distance, light years away, and there was the lake of fire. Jesus said; “That is the lake of fire that is where death and hell will be incinerated.” That moment Dr. Eby could fell total hopelessness, knowing that his faith was sealed forever.

Suddenly Dr. Eby is back in the tomb, the lights are back, he looked around, and there were the two women. They had not gone anywhere.

This amazing experience ended with Jesus words: “Tell them, tell them for I am coming soon! This is the last generation.”

Testimony of Young Moon Park

April. 3rd, 1986 was a big day that changed my life. In 1985, I drove a motorcycle under the influence and got into a traffic accident. I then went to prison. My wife asked for a divorce when I was released from prison. I set up a thorough plan to kill eight people: my wife, her family–even child relatives–who encouraged her to get the divorce. The last thing I did before executing this plan was to meet my mother in GwangJoo, then I booked a train ticket leaving for Seoul at 10:40 pm. It was the night of April, 3rd, 1986.

While I was at my mother's house, I heard a resonant voice that I've never heard before 40 minutes prior to getting on the train. It was so loud and thunderous of a sound that it almost split my ear. "Look! Look!" it said. Feeling too strange, I went out the front door and looked around, but there was no one. Second-guessing myself, I returned to the bedroom and I was about to light a smoke. Suddenly, the room became bright. I was surprised and looked at the bedroom door in the confusion of the moment. At that instant, I yelled in shock.

While a clear rainbow light was flowing down, there was something walking down in the light. Looking over it, it was a person who wore white clothing. Due to the bright light, I couldn't see its face clearly, but it was human-like. After a while, a rectangular horse-drawn carriage was following behind him.

There were three seats on the carriage. The center one was empty and two people wearing white clothing sat on the both sides. If someone who believes in Jesus saw the scene, he would have been touched greatly. But I was just stunned because I was just atheist man. A strange point I should add is that I felt my burning hatred disappearing.

I woke up my mother who was sleeping by me. But she didn't seem to see the scene and she ignored me, saying "Don't be ridiculous!" then went to sleep again. When I looked back at the carriage again, I was startled. A person who looked like me was sitting on the center seat which was previously empty. I touched him to make sure he was real. It was like I was looking at a mirror.

As soon as I sat down on the seat, the carriage took off. After that, I got to clearly witness heaven and hell. After passing by a dazzling and brilliant golden road, I passed by a place where people like me were walking along a flower garden road, smelling the flowers. I was able to see people came from all over the world.

I clearly saw my uncle's face on my mother's side who had been a Christian and died of a disease. However, I couldn't find any disease marks on him. His appearance looked like a youthful 30-something with a young face and body, similar to how I saw him when I was in 3rd~4th grade in elementary school. Peace and happiness, absent of any anxieties and concerns of the world, was apparent on his face. Hearing a continuous booming musical sound, the golden carriage was passing by brilliant golden houses after driving for several days. When we arrived here, the angles who wouldn't answer whatever I asked eventually said "Here is heaven," with a clear voice.

There were an uncountable number of houses which were stretched out into horizon. A common point that I felt from those brilliant golden houses that I've never seen on earth was that all of them were neatly organized and looked ready and waiting for an owner to move in. Unlike where my uncle was, I was unable to see anyone here. I asked the angels about it, but they didn't answer me.

The carriage was suddenly entering a dark place, as if it were night. The only source of illumination was a bright light the size of the full moon. It was in the shape of people wearing white clothing like those who drove the carriage. The music I heard before had already stopped. Fear entered my mind before I was aware of it. I was scared, thinking "Now that they've showed me the most beautiful things that I'll never see on earth, are they going to kill me?"

A light human-like shape was illuminating a person before I was aware of it. I got to witness my father there who had died 6 years ago. He was the breadwinner and took care of family matters. He successively held the position of a Confucian scholar principal. While he was alive, he issued an impetuous order for people to stop talking to him when he heard them say the "J" of Jesus. When this man was on his deathbed, he became miserable and his body swelled so much it could burst. Now before me I saw my father suffering from pains as if he was approaching death again.

Blue venomous serpents with triangular heads, enough to hide his ankles, were bloodying my father's body, crawling, wrapping around him and biting him all over. I was crying in despondency and calling out to him, but he didn't seem to hear me at all.

The second place I went to, a large number of people were gathered in a crowd trying to escape from a fire on an extremely huge iron plate similar to a grill. Simply, it was pandemonium. I met another acquaintance here. He was my father's older brother, who having lived like a miser, said that money was everything. He was not able to hear to my voice either.

At the place spotlighted by the third light, I witnessed a friend who had died in a traffic accident. Three dreadful yellowish brown serpents were squeezing him so strongly, wrapping coils around him. Thus, his face was turning pale. This friend has also loved drinking like me, but he was eventually the one who was dead due to alcohol.

At the place spotlighted by the forth light, I was able to see people who were immersed up to the waist in the deep swamp. Unknown small black beasts were making him bloody, biting and clawing him all over. I was able to recognize two people, a relative and a childhood friend among people who were inevitably suffering trying escaping the beasts, rolling their bodies left and right. I didn't know it at the time, but I found out that the relative had been going to church simply because they heard that attending church cured disease; they had no true faith. He wasted his time attending church half-heartedly, having one foot in church and the other foot in the world.

My father I saw in hell and my uncle I saw in heaven.

As I have recounted, the hell I saw was an unimaginable, atrocious place. I clearly saw my father, uncle, friend and relative in the dark and wretched place. There was nothing I could do but cry at them in tears. I, someone who thought everything ends after death, faced the truth. After witnessing hell, the carriage stopped at a place called the judgment platform (Revelation 20:13). Here, I saw something called reminiscence where all of my sins that I committed with my eyes, hands, feet and even mind since birth were recorded.

I was not able to count the number of my sins that I committed during my life because it was categorized into 132 categories, and each category had sub-categories. Among them, I got to see that the largest number of sins branched off of actions that I made due to drinking. Another thing I found out is that there were two items that are not sins in the real world, but sins in heaven. One is not to believe in Jesus and the other one is to curse at or be contemptuous with others who believe in Jesus.

All of my past sins were recorded–even with the date and time–such as not attending church, tearing and throwing Bibles and hymnbooks into a fire, cursing, being disrespectful, getting stringent with evangelical friends, even slapping their faces and kicking them. I asked a question that I was wondering all the time here. "Why do you show these places to me, someone who hated Jesus exceptionally and committed all kinds of sins, rather than to someone like my brother who went through fire and water to believe in Jesus?" An angel beside me gave me an answer. "It's not necessary for people like your brother to come here. Someone like you will not be able to witness to others about heaven and hell until they see it with their own eyes."

That was it. It was an answer corresponding to the Bible verse which states that someone like my brother who can believe without seeing will be blessed more. Soon afterward, the carriage began to move again. Suddenly, I heard a loud and sonorous voice ask pressingly "Will you believe?"

This voice was the same one that I heard before leaving for Seoul in order to kill those eight people.

Even though I've never accepted God as my Heavenly Father before that time, I was willing to receive God, naturally answering "Lord! I believe in you." God continued to say, "When you go back to the world, testify about heaven and the hell to others. Don't add or take anything away from what you saw." When departing, the last thing He said was, "I will keep watching over you."

I felt like I had been on a long journey for many days, but it was just 11:10 pm when I woke up, feeling scared. This all occurred in the space of 70 minutes. There was no concept of earthly time there. Coming to my senses, my mother was staring at me with an intense face. She said I was mumbling unknown words to myself and I wouldn't wake up even though she tried to wake me up. Right after that, I told her exactly what I had just seen. My mother, who has always shouted out whenever she heard just the "J" of Jesus, came to tears after hearing of the story of how her husband suffered. Just like that, my mother and I became disciples of Jesus and took baptismal education, then became involved in church the same day. She became a passionate person who enthusiastically attends church as much as I do.

At this moment, my life changed 180 degrees. I became a person whose lips naturally speak words only giving glory to Lord Jesus rather than to myself. I was able to become and continue to be a missionary doing the Lord's work. The last order that God gave me which is always present in my mind, "I will keep watching over you," is what brought me here.
