In his first season as the head coach of the Ducks, Kelly stumbled out of the gate, losing to Boise State by 11 points in a game ending in controversy with Ducks running backLeGarrette Blount punching Byron Hout on national television after being taunted. The Ducks showed only minor improvements with close wins against the Purdue Boilermakers and the Utah Utes. The Oregon Ducks only lost one more game, to the Stanford Cardinal in the regular season, to win the Pac-10 title by two games. The Ducks went to the 2010 Rose Bowl, where they lost by a score of 26 to 17 to the Ohio State Buckeyes. During the offseason, the team was mired in controversy off the field. Starting running back LaMichael James was involved in a domestic dispute in which he pleaded guilty to physical harassment of a former girlfriend and was suspended for the first game of 2010 season. Starting quarterbackJeremiah Masoli was suspended for the entire 2010 football season over thefts from a local fraternity house. On June 7, Masoli was cited for marijuana possession, driving with a suspended license and failing to stop when entering a roadway. In response, coach Chip Kelly officially removed him from the team.

Despite the loss of Masoli, the Ducks dominated their opponents in the 2010 season. On October 17, the team moved up to the No. 1 ranking in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll for the first time in school history. This occurred after the #1-ranked teams, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Alabama Crimson Tide lost in consecutive weeks.

The Ducks finished the regular season with a 12–0 record; winning the conference at 9–0, they were the only team in Pac-10 history to defeat every other conference team in a single season. Ranked No. 2 in the BCS rankings, the Ducks played Auburn in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, losing on an Auburn field goal as time expired, 22–19.

Despite his opening game suspension, Oregon RB LaMichael James won the 2010 Doak Walker Award as the nation's outstanding college running back. James was also Oregon's first unanimous All-American football player, appearing on all five all-America teams recognized by the NCAA.

How to be green with a drink:

Green drinks might look a bit like the gunk we scrape out of the bottom of our lawn mowers, but as many nutritionists, doctors and devotees of green drinks — and maybe even a few how to be green cows — would tell us, they taste a whole lot better and also pack a nutritional wallop.

We all know how to be green eating greens like kale, chard, broccoli, wheat grass, dandelion greens and sprouts is healthy. But we also know they’re harder to prepare than the French fries, frozen veggies and other side dishes that are more likely to make it to our plates.

But there’s good news in this how to be green way of eating: With a blender and just a few minutes of prep time, it’s possible to mix a bunch of greens together and drink them in one tasty smoothie that gives you essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, proteins and antioxidants, boosts the immune system, lowers cholesterol, improves blood pressure and cleanses the blood and liver.

In this culture, we’re told, we generally eat too much animal protein and flour-based foods and sugars. That can lead to too much acid in our systems, which in turn contributes to a variety of diseases. how to be green by eating more alkaline foods — primarily vegetables, especially the dark, leafy green ones, along with fresh fruits, seeds and nuts — helps maintain a good balance between acidity and alkalinity, and leads to better health.

The annual Eugene celebration of film aims to build on success

The Eugene International Film Festival is a opportunity to view independent projects created by a much more diverse group of writers, directors and producers than you normally would have the chance to see at Regal Cinemas.

It has everything: narrative dramas, animation and documentary films — even a handful of art films are included. And this year, there are more feature-length films than ever before.

For the filmmakers, this is an event at which to learn, to mix and to have their work showcased to receptive audiences. The organizers have made great efforts to bring in “key players” in the movie making business to increase networking opportunities.

“We treat the filmmakers really well, and in turn they talk about their experience and the next year we get better movies. And it just keeps growing in that way,” festival president Mike Dilley said.

The workshops and other activities designed for filmmakers of various content levels won’t appeal to most people, but what should be of interest is the movies themselves.

Most of them aren’t directly affiliated with Eugene, but with more than 50 titles scheduled to screen today through Sunday, there is bound to be something that interests you.

The festival, now in its sixth year, recently revamped its website, and all titles are there for your reading.

Eugene protest to change locations

Demonstrators say they will move out of the Park Blocks to a new spot nearby

Members of the Occupy Eugene move say they plan to move their makeshift camp in the city’s Park Blocks to a new location today, avoiding any conflict with the popular Saturday Market.

But before doing that, people supporting the current protest marched through downtown Thursday in the biggest action since the demonstration began a week ago. About 200 people took part in the noon march, stopping outside the local branches of major corporate banks to chant slogans and shout out lists of financial misdeeds.

Protest organizers wouldn’t say where the camp will move to, other than it will be near the Park Blocks and visible. They said earlier that they would move to avoid interfering with Saturday Market, which is held in the same location on the south side of East Eighth Avenue at the intersection with Oak Street.

But Saturday Market officials remained concerned and said the protesters hadn’t shared their plans directly with market managers. Beth Little, the market’s general manager, was relieved to hear that the camp would be moved.

“That sounds great,” she said.

While people taking part in the protest have been in contact with people who take part in Saturday Market, Little said she hadn’t had direct contact with protest organizers. On Thursday she was still concerned about a possible conflict.

A notice on the bulletin board in the Occupy Eugene camp said a proposal to move had been made Wednesday and would be voted on at the Thursday evening “general assembly” meeting, one of two daily meetings where protesters meet to discuss issues and vote on proposals. According to the notice, the plan is to begin moving this morning and be done by this evening.

Although the protesters are camped illegally, they believe the Constitution allows them to use the park space to exercise their free speech rights. Police so far have declined to force them out. A police spokeswoman said police have been in contact with protest organizers.

Capt. Rich Stronach said Thursday night that police don’t anticipate any problems come Saturday. Occupy Eugene organizers “have given us every indication they will be leaving and we have no reason to think they will not. They have been very polite and very cooperative.”

Organizers have not shared with police where they intend to relocate, Stronach said, and it remains to be seen whether a new location will be acceptable. “But if there’s an issue, we’re going to work it out,” he said.

Stronach acknowledged that police have heard from a handful of people concerned about police not enforcing park rules. “But we’re also hearing a lot of support from the Occupy group that they’re very appreciative of the fact that we’re working with them,” he said.

The protest is following in the wake of the Occupy Wall Street movement that started in New York and spread across the country and around the world. Those taking part say they object to corporate greed, pointing in particular to the outsize pay and bonus packages given to Wall Street and corporate executives whose companies received huge taxpayer-financed bailouts.

On Thursday, protesters marched from the campsite to the downtown branches of Wells Fargo Bank, Chase, Bank of America and Charles Schwab & Co. on what they called the Tour of Shame. The crowd stopped in front of each one to chant slogans such as “Banks got bailed out; we got sold out” and “Shame.”

At each stop, a member of the group recited a list of financial sins attributed to the particular institution, with the crowd chanting the words back. Citing information from lawsuits, government reports and news accounts, they said the banks had been accused of engaging in a variety of financial crimes or questionable practices, some of which netted substantial fines, but that they had escaped criminal convictions.

The only reaction at the banks was at Chase, where an employee came out and removed two sidewalk signs advertising bank products. It also appeared that a door connected to an automatic opening button was locked. Protesters had triggered the mechanism, which is used to provide access to disabled customers, so the door would stay open as they began reciting their grievances.

The crowd appeared well-behaved throughout the march, remaining on sidewalks, crossing with traffic lights and staying off private property. No city police presence was visible....full story

When he met the media Saturday night following Oregon’s 41-27 win over Arizona State, quarterback Darron Thomas had neither ice nor a brace on the left knee he’d injured in the third quarter, knocking him from the game.

Thomas was in good spirits, and expressed optimism about his chances of playing when the Ducks go on the road to face Colorado this week. But neither the state of his knee nor his comments indicated many specifics about his condition, and it was more of the same Sunday evening during Chip Kelly’s weekly postgame teleconference with reporters.

“We don’t have any sense,” Kelly said when asked about Thomas’ potential availability this week. “We don’t talk about it.”

In Thomas’ place, redshirt freshman Bryan Bennett got the most meaningful playing time of his career. He led the Ducks to two touchdowns in the third quarter as they came back from a 24-21 deficit, and Oregon added two field goals in the fourth quarter.

“I was very impressed with his poise and how he handled situations,” Kelly said, noting that Bennett managed the clock well as Oregon attempted to control time of possession in the fourth quarter.

Should Bennett need to start at Colorado on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., his backup would be true freshman Marcus Mariota. A native of Hawaii, Mariota has dressed for every game but has yet to play this fall while sharing reps with Thomas and Bennett in practices.

“Marcus’ progress has been really, really good,” Kelly said, calling him “real intelligent, real athletic. If we had to go to Marcus, I know I would feel real comfortable.”

The running back was blazing through holes in a flash, the quarterback operating the offense with efficiency.

It was everything that’s come to be expected from Oregon. And it was also much, much different.

Backups Kenjon Barner and Bryan Bennett led the way on Saturday, helping the No. 9 Ducks to a 41-27 win over No. 18 Arizona State before an Autzen Stadium record crowd of 60,055. Barner played in place of LaMichael James, who did not suit up because of an elbow injury, and Bennett played nearly the entire second half after Darron Thomas left the game with a knee injury.

Those aren’t the guys the Ducks figured to have leading them midway through the 2011 season. But considering those injuries, Oregon is overjoyed to be 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-12 North, preparing to close out October against Colorado and Washington State — who are a combined 1-5 in conference play.

“I was really proud of our guys,” UO coach Chip Kelly said. “We talk about playing a full 60 minutes, and that’s what they did.”

Barner ran for 171 yards and a touchdown, and fabulous freshman De’Anthony Thomas added 73 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Is anyone surprised? Mounting worries over another global recession haven’t shaken Google.

The online search and advertising leader’s third-quarter earnings, released Thursday, are the latest reminder of how Google Inc. has used its position as the Internet’s dominant gateway to build a business that endures economic turbulence better than most companies.

Investors signaled approval, sending Google’s stock price up 6 percent. The stock climbed $33.37 to $592.36 in extended trading after the release of results.

Google earned $2.7 billion, or $8.33 per share, in the three months ending in September. That was up 26 percent from nearly $2.2 billion, or $6.72 per share, a year earlier.

If not for expenses covering employee stock compensation, Google would have earned $9.72 per share. That figure easily beat the average estimate of $8.77 per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue climbed 33 percent from last year to $9.7 billion.

After subtracting the commissions that Google pays its advertising partners, Google’s revenue stood at $7.5 billion — about $200 million above analyst projections.

Analysts had been bracing for a slight slowdown in Google’s growth.

Instead, Google’s year-over-year revenue growth in the latest quarter was better than the 32 percent increase posted for the April-June stretch. It was the fourth straight quarter of year-over-year revenue growth for the company.

Over the years, the Pit Crew has not exactly earned the most honorable of reputations among the UO’s Pac-12 opponents. Horwitch and Hatfield both said having an incentive program based around some sweet shoes could help.

“We want to have the best student section in the country in two aspects,” Horwitch said. “One, they show up. Two, they’re smart fans,” he said, meaning they don’t cross that “razor’s edge” of inappropriate behavior.

Nike plans to ship more of the shoes as the basketball season unfolds, about 500 pairs total, Horwitch said. Pit Crew members will be able to earn them, and the jackets, by showing exemplary attendance at the games, good behavior, and maybe even for such extra efforts as having the best sign at a game, he said.

They say there are no free lunches in this world, but there are apparently free shoes. If you know the right people. And go to the right school.

At the University of Oregon, known to some around the nation as Nike U because of the millions of dollars Nike co-founder and alumnus Phil Knight donates to the school’s athletic and academic programs, student-athletes are decked out in expensive, trendy Nike-designed uniforms that have even become a recruiting tool for coaches.

And now, in what Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s vice president of innovation design and special projects, says is a first for college athletics, members of the Pit Crew, the UO’s student cheering section for men’s and women’s basketball games, are getting their own limited-edition, specially designed shoe: The Pit Crew shoe.

“This is yet just another opportunity for us to get involved in another way with the students,” said Hatfield, a UO pole vaulter in the early 1970s and a longtime Nike designer known for his innovative shoe designs — and the creative mind behind that attention-grabbing floor design in the UO’s $227 million Matthew Knight Arena that opened in January.

“And that’s really what we want to do for the University of Oregon — attract a more diverse student body,” Hatfield said Thursday in a phone interview. “It’s all part of the plan.”

The Pit Crew shoe will not go on sale to the general public, but only into the hands of about 500 lucky Pit Crew members this basketball season, beginning with tonight’s “Matthew Knight Madness,” a free introduction for fans to the 2011-12 UO men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The shoe was designed by taking the chassis of a late-1980s Air Jordan 3 basketball shoe and adding distinctive colors and graphics, Hatfield said. The shoes are yellow, black, white and gray, representative of color schemes Nike has added to UO football uniforms in recent years, and have a Pit Crew logo on the sides: two yellow Duck feet on the back of the heel, and a yellow “O” symbol on the tongue.

It’s all part of a “rebranding” of the Pit Crew, which has about 1,000 members, Pit Crew president Alex Horwitch said.

Horwitch said he discussed rebranding the Pit Crew, born in the 1990s at McArthur Court, the UO’s longtime basketball arena, with UO Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Jim Bartko last year. Bartko put Horwitch, a UO senior from Calabasas, Calif., in touch with Nike Creative Director Todd Van Horne, via e-mail, last fall, and Van Horne invited Horwitch to Nike’s Beaverton headquarters for a meeting with him and Hatfield.

Horwitch said he thought they would just discuss, perhaps, a new logo. But Hatfield asked, “What if we just outfitted you like we did a sports team?” Horwitch recalled.

Horwitch’s response? “That would be incredible. What did you have in mind?”

What Hatfield had in mind arrived early last month, in a shipment of boxes from Nike, filled with about 60 pairs of the new Pit Crew shoes. And not only that, but more than 200 black Nike sweat jackets emblazoned with “Pit Crew” in yellow on one side and white Nike swooshes on the other.

“We weren’t really expecting the jackets,” Pit Crew member and UO senior Matt Bronstein, of Danville, Calif., said. “They just kind of came with (the package).”

Also in the shipment were the usual 1,000 yellow Pit Crew T-shirts that are handed out every fall to the first students who show for the season’s first basketball event. Those will be handed out tonight, Horwitch said.

Also given out tonight will be 10 pairs of Pit Crew shoes, he said. Those will go not just to Pit Crew members, but to any fans who show up and win the shoes by raffle. Ten of the black Pit Crew jackets also will be raffled off.

As for the 60 pairs of shoes that arrived last month, those already have been given to the most-devoted Pit Crew members, the ones who never missed a single men’s basketball game last year, Horwitch said. But recipients were told not to wear them, or photograph them, before tonight’s event, he said.

Major gift to UO project | A couple donates $10 million to fund a performance hall as part of an EMU expansion awaiting a student vote:

Berwick is a real estate developer and founder of Berwick Pacific Corp. in San Mateo, Calif. Phyllis Berwick is a former teacher.

Their gift will go toward what was described as a “shoebox hall” in the European tradition. With state-of-the-art acoustics, it would offer a venue that falls between the 530-seat Beall Hall at the music school and the 2,500-seat Silva Concert Hall at the Hult Center downtown.

That would allow the university to stage more Oregon Bach Festival concerts on campus, in essence bringing more of the signature music event home. John Evans, the festival’s executive director, said the area doesn’t have a venue suitable for concerts that are too small for the Hult Center but too big for Beall Hall.

“That’s why we really need a concert hall on campus,” he said.

Berwick said the student union holds a special place in the couple’s hearts.

“For me, this space is so familiar,” Berwick said during remarks in the EMU’s Taylor Lounge, which looks much as it did in 1951. “The memories just come back instantly when I walk back in here.”

He said he’s excited by the project, which already is lining up some of the world’s best acoustics engineers. The aim is to make the venue one of the top performance spaces anywhere.

“I know it will be the best hall of its size in the state of Oregon,” Berwick said. “But we think it might be the best of its size in the United States, and maybe the world.”

Next month’s student vote will be a key step in the project. The lack of such a vote kept the university from seeking the Legislature’s approval in the last session, and the ambitious plan might hit a dead end or have to be broken into smaller pieces if students reject the fee proposal.

The fee would provide $112.5 million to repay state bonds that would be issued for the project. Students would be charged $100 per term, although it would be phased in at $60 per term starting in fall 2012 and rising to $100 per term in 2013.

The university plans to raise a total of $35 million in private funding and has $13.5 million from existing student building fees set aside for the project. Planning and conceptual design work already are under way.

The fee has been controversial on a campus where rising tuition already strains many students’ budgets. Robin Holmes, the UO’s vice president for student affairs, said it’s clear that students have mixed feelings about the fee and she isn’t sure how the vote will go.

“I have no idea,” she said. “But I’m optimistic.”

When Andy Berwick first walked into the Erb Memorial Union as a student in 1951, the building was just a year old.

Now Berwick and his wife, Phyllis, are donating $10 million toward a project to completely renovate and expand the University of Oregon icon, offering new generations of students the chance to walk into a new student union. The gift will go toward a 1,200-seat performance hall that’s planned for the EMU.

Among the primary uses for the hall will be concerts by students and faculty in the UO School of Music and Dance as well as the UO-sponsored Oregon Bach Festival. The Berwicks have been major supporters of both.

“This project is part of our great passion for the University of Oregon, the Erb Memorial Union and the Bach Festival,” Andy Berwick said after the gift was announced Thursday in the EMU.

The entire project also includes a major expansion of the Student Recreation Center and would cost $161 million. A major portion of the funding would come from a new student fee that will be the subject of a campus vote next month.

Berwick and his wife, who goes by Phyzz, met in 1952 while students at the UO. They both served on a dance committee, and Andy Berwick was among the students who played a primary role in managing the new student union. They have been married 55 years and have their primary home just south of San Francisco, but they spend part of each year at a home in Eugene.
