Ondatrópica cradles the talents of some greats from the seventies golden age of Medellin's Discos Fuentes such as Michi Sarmiento on sax, Wilson Viveros on timbales and Pedro 'Ramaya' Beltran on flute alongside a breaking wave of young tropicalistas including Nidia Gongora on vocals and the mighty Chongo on percussion to create a new Caribbean sound spanning the musical generations.

Ondatrópica, with added talents from Mexico and Venezuela, has been nurtured in its development by the British Council and also appears in London as part of the BT River of Music.

Now in its third year, BBC Radio 3's World Routes Academy mentoring project turns to Latin America. Born in London of Colombian descent, 2012's young apprentice is self-taught 20-year-old accordionist, singer and guitarist José Hernando Arias Noguera.

His mentor, the renowned Bogotá-based accordion king Egidio Cuadrado - who brings his own band - is probably best known for his collaborations with Carlos Vives, the Latin American superstar actor-turned-singer.

Fusing the folk tradition of vallenato with elements of rock and pop has proved a game-changer for music now enjoyed all over the Spanish-speaking world and beyond.

CUMBÉ Energetic Afro-Colombian folklore combining dance, irresistible rhythm and traditional songs. This band from different parts of
Colombia has a sole purpose of bringing people together, in an attempt
to evoke the warmth, power and simplicity of traditional Colombian music to the eclectic city of London.

The Festival looks for recovering and spreading the ancient Afro culture expressed in Bullerengue, black dance of voices, drums and claps that had been forgotten by younger generations. Likewise, the Festival aims to join bullerengueros
coming from the Colombian Caribbean area together in one geographic
location, and to spread this folk tradition among all kinds of
audiences.

It began in 1988 in the Colombian village of Puerto Escondido in the
department of Córdoba. It is held annually during three days at the end
of June, so that it coincides with Saint John´s Feast. It is organized
by Fundación Festival Nacional del Bullerengue de Puerto Escondido.
As a member of the Caribbean Node of the National Network of Colombian
Traditional Music Festivals, it focuses on the music from the
West-Caribbean region of the country, especially on the genre of Bullerengue, with its airs Bullerengue sentao, Chalupa and Fandango.

The last sessions was a sell out with the main act playing over two hours. A proper latino fiesta! For the next outing we have an amazing line up.

Also on the bill it is pleasure to invite back Los Independientes Del Vallenato playing a mix of cumbia and vallenato classics feat Colombian harpist Diego Laverde. These two sister cities have a strong carnival tradition, both grew up along major rivers, the Mississippi and Magdalena respectively and as such have vibrant, diverse communities that make their people, gastronomy and music so addictive!

The Latin Corner pays homage to these 2 incredible cities during Carnival time with live shows and traditional foods such as delicious Poboys from New Orleans, ribs in Jack Daniels sauce from neighbouring Tennesee and of course Carimañola cassava bites as well as Red Snapper & Coconut rice from Barranquilla and the surrounding Colombian Caribbean. World Circuit Records are due to release ‘Cumbia Cumbia 1 & 2’ as a re-mastered double CD and limited edition double LP on March 19, 2012. Originally released by World Circuit as two separate albums – ‘Cumbia Cumbia’ in 1989 and ‘Cumbia Cumbia 2’ in 1993 - this collection brings together some of the greatest recordings made by Colombia’s legendary record label, Discos Fuentes, between 1954 and 1988.

Cumbia, the music and the dance synonymous with Colombia, has been around almost since the 17th century. Today, it’s a badge of identity for Colombians everywhere, but is now also enjoying a global renaissance; filling dance floors and captivating a new generation of music fans. Discos Fuentes was founded in Cartagena in 1934 by the visionary musician, arranger and producer, Antonio Lopez Fuentes.

It was the first important record label in the country and grew into a company of immense significance for Colombian music, responsible for thousands of hits and scores of legendary singers and musicians over six decades. Fuentes hand-picked his musicians and singers then meticulously arranged, produced and recorded their music in-house. This collection presents thirty of these three-minute-masterpieces, showcasing the gamut of styles that make up the distinctive and irresistible cumbia sound; a sound typified by a loping 2/4 gait and a pulsing rocksteady bassline, overlaid with heavy rural percussion, brass, accordion, clarinet, electric guitar and vocals. Disc 1 features a broad range of cumbia styles with recordings from 1960 through to 1988, whilst disc 2 digs further into the classics of the past focusing almost exclusively on the 1950s and 1960s.

Lisandro Meza played an important role in the evolution of Cumbia, the traditional big band dance music of Colombia. A master of vallenato sabanero, an accordion-driven style of music that originated in Mexico, Meza forged a sound that has been described as "a cross between rural Dominican merengue, Louisiana zydeco, and Tex-Mex norteño."

Meza initially attracted attention as a founding member of Los Corraleros de Majagual, One of Colombia's most popular bands in the 1960s, the group served as the breeding ground for such influential artists as Fruko, the "Godfather of Salsa." Leaving Los Corraleros De Majagual to focus on a solo career, Meza has continued to influence the music of Colombia and Latin America. His hits include the drinking songs, "El Guayabo de la Ye (The Hangover of the Year)" and "La Botella Picomoche" (The Big-Mouthed Bottle).

Dancing Time With Soundway: The Original Sound of Cumbia launch party will be held at the fabulous Designers Block on Cremer Street, Shoreditch. The first 50 tickets can be bought for the special early bird price of £6. Advance tickets after that shall be £8 and £10 on the door.

Soundway set sail for Colombia once again, delving deeper into the South American country’s rich musical past. Boasting 55 tracks spread over two CDs and two triple LPs, ‘The Original Sound of Cumbia’ is Soundway’s definitive guide to the origins of Colombian cumbia and porro and the result of five years pain staking re-search by Will ‘Quantic’ Holland. Disc 1 tells the story of some the earliest Colombian cumbia recorded, a genre that captured a nation, spreading from its birthplace on the Caribbean coast in land to central Colombia and the capital Bogata. Disc 2 sees the evolution of cumbia. Greats of Colombian music like Alberto Pacheco, Toño Fernandez & Anibal Velasquez brought the music forward, bringing new influences and instruments to the genre. What had once been considered the music of the underclasses had risen up as the new sound of a nation. After five years of becoming slowly submerged in Colombian musical culture, learning the accordion, setting up a band and a studio, and scouring the country in search it’s recorded legacy, Will ‘Quantic’ Holland (Quantic Soul Orchestra & Quantic y su Combo Barbaro) has compiled the fruits of his labour into this unique compilation that tells the story of cumbia in the years of the phonograph record’s supremacy. BUNBUN THE MC is originally a Japanese Reggae/Dancehall Dee-jay as Known as Legendary in Osaka.

His flow is tricky and his style off-beat, and his lyrics are often equally esoteric, one song highhighting the unusual practice of "pearling" -a custom where by gangsters and jailbirds insert carefully sculpted parts of a toothbrush into their private parts.

As Blair said late La Chiva Gantiva are inspired by genres such as Colombian cumbia and musica Llanera, as rock, funk, salsa, champeta, chirimia, sanjuanero and afrobeat and the result is a delicious and very danceable popurri this summer at any festival stage will be out of place. Soon in the UK.

Vallenato legend Lorenzo Morales dies

Legendary Vallenato singer, composer, and musician Lorenzo Morales has died at the age of 97.

Morales, known as “Moralito,” died in hospital surrounded by his wife and 37 children in the early hours of Friday morning 26/0/11.

He had been ill for several weeks with respiratory and kidney problems as well as chronic anaemia, and was hospitalized several days ago.

Having first achieved recognition for his accordion playing at the age of 17, Morales would go on to become famous for such songs as “La Gota Fria,” “El Errante,” “La Primavera,” and “La Carta y La Mala Situacion.”

On announcing his illness earlier in the week, Morales’ daughter Alix Cecilia told the press, “my dad has asked us not to mourn but that we clap, dress in red, and bring flowers of the same color.”
