Guernsey beat Gibraltar to seal their place in semis

Denmark, Italy and Jersey complete semi final places

An unbroken fifth wicket stand of 78 in just 53 balls between Jeremy Frith and Ross Kneller helped Guernsey to a six wicket win over Gibraltar at College Field and a place in tomorrow's semi-finals.

Chasing 117 for the win, Guernsey lost two wickets in the first over as both Tim Ravenscroft and Tom Kimber fell to Mark Bacarese (2-15), to silence the sizeable home support. Andrew Reyes (1-17) trapped Lee Savident in front to leave it 10 for 3, and when Ross Hawkins bowled Guernsey captain Stuart Le Prevost for 18, the game was very much in the balance.

The experienced Frith however remained calm and in conjunction with Kneller ensured the target was reached with 15 balls to spare. Frith struck two fours in his 44 from 43 balls, while Kneller was the more aggressive, hitting 5 fours in his unbeaten 40 from just 29 balls.

Guernsey had bowled steadily, with all the bowlers keeping Gibraltar in check. Gary Rich (2-15) and James Nussbaumer (2-28) were the most successful, with Stuart Bisson (1-12) and Tim Ravenscroft (1-24) the other wicket takers.

Dave Coram (36) anchored the Gibraltar innings, while Mark Bacarese (14) and Iain Latin (12) were the other players to reach double figures. A final total of 116 proved competitive, but not quite enough in the final analysis.

Opening batsman Frederik Klokker smashed an unbeaten 91 to lead Denmark to a 92 run win over Germany, putting them top of Group B and cementing their place in the semi-finals.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first at Farmers, Denmark amassed 166-1 in 20 overs, Klokker leading from the front with a score of 91 off 62 balls including six 4s and three 6s. Klokker had put on 69 for the first wicket with fellow opener Shehzad Ahmed (30), who was then stumped in the 9th over off leg-spinner Kashif Haider. This brought captain Michael Pedersen to the crease and he continued his good form of yesterday to make 38 in 33 balls including two 6s.

In reply Germany struggled from the outset, slumping to 28-3 in 5.1 overs as they lost the key men of Rajudeen, Khan and Chaudhry. Matters got worse when they were 41-7 in 8.4 overs as Denmark's spinners ripped through the German middle order.

Germany finished on 74-9 in 16.1 overs with Rana-Javed Iqbal unable to bat due to an injury, handing Denmark a comprehensive victory and setting up a semi-final clash with Guernsey tomorrow. Bashir Shah was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-8 in 4 overs and skipper Pedersen took 3-9 in 3 overs.

Jersey beat France by 8 wickets in Group B to book their place in the semi-finals and a clash against Group A winners Italy. Chasing a total of 98 in glorious sunshine at FB Fields, opener Ed Farley made an unbeaten 57, including six 4s and a 6, as Jersey eased to victory in 14.5 overs. Farley rode his luck at times, almost run-out on three occasions and dropped on the boundary when on 45, but he managed to survive and, with captain Peter Gough (16*), saw Jersey home comfortably.

Although it was a straight-forward victory France had earlier looked dangerous having won the toss and elected to bat, opener Ramesh Sithambaranathan (25) smashing Ryan Driver for six into the car park off the third ball of the innings. France were going well at 32-0 in 5 overs but then left-arm spinner Ben Stevens removed Sithambaranathan, stumped by Ed Farley as he overstretched playing a drive.

This shifted the momentum as only 17 came from the next 5 overs, Jersey turning the screw with medium-pacers Carlyon, Vautier and Perchard all bowling a good line and length. France then continued to struggle to find the boundary and finished on 98-7 in 20 overs. It was a total that was to be 50 or 60 short of par.

Italy have secured their place in the semi-finals after a big win over Norway at KGV in a winner takes all match today.

Put into bat, Italy started their innings badly when Hayden Patrizi was bowled by Waheed Aamir in the first over, but the second wicket pair recovered well with a 70 run partnership before Andrew Northcote was out for 39, made from 29 balls. The next partnership really took the game away from Norway with Damian Crowley scoring 77 from 59 balls and Peter Petricola smashing 48 from just 29 balls. They took Italy's score to 185-2 in their 20 overs.

That was to prove too difficult a target for Norway to chase. Italian captain Alessandro Bonora rotated his bowlers frequently, rarely giving anyone a two over spell and not allowing the batsmen to settle. Adeel Ibrar scored 33, but he was the only Norwegian player to get a start, and they succumbed for 87-9, with their wicket-keeper unable to bat after injuring himself in the field. Italy will now play Jersey in tomorrow's semi-final, whilst Norway will play Belgium in the crossover fixtures.

A remarkable all round and record breaking display from Amar Naeem has given Austria their third win of the tournament at Port Soif today.

Naeem smashed an unbeaten century from just 63 balls, his second fifty coming from a remarkable 19 balls. At one point he took 22 off a single over. His chanceless innings took Austria to a formidable 176-3 from their 20 overs and was the first century of the tournament, and the first for Austria in Twenty20 cricket. Imran Asif also chipped in with an unbeaten 35 from 30 balls.

It was a difficult run chase for the Croatian batsmen, but they set about their run chase in fine style, with opener Christopher Pivac racing to 64 from 46 balls when he was second out with the score on 94-2. His dismissal sparked a collapse in the Croatian batting line-up, as they collapsed to 125 all out with Amar Naeem recording a remarkable five stumpings. Austria finished third in their group and will play France in the crossover fixtures.

Israel crashed to their fifth consecutive defeat as they lost to Belgium by 5 wickets at Les Quennevais.

Israel lost the toss and were put into bat, a good decision by the Belgians as they dismissed the two Israeli openers, Hyman and Nagavkar, for 0. Eshkol Solomon (25) and Daniel Hotz (40) then put on 36 to steady the innings but wickets fell at regular intervals and Israel finished 106 all out in 19.3 overs. The Belgian bowlers shared around the wickets with Waqas Shafiq being the most economical, taking 7-2 in 4 overs.

In response Belgium got off to a solid start, openers Nirvam Shah (11) and Ali Raza (14) sharing in a stand of 30. They then suffered a mini-collapse as they fell to 57-5, with young leg-spinner Josh Evans picking up three of the top-order wickets to fall. However, a run-a-ball 28 from Simon Newport and Nadeem Khan's 24 off 19 balls dashed any hopes Israel had of victory, the Belgian pair getting their side home with 2 overs to spare. Belgium's win sees them finish 3rd in Group B, setting up a fixture against Norway in the crossover matches.

Israel meanwhile will play Gibraltar at Les Quennevais.

Dopo la sconfitta di ieri con i padroni di casa di Guernsey la squadra italiana ha vinto la partita fondamentale con la Norvegia e, grazie al miglior Net Run Rate, ha addirittura conquistato il primo posto del girone.

Nel pomeriggio trasferimento a Jersey in traghetto e domani le semifinali:

Italia - Jersey e Danimarca - Guernsey

Da queste quattro squadre usciranno le due finaliste che si garantiranno cosi un posto per il torneo di Dubai che consentira' di accedere ai mondiali T20.

Norway win sets up vital clash with Italy
Jersey comprehensively beaten by Denmark
Norway set up a winner takes all clash with Italy tomorrow after they comprehensively outplayed Austria to record the easiest of 9 wicket wins at College Field.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Austria weren't allowed to settle as Norway attacked from the start. Waheed Aamir removed Amar Naeem in the first over, and that set the tone for the whole innings. Lakmal Kasthuriarchchige top scored with 13, and Amandeep (11) was the only other player to reach double figures, as extras (14) was the highest contributor to their meagre total of 64 all out in 16.3 overs.
Syed Waqas Ahmed (2-6), Shahbaz Butt (2-16) and Waheed Aamir (2-27) all bowled well, while Wasim Gill (1-12) and Babar Shahzad (1-0) were the other wicket takers.
A special note of praise for Norwegian wicket-keeper Moosa Rashid, who was involved in both a brilliant run out and stumping. In addition he took the final catch off the bowling of Shahzad.
Low totals have sometimes proved tricky this week, but not in this instance, as Norway raced to victory in just 9 overs.
Zeeshan Ali (21*), Adeel Ibrar (20*), and Zaheer Ashiq (20), all batted positively, striking 10 fours and 2 sixes between them. Ashiq was the only wicket to fall, brilliantly run out by a direct hit from Soggi, but it proved the only consolation for Austria in a game completely dominated from start to end by Norway.
Denmark easily beat Jersey by 58 runs at Farmers this afternoon to leave all to play for in the final round of matches in Group B.
Having been put into bat by Jersey skipper Peter Gough, the Danish openers Frederik Klokker (57 off 49 balls) and Shehzad Ahmed (35 off 32 balls) raced along to 57-0 in 8 overs. Pedersen (53 off 32 balls) and Klokker batted with great poise to put on 91 for the second wicket, as they put the Jersey bowlers to the sword. Denmark eventually finished their 20 overs on 168-3 with Aftab Ahmed also chipping in with a valuable 11 off 7 balls.
In response Jersey never really got going, losing openers Dean Morrison (8) and Ed Farley (3) with only 16 on the board. Denmark's spinners then put the squeeze on Jersey and any realistic hopes they had of getting close to the Danish total rested upon the experienced duo of Ryan Driver (16) and Tony Carlyon (13). So when both were dismissed within the space of 6 balls, Carlyon caught off the bowling of Ahmed and Driver bowled trying to hit Chawla for six, the game was all but over.
Jersey battled on and recovered from 59-6 to end on 110-9 in 20 overs, Ben Stevens making 27 off 18 balls including one 4 and two 6s, but it was all too little too late. Denmark's four spinners had proven the key and Chawla returned the best figures of them, picking up 3-10 in his four overs.
After the disappointment of their shock defeat to Austria in the morning, Guernsey have bounced back in fine style with a comfortable win over Italy at Port Soif.
In brilliant sunshine, Guernsey won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a flying start with the opening pair of Tim Ravenscroft and Lee Savident putting on 65 for the first wicket before Savident was out for 19 in the eighth over.
Ravenscroft stayed in, smashing the Italian bowling to all parts with a 37 ball innings of 70 when he was out five overs later. Captain Stuart Le Prevost also joined in the big hitting, scoring 45 from 28 balls, whilst James Nussbaumer made a brief cameo knock of 21 from 11 balls. Nussbaumer's late hitting took Guernsey to 188-6 from their 20 overs, the highest score of the tournament so far, and a stiff target for Italy to chase.
Italy started that run chase reasonably well with a second wicket partnership of 61 between Andrew Northcote and Alessandro Bonora giving them a good start. But a mini collapse, sparked by the introduction of the Guernsey spin bowlers saw them go to 96-4. From then on, the required run rate kept on climbing and Italy struggled to keep up, eventually making 150-9 from their 20 overs to lose by 38 runs.
In Group A Croatia are left in the relegation play-offs after a seven wicket defeat to Gibraltar at KGV today.
Batting first, Paul Vujnovich played an anchor role for Croatia in the early part of their innings, scoring 34 from 44 balls before he was out with the score on 76-4. The middle order then took the score on to 120-5 in their 20 overs, which should have been a defendable target for their bowlers.
But Gibraltar set about their chase well, and chased down the target with one over to spare. Dave Coram top scored with 36 at a run a ball.
Germany held their nerve to beat Belgium by 5 runs in a nail-biting finish at FB Fields.
With Belgium needing 6 to win off the last over and 2 wickets remaining, Faisal Khaliq was run out off the first ball attempting a run through to the keeper. Rana-Javed Iqbal then kept a cool head to bowl two consecutive dot balls before dismissing number 11 Waqas Shafiq, who could only clip the ball to the sub fielder at square leg.
Belgium had looked to be in a good position at 86-3 after 12 overs, Jamie Farmiloe (31) and Shiaval Mehta (31) running excellently between the wickets and sharing in a 47-run partnership. But spinner Syed Shah then shifted the momentum back in Germany's favour as he took the key wicket of Mehta. Belgian hopes then rested on the shoulders of Farmiloe but he too succumbed to Shah, stumped in the 17
th over as he tried to come down the track.
Faisal Khaliq (13) and Shahid Muhammad (16*) then hit some lusty blows to take Belgium within touching distance but it was to be Germany's day. Shah finished with the excellent figures of 3-19 from 4 overs and fellow spinner Hassan took 2-22.
Germany's batting line-up had earlier fired for the second time that day, opener Dilshan Rajudeen striking an impressive 58 off 47 balls in their total of 144. Rajudeen brought up his 50 and the team hundred with a high and handsome six over long-off against Nadeem Khan, a knock that included a total of two 4s and two 6s. Lower-order batsman Fazal Rathore also got some vital runs late in the innings, ending on 16 not out from 12 balls.
Faisal Khaliq was the pick of the Belgian bowlers, dismissing the captain Asif Khan (22) and Imran Choudhry (0) in successive balls. He combined an intelligent mix of line and length bowling with some slower balls to finish with figures of 3-22 from 4 overs.
France beat Israel by 32 runs at Grainville this afternoon, leaving Israel languishing at the bottom of Group B.
Having lost the toss and being put into bat, France started in the worst fashion possible as opener Arunkamar Ayyavooraju was out first ball, LBW to David Massil. France then moved to 13-1 before captain Waseem Bhatti (4) was caught by Eshkol Solomon off the bowling of Eliezer Samson. Opener Abdul Rehman (35 off 28 balls) then got into his stride and hit four 6s whilst Williamdeep Singh made 24 to help France to 112 in 19.2 overs.
Massil finished with the best figures of the Israeli bowlers, returning 3-11, whilst Samson took 3-17.
In reply Israel struggled from the off, reduced to 14-3 within the first few overs. It was a position from which they never recovered, captain Herschel Gutman top-scoring with 14 as leg-spinner Zika Ali continued his good form with figures of 4-18 from 4 overs.

Austria shock hosts Guernsey

Italy maintain unbeaten record

Division Two qualifiers Austria shocked co-hosts Guernsey when they held their nerve to claim a nail biting eight run win at KGV. Satyam Subhash proved their hero as he kept his cool to restrict Guernsey to just one run in the final over, having needed 10 to win from the last six balls.

An opening salvo from Amandeep who smashed 3 sixes and a four in his 40 from just 30 deliveries, meant Guernsey were always on the defensive. Lakmal Kasthuriarachchige (25) shared in an opening stand of 41 with Amandeep, and the positive approach of both clearly rattled Guernsey.

Even the introduction into the attack of the normally reliable Jeremy Frith didn't pay dividends, as he conceded 17 runs in the only two overs he bowled. Gary Rich (2-19) and Tim Ravenscroft (3-25) put the brakes on the middle order as Guernsey recovered their composure somewhat, but Imran Asif held things together as Austria finished on 130 for 9 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Guernsey lost Lee Savident for just 4, but looked to be well on course as Tim Ravenscoft struck four boundaries as he raced to 24 from just 16 balls. However, his dismissal by leg-spinner Lakmal Kasthuriarachchige (2-17), saw Guernsey forced to consolidate their position. Skipper Stuart Le Prevost (16), Jeremy Frith (39) and GH Smit (25*) all batted solidly, but with the run rate steadily increasing, the game was always tantalisingly out of their control, as Guernsey finished on 122 for 6.

The win for Austria sets up what should be a fascinating afternoon's play, with the qualification places very much in the balance.

A fine all-round performance from Andy Northcote inspired Italy to their third consecutive victory against Gibraltar at College Field. The off spinner claimed 4 for 14 to help restrict Gibraltar to a below par 81 for 8. He was helped by some energetic Italian fielding, with Damian Crowley and Michael Raso taking superb catches on the boundaries.

Opening bowler Din Alaud also turned in a fine spell, to finish with 3 for 20, as all the Italian bowlers helped keep the shackles on the Gibraltar side. Gayashan Munasinghe (1-21) was the other wicket taker, and both Peter Petricola (0-14) and Dilan Fernando (0-11) bowled well. Kieron Ferrary (16), and Dave Coram (11) shared an opening stand of 27, but thereafter it was a story of struggle in the face of the accurate attack. Iain Latin top scored with 20 from 16 balls, including the only six of the innings, while Ian Farrell made 11 not out.

An opening stand of 61 between Northcote and Damien Fernando meant the result was never in any doubt, with both finding the boundaries with regularity. Fernando struck four boundaries in one over from Aaron Baglietto, taking full advantage of the fielding restrictions in the power play overs. He had scored 24 before being bowled by Kayron Stagno in his first over. Alessandro Bonora was well run out by Bacarese, but that was the end of the success for Gibraltar, as Northcote (38*) secured the eight wicket win with 10.2 overs remaining.

The win takes Italy clear at the top of the table, ahead of Austria, Guernsey and Norway, who have two wins each.

In yesterday's rain shortened affair, Croatia were well on top against Norway, scoring 70-0 in nine overs before the game was washed out. Today, it was like watching two different teams, as Norway bounced back with an important win over the Croatians. As with yesterday's match, Norway won the toss and elected to field first. They'd obviously taken the time to learn from their mistakes, as they bowled much straighter, and the fielding was much more energetic. The opening pair, so dominant yesterday, only put on 35 before Christopher Pivac was trapped lbw by leg spinner Shahbaz Butt. Paul Vujnovich began to play somewhat of an anchor role, and was evidently determined to bat out the 20 overs. He put on 43 for the second wicket with brother John, who was eventually bowled by Babar Shazad. Craig Wear was smartly stumped a few balls later, before the fourth wicket pairing put on 26, Vujnovich being run out from the last ball of the innings.

Croatia had scored 105-4 from their 20 overs. A total that they could defend, but they would have been expecting more after yesterday's start. Norway's reply started badly when the big hitting Zaheer Ashiq was caught from the first ball of the innings. Croatia were bowling very economically, Michael Grzinic starting with two maidens, and ending with just three runs from his four overs. Norway seemed to be struggling on 27-3, but that third wicket brought Iftikhar Hussain to the crease. Hussain played a fantastic knock, hitting 56 from 39 balls, including two huge sixes, as Norway chased down the target with 5 balls to spare to win by 7 wickets.

In Jersey, an excellent unbeaten 109-run partnership between captain Asif Khan (59*) and hard-hitting Imran Choudhry (60*) led Germany to a convincing 7 wicket victory over Israel in Group B at FB Fields. Having seen their team stutter to 31-3 chasing Israel's 138, Khan and Choudhry steadied the German ship with some fine clean hitting, regularly chipping the ball over the infield and running hard. Although Choudhry had to call for a runner in the 7th over, the burly right-hander continued to score freely, hitting legspinner Josh Evans for a straight six and following this up with a beautifully timed straight drive off the bowling of Samson that also cleared the ropes.

With the score at 78-3 in the 10th over the game was still very much in the balance but Israel couldn't stem the continuous flow of runs. Choudhry brought up his 50 in the 14th over with a neat leg glance, coming off only 27 balls, and he then dispatched the next ball for a towering six into the table tennis centre. Khan reached his 50 a couple of overs later, a streaky edge off Nir Dokarkar going through third man for 4. The German captain then finished the game in style with a classy straight drive off Evans racing to the boundary.

Earlier, Daniel Hyman had been the main-stay of the Israeli innings, making a quick-fire 51. Kashif Haider was the pick of the German bowlers, returning the economical figures of 2-16 from 4 overs. The win lifts Germany off the bottom of Group B and sees Israel still yet to record a win.

A polished Jersey bowling and fielding performance helped them to a crushing 8-wicket victory against Belgium in Group B at Farmers. Having won the toss and fielding for the third game in a row, Jersey started strongly and reduced Belgium to 13-2 in the 4th over. Belgium then lost wickets at regular intervals with Jersey holding some good catches. Tony Carlyon took two in the deep, one to dismiss the captain Wagener and the other to remove Shahid Muhammad, whilst Ryan Driver clung on to a great catch diving forward at deep square leg to dismiss Farmiloe. At 42-7 it looked like Belgium might be rolled over for less than 50 but some determined lower-order hitting from wicket-keeper Ali Raza, who made 17 in 7 balls, helped Belgium towards respectability, eventually finishing 85 all out in 18.5 overs.

In response Jersey never looked in danger as Ryan Driver hit 26 off 16 balls, including three 4s and a six, whilst opener Ed Farley made 36 off 26 balls, including back-to-back sixes to finish the game. Jersey are now 2 points clear at the top of Group B and have all but secured a place in the semi-final

Denmark leapfrogged Belgium in Group B as they beat France by 8 wickets in a 14-over game at Grainville. With the start delayed due to a waterlogged pitch, the game was reduced to 14 overs and France scored a meagre 39-8 batting first. Denmark then made light work of the run-chase, knocking off the runs in 6.5 overs for the loss of only 2 wickets. Denmark now go on to meet Jersey this afternoon at Farmers in what will be another top-of-the-table clash.

Adverse weather conditions result in schedule change

Matches rescheduled for reserve day

As a result of the total wash-out today in the ICC European Division 1 Championship matches will transfer to the Reserve Day on Thursday 21st July 2011.

In both Jersey and Guernsey should all three re-scheduled matches tomorrow morning produce a result then and only then would the matches originally due to be played this afternoon (Wednesday 20th July) be fully re-scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday 21st July.

However, if less than the three morning matches produce a result then the unresolved match(es) would be re-scheduled to the afternoon. If this situation occurs then the matches originally planned for the afternoon of Wednesday 20th July would all be declared a No Result and one point awarded to each team.

Due to the change in schedule and rearranged transport times in Jersey matches will start at 11:30, with venues remaining the same. In Group A the schedule remains unchanged.

Weather puts pay to morning fixtures

Afternoon matches still to go ahead

Despite continued efforts of the ground staff in both Jersey and Guernsey, persistent rain has abandoned all 6 matches. All matches can be replayed as per the event playing regulations on the reserve day (Thursday 21st July) – details will follow in tonight's media release. Efforts are being continued to try to play this afternoon's round of matches.

The ICC European Division 1 Championship is a pathway event to the ICC World Twenty20, with the winner and runner-up earning their place in the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE.

The tournament is taking place between the 19-24 July, 2011.

Belgium edge out Denmark in thrilling encounter

Guernsey pushed hard by Croatia but move onto 4 points

In Group B Jersey and Belgium both made it two wins in two on the first day of the ICC European Division 1 Championship.

At FB Fields, Belgium edged out Denmark by 1 run in a thrilling encounter. Batting first Belgium began brightly with Nirvam Shah making 24 but their innings fell away to a final total of 104 in 19.1 overs, which looked rather below par against one of the highest-ranked sides in the competition.

However, Denmark's innings began disastrously, as they lost their first four wickets for just 12 runs. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and at 61 for eight after 12 overs, the Belgians appeared to have the victory for the taking. Spearhead of the Belgian success was Wagas Shafiq, whose four overs brought him three victims for just 18 runs.

However, Basit Javed and Bashir Shah then came together and added 36 in confident style before Bashir was dismissed for 20. With 8 needed from the last over, a couple of singles from the first two balls were followed by a four struck over mid off from Saeed Amjud. With 2 runs now needed, he drove the next delivery hard but at head height straight to Farmiloe at extra cover, and he made no mistake to the great joy of his teammates and the despair of Javed who was left unbeaten on 17. Denmark came tantalisingly close, all out for 103 with 2 balls remaining.

Jersey recorded an emphatic 8 wicket victory over Israel to join Belgium at the top of Group B. Jersey won the toss and elected to field, with Israel making a steady start and reaching 43-2 in the 7

th over. But a devastating spell of seam bowling by veteran Tony Carlyon, who returned figures of 4-9 in 4 overs, and some sharp Jersey fielding then turned the game on its head. Anthony Hawkins-Kay ran out Eshkol Solomon with only one stump to aim at and captain Peter Gough took a fine one-handed catch to dismiss the captain Herschel Gutman, with Israel all out for 87 in the 20th over having lost their last 6 wickets for a miserly 30 runs.

In response, Jersey's openers put on 18 for the first wicket before Ed Farley was smartly caught by a diving Gutman at mid-off in the 3

rd over. A 40-run partnership between Dean Morrison and Ryan Driver then put Jersey firmly in control, with the two left-handers happy to work the Israeli spinners for singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Off-spinner Gutman then dismissed Driver in the 10

th over but Morrison continued to bat with fluency, launching several sixes onto the bank at Farmers and bringing up his 50 with a flat six over mid-wicket.

Victory came in the 12

th over as Morrison again cleared the ropes, securing an 8 wicket win for Jersey and leaving Morrison unbeaten on 64 off 44 balls, a knock that had included 3 fours and 5 sixes.

In the other match in Group B, France bounced back from their defeat against Belgium to beat Germany by 34 runs at Les Quennevais. Having been put in to bat, France made 126-7 in their 20 overs. In reply Germany were all out for 92 in 18.3 overs, 17-year old leg-spinner Zika Ali impressing with figures of 3-17.

After running Italy close in the first game of the day at College Field, Croatia gave a scare to hosts Guernsey in the second game, Guernsey winning by just three wickets with one over to spare.

Guernsey put Croatia in after winning the toss, and the Croatian innings started with a 43 run opening partnership between Paul Vujnovich and Christopher Pivac before Pivac was dismissed by Jeremy Frith for 16. Vujnovich was next out when he was run out for 25, but Croatia didn't really capitalise on that opening partnership, and scored 97-7 from their 20 overs. Tim Ravenscroft was the pick of the bowlers with 2-13.

That should have been an easy run chase for Guernsey, but their innings started poorly when both openers were removed with the score on four. Skipper Stuart Le Prevost then set about rebuilding the innings with a patient 34, but when he was sixth out with the score on 65, Guernsey were staring down the barrel of an upset defeat. A 29 run partnership for the seventh wicket steadied the ship though, and Guernsey eventually secured the win with one over to spare.

Italy made it two wins out of two when a fine all-round performance saw them ease to a comfortable 7 wicket win against Austria at KGV.

Peter Petricola showed the form which saw him win the Player of the Tournament accolade at the ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong earlier this year, as he tore through the Austrian lower order to finish with 4 for 20. Din Alaud (2-16) and Dilan Fernando (2-24) both bowled exceptionally well, with Munasinghe (1-17) the other wicket taker.

The Austrians had got off to a solid start, with openers Simpson-Parker (18), and Lakmal Kasthuriarachchige (16) getting starts, but thereafter only Amar Naeem (23) and Imran Asif (15) offered any significant resistance as Austria were dismissed for 105 in 18.4 overs.

In reply, all five Italian batsmen reached double figures, with Petricola completing a fine all-round performance as he made an unbeaten 28, sharing in an unbroken 4th wicket stand of 55 with Damian Crowley (23*). Damian Fernando (10) had gone with 16 on the board, but Andy Northcote (23), and Alessandro Bonora (16), ensured that there was no repeat of the morning drama, as they reached their target with 11 balls to spare.

After a disappointing opening match in Group A against Guernsey in which they lost by ten wickets, Norway have bounced back in fine style with an 8 wicket win over Gibraltar at Port Soif in Guernsey.

Gibraltar captain Iain Latin won the toss and this time elected to bat first. Their innings started badly with Ross Harkins dismissed from the third ball of the innings with the score on five. The innings never really recovered after that, with some poor running between the wickets, and Gibraltar could only manage 77-8 from their 20 overs. Shabaz Butt was the pick of the bowlers with 3-13.

Norway's innings started with a big hitting innings from Zaheer Ashiq. Playing quality cricket shots, he smashed 35 from 20 deliveries before he was out in the fifth over. Norway were on 45 at that point and well ahead of the game. They only lost one more wicket and, aided by some poor Gibraltar fielding, they reached their target in the tenth over to win by 8 wickets.

Austria off to winning start knocking over Gibraltar

Italy survives scare to defeat Croatia

Austria has got their ICC European Division One campaign off to a good start with a close fought match against Gibraltar in group A at Port Soif in Guernsey today. Gibraltar captain Iain Latin won the toss and put Austria into bat. It was looking like a good decision when both openers were removed with the score on just four. Benjamin Loader showed some resistance in the Austrian upper order with 23 from 25 balls, but in general the wickets were falling regularly and it looked like Austria were going to struggle to set a good total.

That changed later on though with a good partnership of 55 for the ninth wicket between Imran Asif and Nandeep Soggi, which ended when Soggi was out for 28 from 26 balls. Imran Asif stayed in, reaching 35 from 22 balls, including the only six of the innings, and he was the last man out from the first ball of the last over, Austria having scored 141. Aaron Baglietto was the pick of the bowlers with 3-12.

Gibraltar's innings got off to the worst possible start when Ross Harkins was out from the first ball. Ferrary was run out soon after, before a 66 run partnership between Ian Farrell and Mark Bacarese recovered the innings, swinging the game back Gibraltar's way. Farrell was out having scored a run a ball 24, and Bacarese stayed in, scoring at a decent rate, also hitting two big sixes in his 60 ball innings of 66. He needed someone to stay with him though, and the wickets at the other end fell regularly. Jack Luman tried, and he hit some good shots towards the end of the innings. Some good Austrian fielding stopped
any boundaries though, and Austria won by six runs.

A last wicket stand of 18 between Damian Crowley and Din Alaud gave Italy a narrow one wicket win over Croatia in a thrilling encouter at College field. Chasing what looked a relatively modest 90 for victory, everything looked to be going according to plan when Italy moved serenely on to 20 without loss. Michael Grzinic (2-29) and John Vujnovich (3-19) inspired a spell which saw four wickets fall for just one run, as Italy suffered a serious wobble. Hayden Patrizi crashed four boundaries in a quickfire 22, before skying to Wear at cover. Chris Pivac got in on the act, and at 57 for 6, the game was very much in the balance.

The score had moved on to 75 when Vivek Sharma, who had bowled a loose first over, then produced a triple wicket maiden. The second wicket was the result of a quite brilliant diving catch behind the stumps by Anthony Govorko. After a nervy period, Din Alaud struck two boundaries to break the shackles, and with the scores level, Crowley crashed a cover drive to the boundary, much to the joy, and indeed relief of the Italian contingent.

Earlier, Croatia had batted steadily in scoring 89 for 6 in their 20 overs. Chris Pivac (22) had looked dangerous striking four boundaries, before being well caught on the midwicket boundary by Raso off the bowling of Andy Northcote (2-19). Paul Vujnovich (28) anchored the innings, scoring the only six of the game. Craig Wear (15*) added 28 with Craig Sinovich (10), to give their side something to bowl at - in the final analysis though, not just quite enough.

Co-hosts Guernsey got their challenge off to the perfect start when they completed an emphatic ten wicket win at KGV against Norway. Having been put in, Norway struggled from the off against an accurate and penetrative Guernsey attack, backed up by an energetic display in the field. Jamie Nussbaumer (3-7) removed the top three batsmen to leave Norway reeling at 16 for 3, and that got worse with the introduction of spin twins Gary Rich and Jeremy Frith. The experienced duo tightened the screws, and none of the Norwegian batsmen were able to cope. Firth took 3 for 15, aided by two stumpings by Tom Kimber, both ironically enough off leg side wides. Rich had the excellent analysis of 2 for 9, as Norway was eventually all out for 57 in 17.2 overs. Only Aamir Waheed (11*) and Ali Saleem (10) reached double figures in a pitiful batting display, in which extras (14) was the highest contributor.

Facing a modest target, Guernsey wasted no time in racing to victory, with teenager Tim Ravenscroft (31*) and Ross Kneller (25*) sharing an unbroken opening stand of 60 in just 7.1 overs. Ravenscroft and Kneller punished anything remotely loose, striking 11 boundaries in total between them, as they laid down a serious marker for the week ahead.

In group B, Jersey kicked off their European Division 1 Championship title defence with a comfortable 6 wicket victory over Germany at Les Quennevais this morning. Having won the toss and electing to field Jersey started brightly, with disciplined bowling from openers Ryan Driver and Chris Jones reducing Germany to 6-2 in 4 overs. Matters got worse when the captain Asif Khan was dismissed for 14, caught behind off the bowling of Anthony Hawkins-Kay, leaving Germany struggling at 27-3. But a brisk 36 off 25 balls from Imran Choudhry, including three big straight sixes, steered Germany out of danger and on their way to 99-7 off their 20 overs. Hawkins-Kay was the pick of the Jersey bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-13 from 4 overs.

Jersey then set about their run-chase with intent, openers Ed Farley and Dean Morrison running hard between the wickets and helping Jersey to 26-0 in 3 overs. They experienced a slight wobble as they slipped to 70-4 but a 30-run partnership between captain Peter Gough and Chris Jones steadied the ship and led Jersey to victory with 23 balls to spare.

Elsewhere in Group B, newly promoted Belgium beat France by 5 wickets at the FB Fields. Chasing a total of 114, Belgian opener Nirvam Shah led the way with a knock of 33, helping his team to victory with 2 balls to spare.

In the other game in Group B Denmark were emphatic winners Farmers, beating Israel by 8 wickets. Batting first Israel had made a poor start, losing 2 wickets in their first 7 balls. They eventually limped to 94-9 in 20 overs, Yaniv Rajpurker top-scoring with 26. Danish opener Frederik Klokker then hit 44 off 43 balls to lead his side to a crushing victory inside 16 overs.

Il torneo non e' ancora iniziato e le condizioni meteo restano pessime. Altro allenamento indoor per la squadra con un timido quanto d'ora all'aperto.

Si inizia con un po' di badminton tra Jayasena e Walsh (il fisioterapista), si passa poi ad un po' di calcio con pallone morbido.

Ovviamente si inizia anche con gli infortuni.

Si inizia, anche se teoricamente non si e' ancora iniziato (raduno preliminare alle ore 21.15) oppure si e' iniziato mesi fa (con tutta la parte burocratico - amministrativa) con qualche problema.

Raccogliere la squadra e' sempre un problema.

Questa volta un giocatore del secondo gruppo e' arrivato al secondo punto di raduno (Londra Gatwick) con un giorno di anticipo.

E pensare che il primo punto di raduno (Bologna) deve essere ancora raggiunto dal primo gruppo.

Beh... meglio arrivare prima che dopo...

ICC European Division 1 Fixtures announced

European World T20 qualification culminates in Jersey and Guernsey

The ICC European Division 1 Championship takes place in the Channel Islands this month, as the twelve teams fight it out to be confirmed as the European qualifiers for next year’s ICC World Twenty20 qualifier.

Jersey and Guernsey as co-hosts are welcoming teams from across continental Europe which are Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Israel, Italy, Norway, including hosts Jersey and Guernsey.

The ICC European Division 1 Championship is the culmination of a summer of European T20 cricket pathway events, which leads to the ICC World Twenty20 global qualifier in Dubai, UAE in March 2012.

The tournament is taking place between the 19-24 July, at eight venues across Jersey and Guernsey; five in Jersey Grainville, Farmers, FB Fields, Les Quennevais, Victoria College and three in Guernsey; KGV, Port Soif, College Field.

Co-host Tournament Organiser, Guernsey Cricket Board’s Mark Latter has led a fantastic team and is very pleased with the work done in the build up to the tournament: “When being accepted to host an ICC Europe event it is always both an honour, but also a huge administrative responsibility that is not taken lightly.

“It has been a fantastic build up to the championship which is a regional qualifier for ICC World Twenty20 2012, so it is extremely important that everything is as the best it can be. Guernsey and Jersey have formed a well drilled partnership and we are looking forward to welcoming all teams from across Europe to the Channel Islands,” said Latter.

Tournament Director, ICC Regional Performance Officer, Philip Hudson is very happy with the preparations so far; “The ICC European Division 1 Championship, is the culmination of three months of competition, which leads the top two teams into the Global qualifier next March in UAE. The two European qualifiers will be provided with a wonderful opportunity to test themselves against the other leading Associate and Affiliate countries, in the Twenty20 format.

“Jersey and Guernsey have a great record of being excellent ICC European tournament hosts and have done a fantastic job in getting the islands ready for the ICC European Division 1 Championship,” said Hudson.

La Division 3 e la Division 2

Il percorso per arrivare all'ICC European Division 1 Championship è stato piuttosto lungo ed articolato.

Sulla base del ranking degli incontri a 50 overs le squadre sono state divise in tre differenti Division. Con l'ITALIA e la Danimarca, teste di serie, qualificate di dirittto alla Division 1 ed altre squadre anch'esse qualificate di diritto o alla Division 1 o alla Division 2.

Si è cominciato quindi con la Division 3 giocata in Slovenia a maggio (Bulgaria, Repubblica Ceca, Estonia, Slovenia, Svezia e Turchia).

La prima classificata (Svezia) e la seconda (Estonia) hanno proseguito il cammino (anzi avrebbero dovuto visto che l'Estonia ha dato foirfait) disputando la Division 2 in Belgio a giugno con Austria, Belgio, Cipro, Finlandia, Grecia, Isola di Man, Lussemburgo, Malta, Portogallo e Spagna.

La prima classificata (Belgio) e la seconda (Austria) devono ora proseguire il cammino nella Division 1.
