As our everyday social and cultural experiences are increasingly mediated by electronic products--from "intelligent" toasters to iPods--it is the design of these products that shapes our experience of the "electrosphere" in which we live. Designers of electronic products, writes Anthony Dunne in Hertzian Tales, must begin to think more broadly about the aesthetic role of electronic products in everyday life. Industrial design has the potential to enrich our daily lives--to improve the quality of our relationship to the artificial environment of technology, and even, argues Dunne, to be subverted for socially beneficial ends. The cultural speculations and conceptual design proposals in Hertzian Tales are not utopian visions or blueprints; instead, they embody a critique of present-day practices, "mixing criticism with optimism." Six essays explore design approaches for developing the aesthetic potential of electronic products outside a commercial context--considering such topics as the post-optimal object and the aesthetics of user-unfriendliness--and five proposals offer commentary in the form of objects, videos, and images. These include "Electroclimates," animations on an LCD screen that register changes in radio frequency; "When Objects Dream...," consumer products that "dream" in electromagnetic waves; "Thief of Affection," which steals radio signals from cardiac pacemakers; "Tuneable Cities," which uses the car as it drives through overlapping radio environments as an interface of hertzian and physical space; and the "Faraday Chair: Negative Radio," enclosed in a transparent but radio-opaque shield.

You program it directly from a web browser by holding it in front of a computer screen.
No wires, and no software to install. It's really easy.

- Example programs

- Graphical programming
- Writing programs
- Example projects

The Moon Berlin garments feature tiny LED, or light-emitting diode, bulbs. They are attached to an electrical circuit imprinted on a soft, rubbery material that can be added directly to fabric or placed between a garment’s main material and its lining. While the arrangement may sound cumbersome, the circuits are so flexible they can even be attached to silk, chiffon and satin, the engineers say.

One thin circuit wire leads to a credit card-size battery that is three millimeters, or one-tenth of an inch, thick, rechargeable and low-energy. It is concealed in a fabric pocket somewhere on the garment and can power the lights for 8 to 10 hours.
Some lights even will sparkle, responding to a sensor that detects the wearer’s movement, and others dim or brighten according to levels of light. Oh, and the garments are washable.
The initial 23-piece collection, which can be ordered from Moon Berlin online, ranges from a little black dress with lights twinkling through a cowl draped at the back to a sleeveless white silk shirt featuring the lighting circuit as though it were a graphic print. Prices are €2,000, or $2,750, for a gown; €1,000 for a silk shirt.
The integration of wearables that augment the body with technological capabilities permeate our diverse worlds from entertainment to the military. During a recent episode of American Idol, singer Katy Perry wore a white body suit that flickered with pink LED lights to the beat of a song with Kanye West. Just a few days ago, during a US military secret mission to hunt down Osama Bin Laden, elite Navy Blue Seals wore special goggles that allowed them to see in low light conditions and helmets installed with video cams that beamed the capture and killing of Bin Laden in real time for the President of the United States and other onlookers in the White House Situation Room.

In the realms of art and technology, wearable technologies have proliferated while linking the areas of art, design, science and engineering. In the art and technology DIY world, the arduino and lilypad platforms and open source software have made these technologies more accessible. Embedded accelerometers within ubiquitous communication and computer hardware such as the i-phone, i-pod touch, and the i-pad among others have simplified the relationship between code and interactivity.

Some of the questions to be considered over the course of the next four weeks will include: How do wearable technologies enhance the body’s capabilities to interface with the environment as transmitters, receivers, enablers of data-in-the-world. How do the technologies of material protect the body upon harmful impact (fire, heat, microbes) or enhance more pleasurable sensation? What is the role of risk in relation to the failure of design or delivery? What are the relationships between the practical aspects of use and the aesthetic concerns of design? How do we understand wearable technology in relation to the excesses of commodified culture?

Lly Sally Fort is a craft & design curator, cultural participation and learning consultant, and textiles designer-maker. In 2005 Sally received funding to research the DIY / counter-culture craft scene in the US and UK. This led to the 2009 project UK DIY, including the UK’s first exhibition of counter-culture crafts, accompanied by events and projects across the North West. With a special interest in relationships between craft and web 2.0, Sally is currently developing a crowd-sourced exhibition marrying code and textiles.
A framework is sketched for collaboration between industry and universities, commerce and research, where value of the past gives form to the future with the tools and materials that current technologies provide. This book focusses on the Italian fashion system as an example of a sector wrought with tradition, saper fare and high quality that forms a fertile ground for a human-centered application of the latest technologies in all aspects of the production chain, ranging from strategic and marketing aspects, to processes and tools of production, from materials used and sustainable strategies to the skills of the designer. The user forms the center of the fashion product. Hence fashion products are presented, in which a subtle application of state-of-the-art technologies extend functional, expressive and communicative properties, resulting in metamorphic fashion.
Angela decided to start compiling her favorite links/research and document some experiments and prototypes to share every weekend here at Soft Circuit Saturdays.
She first discovered e-textiles, craft technology, and wearable computing during her time at Bennington College, while exploring physical computing. In her senior year she spent 2 months doing an independent Field Work Term researching, collecting samples, and trying out soft circuit techniques. This research led to a project called REACTIVEfashion, a collaboration with Rebecca Grabman that demonstrated her experiments in the form of a playful (and electrified) costume showcase.
Right now she continuing her explorations in the field and constantly trying new things. Angela presents a lot of prototypes in person at a monthly gathering called NH Media Makers and she working on organizing a DIY/Maker crafting group. If you live in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, or Southern Maine and work with these forms or are interested in collaborating she would love to hear from you.

The Climate Dress is made of conductive embroidery, over hundred of tiny LED lights inserted into the embroidey, a CO2 sensor and an Arduino Lilypad microprocessor. The LEDs visualize the level of CO2 in the nearby surroundings and are powered trough the embroidery!
For The Climate Dress we used soft conductive thread that has a similar consistence to the kind of thread used for traditional and industrial embroidery production. This way it is possible to make embroidery that become more than an esthetical element in clothing and interior textiles.

The embroidery becomes functional conveying electricity and computer information and thereby give "power to the dress". The dress senses the CO2 concentration in the air, then accordingly creates diverse light patterns varying from slow, regular light pulsations to short and hectic. The technology, which integrates ”soft circuits” into the production of embroidery, is an innovative process. It is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Copenhagen based design studio diffus, Swiss embroidery company Forster-Rohner, the Danish research-based limited company Alexandra Institute and finally the Danish School of Design.
