Six former athletes, one coach and three teams will be inducted into Everett Community College's Athletic Hall of Fame at a dinner June 5.

The event is at EvCC's Student Fitness Center, 2206 Tower St. Social hour is at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is at 7 p.m. Participants are required to RSVP in advance.

The keynote speaker for the event is Jack Thompson, who played quarterback at Washington State University from 1975-79. He set numerous records at WSU before playing in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Students Perform Twelfth Night May 31-June 2 and June 7-9 at EvCC

Everett Community College students - including actual twins - will perform the Shakespeare comedy of mistaken identity "Twelfth Night," at 7:30 p.m. May 31-June 2 and June 7-9 in Baker Hall, Room 120.

In "Twelfth Night," Shakespeare takes us to Illyria, where a Duke, a Countess, madmen, drunken rogues, foolish wits and witty fools await to escort you through shipwrecks, sword fights and true love.

The performance includes Sarah and Samantha Lee, who will be alternating in the roles of the twins Viola and Sebastian.

The Washington State Youth Leadership Summit will present "Finding Kind," a free community event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday June 1 at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave. in downtown Everett. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The event includes a screening of the documentary film and an interactive community dialog on bullying led by the filmmakers, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Stroud. The event is free and open to all who would like to attend.

In addition to the filmmakers, special guests at the event include: Kim Hopen, Mrs. Washington Plus America and Raven Hopen, 2012 Washington All American Girl Teen. The mother-daughter team has chosen the topic of bullying as a platform to open up the community conversation and encourage people to join in the anti-bullying movement.

New Composite Technician Certificate - Info Session June 5

Everett Community College is offering a new aerospace composite technician certificate, with classes starting July 2. The 31-credit certificate was designed in cooperation with industry subject-matter experts to meet the needs of the growing aerospace composite field. It will provide entry-level knowledge and skills for employment in the composite industry, said Annette Floyd, EvCC Air Washington program manager.

EvCC Introduces Evening Engineering Program

Everett Community College is introducing an evening engineering transfer degree program starting this fall, the first at a north Puget Sound community college.

Fall classes start Sept. 24 and include Introduction to Design, Preparation for Chemistry and Calculus 1. To get started for fall quarter at EvCC, visit www.everettcc.edu/getstarted.

"With the new evening sequence, we are helping to address our state's serious shortage of engineers," EvCC engineering instructor Eric Davishahl said. "By offering evening classes, we're adding capacity in our program and serving those who work during the day."

Summer RN Refresher Course - Apply by June 11

Everett Community College is offering an eight-week RN Refresher course for inactive registered nurses who want to resume their nursing careers.

Classes start July 2. Applications are due by June 11. To apply, visit www.everettcc.edu/RNRefresher

The 16-credit class includes 80 hours of classroom instruction and 160 hours of clinical work. Classes are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, with possible evening or weekend clinicals.

The cost is $1,214.58, with a lab fee of $150 which covers classroom supplies and malpractice insurance.

Everett Community College will rededicate the newly remodeled Henry M. Jackson Conference Center on campus. EvCC faculty member and Jackson historian Dr. Tom Gaskin will be the featured speaker. Anna Marie Laurence and Peter Jackson will announce the winners of the high school essay contest, and the bas relief of Senator Jackson will be rededicated by members of the campus art committee. This event is open to the public with free parking available in Lot B on the main campus.

Student Artwork at EvCC's Gallery May 14-June 8

EVERETT, WA - Artwork created by Everett Community College students will be on display in "The Last Call" at EvCC's Russell Day Gallery May 14 through June 8.

The annual student art exhibit includes the work of graduating and second-year students studying ceramics, digital media, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography and sculpture. The digital artwork can be viewed online at the gallery.

A public reception to celebrate the opening of the show is 12-2 p.m. May 17.

EvCC Creates Aerospace Solutions Group

EVERETT, WASH. - Everett Community College has created the Aerospace Solutions Group, a move that will make the college more responsive to one of the fastest growing sectors of the local economy.

The new division will connect regional aerospace and manufacturing companies with workforce development and training solutions provided by the college.

"We will grow educational offerings to meet employer needs, develop more productive partnerships with industry and create seamless educational pathways that lead to employment for our students," EvCC President David Beyer said.

Colleges ramp up machining programs for aerospace

Eleven community and technical colleges in Washington state are among the first in the nation to implement a new national program touted by President Obama as key to getting Americans back to work.

Working together, the 11 colleges are offering, or will soon offer, a two-quarter certificate in computer-numeric controlled machining. The course is designed specifically to meet the needs of the aerospace industry and move well-trained workers into well-paying jobs.

"This is exactly the kind of response industry, students and taxpayers need from our community and technical colleges," said Mary Kaye Bredeson, Director for the Center of Excellence for Aerospace and Advanced Materials Manufacturing based at Everett Community College. The Center is a one-stop resource center for education and industry in Washington.

Community colleges offer archaeology training and dig

Edmonds and Everett community colleges offer archaeology classes this summer with a rare opportunity for students to work on a real local dig.

Students will be excavating a site at Japanese Gulch, within 140 acres of wooded ravine, in Mukilteo this summer. They will be recovering artifacts of the Japanese community, emigrants working in the Mukilteo Lumber Mills, who lived in the area in the early 1900s. The City of Mukilteo discovered historical and cultural artifacts at the site while working on a fish passage and stream restoration project at Japanese Gulch Creek.

The colleges are partnering with the city to create an anthropology and archaeology field training program at the site. Students will learn about human ecology and archeology, and then go into the field to collect, clean, analyze, and document the artifacts under the supervision of an archaeologist.

Everett Community College's Alumni Association has selected Everett Police Chief Kathy Atwood and Everett firefighter Gary Parks as the college's 2012 Distinguished Alumni.

The two were honored at the Everett Community College Foundation Leadership Breakfast April 26, where Atwood was a keynote speaker.

Parks, who died in 1987 while fighting the fire that destroyed the college's library and student union, was also remembered at a service at EvCC Feb. 16.

"Kathy Atwood and Gary Parks devoted their careers to protecting our community," said EvCC President David Beyer. "Our community depends on individuals like these two every day."

Learn about Everett Community College's Aviation Maintenance Technician School and careers in aviation maintenance at an information session at 2:30 p.m. June 14.

The information session is at the school, 9711 32nd Place W., Building C-80, Paine Field in Everett.

EvCC's Aviation Maintenance Technician School is one of only about 150 schools nationwide that train airframe and powerplant mechanics. In the eight-quarter, 2,040-hour program, you'll learn about 45 subjects and work hands-on with a variety of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
