When asked for "Library Authentication", use your barcode (first 9 digits on the back of your card) and your UCID (without leading zeroes). IT authentication is not working at this time.

Gallagher Library Temporary Closure August 6-27

The Gallagher Library will be closed Tues., Aug. 6-Tues., Aug. 27, inclusive as they are having their main floor carpet replaced. As Aug. 5 is a holiday, the last full day of operations will be Fri., Aug. 2.

Staff will be working out of the Taylor Family Digital Library, and can be reached at gallagher.library@ucalgary.ca. If you need to get a book from the collection, place a hold in the catalogue; staff will be able retrieve holds, and you can pick them up at TFDL. The only exception to this is August 8-13, where staff will NOT have access to the Gallagher due to asbestos removal. Holds may still be placed, but they will not be picked up until August 14.

If you have questions about the closure, feel free to stop by the Gallagher Library this week!

Library Services Over the Break

If you are thinking of working over the break, and of using library materials during this time, there are a few things you need to know:

All University of Calgary Libraries will close at 12:00pm (Noon) on Monday December 24, 2012 for the Christmas Holidays (and re-open January 2, 2013; check http://library.ucalgary.ca/hours for up-to-date hours)
The last day for hold requests for material housed in the HDL will be Thursday, December 20th.
* Hold requests for material placed over the Christmas Holidays will not be processed until January 4th. Patrons will receive an email when material is available for pickup. *
The IT outage scheduled for Dec. 26-28 covers the following library services (basically, it’s everything, but just to be explicit…):

Library Catalogue
Library web pages (http://library.ucalgary.ca)
All University of Calgary licensed e-books
All University of Calgary licensed e-journals
All research databases
Patrons will not be able to renew materials or place holds online.
So, NO electronic access to the library for these three days!

Elsevier Problems

Hi all, we’re currently experiencing trouble accessing all Elsevier content (Science Direct, journals, etc). We’re working with Elsevier to ID the problem, but in the meantime, if you’re on campus you can remove the ezproxy portion of the URL and Elsevier will recognize the campus IP address and let you through.

For instance http://ezproxy.lib.ucalgary.ca:2048/login?url=http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/search/ is currently resulting in an error:

But if you manually remove the part highlighted in yellow (.ezproxy.lib.ucalgary.ca) you’ll get through. That should work for all journal content as well.

Career LIVEbrary works exactly like a normal library – readers’ checkout and borrow a “book” for a limited period. The only difference is that books in the LIVEbrary are people representing a particular career path or topic. Books share wisdom and experience, and reply to questions.

MADGIC now Spatial and Numeric Data Services

"As of August 30, 2011, MADGIC has moved to the 4th floor of the Taylor Family Digital Library, with a new name: Spatial and Numeric Data Services. As part of this transition, the map and air photo collection will be moved to storage in the Library basement. We regret that there will no longer be a drop-in service for these materials. Spatial and Numeric Data Services will provide a retrieval service for maps and air photos. More details on the retrieval service will be available soon."

Spatial and Numeric Data Services is on the 4th floor of the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL). Turn left when you exit the elevators. The TFDL will be open to the public on September 6.

Public services at MADGIC in the Library Tower will cease at 4:30PM today.

National Academies Press Makes its Reports Freely Available

Incorrect e-journal records

For the next month or so, you might see e-journals for which there is no online access:

Records for these journals were sent to us in error (i.e. we shouldn't have electronic access to these journals anyway.) These records should be removed by mid-April, however, if you encounter any problem titles, please report them via http://library.ucalgary.ca/troubleshooting-feedback-form
