In this situation Kobe uses the jab step as his attack move.  If the defender opens up too much he can drive.  If the defender opens up and has help behind him, Kobe can pull up to shoot.

Deron Williams starts the video with a number of different takes on the euro step.  This is not a skill that beginner players need to use, but with tougher competition moves like this become more and more important.

There are also a number of drills being run at the free throw line for catch and shoot situations.  For additional variety, you can use a number of ball fakes, spin moves, and step backs to adjust for the defense. Watch the video and use those elements that are best for your situation.

When you miss a shot you need to immediately correct it.  No complaints or curse words.  This video talks about the importance of using keywords to correct your misses.  If your shot is off to the left or right you should immediately say “straight” to correct it.  If your shot hits the back rim, you should immediately say “up” or “arc”. The idea is to use a missed shot as an opportunity to improve your game instead of an opportunity to become emotional.  We all get mad when we miss and this is a great way of working ourselves out of it.

When the ball is short it is only short for one of three reasons: legs, follow-through or rhythm. You will learn to feel it.  Be careful not to over-correct when you make a mistake.  Quickly identify where the error is in your shot and move to shoot the next one.

This video includes a couple of very easy drills.  The pace of the drills makes it easy for you to follow.  Each of the skills in this video are used in real game situations.  Going between the legs, behind the back, and “machine gunning” the ball are skills you need to have in your game.  As you get used to performing the drills under control you can increase the speed and add defensive pressure.  Start slow and work up the intensity.  Remember if you can’t do the move and stay under control you shouldn’t be doing the move at all.
