Ami Simms will be presenting a free lecture called "Quilting & Caring: The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative" at Christ Church (61 Grosse Pointe Boulevard, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236) on Thursday, February 16th at 6:30 p.m. It is open to the public.

From Ami:

“Statistically, one in three people know someone with Alzheimer's. For one in 10, that person is a caring for someone with Alzheimer's. Because I tell the story of my caregiving and advocacy experience through quilts, I think this presentation would be of interest to you. There will be a question and answer time at the end, and I will be bringing small format art quilts to sell. All profits fund Alzheimer's research.

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative is an all-volunteer national charity. Working with quilters throughout the US, we have raised more than $690,000 for Alzheimer's research. I am a quilter. My mother had Alzheimer's.”

2011 Quilt Challenge Reveal

In early summer of 2011, the Evening Star Quilters were given a challenge. The rules were:

The quilt had to be a completed (quilted and bound) 25" square quilt including a quilt label.
You could only use a total of 2 fabrics ‐ the fat quarter given and an additional fabric of your choosing.
You could have it quilted by another quilter if you'd like. You had to give credit on the quilt label for the quilter.
You were welcome to embellish the piece. You could use
ribbons, beads, buttons, decorative threads, etc. Ribbons
could not be used as a third fabric.
You could make your piece using any method of quilting you
like. Applique, piecing, foundation piecing, fussy cutting,
etc.

Everyone participating in the challenge was given a fat quarter from the same bolt of fabric.

At the December 2011 meeting the quilts were revealed. They were gorgeous, and everyone deserved to be called a winner!

2012 Guild Challenge: Marvelous Miniature Stars!

Marvelous Miniature Stars!

The challenge this year is to make a quilted piece that features star block/blocks. The challenge is that the blocks used in the quilt need to be 3" square or smaller!

This is a great opportunity to work on your piecing, pressing and appliqué skills.

Here's the challenge info:

Contest starts January 1, 2011 and will end at the May 30^th meeting. Viewers will choose 2 quilts for 1^st and 2^nd place. Winner will receive a gift certificate to a local quilt shop.
3" square (or smaller) Star Blocks. Any kind of star/stars can be used.
You can use multiple sizes of blocks – but they can be no larger than 3".
Can be pieced, appliquéd, foundation pieced or any combination of all of these.
You can use any fabrics/colors you like.
The quilt can be any shape you want – as long as it fits in the perimeter requirements.
The minimum size of the quilted piece is 54" perimeter. (Example: a 12" x 15" rectangle equals a 54" perimeter - 12+12+15+15=54).
The maximum size of the quilted piece is 144" perimeter. (Example: a 36" x 36" square equals a 144" perimeter - 36+36+36+36=144).
You can add borders if you like.
Please add a hanging sleeve and a quilt label to the back.
Quilt must be quilted and bound. You are welcome to have it professionally quilted – just be sure to give credit to the quilter on the quilt label.

We hope you will enjoy this challenge! Because we're using stars as the feature – these quilts will be eligible for the quilt show at the Longway Planetarium! The sky's the limit – so be creative!

This month’s meeting is going to be awesome, so don’t miss it if you can help it!

The Evening Star Quilters has members who can do all of the above - and MORE! And many of them are willing to help another person learn to quilt or improve the quality of the work that they do.

Are you interested in being a mentor for another person? Could you sit down with somebody and help answer their questions about quilting?

Do you know of someone who would like to learn how to quilt or sew? Perhaps a younger person or even someone your own age?

September Show and Tell

We had lots of great things to see at our September meeting. Unfortunately, camera issues plagued our blogger!
Sue Wilson prepared us for Halloween with her great Witches Hat:

Shelby showed her beautiful Celtic Knot Cross.

Sandy VanHee showed her Friendship Quilt that she made for her friend, Chris. Chris “is the next thing to a sister” to Sandy. They have been best friends for many years. The quilt was quilted by Lisa Burmann with a Minkee backing. Minkee is SOooooo soft!

This quilt is a 65 year old hand embroidered beauty that Marilyn Dodd shared. Isn’t it gorgeous how she pieced and set the blocks on point?

She also shared a pretty blue and white star quilt…

and this HUGE green and purple heart quilt. Wow, somebody has been VERY busy! This is a king-size quilt, too!

Shirley showed her quilt “Haunted Halloween.”

Lisa Burmann had a big “Kit and Kaboodle” bag to share with everyone. It’s very large, the perfect size for toting show and tell items to our guild meetings!
Caron Mosey showed the quilt she made for her forthcoming new grandson, due in early November. She included leftover blocks on the back so it’s reversible.

Mary displays her gorgeous quilt (and beautiful color style!)

Anna Showed off her pretty "Floral Splendor" quilt, a mirror kaleidoscope 4 patch.

How many quilters do you know who are age 25 or younger? Who have YOU taught to quilt?

I keep reading in the news about the obvious drop in the number of younger quilters, and I wondered…

What are we doing to spread the love of quilting in our younger generations? How do we mentor younger quilters? How do we encourage young men and women to give quilting a try? How do we add younger members to the Evening Star Quilters?

Investigating Color

Amy Davidson presented a PowerPoint and Trunk Show last night (May 25, 2011) at our guild meeting about “Color for Quilters.” Lots of great information!!! Some bits, pieces and highlights worth mentioning:

“It’s all about the contrast.”

“Think of color as a mood or feeling.”

“Color is relative to its surroundings.”

During the discussion following Amy’s great lecture, we talked about taking photos in nature and “out and about” in the world, then taking colors from those pictures to help create our color palettes for quilts. It got me to thinking about my fellow blogging friend Vicki Welsh. Vicki frequently does just that! Visit her blog at this link:

and view the photos she has pulled colors from. As you scroll down the page, you’ll see quilts she has created that utilize those color palettes. Vicki uses Photoshop Elements to capture the color from her photos, so if you have that software, this is something you might like to try.

Keep in mind that Vicki is one of the most talented quilters at dying her own fabric. Check out her Etsy shop to purchase some of her great fabrics!

Flushing Quilt Show

Every other year, the Genesee Star Quilters host a quilt show. The past few shows have been at Flushing United Methodist Church, and this year was no exception. Several members of the Evening Star Quilters are also members of the Genesee Star Quilters, and it was nice to see their work on display!

I loved this piece, “One Empty Spool” by Mary Shaw. Her design source was “Reminiscing: A Whimsical Collection Collection” by Terri Degenkolb. Nicely done, Mary!

This beautiful applique quilt by Virginia Anderson is called “Baltimore’s Country Cousins,” patter by Susan McKelvey.

Here’s a close up of Virginia’s beautiful work.

Love, love love the colors in Shirley Mile’s quilt, below. The background fabric is hand dyed, and I think the color choice was stunning! The quilt is called “Baskets and Blooms in the Cottage Garden” pattern source from “Quilting in the Garden.” The quilting was done by Suzie Berberich.

Virginia Anderson’s “Cinnamon Stitches” also caught my eye. Isn’t it exciting to see different colors being used? Design source from Piece of Cake, quilting by Quilting B’s of Elkton, MI.

The border Virginia used on her quilt is perfect!

Quilts for Japan

Quilters Newsletter has long enjoyed a friendship with Patchwork Tsushin, a leading Japanese quilt magazine. So when Editor in Chief Naomi Ichikawa emailed to say her magazine is collecting comfort quilts for those impacted by the recent earthquake in Japan, we wanted to join the effort. QN will gather quilts from U.S. quiltmakers then forward them to Naomi and her staff, who will deliver them to those in need. (If you live outside the United States, email me as indicated below, and I will provide information on how you can send quilts directly to Naomi.)

Quilts At The Planetarium

The quilt show this year at Longway Planetarium in Flint, Michigan will be September 8-September 10, 2011. The show is part of the Flint Festival of Quilts, an annual Flint quilt exhibit centered around the Michigan Quilt Artists Invitational held at the Greater Flint Arts Council.

As in past years, Longway Planetarium requirements stipulate that the quilt must have stars, planets or outer space in the quilting, blocks or fabrics.

Floral Star of Bethlehem, made by Evening Star quilter Caron Mosey of Flushing, was the Viewer's Choice quilt for the 2010 show.
