Training: Maine Employment Curriculum for Employment Support Personnel (Modules 6 & 7)

Learning Objectives:
The first modules of the Direct Support Professional:

Adult MR curriculum provides an overview of essential issues in the caregiving process.

The participant will be able to:

Identify the meaning of the terms “developmental disability” and “mental retardation.”
To be aware of prejudice, stereotypes and myths of society around the issues of disability.
Understand the human rights guaranteed by state law for persons receiving services and how these rights are incorporated into their daily work.
Explain the adult protective statute and its meaning for direct care workers.
Explain the importance of confidentiality and ways to implement confidentiality on the job.

Employment Specialists complete all Modules.

Job Coaches complete Modules 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 12.

Successful completion of the required modules results in state recognized certification.

This class provides an introduction to, and awareness of, diabetes. As outlined in sections 7.1.4, Levels III and IV, of the Maine Regulations Governing the Licensing and Functioning of Assisted Living Housing Programs.

Define a healthy and pleasant menu for service recipients
Identify unsanitary conditions in food handling and storage.
Discuss the importance of exercise to control diet and stress.
List 10 stress-relieving techniques which can be used by staff and service recipients.
Describe the role of the DSP in supporting service recipients at medical appointments.
Discuss safety and personal care issues and teaching of basic personal health and safety skills.
