It’s said a picture is worth a 1,000 words. And as with the well-composed essay, the well-composed photograph can evoke thoughts and feelings in the viewer’s mind. This year’s theme, “Through a Lens: Energy, Strength or Power” is about conveying a sense of energy, a sense of strength, or a sense of power to the viewer using only your image.

he "How Berkeley Can You Be?" Parade and Festival began in 1996, and was the brainchild of John Solomon, a longtime University Avenue merchant. John's involvement with the University Avenue Association led him to believe that a major event of University Avenue would send a positive signal about the University Avenue corridor, which at the time was struggling with public safety, empty store fronts, graffiti, and a poor quality of life. John felt that a major event would indeed signal that University Avenue was a place on the rebound, that it was a place to do business, to live, to stroll, and that it was a worthy entrance to the City. He saw it as an opportunity to celebrate community, to leave partisan politics behind, for the citizenry to look in the mirror and laugh.

The festival attracts musicians from the full spectrum of northern cultures; aboriginal and non-aboriginal artists come together to compare different styles of work and learn new techniques. Our theme for 2008 is “ Homecoming”. For 20 years we have hosted a range of artists from across the north for 10 art filled days of fun, laughter, music, and inspiration. What is Summer Carnival

After celebrating carnival had spread virtually throughout the entire world from its origins in Europe, it had developed into a chain of individual identities and forms. Even the German and Dutch forms of carnival strongly diverge from that of the carnival in Nice, in France. The carnival phenomenon took on a character all its own, especially in the Caribbean area. The most famous one is Rio of course, but Trinidad and Tenerife have their own versions too with, artistically, distinctive forms of expression.
Globalisation has resulted in the Caribbean translation of this originally Western cultural expression appearing in a new guise. A noted example of this is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Europe has also been confronted with this new phenomenon. Best examples of this are Notting Hill Carnival and Summer carnival. An initially Antillean and Aruban occasion, Summer carnival has grown over the years into an event with which many cultures can identify. Nowadays Surinam, Brazil, Cape Verde and Bolivia are among the visible influences. People have come together, giving birth to a new national tradition. Summer carnival has developed its own content and its own artistic profile. There was a fusion of influences between diverse points of the compass and an event was born with a character all its own.

The growth of Summer Carnival, both in size and quality, meant that the city of Rotterdam then embraced the event. Any one thinking of New Orleans, thinks of Mardi Gras. Pictures of Summer Carnival are increasingly featured in promotion material for the city of Rotterdam. Everyone is proud of this event. It is festive, colourful, proud and a protest - all at the same time. Its form appeals to a wide audience. Increasingly, the designers of costumes are viewed as artists and the dancers as artistes. Summer Carnival transforms the city centre into the biggest stage in the Netherlands.

The media also perceive Summer Carnival's attractiveness, so the event is published in newspapers and television far over the Dutch border. Not only in Western Europe, but also in South and North America and Eastern Europe.
In addition to attending to the more visual forms of expression, Summer Carnival also pays careful attention to the presentation of traditional and contemporary music trends. In addition to the 25 live orchestras in the parade, Summer Carnival presents national and international artistes on the stage. In the past, Oscar D'Leon, Gruppo Gale, Kassav, Daniela Mercury, Terra Samba, Issac Delgado were on view. All stars from overseas, and all set to conquer West Europe in the future too. International co-operation is growing every day. Co-operation projects are being developed with groups or organisations.

The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival is set to be one of the most exciting events on the summer festival calendar, and following on from the success of last year's comedy event, an extra day has been added. The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival will now take place over four days from the Thursday 24 July to Sunday 27 July 2008 in the stunning setting of the Iveagh Gardens.

The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival will play host to over 65 International and Irish acts, playing 50 shows over one unique carnival weekend. These will be performed in four magnificent, fully-seated, purpose-built marquees, including the impressive and atmospheric Iveagh Theatre tent, the Comedy Factory (which will feature a bespoke pop-art interior), the intimate Shack and the stunning Magic Mirrors Palace, a Spiegeltent, which is being shipped in from Belgium.

Coldplay achieved worldwide fame with the release of their single "Yellow", followed by their debut album, Parachutes (2000), which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Its follow-up, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), was named NME's Album of the Year. Their next release, X&Y (2005), received a generally positive reception. The band's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, was produced by Brian Eno and released on 17 June 2008 again to largely favourable reviews. All of Coldplay's albums have enjoyed great commercial success.

Coldplay's early material was compared to acts such as Jeff Buckley, Radiohead,U2, and Travis.Since the release of Parachutes, Coldplay have drawn influence from other sources, including Echo and the Bunnymen, Kate Bush and George Harrison[6] on A Rush of Blood to the Head, Johnny Cash and Kraftwerk for X&Y and Arcade Fire and My Bloody Valentine on Viva la Vida.Coldplay have been an active supporter of various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. The group have also performed at various charity projects such as Band Aid 20, Live 8, and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Prodigy is an electronic music group formed by Liam Howlett in 1990, in Braintree, Essex, England. Along with The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method, and a few other lesser-known acts, they were pioneers of the big beat electronic dance genre. They have sold over 16 million records worldwide which is unequaled in electronic music history.Their music consists of various styles ranging from rave, hardcore and industrial in the early 1990s to alternative rock and big beat with punk vocal elements in later times. The current band members include Liam Howlett (composer/keyboards), Keith Flint (dancer/vocalist) and Maxim (MC/vocalist). Leeroy Thornhill (dancer/very occasional live keyboards) was a member of the band from 1990 to 2000, as well was a female dancer/vocalist called Sharky who left the band during their early period. The Prodigy first emerged on the underground rave scene in the early 1990s, and have since then achieved immense popularity and worldwide renown. Some of their most popular songs include "Charly", "Out of Space", "Smack My Bitch Up", "Voodoo People", "No Good (Start the Dance)", "Breathe" and "Firestarter".

The name displayed on album covers changed from "The Prodigy" to "Prodigy" between Music for the Jilted Generation and The Fat of the Land in 1997 and back again with the release of Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned in 2004. However, Howlett has stated that the title has always been "The Prodigy". The change was made only to fit within the displayed logo, according to Howlett.

The old website had a section dedicated to the future of The Prodigy, the only info was "We have started writing and recording new material for the 5th Prodigy album. We will be recording for the most of next year as well as playing live around the globe. Liam, Keith & Maxim." They have been confirmed as performing at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park in June 2008, as well as T In the Park and Oxegen in July and on the Channel 4 stage at V Festival and Jersey Live in August.

Richard Melville Hall, also known as Moby (born September 11, 1965 in Harlem, New York) is an American DJ, songwriter, musician and singer.

John Clayton Mayer (born October 16, 1977) is an American singer-songwriter. Originally from Connecticut, he attended Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1998, where he refined his skills and gained a following. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy for "Your Body Is a Wonderland".

Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock and pop, but gradually began a transition towards the blues genre in 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. The blues influence can be heard on his album Continuum, released in September 2006. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change". Mayer's career pursuits have extended to stand-up comedy, design, and writing; he has written pieces for magazines, most notably for Esquire. He is also involved in philanthropic activities through his "Back to You" fund and his concern over global warming.

Sugar Ray is a rock band with members from Newport Beach, Orange County, California.

Sugar Ray formed in 1992 calling themselves The Shrinky Dinx, later having to change it (upon threat of lawsuit from the Milton Bradley Company, maker of the Shrinky Dinks toy) to Sugar Ray after the boxer Sugar Ray Leonard.

The debut album, Lemonade and Brownies, was released in 1995, though it failed to produce a major hit. Their early work was strongly influenced by funk metal, pop, and alternative rock.
