Registration for this class occurs directly with Otis College; however, the class takes place at the Skirball.

In this dynamic writing workshop, students will uncover material for an autobiographical memoir or work of fiction from personal life experiences. The course urges students to move between the worlds of fiction and nonfiction to find their stories and voices. Through readings and workshop discussions, students will learn to mine their personal histories for subject matter and transform this raw material into a story. Students are taught the craft of writing, including how to invent and reinvent from memory, maintain perspective, render characters, construct dialogue, employ sensory detail and other strategies of description, and deal with issues of truth and integrity. Finished works may be a personal essay, a short story, a novella, or chapters of a memoir or novel.

Instructor: Martha Fuller has an MA in English literature from Claremont Graduate School, and earned her MFA in creative photography at California State University, Fullerton. Bring all your leftover summer reading or those books you thought you'd need for that class you didn't end up taking and leave with some great stuff to carry you through the fall. All leftover books will be donated to a local charity (http://www.upwardboundhouse.org).

There will be refreshments and plenty of room to mingle. We just got word of two very happening events they'll be holding over the summer. The first is a Literary Salon, and the second is an ongoing happenings every Friday and Saturday evening through the end of August. Both sound like a great way to meet new people, or a fabulous warm summer night date night.

Details from their site/newsletter:

Literary Salon:

Time: Saturday, July 18, 2009 4:00 p.m.
Location: Skylight Books
Yearning for witty repartée and intellectual stimulation? How about wine and hors d'œuvres? Skylight Books cordially invites you to join us for our new monthly series, Skylight Salon, where our staff shares their faves from small presses and independent publishers. A modern-day mixer for the literary minded.
This month we feature: POETRY
Hot Summer Nights Friday/Saturday Nights:

"From July 10 until the end of August we will stay open till midnight on Friday and Saturday nights! In the words of Steve and Justin at our store, we'll have "free coffee, killer atmosphere, book specials, smelly boys, lovely women, music probably too loud to read to, genre-f*cking, busking, ice cream, and real talk! We'll have vibe inducing events like moody DJs, experimental films, musicians of the heart, and snacks." Or at least some version of these will happen on different nights. So come on by if you are in the neighborhood...maybe after a movie next door at the Los Feliz 3 or the Vista, a late dinner at Fred 62 or Cafe Figaro, on the way to or from Ye Rustic Inn, Vermont Restaurant, the Dresden Room, Palermo Ristorante, or any other of our wonderful neighbors. See you in the moonlight... We'll kick off the first night (Fri 7/10) after 10pm with musical 'busking' by Arlo and Aisling.

--- www.eventsforwriters.com

Your zip code, your people, your culture, your pajamas.

Monday June 29th

Theme: MAIL
Host: Jackie Clarke

Time: 7:00 Doors
7:30 Stories begin

Admission: $6 at the door
Location: Air Conditioned Supper Club
625 Lincoln Boulevard, Venice
(3 blocks south of Rose Avenue)
Directions for Participation: Prepare a five-minute story involving a mailbox. Love letters, junk mail, hate mail, fan mail, Dear John, ransom notes, court orders, news from the admissions office. Think mail order brides, brown paper packages, test results. Take us back to breaking the seal on the letter that changed your life! Email, telegrams, parcels, chain mail and other special deliveries.

How it Works:
7:00 PM sign up to tell a story, volunteer to be on a judging team or just sit back and listen. 7:30 (SHARP), the first name is picked and the show begins. Each teller has five minutes to tell his/her tale. After each story, the judges confer, and give a score. The teller with the highest score becomes our StorySLAM winner. The winner will compete with the year's other winners in our next GrandSLAM Championship.

Warning:
The Moth is NOT a venue for readings; it is a venue for TELLINGS. No notes, papers, or cheat sheets allowed. Contestants are judged on sticking to the five-minute time frame, sticking to the theme and having a story that sticks -- one that has a conflict and a resolution.

Story tips:
No standup routines please. The Moth LOVES funny people but requires that all funny people tell funny STORIES.
