The panel includes:

Rhonda Bloom is a literary manager and producer. Her clients include writer Kelly Masterson (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) and writer Ahmed Lavalais (Fox series' The Inside, K-Ville.) Prior to becoming a manager, she worked as a vice president for Paula Weinstein's Spring Creek Productions, Producer's Entertainment Group, The Larry Thompson Organization, Dan Blatt Prods. and for Zanuck-Brown as a story editor. She has produced several telefilms for CBS, Showtime and Fox.

Vicki McCarty is a talent and literary manager and a producer. She has worked with such actors as Faith Ford (Murphy Brown, Hope & FaithI), Linda Gray (Dallas) and Cynthia Preston (General Hospital). Her company, Covington International, reps director Thom Fitzgerald. She executive produced Fitzgerald's multi-award winning feature film The Event, starring Olympia Dukakis, Parker Posey, and Sarah Polley.

Autobiography, Memoir, or Fiction

Mondays, September 14-November 23 (no class September 28), 7:00-10:00 p.m. (10 sessions)

In a shared commitment to art education, the Skirball Cultural Center is pleased to partner with Otis College of Art and Design to bring art and writing classes to the Learning for Life program. Registration for this class occurs directly with Otis College; however, the class takes place at the Skirball.

In this dynamic writing workshop, students will uncover material for an autobiographical memoir or work of fiction from personal life experiences. The course urges students to move between the worlds of fiction and nonfiction to find their stories and voices. Through readings and workshop discussions, students will learn to mine their personal histories for subject matter and transform this raw material into a story. Students are taught the craft of writing, including how to invent and reinvent from memory, maintain perspective, render characters, construct dialogue, employ sensory detail and other strategies of description, and deal with issues of truth and integrity. Finished works may be a personal essay, a short story, a novella, or chapters of a memoir or novel.

Instructor: Martha Fuller has an MA in English literature from Claremont Graduate School, and earned her MFA in creative photography at California State University, Fullerton. Fuller is an exhibiting fine artist specializing in photography and artists' books. She has taught numerous courses in these subjects.

Tony Barnstone is The Albert Upton Professor of English Language and
Literature at Whittier College. His books of poems include The Golem of Los
Angeles (Red Hen Press, 2008, winner, Benjamin Saltman Award); Sad Jazz:
Sonnets (Sheep Meadow Press, 2005); and Impure: Poems by Tony Barnstone
(University Press of Florida, 1998), in addition to the chapbook Naked Magic
(Main Street Rag). He is also a distinguished translator of Chinese poetry
and literary prose and an editor of literary textbooks. Among his awards
are a fellowship from the NEA, a fellowship from the California Arts
Council, a Pushcart Prize in Poetry, and 1st place in in the 2008
Strokestown International Poetry Prize. His new book of poems, Tongue of
War: From Pearl Harbor to Nagasaki, won the John Ciardi Prize in Poetry, and
will be published by BKMK Press in 2009.

Kathleen Tyler lives in Los Angeles where she teaches English at a local
high school. Her publications include The Secret Box from Mayapple Press,
and My Florida from Backwaters Press. Her poems have appeared in numerous
journals including Visions International, Runes, Solo, Poetry Motel, Margie,
Seems, Cider Press Review, and others. She has been the featured reader at
many Southern California venues such as Beyond Baroque, Skylight Books,
Cobalt Café, World Stage, Venice Grind, and the Church in Ocean Park. A poem
from My Florida was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Most recently, a poem of
hers was a finalist in the 2009 dA Center for the Arts Prize.

Think mail order brides, brown paper packages, test results. Take us back to breaking the seal on the letter that changed your life! Email, telegrams, parcels, chain mail and other special deliveries.

How it Works:
7:00 PM sign up to tell a story, volunteer to be on a judging team or just sit back and listen. 7:30 (SHARP), the first name is picked and the show begins. Each teller has five minutes to tell his/her tale. After each story, the judges confer, and give a score. The teller with the highest score becomes our StorySLAM winner. The winner will compete with the year's other winners in our next GrandSLAM Championship.

Warning:
The Moth is NOT a venue for readings; it is a venue for TELLINGS. No notes, papers, or cheat sheets allowed. Contestants are judged on sticking to the five-minute time frame, sticking to the theme and having a story that sticks -- one that has a conflict and a resolution.

Story tips:
No standup routines please. The Moth LOVES funny people but requires that all funny people tell funny STORIES. Steer clear of meandering endings.

Scholarship and Application Information (as listed on Writing Away Retreats' website):

1. Free Tuition for One or Both Oct. '09 Sessions

Theme: Burning Down the House

Deadline for Entries: July 1, 2009

Details: Up to 5K word short story, 3 poems or 5K word essay may be submitted.

You may only submit once and submissions must be based upon the theme.

Entry Fee: $20.00 and includes a 10% discount off cost of the retreat if you do not win contest.

Email entries attached as a Microsoft Word document to creativelivesworkshop@hotmail.com and a paypal invoice will be sent to you for confirmation of entry and payment.

Final Round entries are judged by the staff of the retreat, including a top-notch lit. agent and editor from Harper Collins.

Winners will be announced on August 1, 2009.

Winner receives all tuition paid for retreat, not including transportation to
and from Breckenridge, CO.
2. Dishes Partial-Tuition Scholarship:
60% off of a five day or eleven day retreat for October, 2009.

Be the lucky one to do the dishes and help in the kitchen.

Deadline: June 15th, 2009

Winner Announced: July 1, 2009

Submit ala Letterman Style, a top-ten list of why you should be the person chosen to do the dishes of other writers/agents/editors.

Commitment: 2.5-3 hours a day of kitchen work.

Prize: 60% off full tuition for October retreat. May pick five or eleven day retreat to attend.

If first place winner asks for five day retreat, second place winner will have their pick of the session not signed up for by first place winner.

Entries are free.

Must go to creativelivesworkshop@hotmail.com and list should be in body of email with name, phone number, email address and choice of five day, eleven day and if choosing five day, which session is the preference if chosen as winner.

Judged by a committee of the insane.

All entries will receive a 5% discount to the retreat just for entering.

Winner(s) will receive all services as if a full paying writer, as well as have preference for sign-up times for one-on-one sessions with agents/editors and authors during
retreat.

Writing Away Retreats includes:

The opportunity to get 10K words critiqued from each staff member at their session.

Session I in October includes agents from Folio Literary, Fairbank Literary and the Owner/Editor of Red Hen Press.

Session II includes an agent from Sterling Lord Literistic, JaBerworcky Lit and an editor from Harper Perennial.

Each retreat also includes three gourmet meals a day and lodging in a million dollar+ mountain lodge

SEVEN remarkable life stories written and shared by the people who experienced them. Readings of journey, challenge, and hope, from Los Angeles to halfway around the world - an elegant life story of a first generation Japanese American in California, a determined quest for wages denied, an old man exiled from his native Chile, a migrant farm worker father as remembered by his daughter, crossing the DMV line in North Carolina, a "military brat" growing up a mile away from the Berlin Wall, and a Palestinian-Jordanian American experiencing unexpected questions in the West Bank.
