Or, at the very least, crawling out from under the rock from which he has been hiding.</p> <p>I am sure that there are those who will argue that this release is probably not worth of a full-fledged bump in the version numbers, and there are bound to be reasons why you are right. But there are also surely prior releases that were worth more than a minor bump as well. If you haven't, then you surely will. The news is just about everywhere, at least for now.</p> <p>What is perhaps most interesting is what is yet to be said - that there is little happening other than the news of the fork itself. While lots of places seemingly have lots to say (<a href="http://www.cmswire.com/cms/web-cms/movable-type-mtos-forks-hello-open-melody-004890.php">here</a>, <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/25/movable-type-experts-team-up-on-melody-an-open-source-publishing-platform/">here</a>, <a href="http://foolswisdom.com/movable-type-communitys-melody/">here</a>, <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10270621-2.html">here</a>), there has mostly been no response.</p> <p><strong>Where is the Love?</strong></p> <p>The Open Melody web site - which looks beautiful - has a <a href="http://openmelody.org/contribute/feedback">feedback page</a>. But you can't actually leave feedback there. To do that, you need to check out <a href="http://openmelody.org/blog/">the blog</a> pages. Even there, you won't find a lot of discussion. A congratulation, a note about not being able to log in, a question about why the project was forked (without an answer at the moment) and some discussion about badges.</p> <p>Looking at the participants - Arvind, <a href="http://www.majordojo.com/2009/06/meet-melody-and-the-people-behind-melody.php">Byrne</a>, <a href="http://www.eatdrinksleepmovabletype.com/announcements/introducing_melody/">Dan</a>, <a href="http://blog.plasticmind.com/cms/melody/">Jesse</a>, <a href="http://mark.stosberg.com/blog/2009/06/movable-type-fork-is-an-opportunity-to-harness-cpan.html">Mark</a>, Su and <a href="http://appnel.com/2009/06/breaking-the-silence-meet-melody">Tim</a> - only five comments have been left (3 on Byrne's entry, 2 on Mark's). Most are curious why the project was forked in the first place, since MT already had a community-backed <a href="http://www.movabletype.org/opensource/">Open Source</a> version.</p> <p>As I wasn't in on the planning, I can't answer that question, so I'll leave it to someone else to do so. It's just interesting that there is so little activity. Not to slight those involved, as it's good to see <em>something</em> going on, as I use <em>Movable Type</em> a great deal, and anything that gets people talking is good. It would just be nice to see more conversation and fewer monologues.</p> <p><strong>What Now?</strong></p> <p>Though I wasn't in on it, I am fully behind the idea of a completely open source (or Open Source, perhaps) publishing system. So much so, that I have <a href="http://github.com/jayseae/melody/tree">created a copy</a> in <a href="http://github.com/jayseae">my Github account</a>.</p> <p>I have also installed and am using this code. Right here. In production. To my knowledge, this is the first live, ready-for-the-world site powered by Melody. Go ahead. Look at the source code. You'll see it right there at the top:</p> <p><code><meta name="generator" content="OpenMelody Core 1.0" /></code></p> <p>For the record, that includes the Melody site and those of the contributors listed above.</p> <p>I'm not pointing this out to be contrary or difficult - their sites are bound to get way more hits than this one, and there are certainly reasons why they would rather run on other versions of MT (MTE, 4.21, 4.23, 4.25, 4.26), so it's understandable that they should run on something more stable than the alpha-version of the Melody code and take their time upgrading to something more stable.</p> <p>Luckily, this gives me the opportunity to upgrade while they weren't looking, and it means that I'll be happy to help if you would like to do the same.</p> <p><a href="http://everitz.com/contact.php">Let me know how I can help</a>.</p> <p><strong>Update</strong>: Unfortunately, the publishing and commenting problems I encountered were too much to overcome at the moment, so I'm back to producing the site on Movable Type (v4.261, in case you are wondering). For better or worse, this is a behavior that you will see on recent versions because of the fact that the history file (introduced with <a href="http://everitz.com/mt/notifier/3.5.0.php">version 3.5.0</a>) didn't always work quite right. These bugs should have been completely worked out in <a href="http://everitz.com/mt/notifier/4.0.4.php">version 4.0.4</a>. Naturally, since some of you have been using MT-Notifier longer than that, you wouldn't have had history records anyway, but the end result is that you may find yourself with some notifications just waiting for the right time to be sent.</p> <p>This can happen at any time that a comment or entry is saved, because that is when MT-Notifier is invoked. Previously, MT-Notifier attempted to try and figure out when it should run, but the problem with that is the duplicate processing detection never worked quite right - which is what led to the whole mess in the first place. Now MT-Notifier runs on any comment or entry save, which means even the oldest of comments or entries will invoke it. But you may also end up with lots of notifications being sent. As you probably know, until recently, trying to manage that list of subscribers has not been an easy task. Way back in the early days of <a href="http://everitz.com/mt/notifier/index.php">MT-Notifier</a> you had to do all your subscriber management through a series of drop-down menus. Then a rudimentary admin interface was created by <em>Blumunky</em>, and finally back in version <a href="http://everitz.com/mt/notifier/3.5.0.php">3.5.0</a>, I added an actual, honest-to-goodness interface to the plugin itself. But as you have likely discovered, paging through a number of entries (thousands, hundreds, or even dozens) to find one of those subscribers is still a bit unpleasant, and it's just not ideal.</p> <p>With recent versions of <a href="http://www.movabletype.org/">Movable Type</a>, it became possible for plugins to register their own object types (like subscriptions). Those objects could even be searched based on registering a search API. But until recently, I had been unable to crack that code (sometimes the code is, shall we say, less than well-documented). So if you had tried to use the <em>Search Subscriptions</em> box in the upper-right corner to actually help speed the process of finding a subscription in your monstrous list of subscribers, you would be met with an ugly error message. This appears to be due to something in the upgrade process, as near as I can tell, saving entries during the upgrade, which triggers a save through <a href="http://everitz.com/mt/notifier/index.php">MT-Notifier</a>, thinking that it might have something new to send.</p> <p>If you want to avoid new notifications being sent out, and you are a registered user of MT-Notifier version four, drop me a line prior to upgrading. There is a version of MT-Notifier that I have which will allow you to create history records for all of your subscribers, effectively marking all of your existing subscribers as if they have already been notified of all entries on your system. As luck would have it, that success continued. To begin with, the ARP blog has been <a href="http://allisonrodgers.typepad.com/blog/2008/06/on-the-typepad-homepage.html">featured on the TypePad homepage</a> (I linked to the ARP story there, just in case TypePad decided to rotate their images). After that, however, I had a number of requests from people on TypePad. It's really amazing that there are so many photography-focused blogs on TypePad. I never would have imagined!</p> <p>In any case, though I've had quite a few requests, a number of them are still in the investigation or planning stages, but one of them has actually rolled out some changes: The <a href="http://gigiphotography.typepad.com/gigiblog/">Gigi Photography Blog</a>. Gillian - Gigi herself - contacted me about making some changes similar to those made at ARP. Namely, she liked the drop-down menus that we had put into place, as well as updating the sidebars to make some more room for her photo content and we even included the comments right on the home page and the other entry listing pages (the monthly archives, since she doesn't have categories on her blog).</p> <p>To do this, we needed to upgrade her account to the <strong>pro</strong> level, since the advanced templates aren't available to any of the lesser accounts. Luckily, TypePad makes this a really painless process. Painless for everything but the checkbook, that is (and even there it's not too bad - costing just a bit more over a <strong>plus</strong> account. Just visit the <strong>account info</strong> tab on the <strong>control panel</strong> and follow the <strong>upgrade/downgrade</strong> steps. Within a few minutes, you'll be all set!</p> <p>After we had the ability to make the changes to an advanced template set, implementing the changes was a breeze, and it means that Gillian can continue to blog about her adventures in photography, just as she always has - something that was of paramount importance. But I need a couple people who can check it out. You're welcome to try it if you have a lot of subscribers, but it's probably best if you don't have too many, just in case. Nothing should break, but I'm curious if we can get it to work without having to worry about if you have to save in unpublished mode first.
