The first, a girl with long white hair and a split little finger, says things like:

“I grow weary of the journeying, and I wish sometimes that it would end. On a street in Rio at Carnival, I saw them on a bridge, golden and tall and insect-eyed and winged, and elated I almost ran to greet them, before I saw that they were only people in costumes. I said to Hola Colt, ‘Why do they try so hard to look like us?’ and Hola Colt replied, ‘Because they hate themselves, all shades of pink and brown, and so small.’ It is what I experience, even me, and I am not grown. It is like a world of children, or of elves.”

To which Enn’s response is: do you want to dance? The second girl, this time with short dark hair and a gap between her two front teeth, says even more obviously revealing things like:

“But there was no reasoning with it, and I came to world. Parent-teacher engulfed me, and I was here, embodied in a decaying lump of meat hanging on a frame of calcium. As I incarnated I felt things deep inside me, fluttering and pumping and squishing. It was my first experience with pushing air through the mouth, vibrating the vocal cords on the way, and I used it to tell parent-teacher that I wished that I would die, which it acknowledged was the inevitable exit strategy from world.”

To which Enn’s response is to try the casual stretch-out-arm-and-put-it-around-her trick. Strangely, this does not deter the girl: instead she starts talking to him about a poem that encodes the information of her people, which the aliens may or may not be here to disseminate, and which may or may not transform humanity. Just as Enn is falling under the girl’s spell, Vic, who has been upstairs with Stella, appears and insists they both leave the party, obviously traumatized by whatever he’s seen. The end.

So: the girls at the party actually are aliens, except that because Enn is expecting girls to be alien, he doesn’t notice. It’s a good thing the story isn’t any longer than it is; in any case, it nearly outstays its welcome. It rather strains credibility that even expecting girls to be aliens, even when drunk, Enn doesn’t twig that there’s something odd about the people he’s talking to, given some of the things they say. What gives the story the little edge it has, I’d say, is that there’s a grain of truth in the girls-as-aliens thing, for boys of the narrator’s age: the gap between being on one side of puberty and being on the other side of it is real, and can be daunting. But then, although girls often do mature sooner than boys, they don’t do so universally, so it’s as much a puberty thing as it is a sex thing. That is: as a young teenage boy, in many ways, older boys come from a different world just as much as do girls of your own age.

A few nuggets of discussion about the story from elsewhere. Megan Messinger at Tor.com, as an example of an unbeloved plot:

My least favorite of these is “a magic thing happened, and then it went away.” A prime example is Neil Gaiman’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” Yes, I know it was nominated for a Hugo, and yes, it was well-written, sentence by sentence and even scene by scene; I pick on it partially because the full text is available online. (With all sincerity, that’s pretty cool.) But the plot is, boys go to party, talk to girl-shaped clone-type alien beings, everyone tries to put the moves on each other, boys leave party. The story ends

The streetlights came on, one by one; Vic stumbled on ahead, while I trudged down the street behind him in the dusk, my feet treading out the measure of a poem that, try as I might, I could not properly remember and would never be able to repeat.
So there is a bit about growing up, and the magic thing going away is a handy metaphor for childhood or innocence, but the boys themselves don’t get it. They don’t change. There is a wisp of understanding that dissipates and leaves me unsatisfied at the end. Most of the appeal and cleverness lies in the story saying, “Look! Neil Gaiman has literalized a metaphor about teenage boys trying to relate to the fair sex!” and I don’t buy into it.

(This is fair enough although, as I say, the story’s brevity inclines me to let him get away with it.)

Obviously, Vic makes a good point. Girls really are just people, and treating them as completely incomprehensible aliens is going to be a barrier to communication, or, in the case of this story, allow Enn to mistake completely incomprehensible aliens for girls. But, as someone who is actually a girl, pointing out that girls are people was not an insight that rocked my world.
There are interesting implications in the fact that the girl-shaped aliens want to impregnate Enn not with larvae, but with a memetic virus, a poem that will reshape humanity. Is this meant to contrast to a fear of the sexually liberated woman? This was not truly explored.
“Talking to Girls at Parties” is like watching a magician pull out of a hat, not a rabbit, but a hatpin, while a rabbit hops across the stage.
So the story failed to deliver that sharp twist which I particularly like in short stories, but it is quite decent at completely incomprehensible aliens. If you like your aliens with truly other biology and societies, this story is worth checking out.

(I’m not sure the aliens really are all that strange, but clearly that’s something on which mileage will vary.)

I was expecting good things from Neil Gaiman’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties”–the story has gotten a lot of positive buzz and I usually do better with Gaiman’s short fiction than with his novels–which might be why the story left me slightly cold. Which is not to say that “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” is bad. It isn’t. It’s a Neil Gaiman story–funny, well-written, mildly original. It is also, however, so thoroughly Gaiman-ish that, three paragraphs in, I was struck by the perverse conviction that it had been written by a clever impersonator, or possibly a Gaiman-bot. It was, I believe, the sentence “While it would be a lie to say that we had no experience with girls—Vic seemed to have had many girlfriends, while I had kissed three of my sister’s friends” that did the trick. That’s a Neil Gaiman sentence, I thought. I’ve read that sentence, or some tonal of stylistic variant on it, several times before. It’s an impression that persists throughout the story: here’s the shy, clever but socially inept narrator; here’s the narrator’s wacky friend; here’s the not-so-subtle setup (‘”They’re just girls,” said Vic. “They don’t come from another planet.”‘–you can write the rest of the story yourself from this point, can’t you?); here’s weirdness compounding itself around the oblivious narrator; here’s the lucky escape back into normalcy. None of it is done badly, and it’s not even the lack of originality that is my primary complaint against the story. I just prefer Gaiman when he’s writing outside of his comfort zone, actually working to elicit genuine emotion from his audience rather than trying to strike that half-wistful, half-knowing tone that permeates so much of his fiction and usually puts me in mind of a clever teenager whose writing isn’t nearly as profound as he thinks it is. “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” is smack dab in the middle of that comfort zone, and so, like a great deal of Gaiman’s fiction, my reaction to it is a combination of admiration and distaste.

How To Forget Someone

Step 1:
Cry out everything you have to cry about! When we get hurt, it's normal (and good) to cry. Don't ever think you're being weak for crying and don't feel embarrassed because of it! It's normal and it's good! When you cry, you let go of part of your anger and hurt so you can feel less heavy. You can lock yourself in a room, if you want to, and put on some sad music...but let yourself feel the pain and cry so you can let it go. The main thing here is: Get rid of the pain! Just let her go!

Step 2:
Get busy! When you're trying to get someone out of your head, you need to put other things inside of it. In other words...get busy! It doesn't matter how, you just need to get distracted. Go to a movie, watch a play, travel. It doesn't matter what are you going to do--the important thing is to find something to do. Find a hobby, find something you enjoy doing, something to keep your mind busy. If your mind is busy, it doesn't have time or space to think about the person you're trying to forget.

Step 3:
Spend some time with your friends. Friends are always great to have in this kind of situation! Friends can make you feel good about yourself and get you distracted very easily. They will certainly make you laugh and make you see that you're way more important than you think! The only warning is: Ask them not to talk about the person you're trying to forget. If they start bringing the topic up in every conversation, you won't be able to forget, and instead of making you laugh, they're going to make you cry. So be honest and ask them not to talk about it!

Step 4:
Avoid the person! Try not to go to places you know you can meet that person. When you're trying to forget someone and you two keep seeing each other, it gets hard to get over it. If you meet him/her somewhere, just be nice and kind, but find an excuse to go away as fast as you can! If you work or study with him/her and you can't avoid seeing him/her, just try not to look and not to talk too much. Just be gentle and keep busy all the time so you won't have excuses to look at him/her or to chat.

Healing A Broken Heart

It is inevitable. At least once in our relatively short lives, there will be a person whom we shall love greatly, around whom we shall let our lives revolve, but who will only disappoint us and break our heart. That person could be a parent or a sibling, or a spouse, a child or a very close friend. The first time the heart is ever broken, it is always accompanied by tremendous pain, and it feels like we could die from it and the world for us is at its end.

But no matter how great the pain we have suffered because of our heart getting broken, we will eventually realize that life has to go on and the world will continue spinning on its axis despite the ache we feel because of our broken heart.

Just how does one go on when her heart is broken? How does one continue with her shattered life amidst the broken pieces? The answer to these questions is to learn to pick up the pieces, mend them and start again.

Seek the path of healing by reaching out and helping others. In this way, our eyes shall be open to the fact that we are not the only ones in this world who are hurting and that there are other people out there whose pain is greater than ours. If we focus too much on ourselves, we tend to amplify our own hurts. If we focus on the needs of others, we learn to forget our own pain and eventually gain healing.

With healing comes laughter. There was once an old song by Nat King Cole exhorting his listeners to “smile though your heart is aching.” It is true: laughter is indeed the best medicine we could ever need to heal a broken heart. Find something to laugh at, like a funny story or a sitcom on TV. Laughter does the heart good.

Mending a broken heart also requires change. For once, break your old habits and build new ones. If you are not fond of going out for some fresh air, try spending an hour or two in the afternoon just walking around your block. Go and watch a movie, perhaps, or treat yourself to a dinner for one at a fancy restaurant. You deserve to be happy, so you should do things that would make you happy.

Lastly, open your heart to the possibility of loving again. Life goes on; it does not stop because your heart is broken, and neither should you stop because it is. Think of this experience as a lesson in life. Soon enough, you will remember the day your heart got broken and you will smile because of it, because it has made your life richer than you have expected it to be.

Boy: You what?? YOU WHAT???
Girl: I have cancer and I’m on life support.
Boy: .....................>breaks into tears<......................
Girl: They're taking me off tonight.

Girl: I wanted to tell you, but I couldn’t .
Boy: Why didn’t you tell me????
Girl: I didn’t want to hurt you.
Boy: You could never hurt me.

The boy leaves and later that night the girl is taken off of life support and dies, but what the boy didn’t know is that the girl only asked him those questions so she could hear him say it one last time. She only broke up with him because she knew she only had 3 more weeks left to live and thought that it would cause him less pain and give him time to get over her before she died.

NEXT DAY

The boy is found dead with a gun in one hand and a note in the other.

Learning Baby Care

A newborn baby may seem very delicate, but there is nothing to worry about for as long as you learn baby care. At all times, be gentle and reassuring.
Picking a baby
Always take care to support his head.
1. With your right hand, gently, but firmly, take hold of his feet.
2. Bend over and raise the baby's feet just enough so that you can slide your left hand under his bottom and up his spine to the back of his neck.
3. Spread your fingers to support the baby's head and turn your arm so that your left wrist and forearm support his back. Spread your right hand under his bottom and lift slowly, supporting him with your arms.
Holding a baby
Hold the baby the way that is most comfortable for you.
Held to your shoulder - Supporting the baby carefully, lift him to your shoulder. Support his bottom with your right hand and his head with your left. Be careful not to let his head loll back, and make sure that he can see over your shoulder if he wishes.
Cradled in your arms - As you lift the baby, turn him so that his head is supported by the crook of your left elbow and your right hand is under his bottom. This position makes it possible for the baby to look at you while you are holding him.
Left arm free - Support the baby's spine and head with your right hand and arm so that he is held over your right hip, face up, under your arm. It is always safest to hold the baby with your strongest arm.
Bathing a baby
Bath the baby in a warm room. Wash your hands, then collect everything you need where you can reach it easily as you bath the baby. Have ready clean cotton wool, baby soap or a proprietary cleansing solution, a large towel or towelling apron to put on your knee and another towel to wrap the baby in, a clean nappy, any cream you use, and a baby bath. Put about 3 inches (75 mm) of water in the bath, pouring cold water in first - especially if the bath is a metal one — and then hot. Test the temperature with your elbow or the inside of your wrist. The water should feel neither hot nor cold. If you are using a solution, add it to the water following the manufacturer's instructions. Lift the baby on to your knee. Undress him, leaving his nappy on, and wrap him in a towel.
Before you put the baby in the bath, hold him under your left arm and wash his face with cotton wool and warm water from the bath. Use separate swabs for each side of his face and his ears and neck. Use more cotton wool to dry his face. Soap his head and rinse it, or wash it with solution from the bath. Pat his head dry with a towel. Take off his nappy, then wash his bottom carefully with cotton wool and soap, or cotton wool dipped in the solution. Wipe from front to back. Soap the baby's chest, arms and legs quickly so that he does not get cold. When the baby is older he can be soaped in the bath. If you are using solution you do not need to soap him. Dry your hands.
2. To put the baby in the bath, hold his left arm with your left hand and support his head with your left forearm. Hold his legs with your right hand — put a finger between his ankles to stop them from rubbing together. Lower him into the water, talking gently to him. Do not remove your right hand until he is used to the feel of the water, especially if this is his first bath.
3. Do not let go of the baby while he is in the bath. He cannot support himself and might slip underwater. To rinse his front: continue to support him with your left arm and hand and wash him with your right hand. This way there is no danger of his slipping.
4. To rinse the baby's back: change hands and hold his left arm with your right hand so that he is leaning on to your wrist. Do not leave him in the water longer than is necessary to see that he is properly rinsed, or he will get cold.
5. Lift the baby out of the bath, holding him as you did when putting him in. He is wet and slippery so take care. Wrap him in a dry towel.
6. Pat dry the baby's bottom, paying special attention to the creases. Apply petroleum jelly, zinc and castor oil or lotion. Put on his nappy.
7. Dry the baby's back and front and dress him in clean clothes. It is not necessary to use baby powder. Do not sit him on a damp towel.
Bottle-feeding
Sit on a low chair with your feet on the floor. Make sure your back is well supported, use a pillow if necessary. Cradle the baby in your arms so that his mouth is higher than his stomach and you can comfortably hold the bottle to his mouth. Hold the baby close to you. Do not give him the bottle propped up so that he can feed himself. He might choke, and he will be deprived of the comfort that a breast-fed baby gets from being cuddled by his mother.
1. Cold milk does not harm a baby and is safer than milk which is too warm, but the baby will prefer it at body temperature. Put the bottle of milk in a jug of water and leave it for five minutes. Test the temperature on your forearm. The milk should feel neither hot nor cold.
2. Touch the baby's cheek with one finger of the hand that is holding the bottle to let him know that it is near. He will turn towards the bottle pursing his lips. As he turns he will take the teat in his mouth and start sucking. Let him drink as much milk as he wants, he is the best judge of his needs. Do not worry if he fails to finish a bottle sometimes. So long as he seems content and is gaining weight normally there is nothing to be concerned about.
3. Hold the bottle firmly and keep it tilted so that the teat is always full of milk. This reduces the chance of too much air getting into the baby's stomach. A bottle-fed baby usually takes in too much air anyway, and you should stop once or twice during the feed to burp him. If the baby stops sucking early in the feed this is probably what is wrong.
Important note: Most babies are better off being breast-fed than bottle-fed. Breast milk provides more balanced nourishment for the baby and greater protection of his health.
Dressing a baby
Lay the baby on a changing mat on the floor, in a cot, or hold him on your knee. Do not dress him on a table or bed where he might roll off on to the floor.
1. Stretch the neck of the baby's vest wide open and carefully ease it over his head. Take care not to catch his nose or ears or jerk his head.
2. Hold one wrist of the vest open with your thumb and forefinger and ease the sleeve over the baby's fingers. Do the same with the other sleeve.
3. Pull down the vest. If you have difficulty putting a vest on a very small baby, you may find it easier to use a wrap-over vest, but make sure that any ties or buttons are securely sewn on.

It is very necessary on for babies to undergo the different immunizations needed. These may include:
1. BCG (one month) - protection against tuberculosis
2. DPT (two months) - protection against diptheria, pertusis, tetanus
3. Poliovirus Vaccine (3 months) - taken orally against polio
