Just spent 30 minutes on the phone with Microsoft support to figure out how one migrates (a crappy term to begin with. It suggests moving from one place to another. In reality it’s more of a 1-way sync) email accounts from an Exchange server to the mailboxes that come with Office 365 Small Business.

As you can see there’s no mention of Exchange or Migration when you sign in:

The trick is as follows:
* Click on Outlook, thereby starting the Outlook Web App (OWA).

* Edit the URL. Remove the part that starts with /owa and replace it with /ecp. Example: https://pod12345.outlook.com/owa/[something] becomes https://pod12345.outlook.com/ecp.

* Press ‘Enter’ and… voilà! There’s your Exchange admin center, with the option to create migration batches.
<a href="http://i0.wp.com/evert.meulie.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Office_365_Small_Business_4.png" rel="lightbox[35509]" title="Office 365 Small Business - Exchange migration.
Why hide it like this? Who knows…? Microsoft Moves in a Mysterious Way…

That places like these still exist in our modern world is appalling enough. But what I absolutely can’t understand is why Google allows people to add reviews to this place on its Google+ page.
I’m pretty sure that if someone would post a ‘funny’ review like these on the Google+-page of Auschwitz II – Birkenau or Dachau it would be removed promptly and/or legal action would be taken.

So why not show at least the same amount of respect/common sense for this active concentration camp as we show for the ones that were shut down >65 years ago?

As a fan of the ‘latest’ gadgets I’ve been scouring Interwebs to see if there are any thermometers out there which use WiFi to report their findings. There are quite a few square/rectangle boxes out there, but I was looking for something that was aesthetically pleasing as well.
The search brought me to Lascar Electronics, a UK/US company, and their EL-WiFi-TH product. This combined temperature/humidity datalogger has, according to the Lascar site, the following features:

WiFi capability and integrated display

Wireless connectivity to PC via WiFi

View and analyse multiple sensors using the PC application, including immediate graphing of historic data

Measurement range from -20 to +60°C (-4 to +140°F)

Rechargeable internal lithium polymer battery, said to last > 1 year on a charge with ‘typical use’.

Let’s look at these selling points with a critical mind:

Wifi capability: Yes, but apparantly only IEEE 802.11b-1999 compliant. Since my WiFi network currently only supports 802.11g & 802.11n it would mean I have to enable some ‘legacy’ settings to re-enable 802.11b

Wireless connectivity to PC via WiFi: It says ‘PC’, but what they really mean is: a computer running Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7 (no mention of Windows 8 yet), so if you use OS X or Linux, you’re outta luck…
(It may work under Wine on Linux. Worth checking out)

Measurement range: Hmm… Perhaps a good range for other parts of the world but here (in Norway) it means I can’t use the unit for outdoor measurements during the winter months, when the temperatures some times drop (quite a bit) below -20C/-4F. I think -40 to +40°C would be a more interesting range.

I have nothing critical/negative to say about the display nor the battery. Both are good!

Despite a few less-than-perfect points above I decided to order a unit anyway. It ‘arrived’ (the postal service in this country is a joke. Hardly anything larger than regular envelopes really arrives at your door. The rest you have to go and pick up at the post office…) last weekend, but I didn’t get around to the unboxing until last evening.

Since the quickguide in the box mentioned that the unit was partially charged but needs at least 24 hours of charging before actual use, all I could do was plug it into a USB-port and wait…
In the mean time I downloaded/installed the required (Windows only) software, which I obtained via the link at the bottom of the el-wifi datalogger page, on my Win7/x64 box.

The download link to the software reveals another interesting aspect: When it comes to these units Lascar Electronics apparently is a reseller/partner. The sensors are manufactuered by Corintech (Contract Electronics Manufacturing Services UK).
It’s a good idea to also drop by the page with firmware updates. In my case I found out that I can update my sensor (firmware 2.46) to firmware 2.50, and get ‘Battery Life Improvements’.
(For those who wonder, on Larasian.com I found the connection: Larasian is a holding company based at Burgate. Owned by Glynis and Brian Currie, Larasian owns 100% of Lascar Electronics and is the majority shareholder of CorinTech)

Day 2:
The EL-WiFi-TH (couldn’t they pick something more pronouncable?) is fully charged, and hooked up to my PC via USB. The configuration program is pretty straight-forward: You select the WiFi network the unit should connect to, give it a name, set the measuring & reporting intervals and set any alarms (optionally). Then you disconnect the USB cable and put the sensor at the measuring point, in my case a pantry.

Day 3:
Here are the first 12 hours or so of readings, with 10 seconds interval. As you can see a nice and stable temperature (3C. We’re talking basement pantry in the southeast of Norway here…).
Tonight I have to hook it up to the PC once more to apply that above-mentioned firmware update, but after that I plan to keep it in the pantry for the days/weeks/months to come.

More to follow

Ever since I’ve been riding shotgun in a motorized vehicle I’ve been flabbergasted/amazed/irritated by how some (dare I say: the majority of the) people drive on the highway here.

It’s all so simple… theoretically!

There are 1 or more lanes.

There is a speed limit (sometimes a separate one for trucks/lorries).

You pass people on the opposite side of where you’re driving: on the left in countries where one drives on the right, and on the right where one drives on the left.

You keep a safe distance to the vehicle in front of you.

I myself have the habit of driving exactly the speed limit. Not according to the speedometer in my car, because I am aware that these are never 100% accurate. In the USA federal law states speedometers cannot have an error of more than 5 percent (typically expressed as plus/minus 2.5 percent relative to the actual speed), and other countries have similar laws. I have determined with a GPS that when I have the speedometer on 106 km/hour I am actually doing 99-100 km/hour.

I’m located in Norway. Here the speed limit for cars on the highway is 100 km/hour, for trucks over 3.5 tons it’s 80 km/hour.

If I were to interpret the traffic rules to the letter then no one, with the exception of emergency vehicles with active warning devices such as lights and/or sirens, can legally pass me when I drive the exact legal speed limit. (If they’d do so, they’d be speeding). This is perhaps a bit of an oversimplification, but it is accurate.

The reality?
Most people do whatever pleases them! They switch lanes while totally ignoring markings on the road which forbid them to do so, they pass cars on the wrong side, etc etc.
And they speed! On the 11.3 kms/7 miles stretch of highway between my house and my office I get overtaken by many vehicles, every day. Some of them even trucks…

What about law enforcement, you may ask? I’m sorry to say, but they’re non-existent here, at least on the stretch of highway which is my commuter route. In all the time I’ve travelled up and down this road I have never, ever seen a single vehicle of the National Mobile Police Service ( Utrykningspolitiet ) in action.
And of course I’m probably not the only person who has noticed this lack of supervision. It’s most likely the main reason why so many people violate speed limits and other traffic rules…

My main frustration is that there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. Even writing this post is probably just a waste of time. Yes, I will mention the post on Facebook, Twitter & App.net. More waste of time.
Nothing will be done, and I will just continue to irritate myself about it every time I drive on that road. And I will continue to pay tax, part of which will go to Utrykningspolitiet so that they can… well, whatever they do. Patrolling the E6 is not it, unfortunately!

It boasts to have the highest power to weight ratio of any flashlight/torch in the world.

The Eon Extreme has <del datetime="2012-09-05T17:32:46+00:00">3</del> 4 settings:

Discreet eco light, 12 hours on a full charge

Hyperbright light, 2 hours on a full charge

Strobe light, 5 hours on a full charge

Slow strobe light, ? hours on a full charge (undocumented)

(Since I’ve only had the unit for less than a day (more about this later) now I can’t comment on the battery life myself yet.)

My first impression is that it’s a good solid product that delivers what it promises. Since there is no focusing head, you get very little throw (which is fine for the target of the product). When used in a small room (4×5 meters), at first glance, you would be surprised that you aren’t using an overhead fluorescent light in the room, so bright is it.

About the ordering/delivery process… I placed my order in November 2011, and the unit arrived… This week (August 2012)! It has taken me many, many emails to their customer support (which changed email addresses a couple of times during the process, and uses Gmail…). A couple of times I was promised the unit would be shipped ‘next week’, but when I checked back a couple of weeks later it was delayed once again. A similar experience with the CardSharp as well.
Can I recommend them? Well… Their products are great, no doubt about that! So if you have a lot of patience, and don’t mind ‘poking’ their customer service every now and then, go for it!

Update:
On November 14th I noticed my Eon Extreme wasn’t functioning properly anymore. I’v contacted Iain Sinclair who identified it as ‘a faulty unit’. I’ve returned it to them, and am now awaiting a new unit.
After they received it I was told (on November 27th) the shipping of the return unit ‘won’t be immediately as we don’t have the stock at the moment but I will prioritise yours as soon as we do and i’ll let you know once it’s been despatched’.

Update 2: February 13th, 2013 by now. Still no sign of the replacement…

Yup, yet another posting about the electric car parking facilities at Nordby köpcenter. This time it’s about people who apparently can’t read Swedish. Either that, or they’re just plain selfish bastards!
The dark car on the left clearly has a big, fat exhaust hole, and as far as I know the Peugeot 207 ain’t electric either…
Since it’s a bit unclear, these are the license plates (from left to right):
DL 21600 (Norwegian plate), LGZ 821 (Swedish) & LCC 493 (Swedish). In my opinion these cars should be banned from visiting Nordby in the future, since they don’t obey the rules set by the shopping center.

A couple of months ago I was a bit negative about the dedicated parking spots for electric cars at Nordby köpcenter (a huge shopping center in Sweden, just across the border from Norway and very popular by Norwegians).

* Nordby is no longer parking their own (non-electric) vehicles in this area.

* The spots have become popular!

Earlier today, when we were there, no less than 4 Nissan LEAF’s were squeezed into the area meant for 3 cars. (The 4th LEAF obviously wasn’t charging since there are only 3 230V outlets available).

I’m posting this update here in the hope that the people at Nordby (and other shops, public venues, etc) see how popular the electric cars have become in such a short time and that they perhaps even add a few more parking/charging spots.

Time for some Microsoft <del>bashing</del>… err… promoting! Yup, I don’t do that too often, for obvious reasons, in my opinion.

There are plenty of apps out there which let Android users automate tasks, performing their pre-defined actions when specific conditions are met. Microsoft thinks it can do one better than that, though, and has plans for a whole scripting system based on giving its users a large degree of control over just how their phones behave, without requiring lots of custom apps for every given situation.

Called on{X}, Microsoft is first debuting the system for Android, where it uses JavaScript to interpret end-user instructions. In order to make it accessible (despite its rather technical underpinnings), Microsoft breaks the relevant chunks of JavaScript code into triggers and actions, all configurable through a convenient GUI. By stringing together these bits, users create on{X} rules, which can then be shared with others online.

For instance, one on{X} rule might contain the triggers for the time being 8 a.m. and the local weather forecast mentioning rain, with the action that an alert should be displayed on the phone advising you to grab an umbrella. Others might contain triggers that detect when you’re out on a jog and a text message from a friend arrives, letting your phone automatically text back that you’ll respond when you’re done with your workout.

This certainly sounds like a system with great potential, and a lot of flexibility. However, its success or failure could lie with the strength of its development community, and just how appealing the pre-configured rules it shares with other users are.

While on{X} hits Android first, Microsoft hopes to bring it to other mobile platforms in the future. Yes, you read that correctly. on{X} is not supported on Windows Phone!
Hmm, a perfect place to quote Alanis Morissette:

And isn’t it ironic…don’t you think
A little too ironic…and, yeah, I really do think…

That is a question I hope to answer here. I hope to collect a complete listing of how much money each participating country has spent in total (national part + (if applicable) international part) on the Eurovision Song Contest 2012.
