FOR a while there it looked like the pre-season friendlies were going to start before Wimbledon ended, that last set went on for so long in the men's final.

The main attraction with these games is to see new signings, and last time the Blues visited Gigg Lane Andy Johnson was seen panicking in front of goal all day before being mobbed on the pitch at the final whistle.

Jo, who appears to be back for another season-long loan, will no doubt get a warm reception if he features tonight, but there doesn't seem too much danger of him, or Shkodran Mustafi and Anton Peterlin, getting stripped down to their shorts by gangs of adoring new fans in the same way that Johnson was.

The American midfielder's signing is a bit of an odd one, given that he's 22-years-old and only played in what is essentially the fourth tier of US domestic football. It's either really cruel, bringing him over to the promised land of the Premier League if he's not up to snuff, or else it's one of the most inspired pieces of scouting ever.

"Maybe Peterlin's like that Mexican lad who signed for Newcastle in the film Goal," someone commented the other day. Then added, "Apparently even he's asked for a move now because he doesn't want to play in the Championship."

Clearly everyone is waiting for the big signings of the summer, with Tuncay from Middlesbrough and Belgian midfielder Steven Defour now being linked.

The little Turkish striker always impressed, even in a poor Boro side, and the fact he can also play in midfield as well as up front makes him prime Moyes material. With £4million being bandied about though, it seems unlikely the Everton boss won't face a lot of competition.

Defour will cost considerably more, with stories suggesting the Blues have had a bid of around £13m already rejected by Liege. They probably figure that if we were willing to play £15m for Marouane Fellaini then we'll pony up more for the player widely regarded to be the most talented in the Belgian league. He certainly impressed in last season's UEFA Cup against Everton, and was outstanding at Anfield when Liege were edged out of the Champions League.

On that evidence at least, it will be well worth the wait if he does end up playing in royal blue next season.

CARLO NASH is set for a rare run-out in the Everton goal tonight as the Goodison club kick-off their preparations for the 2009/10 season at Bury (kick-off 7.45pm).

Nash arrived at Everton from Wigan on transfer deadline day last summer, but Tim Howard's form and consistency means he has spent 45 consecutive matches in the substitutes' dug-out.

But with Howard given an extended summer beak after helping take USA all the way to the final of the Confederations Cup this summer, Nash is in the frame to get some pre-season match action, starting with tonight's friendly at League Two Bury.

Nash explained: "It's obviously frustrating because any player wants to play, but unfortunately, as a goalkeeper, there's only one place you can play.

"I love competing for places though and you need that in any team to get the best out of players.

"I think the main factor depends on Tim's fitness. Obviously he's number one and I just have to wait for a chance to play. Hopefully, if I get a chance, I'll do the best I can."

Nash has plenty of league experience, most notably at Preston, Stockport and Manchester City, although his last senior football came on loan at Stoke at the end of the 2007/08 season.

But while tonight's friendly comes just four days after Everton started pre-season training, Nash does not believe the game has come too early in their preparations.

"Do I think it's too soon? No, not at all. It's good to get back in the swing of things. Even if we've not quite got our eyes back in, it's good to get some match practice in early doors."

While Everton are starting their prepartions for the new season early, though, they will have to wait to kick off the season proper.

Everton's opening game of the campaign, at home to Arsenal, has been moved to 5:15pm on Saturday August 15 and will be the first game delivered domestically by the American and worldwide sportscasting giant, ESPN.

Everton are not scheduled for ESPN again until their trip to Old Trafford in November, but they are listed for three live appearances on Sky Sports at Fulham and Portsmouth in September, and for the Goodison derby in November.

The trip to Fulham has been put back to Sunday, September 13 (4.15pm) and the Portsmouth clash an early kick off (12.45pm) on Saturday, September 26.

The Goodison derby will be Sunday, November 29 at 1.30pm.

Leeds, meanwhile, have revealed they have rejected offers from two unnamed Premier League clubs for Fabian Delph as well as approaches for Jermaine Beckford.

A host of top-flight clubs, including Arsenal, Everton and most recently Aston Villa, have been linked with £6million rated 19-year-old Delph.

The England Under-21 midfielder, who was voted Football League Young Player of the Year last term, is widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents on these shores.

Beckford, meanwhile, scored 34 goals for the Yorkshire club last season but was placed on the transfer list back in May having failed to agree new terms and with his contract set to expire next summer.

An official statement on Leeds United's website read: "Leeds United can confirm that we have received offers direct from two Premier League clubs for Fabian Delph.

"The offers have been rejected.

"It is not the club's usual policy to comment on speculation.

"However, in these circumstances we felt it appropriate to clarify the situation.

"Approaches have also been made in respect of Jermaine Beckford which have also been rejected."

LOUIS SAHA is hoping he finally gets the chance to forge a potentially lethal strike partnership with Yakubu next season - after their promising pairing was split up by injury.

The Everton duo started only six matches together before Yakubu's season-ending Achilles injury ended any prospect of the pair forming a potent strikeforce together.

But with the Nigerian back in pre-season training and vowing to be fit in time for the big kick-off - Saha is eagerly awaiting the start of the 2009/10 campaign.

The French striker, sporting orange hair this week at Everton's Scottish training camp near Edinburgh, said: "I think his (Yakubu's) strength and coolness in front of goal is perfect as a partner for any striker. I can't wait to have the Yak back."

But Saha was also keen to see Brazilian striker Jo's loan extension confirmed.

"Jo will be a very good signing if it happens. He looked good last season," he added.

Everton assistant manager, Steve Round, is also hoping an agreement can be reached with Manchester City.

"I am very much hoping a deal can be put in place. I think we saw last season what he is capable of," he said.

"Last season, the manager (David Moyes) was very keen on Jo and perhaps tried to sign him but was pipped at the post by Manchester City."

Last season's five-goal loan spell at Goodison saw Jo rejuvenated after a frustrating time at Eastlands.

Round added: "He came in as a young player to Manchester and struggled at first.

"The Premier League is different to anything else anywhere in the world. But he found his feet with us, came through and got us some goals.

"He's certainly a player we would like to have in our squad and firing.

"It's up to the club to try to finalise a deal. Hopefully that will come off and we'll have a very, very good player in our squad."

Everton have been linked with Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour, former club colleague of the Toffees' record signing Marouane Fellaini, but a suggested fee of £13million is deemed unrealistic.

Moyes is also interested in Sheffield United's young defender Kyle Naughton, but again the £6m asking price is beyond the Premier League club's valuation.

And the club has also overtaken last term's total of 23,220 season ticket sales, with the figure nearing 24,000 already.

Club captain Phil Neville, meanwhile, will miss playing against Cristiano Ronaldo.

While there will be plenty of top-flight defenders who will be glad to see the back of the brilliant former Manchester United star, Neville claims he enjoyed facing arguably the world's best player.

Neville said: "From an English football point of view I was gutted to see Cristiano Ronaldo leave.

"I think he brought a lot to the Premier League, everyone enjoyed playing against him, he is the best player in the world and he entertains people.

"We want the best players to be playing in the Premier League because we feel we play the best football and we have the best football product over here.

"Real Madrid are spending money but I still believe the Premier League is the best, the most exciting, the most honest, the most entertaining and we can be proud of that."

Leeds United, meanwhile, have expressed their disappointment at youngster Luke Garbutt's decision to leave the League One club in favour of Everton.

A statement on the clubs official website said: "Leeds United made the player an exceptional offer to join the club initially as a scholar and then as a professional player.

"We're disappointed that the player chose to join Everton.

"Leeds United are entitled to compensation and will also look into the circumstances surrounding his move."

Everton completed the small print and finally the signings of 22 year old Anton Peterlin, 17 year old Shkodran Mustafi, 16 year old Luke Garbutt and are in confirmed discussions over continuing striker 22 year old Jo's loan for another season.

The Luke Garbutt signing to the Everton academy from Leeds United came of something of a surprise although a welcome one in which EFC tries to restock the academy after a number of players were released at the start of the summer. Those departed are wished well, and those coming in now have to knuckle down and work hard.

Coupled the young signings now in with some of the names Everton under Moyes, and it is obvious that the informal transfer policy that the club have adopted is one of bringing in players in young on reduced fees - build them up and develop them - then put them in if they perform. Sell them on and generate revenue if they can't quite manage it. Moyes' record of looking for gold amongst the lower leagues is excellent, this is where the "ditherer" is has done the business for Evertonians and where no one can criticise. Recognition of talent is something Moyes was born with - it's the sort of thing that is born not manufactured. You can't learn it like a striker knows where to be in the box.

It appears that Everton are not willing to spend significant fees on players above the age of 23. This Moyes transfer strategy, isn't just sensible - it's building for the future and keeps the momentum of the club going forward.

Upon signing older players - you get immediate depreciation - or loss of value. This is "dead money", money the club cannot afford to lose and money other clubs have thrown away buying players who have peaked and who will struggle to maintain form. The phrase "going nowhere" applies to these players - unless you're Robbie Keane and then it's a London-to-Liverpool return please!

Speaking as a fan, not just analysing what Everton FC are doing - it is infuriating seeing the wasting of the fans' money on purchases like these - it's the fans generate the clubs' money! It's out of our pockets and here Moyes should be supported, he's done the right things in bringing in younger players like Baines, Gosling, Rodwell and a number of others.

When buying young you get the privilege of seeing David Moyes develop someone at The School of Science, like watching a boxer getting into shape for a world title fight. Jagielka - player of the season looked like he lacked confidence on initial arrival, was switched position, obviously trained in the gym to put on weight (muscle) and positively thrived in his position of centre back. International call up followed. Similar views - but in expressing technique for Joleon Lescott. Confidence given to him from David Moyes. When we buy young - we keep hold of our much needed money, we develop youth and inspire the fans. We also spread our risk. And gambling with the future of Everton Football Club is not something that should be encouraged, particularly after all the work of David Moyes to secure it and grow our future. That's not to say senior players like Neville or others have not got their place - they're the leaders, but they should never be brought in on significant fees. Never.

Buying players under the age of 23 is something David Moyes should be lauded for. He's the man who's keeping the club competitive by developing footballers at our place. We can keep hold of these players because we are growing on the football stage - but equally loyalty does still count in football. Look at Jack Rodwell. He knows just what David Moyes has done for him and continues to do, but equally appreciates the fact that "just to play for Everton is an honour". Attitude is all important its something a good manager keeps in check.

Money is going to be spent this summer by Everton FC. But when it is - it will be on players under the age of 23. Particularly on another winger / playmaker and/or someone who can come inside in midfield when needed. It's what we need. Other positions have also to be filled and we can be confident that if money is to be spent those too will be young with potential Moyes can get the most out of at Finch Farm.

When it does get spent - two of the players linked for midfield position, named (22 year old) Joao Moutinho - Sporting Lisbon and (21 year old) Stephen Defour - Standard Liege are both matching our criteria, and both have European/International experience. Both are safe (in the football sense) investments.

Other links like (19 year old) Fabian Delph - Leeds and (20 year old) Kyle Naughton both are the versatile and players Moyes alone can fully develop. They would also get opportunities they couldn't away from us. There are other links, and Moyes no doubt has a short list in case as happened last summer, clubs try and price us out or rivals try and hijack bids.

At every step it's about players that will grow at Everton and will long term take the club forward, coupled with the odd player that will come in to a specific job as Moyes has done before.

We can trust Moyes to bring the players in that are needed; the only thing stopping us is inflated prices and recklessness of other clubs. But everything is in place that is needed for a player to thrive at Everton if they seize their opportunity.

EVERTON have completed the signing of talented German teenager Shkodran Mustafi - much to the dismay of his club Hamburg.

The 17-year-old agreed a move in principal from the Bundesliga side in May, but the formalities have now been completed and the defender has signed a three-year deal and travelled with the senior squad to Scotland for a pre-season training camp.

"We really tried to keep Shkodran at our club, but when there is a club from England coming up we are unable and unwilling to compete financially," said Jens Todt, the head of Hamburg's youth academy.

"It is tough to accept, but it will not destroy us. We are just hoping this is not going to happen too often again."

But the player himself, who is a German Under-17 international centre-back, said: "It's a very nice feeling.

"It's one of my dreams to play for a Premier League club and that dream has come true for me.

"I had three good years at Hamburg but now this is a new chapter. It was a hard decision to leave home but it's another country, another language and I'm looking forward to it.

"I hope I have a good start and I can learn to improve on my weaknesses. Then I hope I can move through the reserves into the first team and get a chance to prove myself. I feel like I will get that chance here."

Everton will pay no transfer fee, but FIFA training compensation will be applicable.

Mustafi is a centre-half of Albanian descent and is expected to link up with Andy Holden's reserve squad once pre-season is completed.

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone, meanwhile, has confirmed that the Goodison club is negotiating for an extension of Manchester City striker Jo's loan, as reported in yesterday's Daily Post.

He said: "We've had a conversation with City over the options available and discussions will continue."

THE man who smashed the British transfer record as Everton chairman believes supporters can be excited about the club's transfer plans this summer.

Sir Philip Carter sanctioned a £2.2million outlay for Tony Cottee in 1988, when Everton beat off competition from Arsenal to sign the West Ham striker and top the previous British record of £2m when Paul Gascoigne left Newcastle for Tottenham.

Now Goodison life president, Carter says: "I think it's quite an exciting time. As a previous chairman, I always found it exciting when you were looking for new players that the manager had identified.

"When you secure them, you have a new element in your team.

"The work that goes on with the manager, the chairman, the chief executive and the board is quite considerable. The hard thing at the moment is the money that is needed to secure these transfers.

"It's difficult because you see that they are paying £80m for Ronaldo, so the prices are increasing for the top players, so what David Moyes has done in identifying players at an earlier level and spotting the potential is tremendous."

But Carter admitted it was easier to sign players during his first tenure as chairman from 1977 to 1991.

"From the point of view of what a player can now demand, they can make demands for things other than just their salary," he added. "From that point of view, going back 20 years it was a much simpler job in those days."

Everton are still waiting to bring in their first significant purchase of the summer, but teenage full-back Luke Garbutt completed his move from Leeds over the weekend - days after telling the world he was heading to Goodison on his Facebook website!

The promising 16-year-old defender has joined Everton's Youth Academy and was welcomed to Goodison on Friday.

The night before pals had posted Good Luck messages to the youngster on the social networking site.

One asked "You playing for Everton?" to which he replied, "yeye im off on fri."

Garbutt joined the latest batch of full time academy players at Everton on Friday.

Everton Academy director Ray Hall, said: "It's one of the highlights of the season. Every year you see the hopes and aspirations of the young players and their families.

"This is about the new group and hopefully we've got one or two players that the followers of Everton can be proud of.

"Some of the players that have been through this process are now world stars and household names. I just hope that some of these boys take the opportunity that's available to them," he said.

Joining Garbutt in completing their their induction for Everton were: Adam Cummins, Jake Bidwell, Connor Roberts, Luke Dobie, Tom Donegan, Zac Thompson, Ryan Watson, Femi Orenugu and Daniel Murphy.

Everton striker Yakubu, meanwhile, is confident he will be fit for the start of the season.

The Nigerian striker ruptured his Achilles against Tottenham in November last year and has since undergone a strict rehabilitation programme. But Yakubu has responded well to treatment and has set his sights on Everton's first Premier League clash against Arsenal as his return date.

The £11.25m signing is also hopeful to travel to America for Everton's pre-season preparations.

"I'm getting better and training every day with the physio who is so wonderful to me," he said at the opening of Everton's new store at Liverpool One on Friday.

"At the moment it is good and there is no reaction and hopefully I will join them in pre-season, which is good news. For almost eight months I haven't been playing football but at the moment it's great. I don't know but I think at the beginning of the season I'll be ready."

Yakubu, who was devastated to suffer a season-ending injury, was one of five injured strikers over the winter period last season.

That meant Tim Cahill had to step in to fill the void in the forward position, and Yakubu is full of praise for the way the entire side handled the situation.

"They did so well fighting for each other, which is good," added Yakubu.

"The spirit in the team is good and you have to give credit to the players.

"It's unbelievable to have a team with no normal strikers, doing so well finishing."

WHEN friendlies against Bury are being announced with a fanfare you know that things really are quite slow on the whole transfer front.

It can be argued that apart from a few very profile deals, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, very few Premier League clubs have done much business yet.

The perceived wisdom is that managers tend to enjoy a few weeks off in the sun and for the summer tournaments to end and then one key deal kicks off the so-called transfer merry-go-round.

At the moment, with most clubs keeping their powder dry, there's no way of knowing who might outbid you for any of your preferred targets.

Aston Villa and Tottenham are linked to almost every player that David Moyes fancies, while the minted Manchester clubs also have money to burn at the moment, and even they are said to be interested in, for instance, Kyle Naughton, the sort of young talent who Everton have picked up for a reasonable amount in recent seasons. As a result, Sheffield United are reported to want the bidding to start at a silly £6million.

The Everton manager has made it clear that he much prefers to deal early though, and many feel that the poor start to the last campaign was down to the inability to strengthen the squad and get players integrated during pre-season.

It doesn't help though when we seem to persist in pursuing individuals who appear very reluctant to move to Goodison Park.

Take Stephane M'Bia, for instance. Ross and Rachel on Friends managed to hook up more smoothly than Everton and the Cameroon midfielder.

He apparently messed Moyes about last summer, using his interest to get a better deal at Rennes, and now there are reports that he's using Everton as leverage in talks with Marseille, his preferred destination.

If he carries on making contradictory statements every other day he's in danger of becoming a Gwladys Street boo-boy before he's even signed - if in fact he ever does.

He would certainly have to perform well to convince Blues' supporters that he's not just a very cynical mercenary.

Another loan deal for Jo seems more realistic, and apart from reported interest from Fulham, there doesn't seem to be too many clubs wishing to compete with us for the lanky Brazilian. He divided opinion among Evertonians last season, scoring a handful of goals at Goodison but showing very little away from home.

Borrowing him again looks a far more sensible option than dishing out good money for someone who still needs to prove that he can cope with English football and put in a shift every week, not just when we are dominating poor teams at home.
