1. India has successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile today, which has a strike range of 350 km and is capable of carrying warheads of up to 1000 kg. The launch was part of a user trial by the Army.

2. The Central government is set to create an Equal Opportunity Commission as recommended by the Sachar Committee, Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan said today. The Equal Opportunity Commission draft was with the Union Cabinet and it would be made into a law soon. He also said the Jain community will be added to the list of national minority communities.

3. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014 was kicked off in New Delhi today with focus on engagement with the youth and discussions on healthcare. This year’s theme is “Engaging Diaspora: Connecting Across Generations” and this is the first time that the Youth PBD is being held on the first day of the event.

4. The Centre will soon appoint Justice B.S. Chauhan, a Judge of the Supreme Court, as Chairman of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal to take up pending applications. The tribunal has been without Chairman since April 2012, when Justice N.P. Singh resigned on health grounds. The tribunal gave its final award on February 5, 2007.

5. An RBI panel has suggested setting up of specialised banks to cater to low income households to ensure that all citizens have bank accounts by 2016 today which will pave way for significant changes in Indian banking structures. It also suggested that facility for withdrawal, payment and deposit should be set up within a 15-minutes walking distance anywhere in the country.
