Higante's Festival Angono

Higantes Festival, also known as the Feast of San Clemente, is celebrated every November 23 in the town of Angono, Rizal. This is a major festival in honor of San Clemente, the patron saint of fishermen. His image is carried by male devotees during a procession accompanied by "pahadores" (devotees dressed in colorful local costumes or fishermen's clothes, wearing wooden shoes and carrying boat paddles, fish nets, traps, etc.) and "higantes" (paper-mâché giants measuring 10-12 feet in height and 4-5 feet in diameter). This street event ends in a procession to Laguna de Bay until the image is brought back to its sanctuary.

The “higante” tradition began last century, when Angono was a Spanish hacienda. The hacienda owners concerned about costs prohibited all celebrations except for one annual fiesta. The townspeople concerned about enjoyment decided to make the best of a bad situation. Using an art form brought from Mexico by Spanish priests, they created larger-than-life caricatures of their Spanish landlords. In typical Filipino fashion, the fiesta become in equal parts, a stunning spectacle and a tricky inside joke. There too was a story that a French man happened to pass by this coastal town of Laguna de Bay as he cruised from Manila Bay. Captivated by the town being divided by a river, he predicted that someday giants would come out and become famous. True to his words, Angono can show off of two national artists - Carlos "Botong" Francisco in the field of visual arts and Professor Lucio D. San Pedro in the field of music. There are other Angono sons and daughters who are becoming big or giants on their chosen field of endeavor. Paper mache making is an art that is known back during the Spanish Era. The head of the giants is fashioned from a mold made of clay, which is dried under the heat of the sun.

With the advent of modernization and technology clay is changed to plaster of Paris and resin. The mold is then pasted with lots of newspapers then split into the middle and sun-dried, after which it is then pasted with the brown paper (the slit being covered) then sun-dried again and painted. The body is made of bamboo, but other materials like yantok (rattan) and thin iron bars can also be used. Yards are yards of clothing materials and accessories complete the costume of the "Higantes". Before, Angono town fiesta features a "Mag-anak" (family) Higantes consists of three figures, the father, the mother and the son. In 1987, Mr. Perdigon Vocalan visualized the idea of having a Higante Festival wherein all the barangays in Angono(13 of them) are to be represented by two to four Higantes symbolizing the industry or the personality of the barangay. This idea materialized with the funding given by the Dept. of Tourism and Provincial Tourism Office thus in a year after a seminar and a workshop in Higante Making , the fiesta was flooded with thirty-nine different Higantes. In that year too, there was a contest among the Higantes, thus one can see them a Higante with a duck on its head and another one a basketful of duck eggs representing a barangay that known for its fried itik and balut-making.

Angono lies to the east of Pasig City. Take the Angono-bound buses at the Shaw Boulevard terminal in Pasig. Travel time is 45 minutes but can stretch to over an hour, as traffic tends to be heavy.

Located in the nearby province of Rizal, Angono has always been known as a haven for artists. Renowned Filipino painters and sculptors like Nemiranda and Jose V. Blanco trace their roots to this town. A Street near the old church is, in fact, lined with the wall paintings of Carlos "Botong" Francisco, National Artist for Painting. There are also a number of galleries where one can view and purchase their work, as well as those made by their talented protégées.

A girl found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the girl decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The girl continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the girl, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!

Everything Happens For a Reason

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, they serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become.

You never know who these people may be; your Officemate, your neighbor, professor, long lost friend, lover or even a complete stranger who, when you lock eyes with them, you know that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you and at the time they seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would never have realized your potential, strength, will power of heart.

Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of good or bad luck. Illness, injury, love, lost moments or true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of the soul.

Without these small tests, if they be events, illnesses or relationships, life would be like a smooth paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet who affect your life and successes and downfalls you experience, they are the ones who create who you are. Even the bad experience can be learned from... Those lessons are the hardest and probably the most important ones.

If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart... forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart.

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because they are teaching you to love and opening your heart and eyes to things you would have never seen or felt without them.

Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen, let yourself fall in love, break free and set your sights high. You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it.

I wish you all the best in your endeavors as well as struggles in life. Have a fighting spirit and never hesitate to get back in the struggle!

There are times in our life that we have to make a decision. Here are some steps I hope that would help you in Decision Making process:

Step 1: Know you’re Choices – It is important to know the available choices for you to make a clear decision. This will help you recognize each choice and narrow down the problem.

Step 2: Study each Choice – It is important to gather information on each choice. Try to research on the internet, read some books, and ask some people that you think will give you some information.

Step 3: Who Benefits? – It is important to know if this choice benefits you or not. Who are the concerned? Is this a family decision or a company decision? Try to consult the concerns. This will allow the concerned party to give there insights that will help you in making the decision. But take note, don’t be influenced. You should be the one making decisions not them. Just take into consideration about there insights.

Step 5: Anticipate – Think about your next move. Like the game of chess you have to know what your next move is. What are the complications if you go for each choice?

Step 6: Analyze the complication – This will help you decide which alternative is better. Will it create more problems?

Step 7: Finalize your Decision – If you think you are ready to make a decision then go for it. If not, then go back to step 1.

There are so many decisions we have to make in this life. Decisions are the choices we have to made and the risks we take in our life. There is no perfect decision. Whether we make a right or wrong decision, what's important is that we learn from it and try correct them. After all we are the only one who can decide for ourselves, right?

Well, just received and email from one of my office mates about this well I just feel like sharing it with you guys... Maybe you have read this one but you can still check it out.

WHAT IS FAITH?

An Atheist Professor of Philosophy was speaking to... his Class on the Problem Science has with GOD, the ALMIGHTY. He asked one of his New Christian Students to stand and here is the conversation goes...

Professor: You are a Christian, aren't you, son ?
Student: Yes, sir.
Professor: So, you Believe in GOD ?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Professor: Is GOD Good ?
Student: Sure.
Professor: Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL ?
Student: Yes.
Professor: My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn't. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
(Student was silent )
Professor: You can't answer, can you ? Let's start again, Young Fella.Is GOD Good?
Student: Yes.
Professor: Is Satan good ?
Student: No.
Professor: Where does Satan come from ?
Student: From . . . GOD . . .
Professor: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this World?
Student: Yes.
Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn't it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.
Professor: So who created evil ?
(Student did not answer)
Professor: Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Professor: So, who Created them ?
(Student had no answer)
Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observe the World around you. Tell me, son . . . Have you ever Seen GOD?
Student: No, sir.
Professor: Tell us if you have ever Heard your GOD?
Student: No , sir.
Professor: Have you ever Felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Professor: Yet you still Believe in HIM?
Student: Yes.
Professor: According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my Faith.
Professor: Yes,Faith. And that is the Problem Science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?
Professor: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as Cold?
Professor: Yes.
Student: No, sir. There isn't.
(The Lecture Theater became very quiet with this turn of events )
Student: Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, Mega Heat, White Heat, a Little Heat or No Heat. But we don't have anything called Cold. We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as Cold.Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat. We cannot Measure Cold. Heat is Energy. Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.
(There was Pin-Drop Silence in the Lecture Theater )
Student: What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness?
Professor: Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness?
Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the Absence of Something, You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light . . . But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and its called Darkness, isn't it? In reality, Darkness isn't. If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you?
Professor: So what is the point you are making, Young Man ?
Student: Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed.
Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Student: Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality. You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a Good GOD and a Bad GOD. You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought. It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact that Death cannot exist as a Substantive Thing. Death is Not the Opposite of Life, it is just the Absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey?
Professor: If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shook his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument was going )
Student: Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and Cannot even prove that this Process is an On-Going Endeavor, Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir? Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?
(The Class was in Uproar )
Student: Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain?
(The Class broke out into Laughter )
Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain, Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . . No one appears to have done so. So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that You have No Brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust your Lectures, sir?
(The Room was Silent. The Professor stared at the Student, his face unfathomable)
Professor: I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son.
Student: That is it sir . . . Exactly !

Reflection...
We are often bound by our fear to commit mistakes, that we have acquired during those difficult times so to cover that fear with carefully planning our moves, that sometimes we forget to follow our dreams. We often think first before doing something, well if you ask me that is the right thing to do.

Sometimes I wish I was a child again, a child that is curious and wants to explore things out. That is what our thought of the day wants to say... Follow your heart and go with your instincts... this way we will be able to live our life to the fullest. With no regrets. As the saying goes..."Yesterday is past, Tomorrow is the future and Today is a gift that is why it is called the PRESENT" ... Have a great day... keep on smiling... :D

Thought of the day: Everything has a Reason...

Yes... as what I always say "Shit happens, and it happens to all best of us... and it happens for a reason".

I did recall a story from one of our recollection way back in high school. It was a story about a young man traveling in the desert when he reach a town at sunset and no one would let him come in and he was forced to stay outside the town under the tree. And when he was on the tree trying to make fire since it is a cold night a lion came so he was forced to climb up the tree with just a lamp in his hand and since his way up there a wind blown up and killed the fire in his lamp so he have no choice but to sleep up on the tree with no light at all. Before he fall as sleep he was asking why is this shit happening to him? The next day he woke up and found out that a group of bandits came into town and took all the precious belongings of the people in the town. Imagine if someone let him come in he will also be one of the person rubbed by the bandits, and if he has not gone up to the tree and the wind did not kill the fire on his lamp then he will also be spotted by the bandits and lost anything he has.

This is where the thought of the day comes in... Well as for me... I am not thankful that sometimes something is not happening as we plan it be and no matter how good is the plan, along the way bad things happen or doesn't go our way, however I still keep my faith in Him that this things happens for a reason and he has a better plan for us. It is like a blessing in disguise...

So what is the point in planning if it will not happen anyway? Well, that question is for you to answer. It is alright to sometimes let fate control our path but God give us freewill so we can make choices and decision.

So use your freewill wisely and God will do the rest, just keep the faith... Have a great day...

How to Find Happiness? We often ask our self about it. what really makes you happy? Is it hitting the bulls eye make you happy?

Happiness it is defined by Merriam - Webster Dictionary as a state of well-being and contentment. We usually laugh and cry sometimes when we are happy. We do all sorts of things just to be happy.

I remember a story I read in a newspaper clippings way back my elementary days. It is a story about a person that has a different way of seeing things. He is happy when he is hungry and he is sad when he is full. The article explained his different behavior. The reason why he is happy when he is hungry is because the next thing to that is he will be full and the reason why he is sad when he is full is because the next thing to that is he will be hungry. That made me think for a while and see the bottom line of it. Some people aim for something and thinks that it will make them happy. One example of this is when we set a goal for ourself, we often hit the goal and after that ask our self whats next?

As the years go by, we are we constantly hitting our goals. Then the question still pops up. "How to Find Happiness?". Let us go back to the definition of the word "Happiness" and I guess we can find the answer.

Yes! It is being contented on what we have now. Not looking at the past and worrying about the future. After all the best things in life are Free, right?

First Love (A Little Thing Called Love) (Thai: สิ่งเล็กเล็ก ที่เรียกว่า..รัก) (Sing leklek Tee reak wa... Rak), also known as Crazy Little Thing Called Love (in other Asian countries), is a 2010 Thai romantic-comedy drama film and also a 2011 Asian sleeper hit film starring Mario Maurer and Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul.

The story is centered on a plain-looking, dark-skinned school girl named P'Nam (Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul) who is secretly in love with an older Grade 10 guy named P'Shone (Mario Maurer). Shone is a photography enthusiast and a popular student in their school. However, he is often teased by some of his schoolmates because his father didn't score the penalty kick and made their province lose in a national football cup. But that doesn't change the fact that a lot of girls in their school are going crazy over him, including Nam. However, Nam is well aware that she is not the prettiest of the bunch, but she doesn't give up easily. With help from her close girl friends, Nam tries everything to make herself more beautiful and outstanding in school, hoping that Shone would like her someday.

My Review...

Well, as the tag line where it says "Based in the true story of everyone" ... almost every body goes through this kind of love story... I did say all of us but most of us have experienced this kind of love story one way or another way back in our high school days... Back to the movie it is kinda cute... it brings back my good old days when I met my first love but that was history... hehehe... One thing I have noticed the friends of Nam (Pimchanok Lerwisetpibol) almost did not change in looks they still look like way back in high school... However all in all I can say that the movie First Love (A Little Thing Called Love) is one of the best love story I have ever watch so far... kinda ideal just like a fairy tail story where it all ends up in a happy ever after but I guess that is all of us is dreaming of (Whatever)... And Guess what there are rumors that there would be a sequel, lets just wait and see...

The Movie Letters to Juliet is a 2010 American romantic comedy drama film starring Amanda Seyfried, Chris Egan, Vanessa Redgrave, Gael García Bernal, and Franco Nero. The film was released theatrically in North America and other countries on May 14, 2010. The idea for the film was inspired by the 2006 non-fiction book, "Letters to Juliet," by Lise Friedman and Ceil Friedman, which chronicles the phenomenon of letter writing to Shakespeare's most famous romantic heroine.

The story line is about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) a young American woman who works for The New Yorker as a fact checker. To put some spark in her life, she decides to go on a 'pre-honeymoon' with her chef fiancé Victor (Gael Garcia Bernal) to Verona. However the workaholic Victor is unmoved by the romance of Italy and utilises his time to rather do research for his soon-to-open restaurant, ignoring Sophie. The lonely Sophie discovers by chance an unanswered "letter to Juliet" by Claire in the 1950's -- one of thousands of missives left at the fictional lover's Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by the "secretaries of Juliet". She answers it and soon enough the now elderly Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) arrives in Verona with her handsome barrister grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan), who works for human rights. Charlie and Sophie take an instant liking to each other with Charlie behaving very brusquely with Sophie while she is very sarcastic with him. On the other hand, Claire is still looking to rediscover her long lost love, Lorenzo Bartolini. Sophie, thinking Claire's story might help her with her writing career, decides to help Claire in her quest. What happens next is a story of romantic twists and turns. They find out that there are multiple Lorenzo Bartolinis and must figure out which one is Claire's love. After many days of searching for the right one, they find that one of the Lorenzo Bartolinis is dead. An angry Charlie blames Sophie for his grandmother's sadness. He accuses her of not knowing what real loss is, which causes an upset Sophie to walk away. Claire, seeing the little dispute, tells Charlie that he was wrong and that Sophie's mother had walked away from her when she was a little girl. The next day, Claire insists that Charlie apologize to Sophie at breakfast, and he does. After dinner, Sophie goes out with Charlie and talks to him about love, when he accidentally kisses her. The next morning, is their last day of searching for Claire's long lost love. On a whim, Claire points out a vineyard to Charlie and asks if he could stop by so the three of them can have a farewell drink for Sophie. As Charlie drives down the road, Claire sees a young man who looks exactly like her Lorenzo. She yells at Charlie to stop, and he complies. They discover that the man is Lorenzo Bartolini's grandson. Claire and Lorenzo reunite after fifty long years.

Back in New York, Sophie breaks up with Victor. Sophie returns to Verona to attend Claire and Lorenzo's wedding. She finds Charlie there with another woman, Patricia, and runs out. Charlie comes to find her (in a classic balcony setting) and she admits she loves him, but tells him to go back to his date. Telling Sophie that the woman was actually his cousin Patricia, not his ex-girlfriend Patricia, he tells her he loves her and wants to be with her. He accidentally falls off the balcony and they kiss as he is lying on the ground.

The movie Love and Other Drugs (2010) features Maggie (Anne Hathaway) is an alluring free spirit who won't let anyone - or anything - tie her down. But she meets her match in Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie's evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love. Written by Twentieth Century Fox

The movie Love and Other Drugs (2010) is a good romantic love story. It is about Maggie having a stage 1 Parkinson's disease and Jamie a salesman competes in the cutthroat world of pharmaceuticals. They have stumbled on each other and that is where the story began...

Compared to a lot of romantic love story I have watched I can still say that the movie has a lot of similarity on a certain point not to mention the sex, well there is a lot of that in the movie as Maggie (Anne Hathaway) shows a lot of skin, I have enjoyed that though (hehehe). I am a fan of love stories and always believe in happy endings, although I have already seen part when I am still in the middle of the movie I told myself that I still have to finish the movie and see if it has something new to offer.

One thing I like in the movie is that thinking what would happen in the future. The relationship material here is good. but it is so good I found myself watching a climatic scene with Maggie (Anne Hathaway) and Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) talking in a parking lot, how Jamie needed her and Maggie says that she will be needing him more as much as he will be needing her in the future and he wants to go places but Jamie replies that he will carry her where she wanted to go... But there are laughs here, and there are more than a few sincere and insightful discussions of love and its consequences.

In conclusion I can say that the movie Love and Other Drugs (2010) is good and easy to swallow. And if you are looking for a movie to watch with a special someone and relax, I can recommend you this movie.

We sometimes look for a perfect person... when what we need is an imperfect person that would compensate our imperfectness. And yes I believe that there is no such thing as happy ending since this happen only in fairy tales, and love does not need to end since our love will only end when our heart stops, that only happen when we die. True love comes only once in a lifetime.
