mobylosangelesarchitecture:

ok, i might overuse the word ‘favorite’.
but i have a lot of favorites.
like, for example, this house/building/structure.
it’s, all things considered, my favorite place in l.a.
architecturally it’s pretty simple, like a humble little mission chapel.
but it’s history (and current use) is/are pretty amazing.
to wit:
it’s currently an l.a outpost of the international theosophical society:

and in it’s past it was a silent film theater, a directors club where orson welles staged plays, a little lecture hall where carl jung and aldous huxley spoke, and a meeting place for the krotona society:

now, as a theosophist building, it’s used for yoga and 12 step meetings and spiritual meetings and solstice events and neighborhood concerts etc etc.
it’s a humble little building and even though it’s architecturally very simple and basic it’s my favorite building in l.a.
last december 21st we were gathered in this little building for a solstice concert and it felt as if we were a million miles away from anything even tangentially urban.
but, of course, grimy hollywood is a 10 minute walk away.
so, from my perspective, this little building represents much of what makes l.a a really remarkable, special, hidden place.
and even though it won’t appear in any books on ‘great buildings of l.a’ it is, in my humble opinion, the greatest building in l.a.

Got into the bay area very late last night and was lucky enough to have a few late night minutes with a view of the bridge and the smell of eucalyptus from Cavallo Point. Opening the door this morning was an equally spectacular reminder of all of the best of Northern California.

When we did the 2011 Travel and Leisure design awards we chose the mixed use space on 1111 Lincoln Road as one of the best cultural spaces.

Gallery, Retail, bar and garage all in one the.I ended last night with cocktails at Juvia on the rooftop. Aside from the twice removed brush with fame (P-Diddy had left his credit card at our table) the space has a stunning view of the city and an unexpected drama.

The rooftop bar was like a miami interpretation of the famous LA Stahl house by Pierre Koenig on steriods. In fact it led me to reflect that there was nothing about Miami that wasn’t like a 10X version of LA. It’s so pumped up it cant possibly be good for you, but impossible not to love.

Taking to the street

Susan Feniger has a restaurant in LA called Street which curates all the best of the worlds street food, so when we saw a tour of Chinese Street food by her that was only blocks away we had to recreate it.

First course was a rice noodle, with egg, scallion and pork which a woman in line had to help us order. We sat stoop side along with everyone else and savored one of teh most unique rice noodle dishes I’ve tasted. Then on to fresh roasted pork which we ate while watching a local Quidditch match (more on that later.) and ended with Seseme pancakes and pork dumplings around the corner. the meal kept us on the move but I’m still full 6 hours later. And all in all it set us back about 9 dollars.
