Calloused

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.

Acts 28:27

Paul, the Israelite and former Pharisee, is quoting these verses from Isaiah 6 to his countrymen. He was confronted by Jesus and called to take the Gospel to the Gentiles, which Paul does effectively, just not very quickly. Even here in Acts 28 after all the events that he endured to get to Rome, he still begins with Jewish people and then makes them angry by saying that he’s taking this message to the Gentiles. The Jews, being God’s ‘chosen people’ often looked down at Gentiles, so to say that this message from God was going to the Gentiles because of the Jews’ ‘unworthiness’ did not sit well with them.

To quote Isaiah 6 about anybody would be very offensive! ‘You are hearing, but never understanding… You are seeing but never perceiving…’ Those words would sting a God-fearing Jew. The reason it’s true, however, is their calloused hearts. Calloused hearts are why they can hear and see, but not understand.

Callouses are good and very necessary when you’re playing a guitar. The hardness on the fingertips is needed to endure the strings and play that instrument. For the beginner, continuing through the pain of developing those callouses often is the difference whether or not they’ll play. Imagine this process on the heart. Pain is involved in a heart becoming hard, but it’s the emotional pain of life that does it. For the Jews it may have the sense of entitlement that caused them to, out of fear, look down on everybody else.

Being hurt by others can harden your heart. The irony is that people with calloused hearts often cause emotional pain in others, and the cycle continues. I have had people in my life whose hearts have turned calloused against me. The most frustrating thing about that is what Isaiah describes: along with their calloused heart comes ears that cannot hear me and eyes that no longer see me. The real me.

The only way to break this cycle is to take the emotional pain of life to Jesus. He is the one who can turn a ‘heart of stone’ back into flesh. He can keep me from becoming calloused myself. As I turn to Him, I can see with my eyes and hear with my ears, understand with my hearts… and turning to Jesus, He heals me.

Lord, thank You for this renewing power you have in my life. Your Gospel is powerful and freeing! Help me to live in that freedom by turning to You in all things. I live for You today.

What's Your Golden Calf?

So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Exodus 32:6

Aaron collected gold from the people who were clamoring for gods, since Moses was a long time coming down from the mountain of God. Aaron took the people's gold and formed an idol and said, 'Here are your gods." The people knew what to do. They worshiped and sacrificed to their golden calf then they sat down to eat and drink followed by sinful indulgence.

We're prone to do this too, so let's not think how crazy the Israelites were. We can become stir-crazy waiting on God. We are impatient. We take the things around us, things are not sinful in and of themselves, and we invest our heart, time and money into them. Our focus is removed from the Lord.

The natural progression of idol worship is seen here. We take what God has given and sacrifice for it. We eat and drink over it. We rise and indulge in any number of sinful practices that are an afront to our Holy God. I think the sinful indulgence comes because we've taken our eyes off of Jesus and are focused on that inanimate thing or activity. Eyes off of Christ will result in living in the flesh.

So what's your golden calf? What's mine? We will worship something or someone. Let's choose wisely.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the many fantastic gifts You have given me. Help me to never worship them but only You. I choose to fix my focus on You today. Receive my sacrifice of time and energy and heart's devotion. Thank you for the gift of repentance, forgiveness and eternal life! I live for You today.

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Acts 2:46-47

Every day the early church met together. Nobody told them to, they were drawn to it. When you experience the power of God and the resurrected Jesus, it draws you together. When you experience the sweet fellowship between believers, you want more of it regularly. These people were together, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people - even those who were not yet Christ-followers. It is this kind of environment that the Lord ‘added to their number daily those who were being saved.’

The environment of the church is important to reaching people for Jesus. It’s observable that expressions of the church have turned into human religiosity that is void of the power of God and the sweet fellowship described in Acts 2. Without these things no wonder that people are not being saved and added to the number of believers. The atmosphere of our gatherings must be sweet and filled with awesomeness. Every human being is drawn to that.

Lord Jesus, fill me with Your Spirit that my countenance and speech today will reflect You in every way. Thank you for the fellowship with others that you’ve blessed me with. May we welcome in many more - all for Your glory.

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Luke 23:46

When Jesus breathed His last, new life was breathed into this world. With such a simple statement the profound moment of people’s redemption took place.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

John 3:16-18

Jesus died a death He didn’t deserve so I could have a righteousness from God that I don’t deserve. Nothing in the Kingdom of Heaven I deserve. It’s all a demonstration of the love and grace of God.

What amazing love you have for us, God. Only you could have accomplished what you’ve given us in Jesus. I worship You today.

What!? There's No Marriage In Heaven?

34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.

Luke 20:34-36

There will be no marriage in Heaven. This can be troublesome for us because marriage is such an important part of life on Earth. It’s how the world goes ‘round! It’s the closest of all human relationships. It provides for us a sense of identity in our family. It provides for us security in an insecure world. It’s hard to think of existing apart from this most important of all human relationships.

If we think about marriage the way Paul did, we can be helped. In Ephesians 5 Paul teaches about marriage but then ends, “This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church” (vs 32). Marriage in intended to illustrate our relationship with Jesus. While marriage may be the most important human relationship, spiritually it points us to intimacy with Christ. In Heaven that relationship will be a reality in full! Our life with Jesus will be the source of our identity and security and marriage will no longer be needed to illustrate it. We will be God’s children, kids of the resurrection! On a practical level, procreation won’t be needed in Heaven, so neither will marriage. (As an aside, it blows my mind that God involves us in His creative process! We learn much about God and our relationship with Him through that as well, if we’re paying attention.)

We are able to pursue this relationship with God now. He can be… needs to be… the center of our existence. He has given us His great and precious promises (2 Peter 1), His Spirit and His Word! God can be the source of our identity and security now. If He is, our marriages will be better and we won’t blink an eye that there won’t be marriage in Heaven.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Lord Jesus, be the center of my life today. Thank you for the joy of considering Eternity with You!

Leaving Everything To Follow

16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Luke 18:16-17

There is a consistent theme in the Gospels when it comes to following Jesus. Those that follow leave everything behind in order to be a disciple. The leaving doesn’t seem to phase the disciples because Jesus’ invitation and the joy of following Him is more significant to them than what they’re leaving behind! In Mark 1 Jesus calls two sets of brothers to follow Him (vs 16-20). All four of these men were fishermen and they all left their nets, and their families, behind to become Jesus’ disciple. The nets represent a lot, don’t they? The nets were their livelihood and security; their way of life. They left it all for Jesus. They were embracing a new way of life and their security would come from another place.

This didn’t always happen. In Luke 18 there was a man who feared God, knew the Commandments and had followed them since childhood. He was legit and Mark includes that ‘Jesus loved him’ (10:21). Jesus extends the most amazing invitation to this rich young man. “Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Imagine being offered the chance to be Jesus’ disciple! To be with Him every day! The rich young man didn’t hear those words. The invitation wasn’t awesome to him because he could not/did not get past the ‘sell everything you have’ part. He went away sad because he had a lot of possessions.

The call to discipleship includes leaving everything else. Jesus becomes all consuming. He is ALL to us. In Luke 9:57-62 and again in Luke 14:25-33 Jesus speaks to the crowds about the ‘cost’ of following Him. (Read those passages!) He sums it up by saying, “In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.”

There’s a problem in the church when we try to follow Jesus without giving up anything. We want to keep what we have: our preferences, priorities, lifestyles - and attempt to follow Jesus. We want to add Jesus into our lives without leaving anything behind. We’re ‘dragging our nets’ as we’re following Christ, which just slows us down! We can’t keep up with Him. We must drop those ‘nets.’ The reason we give up our preferences, priorities and lifestyles is because Jesus changes all of those. It’s a new day with a new set of priorities and a new way of living! Often times it’s an addictive sin-filled lifestyle that we try to manage while following Jesus. Sin is to be crucified in us, not managed. Give it up. Leave it behind. Follow Jesus.

I think this is why children are commended by Jesus. The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these little ones because they don’t hesitate in running to Jesus.

Lord, thank You for the promise that for those who leave everything to follow You, much more will be given in this life and in the life to come. You are generous and provide every good thing for our enjoyment! Give me wisdom and insight to what is real and valuable. Allow me child-like faith today. I joyfully leave everything to follow You in this new life!

with you, evil people are not welcome.

 in your presence.

The bloodthirsty and deceitful

 you, LORD, detest.

Psalm 5:4-6

Jesus said, “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves.” (Luke 17:1-2)

There is wickedness and evil in this world. Sin is a reality. There are those who are arrogant, who lie, who have selfish ambition and pursue dishonest gain. The world needs a Savior! A Savior from what? Or more accurately, from Who? Romans 1 tells us that the wrath of God is coming against all of the ungodliness of the world. As the Psalmist wrote, God detests the sin of sinful people. We need a Savior from the wrath of God.

What’s crazy about the Good News is that the One we need saving from is the One who sends the Savior. His great love for us and His righteous judgment against sin are both demonstrated on the cross where Jesus died (Romans 5:8).

Jesus said that it is inevitable for people to stumble. Temptation and sin are to prevalent in this world. If this wasn’t the case… if there was the chance that a person could live stain free in this world, Jesus would not have come to be the Savior of the world. But He did come. Temptation comes, but woe to you, Jesus says, if it comes through you! If you are the reason another person stumbles and falls and sins against God, look out! There is trouble for you because of what God detests. “So watch yourselves!”

What’s required is for us to live with other people in mind. To be a servant and conscientious of the needs and weaknesses of those around us. We need to look beyond ourselves and discern the spiritual needs of others. Then not only are we not causing them to stumble, but we are a source of spiritual strength in their lives. This is what Jesus did! If I am going to wear His Name and follow Him, this is what I will be doing as well.

It’s a battle against the tide. It does not come easily or naturally… but it does come supernaturally! The One who is in me is greater than the one who is in the world! (1 John 4) As we do then we’ll sing with the Psalmist (Ps 5:11-12):

But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

Surely, LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

Live With Joy... Or Else!

The servant who knows the master's will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Luke 12:47-48

Knowing and doing the ‘Master’s will’ is practically the same thing, but not quite. Jesus tells us that there are those who can know His will and not do it. The imagery of a slave being beaten is the illustration. Punishment? Yes. Discipline? It seems more than that. If you know the Master’s will, much, MUCH more will be expected, even demanded, from you. If you’ve been entrusted with the truth of the Gospel, much, MUCH more is asked of you.

James wrote, “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly” (3:1). Dang it! (Oops, sorry.)

Those who do not know the Master’s will sometimes live as the Bible says, simply because of the divine spark that is resident in all of us. Most often, however, they do things that deserve punishment. Jesus says that these people will be ‘beaten with few blows.’ Somehow the punishment will be the same, but less severe. If you know the Master’s will and don’t do it… if you don’t get ready for Jesus’ return… if you live like hell and sin recreationally, look out! Jesus lays down the warning. It ought not to be true of you. You know that Jesus is Lord and that He is returning for you. Get ready.

Getting ready for Jesus’ return is the consistent message of the New Testament. He is coming back. Nobody knows when, but His disciples are to live a life of readiness for that event. For the times we blow it and sin, repentance and forgiveness is offered and we should do these things quickly! Keep your ‘list of things to repent of’ short!

Paul wrote, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval” (Romans 14:17-18). While the warning to be ready is clear, we don’t live the Christian life as slaves expecting a beating. What brings glory to Christ are these lives of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit! This is His will for us. We’d better do it… or else!

Thank You, Lord, that this new life You’ve given me is saturated with joy. I live for You today!

When Will You WANT To Deny Yourself?

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

Luke 9:23-24

We wait for the day when we will no longer want what our flesh wants. We think that if we grow spiritually the day will come when we will no longer desire what the flesh desires. That day will never come! As long as I am in the flesh I will desire what the flesh wants. Get over it. It’s true.

Then how will I win this battle between the flesh and the spirit (as Paul describes in Galatians 5:13-26)? How will I be formed in the image of Jesus? Here it is: When I WANT to be a disciple of Jesus.

There are days when I am a disciple, but don’t really want to be. On those days I’m coasting on yesterday’s walk with Christ. On those days I’m putting off the flesh, maybe, but only because of a sense of duty - not because I WANT to.

Jesus said, “Whoever WANTS to be my disciple…” Hang on a second. What would wanting to be His disciple look like? When I want something in life, I go after it. I order it, purchase it, make time for it… why? Because I want it. There are days that I don’t live like I WANT to be Jesus’ disciple. I just am His disciple. Not begrudgingly, but more because I know I need to be His disciple. I hear Jesus making this offer to follow Him, but only to those who want to. He never makes us follow.

Now, If I WANT to be His disciple, meaning that I’m going to go after it, make time for it, pursue it with some energy - that’s great. Jesus wants disciples who want to be His disciples. Later in Luke 9 Jesus turned away enough would-be disciples to show us that this isn’t for everybody. Some are just too engrossed in this world and others just can’t cut it. Some need to want it more!

If we do want to be Jesus’ disciple, here’s what He said would be our reality: we “must deny ourselves and take up our cross daily and follow Him” (verse 23). The only time we will WANT to deny our flesh is when we WANT to be Jesus’ disciple more. We will never arrive to the point of not desiring what our flesh desires. We will always want that, disciples just want Jesus more.

The cross is the destination for our flesh. It’s there that we crucify the sinfulness of our hearts and deny the clamoring of the flesh. Paul wrote, For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13). Notice the frequency… take up our cross daily! It’s great that you wanted Jesus yesterday… what about today?

Lord, I want to follow You today. I want it bad! Lead me to the cross.

Love Like You've Been Forgiven!

"Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. "Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"

Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven."

"You have judged correctly," Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little."

Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"

Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace.""

Luke 7:40-50

Knowing Won't Cut It

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Luke 6:46-49

Just knowing Who Jesus is won’t cut it in life. In fact, a person who knows about the Gospel and the Kingdom of Heaven can be more miserable than a person who has never heard. I’ve met many miserable Christians. I’ve been a miserable Christian! Knowing that Jesus is the Lord of all lords will be a horrible weight in your life if you don’t do what He says.

Knowing isn’t enough. Disciples are those who listen, learn and follow Jesus. We put His words into practice! We live them out. Paul told the Philippians to ‘work out your salvation with fear and trembling’ (Philippians 2:12-13). Hearing the Gospel is the commencement… the wonderful beginning! The abundant life in Christ is found in working it out in our lives.

Here in Luke 6 Jesus clearly makes the distinction of a strong, abundant life built on the foundation of Him and His teaching and the miserable life that is tossed around by the storms of life. The difference between having a weak or strong life is found in putting His words into practice. Hearing them isn’t enough. Knowing the truth isn’t enough. We must live out the truth of the Gospel. It’s in the living it out that the strong foundation is built.

Why would we call Him ‘Lord’ and not do what He says? We know that Jesus is Lord, but it’s the other side of the equation that our selfish, sinful selves struggle with. The New Testament is clear, we are ‘slaves of Christ.’ He is the Lord or Master. We are His servants. What slave calls his master ‘Lord’ and then doesn’t do what he commands? This is the question Jesus asks! “You know that I’m Lord, now live as My slave.” Ironically, it is in this ‘slavery’ that abundant life is found.

Lord Jesus, may I be known today as Your bond-servant. May I be found doing Your bidding! Lead me in the way everlasting and receive great glory through me… and thank You for this abundant life!

The Way Jesus Did Evangelism

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”

Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Luke 5:27-32

A few years ago a liberal denomination aired a series of television commercials that communicated their ‘open and affirming’ stance as a church. The commercial was effective by depicting other churches as being closed and exclusive. People of various lifestyles and circumstances were turned away from the front door of the church building. I was asked about this by a reporter from the local paper. My comment was that it is very true that Jesus receives us and accepts us just the way we are. We do not have to change our behavior to receive the love of Christ today. Where I was concerned and where the Tolerance Movement fails is in communicating that we will never need to change. The old adage is true, “Jesus loves us just the way we are and too much to let us stay that way!” When we come to Christ there is every expectation that our life will change, improving for the better. God’s agenda for every one of us is to recreate us into the image of His Son, Jesus. We all will experience change!

I wish I had been astute enough to reference today’s passage. Luke describes Jesus teaching to the masses, using the resources of some rough-living, tough-talking fishermen to teach about the Kingdom of Heaven. He then asks these hard-working men to go out into the deep for a catch of fish. Peter was gracious, explaining that they had fished all night (the right time to fish, not in the daylight!), but “because Jesus said so, he would.” These are words to live by, but that’s for another post! The awesome catch of fish makes Peter ask that Jesus leave him because he was a sinful man. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.”

With the calling of Levi and the party that Levi throws for Jesus as his house, we see Jesus’ method for ‘catching men.’ He is accused by the religious elite of being a ‘friend of sinners’ - guilty! Jesus more than speaks to these sinful people, He engages them, loves them, EATS with them! This was the utmost expression of fellowship and friendship in the first century, which is why the Pharisees posed the question, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Similar to the adulterous woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears (Luke 7:36-48) and the Pharisee wondered how, if Jesus were a Prophet from God, He wouldn’t know about her and allow her to do such an intimate thing - for the religious, holiness meant separation from sinful people. Jesus replied, “It is not the healthy that need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

The evangelism method of Jesus is to

Go to the spiritually sick and be with them

To love and express kindness to them

To call them to repentance

Jesus’ message and agenda was repentance for the sinner, but He went to them to deliver it. He did not expect them to change first. He loved them where they were. While the liberal denomination espousing the ‘tolerance movement’ may forget the call to repentance, the rest of us forget to Go to the ‘tax collectors and sinners!’ We want them to show up at our door. If we’re going to follow Jesus and ‘fish for men’ - we must go to their door! While we may be in the boat, we have to push off from shore and go to where the fish are.

It’s important for us to see HOW Jesus did this Kingdom mission work. He was relationally involved in those He was trying to reach. Let’s follow Jesus in this. Let’s not have any more ‘church softball leagues.’ Let’s go to the community rec center and join the bar league. Let’s not huddle in our churches multiple times each week… let’s go walk the Mall and meet our neighbors. Jesus said that we are the ‘salt of the earth’ and the ‘light of the world.’ Let’s live up to this high calling and love people to faith in Jesus.

Lord, thank you for loving me and calling me to repentance. You are awesome!

Yield To Temptation Or Yield To God

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Luke 4:1-3

Every human being has being tempted in common. Jesus included! (I wrote about how Prayer is our defense against temptation in this post.) It’s significant that Jesus was ‘full of the Holy Spirit.’ We often underestimate our need to be filled with God’s Spirit. We know we want to answer the enemy the way Jesus did, but to do so we must be as He was… filled with the Holy Spirit. Being able to stand up under the pressure and to quote Scripture during times of temptation are signs of being in the Spirit.

Satan attacked Jesus in these ways:

To fulfill a legitimate physical need in an illegitimate way

To be in awe of the power and splendor of this world instead of the Creator of this world

To test God’s faithfulness instead of trust in God’s faithfulness

Think of all the variations that these kind of temptations come to us. The devil is always scheming for our downfall, but we can live in a way that we are aware of his tactics. Paul wrote, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:10-11) That sounds like being filled with the Holy Spirit to me!

In our own strength and wisdom we will yield to the needs and wants of our flesh. We’ll be impressed with the stuff of this world. We’ll easily set up idols and give our devotion to them and not God. Let’s not live in our own strength and wisdom!

Thank you Lord for Your very Presence! Thank you for such grace that I can live in your strength and wisdom.

Ten Days

Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah[a] son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached 2 Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray to the LORD your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. 3 Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”

4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray to the LORD your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the LORD says and will keep nothing back from you.”

5 Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the LORD your God sends you to tell us. 6 Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the LORD our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the LORD our God.” (Jeremiah 42:1-6)

After the army officials asked Jeremiah to pray to the Lord for them, and Jeremiah agreed, they also added the promise to obey whatever the message back from the Lord was. It seems as though they didn’t have to say as much, but they did.

I don’t know what happened to the remnants desire to obey God, but something changed. Maybe it was the Ten Days of silence. The request was given and Jeremiah was praying, but God was not answering. Did their resolve change? They had said whether it was favorable or unfavorable, they would obey whatever God told them. Ten Days changed all that? Or maybe they just forgot. Maybe the Ten Days was enough time for them to look around at their circumstances and, in their fear, decide for themselves what would be the best next step.

Have you noticed that once you’ve decided a direction, hearing from God is much harder. When they made the request of Jeremiah, they were broken and unsure. Ten Days later they had new resolve. They had made their decision. They were going to Egypt and it was opposite of God’s direction. The arrogant men (43:2) said ‘You are lying’ to Jeremiah.

How many times have I done this? In the silence of the Ten Days I kind of figure things out - at least what makes sense to me at the time - and my waiting to hear from Heaven ends. Then the Holy Spirit does give direction and either it’s very difficult to change off the course I have set or I don’t want to, disregarding His leading altogether.

And what about obeying whether it’s favorable or unfavorable? The Remnant promised this, and it’s the right thing! All of us should obey whether God’s leading seems favorable or unfavorable. Why? Because God sees what we cannot see. Our obedience is trusting God. How it seems to us is secondary to doing what He has said. What the Remnant considered unfavorable would have actually saved their lives. What they considered better meant that they would die from sword, famine or plague. (I don’t know which one of those I’d choose over the others!) God loves us and He sees all things. We should obey for those reasons alone.

I seek You today, Father. Lead me in the way You’d have me go. And if it seems silent, I will wait the Ten Days to hear and be led by You. Thank You for Your Presence living inside me.

Saving You And Your Hearers

1 Timothy 4: 13-16
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Paul writes to Timothy to encourage him in his faith and ministry. Others had ‘shipwrecked their faith’ (1 Timothy 1:19-20) and Paul wanted Timothy to not do the same. Timothy’s faith and salvation was intertwined with his ministry. He was to follow Jesus as a good minister of the Gospel. So the instruction comes for Timothy to keep at it and be single-focused. Paul used phrases like ‘devote yourself’, ‘be diligent’, do not neglect your gift’, and then the exclamation point in verse 16: “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. “

Salvation will come to both Timothy and his hearers if he perseveres in watching his life and doctrine closely. Usually ministry and salvation are separated by people. The thought is that we are saved at some point and then nothing can touch that spiritual reality. Once saved, then you serve in order to save others. If you end up not serving so great, well - that’s how it goes sometimes.

The perspective that Paul had was different. Much different. He talked about, after preaching to others, not wanting to be disqualified himself (1 Corinthians 9:27). His ministry was intertwined with his own salvation. Paul’s words to Timothy close this loop. Timothy is to persevere - not give up - on watching his life and doctrine closely. If he did he would save both himself and his hearers.

I hear the call to perseverance, devotion and diligence! I’m a preacher with a few hearers. If my life and doctrine and preaching go bad, it will effect me and my salvation! And not just me. If I am disqualified for the prize, those listening will be negatively effective too. It’s not just about me... but it is about me.

The fact that my life is not my own nor does it impact just me is true of everybody. Every Christian has an audience that is impacted by their life and doctrine. As followers of Jesus, our lives, and the way we live them, matter.

Father, give me a singleness of heart and purpose today to be diligent in ministry and to persevere in my new life in Christ.

The LORD works out everything for his own ends—even the wicked for a day of disaster. The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil. (Proverbs 16:4-6)

Pride and sin go together. Wherever there is sin, pride can be found... and certainly where there is pride there is sin! A proud heart is sinful. A proud heart sets itself against God. It does not recognize God or His rightful place. If it did, that heart would not be proud.

James quotes Proverbs 3:34 when he wrote, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). A proud heart is in opposition to God and God is in opposition to a proud heart! Notice Proverbs 16:4-5 again. God works out everything for his own ends. He detests a proud heart. “Detests” is a strong word! Why does God detest ‘all the proud of heart?’ A proud heart has no need for God. It does not recognize Him nor give Him glory. It does not seek to know Him or be in relationship with Him. A proud heart is plagued with all kinds of sin. For these reasons, and a whole bunch more, I’m sure, the Lord God detests a proud heart.

If I’m running between the rails and see a freight train coming, do I lace up my shoes tighter and keep running? If that locomotive is barreling toward me, and I am running toward it, who should move? Who should yield? Duh.

A proud heart races toward God, thinking nothing is wrong and expecting God to adjust somehow to help him out in life. A proud heart thinks for God... believing certain things that God should or could do. God opposes the proud and He’s not changing course. We’d better yield! If we don’t, we can expect punishment (Proverbs 16:5).

What’s amazing about God is that He gives the proud heart the opportunity to yield. We can change course! ‘Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord a man avoids evil’ (vs 6). Even in this message of disaster, opposition and punishment, atonement for sin is offered. God does not want our destruction, He wants our redemption! He wants that proud heart turned to one that is soft toward Him. Redemption comes as we change and yield to God. He is right - always. His ways are right. His thinking and plans are right. We must be in awe of Him.

This awe, or ‘fear of the Lord,’ is what will help us avoid evil. Thinking about this Awesome One will keep our hearts pure and our lives righteous. Sin will be avoided! How can you sin when God is in view? You can’t! You won’t want to because He is so awesome. When we choose to sin we, in those moments, take our eyes off of God. He is not in view. We are not in awe. We either purposely or accidentally forget about God and Who He is. In those moments pride takes over and we do what our selfish flesh wants. We sin.

Humility is the answer for a proud heart. We look at our awesome God and we yield to Him. We fear Him. We get off the tracks and join Him in the direction He is heading. We worship - and sin is avoided. God gives grace to the humble.

Lord, there is none like You. I humble myself before You, thanking You for Your grace. Where would You lead me this day?

Lip Service

You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
<sup>9</sup> They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.’” (Matthew 15:7-9)

The disciples pointed out to Jesus what He already knew - the Pharisees didn't like being called hypocrites (vs 12). Jesus' response was what to do about them. Nothing. Blind guides will end up in a ditch along with those they are leading. Since they do not have the heart to listen and change, let them continue in their hypocrisy. The pain they are headed for will be lesson enough, both for them and their followers.

It's always about the heart for Jesus. Image in nothing, heart is everything! You can do the right thing with the wrong heart and, in the Kingdom of Heaven, it's the wrong thing. Lip service is reprehensible to God Almighty because He does not need our external actions to determine what's motivating us. He certainly does not need our words! And when our words do not line up with our hearts - that's a great definition of 'Lip Service!'

To the Glorious One our motivation to elevate ourselves is repulsive. It stinks. It can be smelled miles away and for miles around. Since God knows our hearts, lip service is based out of hypocrisy and pride. In Christ Jesus we are free to serve without talking about it. God sees our hearts.

For hearts that are far from God due to pride, worship is done in vain. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, James wrote. So how can the proud worship the One who is opposing them? The heart that is right before God is a humble heart. A contrite heart God will not toss out. He graces the humble heart and allows that person to approach Him in worship. He will receive the worship from a humble heart!

For those giving lip service, their teachings are 'rules taught by men.' Hypocrites love rules because they are able to be measured and give them control over others. A humble and free heart can extend grace and freedom to others, and in doing so reflect God. Perfection is found in Jesus, not in our accomplishments (or rule keeping). We are honest about our own failings and patient with the failings of others. This kind of heart can walk closely with God.

Thank You for the heart-check this morning. Grace me with the ability to speak less and give more... with the right heart... all for Your glory.

A Faint Spirit

I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy. I pour out my complaint before Him; before Him I tell my trouble. When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. (Psalm 142:1-3)

How common is having a 'faint spirit?' If King David was our only example, it would seem very common. Most would never admit to anything but being okay. A strong, resilient heart is the report I hear most often. So what's the matter with David? What a whiner. Emotionally fragile would describe him well. It's surprising that his words are included in the pages of Scripture. He's just so... weak. It's surprising that he ever became King. It's surprising that he was described as a man after God's own heart.

The King that David replaced was a strong heart. Saul was a leader and warrior with no visible signs of weakness. God removed his Kingdom from Saul and his family forever, giving it to David.

David was not so strong. He was often plagued with doubts and fears. His spirit was faint within him. What made David the greatest of all Israel's Kings was that he took those concerns and weaknesses to God, trusting God to guide and protect him. David trusted God to work out the details, and David gave Him praise.

David drew those 'mighty men' (1 Chronicles 11) around him because of his dependence on God. David was a leader who was led. He was a worshipper who took his faint heart to God and relied on God to provide. David prayed, "Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me" (Psalm 142:7)

Father, You know my way. You know where I've been better than anyone. You know where I am now. And, amazingly, You know where I am headed! Only You know these things! I bring my faint heart and failing spirit to You, trusting that You will be my strength. Lead me so that I can lead others, I pray.

Here’s the Lectio Divina post. Tuesday’s Reading: Matthew 26:17-30
They were very sad and began to say to Him one after the other, “Surely not I, Lord?” Then Judas the one who would betray Him said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “Yes it is you.” (Matthew 26:22, 25)
Judas had already agreed to ‘hand Jesus over’ (Matthew 26:14-16). The betrayal was done, except for carrying it out. Sin is often that way. We decide to do a certain thing and all that remains is carrying it out. This is why our thinking is so vitally important. Actions flow from our thoughts. Guard you thoughts! Bring them under the Lordship of Jesus. Your actions will follow...
Judas is in line with all of the other disciples and asks the same question, ‘Surely not I?’ Maybe it’s obligatory for him. Everybody else was doing it. Or maybe (and it seems likely) that Judas was oblivious that his actions were a betrayal. Jesus affirms, ‘Yes, it is you.’ Remove all doubt, Judas, it’s you. Even with these stark words that bring such clarity, Judas still carries out the betrayal.
The other disciples referred to Jesus as ‘Lord.’ It’s interesting that Judas substitutes ‘Lord’ for ‘Rabbi.’ Lord meant one with authority over you. Rabbi was your teacher. Your teacher would have great influence in your life, but not the authority that a Lord would have. YOU would give your Rabbi authority in your life. Your Lord needs no permission from you. This is how Judas was operating. He was making decisions. He was calling the shots. Jesus was not his Lord.
How often do I reduce Jesus to ‘Rabbi-status.’ I’m moving, shaking, leading, making decisions... and without the Lordship of Jesus directing those movements, sin is inevitable. The Spirit convicts and I say, ‘Surely not I, Rabbi?’
Yes, it is you.
Thank you, Lord, that failure is not fatal... unless I quit. Thank you for your grace that provides new mercies every morning. Lead me so I might lead others, all for Your glory.
