To make the cordage, you need to buff the bark off of the fibers. This can be easily be done by rolling the strand on you leg. The outer bark breaks and flakes off leaving you with the fibers remaining.

After buffing the fibers, you are ready to start creating the cordage. The basic twining method demonstrated here is called the reverse wrap method.

The reverse twist starts with kinking the strand in a half by twisting in a clockwise direction with you right hand. This forms a loop.

Next, you start your reverse rolling by grabbing the top stain and twisting it away from you or clockwise then grabbing the bottom string and wrap it counter clockwise until the bottom strand is on the top. The process continues until you have a rope.

You can make it longer cord by splicing in additional strands.
<!--
I made a really cool discovery in my backyard. I just found a plant called dogbane or indian hemp. It's great for making cordage. The dogbane can be identified by the deep red woody stalks and the slender pods that contain downy like seeds.

To prepare the Indian Hemp to make cordage.
First, crush the stem into four sections. Then, pull it apart into the four sections and line up flat. Pull the fibers back over index finder then break the woody stems into sections and remove from the fibers.

Once you get the long ribbon of fiber, the fibers need to be buffed. You buff them by rolling them on your leg. This will break away the red bark and leave you with the fibers
<!--

The Gardening Season has begun and this video shows you how to get it started cheaply. In this video, I show a practical piece of origami - Origami Newspaper Gardening Pot.

I saw some instructions on how to make Newspaper seed starter pots. Most of them show a pot with ugly rabbit ears and too big for seed starting trays.

My pot is the perfect size to start your vegetables in a tray and it's neater without the funny rabbit ears. Watch the video to see how...
<!--
Bullying has become a hot topic in our schools and community. That's why I want to tell you a little about our FAST C.A.T.S (Children's Assertiveness Training Series) program created by Bill Kipp and we are part of the FAST Defense network which was voted the Best Self Defense Program in the Industry by Black Belt Magazine.

We understand as teachers and administrators at school and parents at home that you can't keep your eye on your kids all of the time. These times are when your child is susceptible to bullying.

Our Bully Defense Seminars empowers your child to assertively communicate to bullies and handle situations on their own. Our seminars teach interactive scenarios to the students so that they communicate properly to the bullies.

If you're a parent worried about your child getting bullied at school or school, boy/ girl scout troup, or church group, please contact us at 215-249-3532 to find out more information.

Here's a little flash of our Bully Defense Seminar that we teach here at the school.
<!--

Here's my newest project/ experiment. It's called the beer can solar heater. I originally saw this project on a Facebook Fan Page on Homesteading. Most of them are big outdoor units and I didn't want to make the money commitment to make a large unit.
So, what I did was made a smaller, portable unit just to see how well it works before possibly expanding on it into a bigger unit.

The Beer Can Solar Heater uses beer or soda cans that are painted black and arranged in pillars that creates upward convection. These pillars are placed in a closed black manifold and a clear front for the sunlight to enter.

The results were pretty good. The temperature within the manifold gets to 110° to 130° F.
<!--
A Facebook friend of mine that owns a karate school showed this drill on his page. The drill looked cool so I taught it to my students.

The drill works on your timing and ensures that you're performing a proper side kick. You know how many students side kicks look like round kicks. Well, if the kicking shield flies to the side instead of back to your partner, you know that your performing the side kick incorrect.

It's a great drill and gives you valuable feedback.

One of our YouTube viewers had a question on what a child should do if they are lifted up in the air. When a kid is lifted up, we teach a bicycle kick. The idea is to hit the abductor in the groin. Another thing to keep in mind, along with the lower kicks we teach eye strikes with their hands at the same time they'd be shouting for help.

Did you ever have a headache at the end of the workday? Sometimes, it's easy to hang up the towel at the end of the work day and skip your workout because of these headaches. What would you say if I told you that the best cure for these headaches is exactly what you may be avoiding... EXERCISE.

I experienced this exact situation the other day. Everyone knows that I'm an avid exercise workout freak, but the other day, I had as serious headache and almost skipped my kickboxing workout. It reminded me of the end of day headaches, I'd experience at my former job sitting all day working for corporation.

These headaches can easily deter you from making it to your karate or kickboxing class, but before you do, listen to this. Sitting all day creates vascular constriction of the blood vessels in the brain that cause headaches. The best known cure is exercise which pumps blood to the brain and relieving you from the headache.

On this particular day, I knew the solution was exercise so I committed myself to taking class despite the headache. The results were a terrific workout and the headache was gone.

With the winter arriving, I wanted to create a off the grid project that could help heat my small office. This project cost less than $20 and was simple to put together. The candle heats the radiator metal core and transfers the heat to ceramic surface. Then this heat is stored and radiated into the room instead of it just rinsing to the ceiling.

Here's what you will need and watch the video for the assembly.
one 5″ ceramic (not glazed) pot
one 3″ ceramic (not glazed) pot
two 1 1/2″ x 1/4″ washers
three 1 1/4″ x 1/4″ washers
three 1″ x 1/4″ washers
eight 3/4″ x 1/4″ washers
seven 1/4″ nuts
one 3″ x 1/4″ bolt

Thanks for watching!

I signed up 6 years ago to YouTube to post videos for my students as tutorials. It was little rough at the beginning because we didn't have digital cameras which meant I had to transfer from a videotape to a digital format. it took me 10 months to post my first video. Then, after I posted my first video, My video camera broke. It took a year and a half before I was able to purchase my next camera ~ Flip Video Camera. With the popularity of some of my videos, I started producing more and I got accepted to the YouTube Partner program in June 2011. Then from there, the rest is history.

The Cinco Teros is considered an old form of Arnis. It's effectiveness is in it simplicity. Cinco Teros means five strikes because it consist of five angles of attack.

This drill is called 1, 2, 3, 4 Crash. The thrust strike at the end is the crash. This video shows some of our students performing the drill and getting a little overzealous with the crash.
