After seeing a news article today about a 20 year old mother who hit her 13 month old son to death and disposed of his body in a cemetery all because he wouldn’t stop crying and wouldn’t go to sleep I thought what can we do to prevent these horrific crimes against children? We’re seeing far too many of these news stories lately, the most prominent of course the Casey Anthony trial, and my sister the psych and sociology major is convinced it is the economic climate and that it is putting far too much stress on the mother. There was recently a report about women getting far less sleep than their counterparts because they are not only responsible for the home and children but they’re working full time jobs, they’re the breadwinners, they’re everything, resulting in less sleep because of the stress. Less sleep then causes aggravation, moodiness, and lack of tolerance and understanding. They’re quick to anger; they’re quick to react without thinking, only seeing red. What can we do to help; it takes a village to raise a child and even though this mother lives in Indiana I feel that the village reaches as far as New Mexico and we failed her.

If only we could monitor the state of the mother having a child from the very beginning. What are her circumstances, is she happy throughout her pregnancy, is she experiencing any hardships; financial or personally? Is she aware of the many programs out there to help with a dwindling income or with an abusive partner, does she know that if she cannot care for the child she can simply drop them off at a hospital and they will care for the child and find someone who can and is more than willing to do so.
But there are so many questions about where and when to start monitoring these women and probably the most important question is will it work?

I only read this article this morning but I’ve been brainstorming ever since because I don’t want to turn a blind eye any more, I don’t want a child being beaten to death to be a typical news story, we can do better, and we should. We should try and if it saves a child’s life then it was worth it. We need to start on the lowest levels, we need to start asking our friends and coworkers, How are you doing and truly care about the answer, we shouldn’t be anticipating a fine we should be probing for more, yes we may come across as nosy or not minding our own but these children are our own they are the future of this country and I want them all to be happy and safe in their homes and I know you all do too. It’s time to start protecting them and we start with their mamas. We need to ask the neighbor across the street how the new baby is, are you getting rest, do you need help, and what can I do for you? Oh I know I’m talking about taking time out of your busy schedules to help someone else but that’s what we should be doing. What’s one more mouth at the table, what’s a couple of diapers, what’s just sitting and holding a baby for a mom that’s tired and just needs a few hours to herself, it’s nothing when it comes to the safety and happiness of a baby. Plus in the process we will be showing our own children that giving back should be a way of life, a part of our daily routine. We need to start caring about each other; this really is a small world and realizing that helping one helps so many more. We need to start a network of moms helping other moms. We are not alone in raising our kids and sometimes a new mom just needs to hear that.

We could start in hospitals, with OBGYNs, with midwifes, let’s start asking the hard questions, let’s starting asking a mama not just how she’s feeling physically but emotionally. Maybe along with seeing an OBGYN or midwife expecting mothers need to see a psychologist as a standard to help them become aware of some of the obstacles they may find as new mothers. There is a reality, there is a lack of sleep, there is exhaustion never before felt, there is a change in self that some may find hard to accept, especially young mothers.

The time is now, to beat this changing atmosphere of mamas killing their children. We need to start with the mothers to protect our nations little ones.

No I have not fallen off the face of the earth, no I have not gone into witness protection, and no I have not become a CIA spy and changed my identity, I have simply become the human equivalent of a sloth or the act of being a sloth, whatever that word is.

I have not been blogging, I have not been keeping up with Weight Watchers, I have not done a single thing to the house, and I have become the most distracted parent ever. There really isn't anything to blame expect that when it's the end of summer I feel this need to greet hibernation mode full on.

But now that we have made it to the fist day of fall, I'm so ready to begin again, to take this seasonal change and make it an internal change. My gears need to be switched and the Autumnal Equinox has helped with that. Today was a wonderful day, it just felt good, it felt fresh and I felt like I was 18 again and everything was brand new and that I could conquer any task set before me.

Now with that, here's to my Renewal, my Autumn period has begun. Ideas are abound!

Our First Paint Job - Success!

I know it's been a while since I last posted but I have good reason, I wanted the living room to be as put together as possible so I could provide a whole slew of pictures and with that let the show begin!

I love how Ektorp and his chubby little friend pop with the green (Mother Nature from Behr). There's my Maria Tortilla to the left, she loves that I put her books in a basket.

I love the way the white, dark wood, and green all play off each other. I'm trying to find a spot for my birdcage but for now it'll sit on the floor. I do have a couple of little birdies sitting around the room so I figured the birdcage would finish the theme.

My brother gave me this artwork years ago but I never got around to hanging it until I discovered the Hercules hook. They are awesome and now my picture looks beautiful against the green walls!

I still need to work on my shelves but I did use the white IKEA frames my mom gave me and they really pop. I'm thinking about replacing all the frames with white ones or just spray painting the ones I have.

We tried to do all the cutting in ourselves but we screwed it up so we paid a guy to come do it for us, he had a taller ladder and he was a pro and for 80 bucks it was worth not falling! I do plan on turning the fan blades to the darker side to match the rest of the furniture.

She loves this little nook! Okay back to the living room; I can see where we need to do some touch ups on this section of the wall. We used a can and a half of paint and used the second can for touch ups but we missed a few as you can tell. It's funny you can only see it with the flash of the camera.

The Before Pics:

Pretty blah huh, too plain for me and after living in the house for over 3 years I needed a change.

The dark wood worked okay with the light walls but the stars of the room did not, the couch and chair just didn't pop the way I wanted them to.

We had to tackle some wall repair before we started painting, which was fairly easy with some textured patches from Home Depot.

With curved walls it was hard to determine where to stop. We decided to paint the curve and it turned out great!!

The Screw Ups!!

This is what happens when you get roller happy at 2 in the morning! (Our outlets are vertical, just didn't rotate the picture)

Problems: the tape pulled the paint, which means we probably didn't let it dry completely and we suck at cutting in!

We forgot to put the tape in this area and just went for it and well you know how the story ends. (didn't rotate pic) Everything has been fixed by a professional!

So there you have it, the After, Before, and the middle (This will probably be how my first book goes too... lol)

So there are still a few things to do:

Get curtains (white)
Paint frames white that will go on the shelves for a pop effect
Get an area rug for the center of the room right in front my Ektorp
Add green and white accents around the room
Clean up desk behind couch. We really just need a filing cabinet.
Get a shelf with doors to hide all our DVDs, games, etc. (Right now they're in a bin behind Ektorp.

Next is the dining room and kitchen, but we're gonna have the same guy, who came out to do the edging, do these rooms for us. For a 150 bucks and we buy the paint, sounds pretty good to me!!

So there's our first paint job, Riley and I rocked it with a few bumps in the road.

Bringing the Outdoors In

Since we bought Ektorp and his little chubby sidekick I've been wanting to completely revamp the living room, so the first place I looked was a little ol' blog called Young House Love. They have this section called mood boards and they are so fun and uber inspirational. In fact I found a mood board featuring Ektorp and his chubby pal and it's exactly the direction I needed.

It's a great color combo right! I love how earthy it looks and I heard once "Whatever works in nature, will work in your home."

So today my mom was looking through her Martha Stewart living magazines and I think we found the perfect green. It's called beach grass. It's the green furthest to the right.

So what do you think?

Ode to IKEA

IKEA how I love thee, your furniture so crisp and clean,

Your Swedish fare delicious and showroom lighting fixtures all abeam.

You had me at gravy covered meatballs for 1.99,

I didn’t share, not even with my child, because they were all mine.

Your catalogue is now a permanent fixture in my home,

Come next year my IKEA collection will have grown.

White couch, no problem; just throw it in the wash,

Coming out bright and white will have me proclaiming OH MY GOSH!

My love for you only grows as we are so far apart,

Don’t judge me!

IKEA is quite the experience and opening weekend just adds to that experience. We got there an hour early, lined up at the elevator to take us to the café, we needed to power up before we power shopped, we had delicious Swedish meatballs, with mashed potatoes, gravy and even a little bit of breakfast foods. And as soon as 10:00 came around we were ready to go. We hit the showroom floor and were in awe the entire time, well maybe I was more in awe than Riley or Maria were but I must stop here and acknowledge how great they both were, Maria was strapped in her stroller and Riley pushed her the entire time, they just followed me all the around the place. When we got to the couches I was so happy because that’s the reason we were there to buy our couch, our anniversary gift to each other. So Riley sees the couch and he immediately sits down and the look on his face was pure terror for me. He looked uncomfortable, and just not happy at all and then when he saw the terrorized look on my face he got a big smile and said just kidding I love it and then I proceeded to punch him. He said it was so comfortable and that he really liked the white, then he told me to try the chair out, but we’re not here for a chair, well just try it and I did and I fell in love and he saw it. So we wrote down all the info we needed to pick up the couch and proceeded to shop, well I had filled up a huge IKEA bag with tons of stuff and when we got to the dining tables and chairs Riley said he needed a break so we sat down and reevaluated our purchase and that’s when Riley said do you want all this other stuff or the chair and I immediately said the chair, so we finished up looking around and headed to checkout. We bought the couch and the chair and are so freaking happy with both, seriously we are in love and the couches are loving us back, they don’t want to let go, and when we get up they’re so sad and they call us back to them and then we sit and they envelop us in comfort. Even Maria is in love with them, I caught her talking on her little calculator turned phone and she said the cutest thing while pushing her little grocery cart and tilting her head as if to hold the phone with her shoulder “Oh yeah and the couch is so purty and the chair too!” It was so adorable and it made me laugh so much. She’s all about the chair, she has claimed it and we’re not allowed to sit in it, I like to call it her throne. So there you have it, we are officially fans of IKEA furniture and will definitely be buying more, which means more trips to Denver or jut biting the bullet and paying the shipping charges.

400 miles for Ektorp

Yup that’s right I’m gonna travel to Tempe, AZ or Centennial, CO for an IKEA sofa. I have just fallen in love, deeply; seriously, I wanna have its baby, in love with this couch. You see the other day I was looking at a blog called Little Miss Momma and I saw her cute little living room, well there it was, a cute little, comfy, white love seat and I thought I must meet her older brother. So after reading that the reason Ashley can have a white couch and a toddler in the same household (unheard of) is because ALL THE FABRIC IS MACHINE WASHABLE, I was sold. I jumped on IKEA and there it was and it's been nothing but passion since our first online encounter. His name is Ektorp, cute huh, he’s Swedish.

So anyway he’s only 399 bucks but here comes the distressing news, shipping is 349 bucks. I love Ektorp but I can’t spend that much on shipping I might as well get another one just like him, two is better than one (this blog post is going nowhere but south, stop reading now if you’re already weirded out by my personification of a sofa).

So I announced to my hubby that we’re taking a trip to the closest IKEA to meet my online lover, Ektorp. I visit him online at least once a day, I read the instructions on how to put him together, and I read how to wash him when he’s dirty (oh boy!) So instead of paying 349 bucks for shipping I’m gonna go down there and pick him up myself and maybe a couple of his friends (wowza!).

Oh IKEA please come to New Mexico, there are tons of women out here looking for exactly what you can provide… beautiful home furnishing duh…. what were you thinking?

No, not my hair, a dingy old jacket that I never wore unless I was staying home, cleaning, or working out, but now I can wear it to work... and I did!

So first I have to say thank you to Nina at Momma Go Round for inspiring me here!

So I basically followed the directions on the Rit box, so no special tutorial, just read the box and you're golden!

The lighting is bad which isn't helping it's case, but even in the greatest light it sucked.

This outfit isn't flattering and I probably won't wear it again but I was comfortable

It's really comfy and I love how the white threading stayed white while the rest turned bright yellow

So don't be afraid to try this at home. It totally worked and I'm beyond happy with the results!

P.S. I promise I've lost almost 25 pounds, I know it doesn't look like it in these pictures but seriously I have!!

Adventure: Swimming

Ahh it's finally Friday and I'm so ready for the weekend. It's gonna be full of swimming. We have not once gone swimming this summer and Maria has never been in a pool, well because both her folks are a couple of fatties and well we just don't desire to share with the world our rolls, our eyes only you see. Well we finally decided we can't just hide away and keep Maria from the pool because of our issues, so the hunt was on for some swim wear. Well Riley was easy, he just needs swim trunks and he's good to go, I on the other hand needed everything to be hidden, tucked in tight and not so rolly. Well off I went to Wal-Mart, surely they would have a bathing suit to cater to the larger woman, well lo and behold they had board shorts for plus size gals like me (note to self, try them on before leaving the store, not the night before you're planning a swimming trip, they're a little snug and will do but I'm off first thing in the morn for a size bigger, just to smooth things out a bit, BTW can a parentheses statement be a paragraph long?). Anyway, the shorts are super cute but there were no tops to be found so I gathered up the baby, grabbed my madre and padre and we made a trip to fashion bug, a big girl's best friend, and there it was the perfect top, it matches the board shorts and it actually looks cute on me. Now I'm all set to strut my largeness to the pool tomorrow with my beautiful baby in tow and my cute hubby. We'll look like the All American family, happy and fat!! LOL :)

Tuesdays should be the First Day of the Week!

Well it was the first day back to work since Friday, holy crap it was hard to get back to work. The morning was running pretty smoothly until I get to Maria's school and she's outta wipes and I see a text from Riley letting me know I left my badge at home, so it was another 20 miles of driving that I just didn't need this morning...ugh! So I finally get to work and I have about seven papers to proofread, edit, and post but what was really nice about being so busy was that before I knew it it was 12:20, time for lunch and then when I looked at the clock again it was 4:00, thank goodness for a full plate at work...finally!

So nothing really eventful happened today except that I can't get my Maria Tortilla into any swim classes that will fit our schedule. I have one possibility but that'll mean taking off from work early and racing around town...hmm I'm weighing the options.

Oh wait, there was something pretty eventful, our justice system let down a 2 year old murder victim. That's right the murderer was free to go with time served for lying to police. So sad how things turned out and so wrong. The prosecutors had too many theories, they should have stuck to one and they should have had the death penalty off the table, life in prison would suffice, but that's not how it went down. Along with all the other sickos in this world we have another one wondering the streets again.

Well it's a short week and I can't wait for the weekend, we need some family down time, a nice dinner around the table, a family friendly movie and possibly a trip to the swimming pool. Oh week please speed up your arrival, don't make us wait another 3 whole days, oh wait it's only 3 days okay I think I can make it, I think I can, I think I can. (ooh I need to get that book for Maria!)

Remember our attitude is everything and I discovered first hand how changing mine can feel pretty good and just make things a whole lot easier.

Holy Crapola, it's freaking July already, where did the time go, where did June go, where did May go for that matter.

Okay projects for this month:

Use the Yellow Rit dye I bought last night to make a plain old white cardi seem new again
Finally buckle down and paint the mirror my MIL bought for Maria's room
Grow a pair and venture into the realm of wood working, I'm dying to make the Pottery Barn table I've been drooling over for forever
Bring out the sewing machine, find the pedal and attempt to make Maria a dress for Summer, this summer, not next!
Finish the garage
Declutter the house

So I think that's enough for the rest of the year, not just this month right, ugh I'm so lazy, I promise one of these things will get done this month, ONE OF THEM!!

Debt Reduction Hits the Skids!

Okay debt reduction is really hard!! We have two vehicles, a house, and student loans and while it would be absolutely freaking awesome to be all paid off in less than ten years well, we would be limited on a lot of things we could do till then, right, or not? I used my credit card and I swore I wouldn’t but I did, which means I’m pushing back the debt reduction adventure again. I need help, not mental but motivational.

Who’s done it, who’s doing it, who’s making the debt free life work and how?

Recommitting to Myself

Everyone needs a fresh start, we all get tired of the routine but sometimes instead of just setting it aside for a while or quitting all together, we just need to recommit. No I'm not talking about a relationship, although this isn't bad advice for that either, but what I'm talking about is recommitting to my healthy lifestyle change.

While cleaning the garage this weekend I found my old weight watchers weight tracker. I was afraid to look at it because I didn't want to know how much I had gained since I had quit, but I bit the bullet and I was really glad I did. I saw that I was 39 pounds less than I was when I started this time around and I saw that it took me 36 weeks to reach the 25 pound marker and this time it's gonna take me 16 weeks. I realize it may be coming off faster because I'm heavier but I would like to think that my efforts are doubled this time around.

Seeing the old weight tracker made me realize how much better the plan is and also how much better I'm doing on it this time. I'm more determined, I'm older, and I'm not just doing it for myself but also for my little girl. I want her to see an example of a healthy woman.

Here's to recommitting!

Financial Freedom

Well I had my annual review at work today and I would say it went really well considering I had been warned about my Internet usage. I should be getting a little raise, better than nothing for sure. Right now my focus lately has really been on finances. I see this extreme couponing, I see all these blogs about being frugal and it's totally inspiring, hence the debt reduction adventure I'm on.

Based on the debt reduction calculator I CAN have the cars, house, and my student loans all paid off by 2019, can you imagine having all that off your plate in 8 years... so freaking cool!

So I'm hoping the little jump in my pay will help with my debt reduction agenda.

So how do you save money, what are your financial goals?

So Nana Mary is doing much better. She has a pace maker, the docs are doing a blood transfusion today and she will probably go home before the week is through, I hope! Thank you all for the prayers!

Maria is getting big; right now she’s going through a growth spurt. The other night her legs were achy so I massaged them till she went back to sleep, remember those growing pains, they suck! She’s also putting away a ton of food, this girl is eating more than I’ve ever seen her eat, I’m glad too she’s a skinny minny. She’s in this mama only stage. Mama do it, I want my mama, she tells everyone I’m her mama; even strangers, and mama will you hold me! I love it but I also feel bad for my hubby because she won’t let him do anything, ugh girls they’re so fickle! Her hair is getting a little longer too, yippee maybe I’ll be able to do more with it than just pigtails…maybe. She loves school, they’re doing a lot of great things this summer, including yoga, can you just see a bunch of little 2 year olds DOING YOGA, how adorable!!

Riley is great, he’s busy at work but he still has time to take my calls or answer text messages, thank goodness too, I hate when I can’t reach him because I’m one of these that needs to run everything by him, good and bad! His hours still suck but we’re making it work. I need to stop waiting up for him; it’s killing me here at work.

Speaking of work, I was told I need to curb my internet usage, so that’s why I’m not on my blog so much. Totally sucks, I wish blogging was my full time job! Yes that’s only a wish I couldn’t actually do something like that because um, we have a house, two car payments and student loans. Although I hope to have those 4 monkeys off my back in 8-10 years.

I found, well my friend Stephanie found, this great debt reduction calculator and it really helps you see the possibility of paying things off early. If you want it email me and I’ll send it to you.

I’ve given up on my grass. It’s a losing battle, Tommy keeps digging in it to get cool on these hot Albuquerque days, so here’s to my efforts and here’s to new back yard plans!

Nana Mary

My Nana Mary was taken my ambulance to the hospital last night. Her heart beat dropped to 20 beats per minute, they lost her in the ambulance at one point and then brought her back, they immediately determined that she needed a pace-maker so as they were wheeling her into surgery they lost her again and again she came back. The surgery was successful and she is now in recovery. Please pray for my Nana, she is 79 years old and she still has so many more years to live.

Daddy Doughnuts Day

Friday was Daddy Doughnuts Day at Maria's school and this was a HUGE deal for her. She kept asking about it all week and every time we told her "it's not today baby it's Friday," she cried. She was really looking forward to her special time with daddy and so the day finally came.

The went t her school at 11:00 and had doughnuts and gave gifts here is the special gift she gave to her daddy (she even made one for her tata (my dad)).

Is that the cutest little card you've ever seen, so sweet and her daddy just gushed over it, and she was so proud of herself and he was proud of her because she ate the whole doughnut at school!! AWESOME!!

So I've been tracking all my food on my weigh watchers log but I have to admit I'm about 14 points over for the week and weigh in is tomorrow. I have 9 points left for today because I made Riley a HUGE and early father's day breakfast. So I need to find a way to eat healthy and still have a sense of satisfaction without going over my 9 measly points... any ideas, well just as I wrote that I thought of one, I'll be munching on fruits and veggies all day until dinner time, I hope that'll help.

Well today has been a pretty busy tidy up the household day, I got up with Maria at 7:30, sorted our massive pile of dirty laundry, washed the whites, washed the dishes, made breakfast for the "Man of the house," washed Maria's first load of laundry, washed another load of dishes, washed Maria's second load of clothes, put Maria down for a nap and now I'm sitting and relaxing WITHOUT my cup of coffee. Yeah the coffee I bought sucks, I thought hey I'll try the Walmart brand of the classic roast, well that was a HUGE mistake...it SUCKS, it smells bad, and it tastes bad, back to Folgers it is.

So I know I've been missing since Tuesday but I'm back, really and truly. I do think I need to schedule my blog posts instead of how random I've been. How about a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday schedule...eh I'll mull it over.

Oh and I gave Riley his father's day gift early and he so freaking loved it!!

So I went three points over my points plus allowance yesterday, so that means I need to get my exercise ramped up for this week.

Here's the reason I went over:

Tacos, it's what my mom made, so that's what's for dinner!

I was very proud of myself though, I measured out the mixture of meat and potatoes and I also measured the cheese.

What really did me in was the chips and salsa laid out on the table before the meal was served. I counted out 6 chips and ate them but I shouldn't have had them at all. Hindsight is 20/20.

So that was yesterday and today I get to start over and so far I'm doing pretty awesome. I'm learning that Breakfast and lunch are easy, it's dinner that kicks my butt so I need to start saving my points or just making better choices come supper.

Come Monday I always feel like I get a fresh start, especially when it comes to my healthy lifestyle change.

Sunday was weigh in day and I knew going in it wasn't going to be a good one, and sure enough it wasn't. I gained 1.2 pounds back, but I brushed it off and resolved to start again come Monday.

The reason I did so poorly this week is because, to be completely honest, I didn't log a single thing, no food, didn't exercise, nothing, I was a lazy bag of bones last week and it didn't help that I had a sick little girl all week, but no excuses, it's time to get back on track.

So to keep myself accountable I will be sharing my food logs with you all, this not only will keep me logging all my food but it will keep me within my points allowance.

I'm not sure what I'm having for dinner yet but as soon as I do, I'll let you know!

Pee Pee Phone

I was in a rush to get to the potty, I really needed to pee, did my business, pulled up my pants and plop went my 1 month old Droid X, right before I got to flush. I pulled the phone out and only wanting to remove the pee from my hand and phone I ran it under water, I figured that had to be better than pee well it made it worse. My phone, my phone, my phone has died a pee pee death!

It is now sitting in a bowl full of rice, hoping it'll dry it out and it'll once be my pride and joy, well you know what I mean my dear sweet child is my pride and joy but my droid, my droid is a close second.... JUST KIDDING, but I do love it!!
