Overall, the Oscars were, per usual, a bit of a snooze fest. Aside from the actor montages, I was mainly looking forward to re-seeing a few red carpet fashions. Angelina Jolie wowed in basic black, Gwyneth Paltrow in all white Tom Ford, cape, and minimal jewelry was a classic beauty, and Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture was fashion forward and daring in a love-or-hate look. But my number ones of the night stunned in all three: dress, makeup and hair but especially in their category listed below…

BEST DRESSED:

Pixie perfection. Michelle Williams looked absolutely stunning in this coral Louis Vuitton number. The peplum shape, layered detailing, and simply sweet accent of a little bow made Michelle my #1. Her skin dewy with just a pop of a bold lip made her the overall package.

BEST MAKEUP:

There’s no denying that Milla Jovovich is jaw dropping-ly gorgeous. But pair her with an angelic white Elie Saab gown, and a matte red lip and she is just beyond. Recreate her look with flawless skin, baby pink blush, heavy lashes, and a deep fire engine lip look. Product suggestions: NARS blush in Desire, Maybelline’s Falsies, and MAC’s Ruby Woo lipstick.

BEST HAIR:

Stacy Kiebler’s Marchesa dress was a fan fave for most, but for me her hair was the real standout. Perfectly coiffed subtle waves for an old Hollywood glamorous look without the rigid stiffness that commonly comes with the style. The side swept bangs, shimmering color complimented her strapless metallic gown in the best way.

Who were your favorites of the night?

Two trends we saw pop up here and there on the Fall 2012 runways were: velvet and high gloves. Neither trends are very practical in an everyday wardrobe, but the luxe looks can add a bit of flair to an otherwise traditional style.

Jason Wu, Ralph Lauren, Nicole Miller, and The Row.

My two favorites: Rebecca Taylor and Oscar de la Renta.

Gorgeous crushed velvet in rich hues like burgundy, and navy brought the texture away from middle school dance into sophistication. I absolutely love the Oscar de la Renta deep v dress which adds a bit of sex appeal to an otherwise outdated-looking fabric. Burgundy velvet also looks amazing in cropped trousers, or jackets… just steer clear of the velvet turtleneck a la 1990 and you’ll be runway ready for Fall.

DVF, Tory Burch, J. Mendel, and Alexander Wang.

High gloves are the epitome of class and glamour. Reminiscent of opera attendance, the trend can look too formal for every day wear. But sport the style in a hot fabric like leather paired with a sleeveless fitted top and you have instant bad ass appeal.

These two trends can be easily hidden in your wardrobe until you feel fully comfortable rocking the full on look. Tuck gloves into a jacket or longer sleeves. Wear a velvet mini dress under a blazer. But I say go all out, rock these luxe looks!

For those of us a bit too accident-prone to embrace Fall’s white trend, enter the perfect opposite: burgundy. The deep, rich hue is elegant, a beautiful neutral base similar to black, and even better, flattering on most-to-all skin tones. Extra benefit, burgundy looks amazing with black, navy, gray, white pretty much all bases and can color block beautifully with emerald green, cobalt blue, rich purples or any jewel tones.

J. Mendel, Elizabeth and James, Christian Siriano, and Helmut Lang.

Look for sleek silhouette, tailored pieces like the gorgeous Elizabeth and James blazer and cropped pant combo. That will be my burgundy must have for Fall.

DKNY, Jason Wu, Peter Som, and Rodarte.

Rag and Bone, Yigal Azrouel, Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren

The complimentary hue will transition perfectly with your existing wardrobe, a little bit more practical than that technicolor Simpson-trend we saw at Jeremy Scott.

Right before I left for my eight week winter escape in LA, I just purchased the most gorgeous burgundy shawl wrap coat from Elie Tahari and was crushed that Southern CA’s temps wouldn’t allow me to wear it. But lucky me, it’s the “it” shade for Fall!

Winter white. It’s the chicest for those who take cabs, cars, anything but the subway. For the rest of us, that pristine blank slate is threatened at every corner. But the majority of designers this season chose to begin their runway show with the sleek, chic basic and we must adapt. If you’re hesitant to wear white from tip to top, pair it with black, extra points if it’s leather.

White:

J. Mendel, Rachel Zoe, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang (L to R).

Phillip Lim, Derek Lam, Prabal Gurung, Peter Som and more went pure for Fall. White is the sleekest of chic, so stay away from frills and stick to tailored pieces. Cropped trousers, belted jackets, and blazers can be tied into any wardrobe. Or go all out a la Proenza with white leather.

As gorgeous as these all white pieces are, I’m extremely clumsy and fear this to be the most dangerous trend of the season. Invest in fabrics that can be dry cleaned easily, or try a light cream or beige. I’m stocking up on Tide to Go pens now.

Since moving to New York in 2009 this is the first season I have missed fashion week. As fun (and warm) as LA is right now, I’m truly missing the chaos, events, lights, exhaustion, all-consuming greatness that is New York fashion week.

I swooned over Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta for absolutely unreachable, over the moon, gorgeous pieces. This week I’ll show you a few of the trends I’ve noticed through catching a live stream here and there….

Leather:

Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Rodarte, J. Mendel.

Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler, and Helmut Lang all embraced leather to the highest level for Fall. From head to toe leather will be it. Proenza and Michael Kors put the loose leather trousers as the most covetable item. Leather dresses, sleeves, and jackets will be present as the toned down version, but I plan to go full out. The DKNY collection shows a fun, flirty way to incorporate leather in any look. Vintage leather pieces, or high quality faux-leather for a more affordable version. But be prepared to rock the hardcore look all season long.

Special shout out to these Proenza Schouler boots that stopped my heart. I will be saving every extra dollar in a fund to purchase these this Fall.

Expect more runway trendspotting once I have a bit more time to spend hours upon hours on Style.com. What are your favorite trends you’ve been seeing so far for Fall?

Through my desktop inspiration folder I’ve noticed an increase in one style: florals. Not the sweetheart dresses and skirts we normally see each Spring, but a bolder version. Floral, or next level floral peplum tops like Jamie Kings, paired with bold pants is the perfect way to step up your Spring style. Bold pants in wide leg or cropped are a must-have and rather than a basic white or black tee, pair it with a print!

Jamie King in peplum. Blair + Rachel rocking similar floral color scheme with their chosen bright pants. Notice the hot pink flowers in Blair’s top, and Rachel’s red-on-red.

My other ultimate must-have is floral pants. Seen on runways, street style, and now every shop they’re the sweetest style out there. I love the look of a lighter color base like mint or cream, or ultra-bold graphic like the ones below on the left. Floral denim is perfect for weekends + brunch, try cropped cotton like these for a casual-work appropriate look.

Shop the look with Paige Denim, Current/Elliott or for a more neutral, these J.Brand’s.

I’ve escaped the east coast cold for a few weeks and came to Los Angeles. Working crazy out here for Grammys, Oscars, and a few other events is worth it to trade the puffy coat for skirts + dresses. I’ve been trying every appetizer on the menu, shopping at any store that takes credit card, and living off of coffee + no sleep. It’s my first time back in Southern California since graduating college, and I have really, really missed it! The consistent cloudless days is enough to make me lose all ties to NYC.

Here are a few pictures through my instagram to see what I’ve been up to. If you’re a iphone user follow me @everyday_runway, otherwise check them out on webstagram.

Layering in bright, bold colors for those chilly nights. And rocking my favorite piece: long sleeve mini dress.

Highlights: dinner at Katsuya, macarons at Bottega Louie, Dior Addict in Paris lipstick, our LA apartment, pre-Grammy party at the Getty House, and a club overlooking the city nightscape.

Do you have any must dos, sees or eats in LA?!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is a holiday I will always embrace. I’m an ultimate girlie girl and feel like this holiday was made for me! I love wearing, red + pink, sparkle, the works. But instead of going straight to the heart-print dress, this year it’s more fun to play with themes in a classic way. Go for either red or pink, base with black, and sparkle in gold or silver.

In college, my sorority had an ‘NBA’ dinner- No Boys Allowed. Regardless if you were single, or taken, we spent one night just us girls to celebrate having fun and the love in our life, romantic or not. I suggest sending a special note, calling a friend, or baking something sweet for someone unexpected! Let them know they’re an important person in your life… and you can look cute while doing so.

Click the above link to see the stores my picks are from. Essie’s Fifth Avenue + Maybelline’s Red Revival are my go-to colors year round and are perfect for this holiday. Nine West’s new Love Fury line not only has an amazing scent, but a fierce heel to go with it. Love them!

Last night’s Grammys award show was full of amazing performances, people, and awards. For the first time I’ve been in Los Angeles during the week and had the pleasure of attending pre-Grammy parties with some of the best. But the thing I love most is tracking trends shown and transitioning them into my daily wardrobe. Here are a few of my favorite trends:

1. Gold Belts.

Giuliana Rancic, Gwenyth Paltrow, and Paris Hilton were all seen wearing the shiniest of thin golden belts. Each wearing them with an entirely different style. For work, pair the belt with a shirt dress, in silk. For play, wear it around the thinest part of your waist and a body con dress for a stunning look. Accent it with gold bangles for more bling, or simple studs for less.

2. Deep V’s

Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, and Rihanna showed how to stun in three gorgeous ways. Katy chose an ethereal Elie Saab piece that sparkled as much as her personality. Carrie’s covered up look shocked in the back with a gorgeous cut out design. And Rihanna co-designed her jaw-dropped Armani gown. To transition this trend the red carpet, skip the look at work but go all out on the weekend. Draped backs or mesh covered pieces are more conservative, or dare yourself to wear it full out. Remember the best rule: if your back is bare, cover up your front or your legs for balance.

3. Save the statements, stay classic.

Nicki + Gaga need to skip the chaos and keep it classy like Adele. Many trends on the red carpet, or runways should stay there. If you want to rock a look, try a toned down version. Fergie rocked a gorgeous neon Jean Paul Gaultier that tipped the line of crazy/cool. Try a neon lace top with jeans or check out Christopher Kane x JBrand!

And always and forever, sparkles, sequins and glitter (see: Kelly Osbourne, Adele, and Taylor Swift). Of course. Check out my pinterest board for more commentary and photo credits.

It’s finally winter here in New York City. I haven’t taken my beanie off in three days now and yet all I can think about is Spring. The pretty pastels and allure of each day being warmer until it’s sundress weather again!

Here are two pastel packs that are currently on my mind. The first, the EOS trio holiday pack, I received over the holiday. The little balms come in the cutest pod packaging perfect to slip in any clutch or bag. The flavors: strawberry sorbet, sweet mint, and passion fruit give the allure of sweet summer. And well, they’re fun. Any time I pop one out of my bag I get at least one boy-stare confused as all hell to what it is.

The second, not yet released, Spring collection from essie. We all know my absurd obsession with nail polish and I want every. single. color. This collection is ‘Wall Street inspired’ but from what I know, my finance girl friends can choose clear or pale pink as their choice hues but I won’t complain given that I’m most excited by the green in this collection!

The green is much paler than Mint Candy Apple, my other favorite essie. I’ll skip the purple, assuming it’s similar to Lilacism and go straight for the dynamite orange. Pantone’s color of the year is Tangerine Tango and I am fully embracing it!
