Hello all, Helpful Hank Here,
It’s been a few weeks since I have last posted a blog spot. Been kind of busy working on various projects. Hummie and Harvey Among many of the projects I have been working on one was the re-finishing of a secretary cabinet. Seen below.

We had picked it up at Revivals thrift shop in the Sun Center, as we needed a piece for our guest bedroom, which we had recently put a new face on it with a coat of paint. We put up new drapes and then reconfigured the room. Once done we found that the room was in need of another piece of furniture to balance it out. We picked up this vintage secretary for $10.00 at Revival and with a little work, it fit the room perfectly. I always try to use recycled product as much as possible. I love to re-purpose old and used furniture and give it new life.

Memory Lane

Recently, I had the chance to put a video together for Bloom in the Desert’s seventh anniversary. It was interesting to go through the photos with Rev Kev and hear about some of the history of how Bloom got started in there home moving to Palapas’ outside area before finding a home at the YMCA. I want to share a salad recipe and dressing recipe with everyone’ It is one of my favorite meals for a hot day. Salads are easy to make and are quit refreshing on a hot day with a glass of Ice Tea or and Arnold Palmer.

Take 2 chicken breast marinate with Honey Garlic powder and Olive oil. Once marinated, grill until cooked making sure to baste with the left over marinade.
Once you have grilled your chicken set aside and let it cool as you put together your salad. (One of my favorite things to put in a salad is cut up nectarine.) Once you have, your salad made cut up your grilled chicken into chunks and add.

To make the dressing combine 1 cup of mango blended till liquid, ¾ cup Olive Oil, ½ cup Balsamic Vinegar, 1 and ½ tablespoons garlic powder and 2 tablespoons of Honey. Whisk your dressing till blended completely the pour over salad and serve. This makes for a nice summer/fall meal. The dressing also works well as a dipping sauce.

American Art Awards

Recently I received notice on a couple of pieces that I submitted to the American Art Awards. This is a national competition. Galleries from across the US judge the works from several different categories. I was fortunate enough to have this opportunity presented to me from Mr. Thom Bierdz (you may know him as Philip Chancellor on the Young and the Restless a popular daytime drama.) My Piece Cherry Bomb was one of the finalists in the Abstract Modern category and my piece Freedom to Marry was given top honors in the Political Art category.

Hello All Helpful Hank Here, I would like to talk about a few things today. Tool use safety, The Well in the Desert and, Bee Stings.

Well this past weekend my partner and I framed in Mishaps that led to one trip to the Emergency room and thankfully not two trips. Friday night I was making a hat rack. I had finished cutting my pieces turned off the saw and as it slowed down, I moved a piece of scrap off the platform of the table saw. The blade met my thumb as it was slowing down and took a chunk. No stitches but a lot of pain. Then on Monday My partner who is allergic to bees was stung not once but 3 times all at once. Luckily he is not as allergic as he once was (three strikes and you are out heck one strike and you are out.) he ended up with a bad case of hives and feeling like shite.

So here we go. Rule number one: When using power tools such as saws and other cutters. Use the guard. That is what it is there for. Rule number two: Don’t move items away from saw when it is still moving. Rule number three: Don’t rush or be impatient.

Rushing and being impatient is what nearly cost my thumb and got me a trip to the emergency room. It also put my Kitchen Cabinet project back a week or two, as without use of my left opposable thumb I’m stuck in neutral. (That’ll learn me.) It is Ironic as I tend to be the person who always follows these rules whether it is out of fear of accidents happening (case in point) or out of respect for the power of the tool. (A bit off both) T he one time I let my guard down or up as the case was. Bam. So be careful folks and learn from my mistake.

It seems at least at my hose we are having a bit of a problem with aggressive bees. They like to hang around the grape arbor and citrus trees. I often will see to bee’s rolling around on the ground one on top of the other looking like they are fighting. I thought maybe that there is a queen near by and they are fighting to be her mate. As it turns out it is the female workers who sting and leave there stinger behind in the skin after which; they die. Volunteering

I know I harp on getting involved. Especially when it comes to the marriage Equality issue. There are other volunteer opportunities as well. My Husband I participated in one such volunteer opportunity for the first time this last Monday. (and we plan to continue to volunteer) at Well in the Desert here in Palm Springs. It is called “Sandwich Monday’s”. What is “Sandwich Mondays”? well it is making Sandwiches for those who have less than. It is a piece of cake to do and a lot of fun. Bloom In The Desert Ministries (An all-inclusive Ministries.) organizes this. They need volunteers. It is every Monday from about 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. You will walk away wanting to do it again and feeling good about things. I will provide all the information you need to participate at the bottom of this column.

I am always looking for people to share volunteer opportunities with me as it is a great way for anyone to give a bit back. If you have a roof over your head, food in the refrigerator, a mode of transportation, (We took our bikes.) clothes on your back, you should get involved. There are people with much less, getting involved in volunteering opportunities. Isn’t time you got involved? You’ll be amazed at how good you end up feeling.

The Vegetable Garden Experiment.

Ever since we moved to the desert, I have been attempting to grow a vegetable garden. My big problem is that the area I am using is a crab grass field. So I built raised planters put down my weed cloth and planted my seed. The problem is this the crab grass grows up through the same hole as the vegetables as they sprout, leaving me to wonder what good is weed cloth. So while some of my plants do o.k. others don’t. I decided to experiment a bit and planted some of those plants that were not doing so hot in the raised planter directly in the ground.

Making sure to pull as much of the crab grass as possible (as best I could roots and all) up and removing from my planting area. I then plant my seeds, in this case sunflowers, corn, beans and, some flowers. So far, they seem to be doing O.K. My corn stocks are getting larger then the ones planted in the raised planter, and my sunflowers and bean plants are looking healthy. We shall see. I will keep everyone posted. I also made sure to put down small bark as mulch after planting my seeds. This not only helps hold the water in but it also helps keep the crab grass as at bay as you can.

My vegetable garden is for the most part full sun. I have some plants in there that like partial sun and some plants that are in wire baskets ( notorious for drying out) What I have done to provide some shade and to keep the baskets from too much direct sun light (which will dry them out quicker) is to use umbrellas to shade them. I have some of the colorful umbrellas that hook on to chairs via clamps and then I picked a few up at thrift shops. Not only does it give a bit of whimsy to your vegetable garden. It shades the plants that need it. They are easily moved around as well.
There are vegetables and fruits that can do well in hanging baskets as long as you keep them watered properly. Vegetables such as peas, beans and, Strawberries. Two key factors to keep in mind are making sure you have a large enough hanging basket and making sure that you’re not losing dirt. It is important that you use a good base for your baskets that will line the basket solidly while allowing enough dirt to plant in. I like to use a good Spanish Moss. Other Mosses work as well. Avoid plastic encased by moss as I find that it doesn’t allow the soil to breathe as it needs and in turn can cause root rot. It is always best to plant hanging baskets in part shade or create part shade like I did with umbrellas. Depending on where you hang them at and the climate they can be watered as little as every two days. Planting them in good soil is key. I start with a good gardening soil, and if I am recycling soil from last year, I always use Miracle Grow. I mix it in with the dirt in a large bucket. I water the soil for two days before I transfer it to my hanging baskets. I feel it helps to work the fertilizer into the soil. (another good all-purpose fertilizer is VF-11.) I then take my conditioned soil add in some vermiculite to it and I’m ready to go.

After my soil is prepped and ready I line my baskets with the moss. I then fill with the dirt and water letting stand for a day. By doing this I get an indication of how long the dirt in the basket stays damp. If it dries out real fast, you might want to find a different place to hang it.

Trees are a great place to hang a hanging basket. They provide filtered sunlight in spring summer and early fall which helps to keep the water in the soil. I also like to fertilize lightly a few weeks after I have planted my seeds as a little boost. Keep your baskets watered properly and soon it could be flowing over with peas, beans and Strawberries.

Other edibles that work well in a basket are herbs of all kind. From Sage to Parsley, Oregano, Basil and, Thyme.

Another option for lining your baskets is to use live moss. You can pick up a flat for under twenty dollars at places like Lowes or Home Depot. Face the plants outward so that the dirt faces in fill with soil and plant seeds. Using live moss makes it easier to plant some seeds in the sides of your basket so that you have them sprout outward from the basket. There are many ways to plant your baskets even incorporating edible flowers such as Nasturtiums. All it takes is just a little imagination.

Dogs and Palm Seeds

This is the time of year that the Palm Seeds tend to drop from the palms. I don’t know if any other pet owners have this problem but my dogs love to eat them. They chew and chew on them like they would a bone then swallow them. (it is not for lack of raw hide and dog bones as they get plenty of them.) I am unable to find anything that says Queen palm tree seeds are poison to dogs but, in my research I did find out that Sego palms are highly toxic not only to dogs but to little children as well. There toxicity is fatal in most cases from what I could ascertain. Good to know as we tried to grow some segos when we first moved down here. They are pretty but to finicky for my taste. Forty years after Stone Wall we as a glbt community still struggle for complete acceptance and equality. While we may never gain total acceptance we can gain total equality. As I listened to the last of the speakers a young woman got up to talk about how she woke up that Tuesday went to school and found out around second period that she would not be allowed to marry the person she loved when one day she found that person because she was a lesbian. I thought about the message that this ruling was sending our youth. Our glbt youth, our straight youth, our questioning youth. We are telling them that some of them are less than. No one should have to grow up feeling less than. We are teaching these kids that they do not matter. Is this the message we want to send our youth?

It doesn’t matter what ones religious view or affiliations are when it comes to civil rights, marriage is a civil matter and whatever religious aspects we bring to a marriage ceremony are our own by choice.

I like those vintage t’s that are so popular right now and I got to thinking to my self I could make one of these. So I went over to Michaels Art supply and picked up a Blank template for stenciling (they come in packs of three and run about 3 or 4 bucks) a package of Iron on transfer for transferring images on to cloth.

I bought the blank stencils to create original designs and the iron on transfer pack (They run 8 dollars or more depending how many are in the package.) to find images I could use from the internet.

I headed home with my items and set out to take some old gray t-shirts and give them new life. I washed and dried the t’s. I got on-line, did an image search for vintage tee-shirt slogans, and didn’t find a whole lot. So I did a regular old web search and I found many sites that sell them. Most of these site have pictures of the slogans so I choose the ones I wanted to use, I saved the pictures to a file I then opened the picture up in a picture editing program and reversed the image so it could be viewed correctly once transferred. Then I printed them out on the photo transfer paper. I laid out my t-shirt on my ironing board placed the transfer on top of my t-shirt. I then placed an old towel over that. (This helps prevent you from any burning.) Set your Iron on its highest setting without being on a steam setting. Iron over the transfer pressing down firmly. Once you have ironed over entire stencil let cool. After things have cooled peel one corner slightly back to check and see if the transfer has set, if not then go over it again with the iron. Once your transfer is set starting at one of the corners and peel off the backing and you have a vintage t-shirt and you have saved yourself a bit of money.

Creating a stencil, to stencil a shirt is not as difficult as it sounds. The tools you will need is a blank stencil sheet an exacta knife (Folks, please be careful when using any knife but exacta knifes can cut your fingers real easy so be safe and remember this is not to be used by children.) Spray adhesive a cutting surface and, your image. For my image, I chose an ornate cross I found on line by doing an image search. I save the picture to my files then printed it out. Once I had it printed, (Making sure it is the right size for my blank stencil.) I sprayed my adhesive on the back then placed my image on the blank stencil making sure that there are no bumps bubbles or creases. (It will dry quickly.) Once my image has set on the blank I take my cutting surface place it under the blank and using the exacta knife I cut around my image about a ¼ inch from the lines of the image. I leave four uncut areas at the points of the cross so it is still attached to the stencil sheet. I then go back and cut around the image again still leaving the four uncut areas. This time I cut on the actual out line of the image. Once your image is cut out, you can peel your paper image away from your stencil

Once I have done all my cutting, I simply pop out the pieces that I have cut away and I have my stencil. Now that your stencil is done, you can use it for a variety of applications, whether you want to use it on a wall Muriel or on a piece of clothing. Note that when stenciling less is always more. What I mean by that is to keep your stencil brush on the dry side. Once you have paint on your brush tap it down on a surface to take off the excess paint. Too much paint and it bleeds through. Lightly spray the back of your stencil to adhere it to the surface you want to stencil.

Creating transfers is easier then making a stencil. Stencils can be used for a variety of projects; transfers are a little more limited. You can however use decal paper instead of transfer paper and create your own stickers, which can be fun for the kids.

While make stencils can be fun, adult supervision is needed if kids are going to be making and using them.

Honoring our Vets

Hello All Helpful Hank here,

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. A chance for every citizen to honor our veterans. My father was a vet of the Korean War. (The pre cursor to the Vietnam War.) Though I myself am not an advocate of war, I will always support our troops. People do what they feel they have to do. As a teenager just out of High School I tried to enlist in the Army but my father was having none of it. I was eighteen and I thought that was that what could he do? Plenty…. Because I have some disabilities, he was able to go down to the recruiting office and get me un-recruited. He explained me later what he had seen in Korea. He told me he did not want me to be left with such images. I am grateful to my father. It wasn’t that he was against the war; He just didn’t want his son to have to fight in one if he could avoid it. (Later one of my foster brothers would fight in Desert Storm and my Nephew has served four or for terms in Iraq.)
The men and women join with good intentions; they are fighting for our freedom. For that, they should be commended as their hearts are in the right place. Personally, I believe that there can be justified wars. (WWI WWII) Even though war is tragic it can and the toll can be high, it can prevent a much worse fate. World War II is a prime example of this. I must also say I feel wars are becoming a rather archaic way of settling disputes between nations and countries. This in no means should negate the fact that women and men, our children, sons and daughters are fighting battles for what they believe is the betterment of all people. So this Memorial day Say a prayer or keep a thought of safe return for a solider and a veteran. Remember, until there are no more wars and the last Veteran has passed away there will always be a need to remember what veterans of war fought for Our Freedom is.

Summertime, Summertime

Summertime is just around the corner, kids get out of school, families have reunions, picnics and trips to the park. Here are some fun ways to enjoy your gatherings that are inexpensive or free to do during your summer whether you are a kid or a grown-up.
Some of these activities I remember from when I was a child others I have just discovered.
Suitcase Game
A new game I just learned about (On Good Morning America of all places.) The Object of the game is for each member of the team to put all the clothes in the suitcase on. How it works is you have teams of two. They line up on a field or grass area. (If anyone should fall the won’t get hurt.) Each team has two suitcases. One team member sprints over to where the other team member is, opens the suitcase up that the other team member has puts on the clothes in the suitcase over their own clothes and races back with the suitcase. Once back, the other teammate does the same. The first team, with each team member back in his or her original place wins the race. This can be adapted to a kids version, Adults only version or mixed adults and kids. The beauty of this game is you can make it as difficult or easy as possible. You can also substitute a suitcase for a bag as well.

It’s A Cakewalk.
When I was a kid in elementary school, we would have a cakewalk at the annual school fair. How it works is you have your guest bring a one layer or two-layer cake any kind (Ice Cream cakes not recommended.) each cake should be on some sort of dish. Then your participants form a circle. Each participant holds the cake and platter on top of his or her head. They all have a mark that they are on. (If it is not windy paper plates work well for the mark.)As the music starts they walk around the circle. One mark is removed. When the music stops anyone not on a mark or who drops their cake is out. (If someone has dropped their cake their mark is removed as well) The last person standing is the winner. The surviving cakes become dessert for your guest. (Livelier music makes for a better game. You can also substitute bowls of water for cakes, which can be lots of fun watching the water spill and participants getting wet, as well as a nice way to cool down in the summer heat.)

Treasure Hunt:
This is an easy thing to set up and again is a good game for all ages. It takes a little more prep time then some other games though. Here’s how it works. You work either as an individual or in teams. Each team or individual is given their first clue and once they find the object in their first clue it leads them to the second clue. They must find all the clues and return them to whom ever you have collecting them. The first person or team to collect all the clues and turn them in wins. (You can also have them collect they objects that their clue is attached to. Who says Easter egg hunts are just for Easter.

Summertime doesn’t have to be expensive to be fun. Hot dogs Hamburgers and corn on the cob are simple fare that are sure to please. I like to put out my Cherry tomatoes that grow in my garden as a snack. Water Mellon is inexpensive and easy to prepare. Instead of Soda How about Ice tea and lemonade mix in a little food coloring with your batch of lemonade to create colorful looking lemonade.

Unusable pieces of fabric can be good for writing your treasure hunt clues on just cut into wide strips and write on the side that your writing is most visible. You can also give your treasure hunt a theme. How about “The Amazing Race" as a theme? If you want to get real elaborate you could set it up so that each team has a decoder (A chart that matches a number symbol or letter to each letter of the alphabet.) and they have to decode the symbols numbers or letters to figure out what clue says.

Next Stop Iowa

Hello All Helpful Hank Here,

I would like to talk about a subject that I feel personally connected to. That is the decision just handed down in Iowa and Vermont to allow same gender marriage. The decision to allow same gender marriage in Iowa and Vermont is a victory for all. For me personally it is validating.

I have to say I was a bit surprised at the out come. No offense to Iowa but I have never really thought of it as a progressive state. If Americas heartland can come to terms with the separation of church and state creating equality for all then there is hope. Iowa and Vermont clearly see that discrimination is not acceptable on any level.

Marriage Equality transcends just the right to marry whom you want, it legitimized our very being, our families that we have, and our community. Once we have marriage equality across the United States, bans on adoption to Same Gender couples like the one in Arkansas won’t matter. Same gender couple will be able to marry and adopt. Laws like Arkansas’ prop 11 will go by the way side, as they were specifically put into place to stop adoption by same gender couples with the guise of making it seem that they are not discriminating.

Studies show that there are markedly no real differences in the development of children who are raised in a household with same gender parent verses opposite gender parents. The only real difference that was discovered was that children of same gendered parents do not feel as confined to typical gender specific roles when it comes to life and careers. This vastly opens up options for these children, as they become adults. I also think that another benefit is that this children go up to not just tolerate different types of people but rather accept the differences in people and celebrate those difference as well as to see that our differences are one of the things take make us the same.

What was particularly profound for me in the Iowa decision was the passage near the end.

The court said: "that while many oppose marriage for religious reasons, religion cannot justify a law excluding gay people from marriage. State government can have no religious views, the opinion says, either directly or indirectly expressed through its legislation. This proposition, the Court goes on to say, is the essence of the separation of church and state."

Finally two more states that get it. Sure, we have had to push and shove to get equality and we will continue to have to do so. However, we should let this strengthen our resolve; we all need to do what we can to move forward towards total equality. Whether we are stuffing envelopes, participating in local really and marches for marriage equality and adoption rights, or we are able to participate nationally. We all need to be a part of it. We must never forget that when one American looses their rights because of who they are, or who they love, all American’s are at risk of loosing their rights. One final thought. Marriage can only be de-valued by the two people in it.

Note as I was writing this blog post Maine ended up enacting laws granting same Gender couple the right to marry. Another victory for equality. Another state that gets it

Travel Time

We are coming up on that time of year for many, travel time. Summer comes around kids get out of school and as it was with my family growing up; it is time for a vacation. Travel restrictions for the airlines have relaxed a bit but, the alert level seems to stay around Orange. Recently it seem that more and more people are planning vacations and flights through on-line sites such as Travelocity, Price Line and other discount sites. One of my friends used Price line to plan her trip home to Canada with her daughter. She was able to secure her flight and a car through Price Line. Her total cost for airfare and car rental was less $800.00 for the two of them. Now they didn’t have to take a hotel as they are staying with family. Right now, they airlines are trying to get our business so it is the ideal time to plan a getaway. Price Line has a feature that allows you to negotiate your price for everything from flight to car and hotel stays. Travelocity has a site dedicated to gay travel

There are many different sites that you can use for planning a vacation some charge a fee some don’t but overall it they are a good way to book travel. Just remember discount travel will give you more bang for your buck while on vacation as the money you save you can use to make your vacation even better then you thought it could be.

Hello all, Helpful Hank Here, Today I want to talk about Reinventing how we make our income. Here in the valley the unemployment rate has jumped to 10.3%. I understand it’s the highest it has ever been or the highest it has been in years. If you are unemployed it can seem like you will never find another job.

In this economy companies are just not bringing in new staff and are reluctant to fill needed vacant position choosing rather to train and teach employees that they have to be able to handle the jobs of the laid off, filling only positions that are necessary.

Unemployment rates seem to be cyclical. I find they change about every 4 to 8 years based on my experience. We have just come out of an eight year cycle that started us off on top, companies were hiring the economy was good. ( the pervious eight year cycle put us there) As we progressed through this last eight year cycle jobs became more and more scares, The unemployment rate jumped and continued to grow to it’s highest rate ever.
This particular eight year cycle was particularly nasty. Some people ride it out as best as they can others take the reins and decide to chart their own course. Both can be equally difficult.

Riding it out is not easy. Sure our economy is starting to pick up ( slowly) but, what have you done to make your own economic situation improve? Things will get a bit worse before the get better. That old adage that it is always darkest before the clouds lift is true.
What id those clouds could have a silver lining? They can it is up to you. You can do things to improve and make your income better. It won’t happen overnight but they seeds you sew today can grow into something wonderful.

Right now we see an increase of Work from home opportunities and it is difficult to find one that is legit or that you can actually make an income from without 1. laying out a good amount of money to start. 2. Actually make enough money to survive on.

Growing a small business is tough enough. Growing a small business in this economy is even tougher. Here are some thoughts and Ideas on how to get started based on my experiences.

When starting your own business I feel it is best to use all avenues available to you and there are many. Take a look on the internet to see who else is providing the type of services that you are looking at providing. Figure out what you can do to set yourself apart from the heard. Look at what types of social networks might be the best to use. Google search networks (Example graphic design networking.) to see if there is a networking site that pertains to what you want to do. Use all networking sites you can to market yourself.

It is important to look at what your natural abilities are. For instance if you are an office worker who has lost their job think about freelancing your services. If you are a techie do the same, freelance. You can freelance most services. You can buy a domain name for as little as 0.79 cents these days and you can even buy simple software that will allow you to set up a page for your domain name. If you can’t afford such software then use social networking sites to set up a web presence to offer your services. Right now I have a client who is using My space as a starting point. We have set up a business profile for them and they have already had several people check out their page as well as friend them. Doing this yourself will cost you nothing but time. In conjunction with this make sure that you are taking advantage of the many temporary placement agencies to help support your endeavors. Always make sure that any assignment that you choose to go out on will in someway help you to further your own goals. (I have actually turned down assignments because the pay and time involved was such that I would be losing money. I have also taken assignments that even though I might lose a bit of money the company that I performed the services for might be of some benefit to me as far as a reference for my own business. The benefit of working temp jobs is that it can help keep your skill level up. When signing up for a temp agency take every test you can that will show what your skill level is. Use this as a base line for your skill set. If your test scores are high then use that to your advantage by marketing it on the social networking sites. If like me you are in the expert range of excel then say so on these site. Leave a business card with the person(s) on the job site so the remember who you are and the work you did while there.

In this economy we have to look outside the box but, this is nothing new. Great mind have always approached life this way. We have to combine our efforts and open our options.

The one. Key thing in all of this is marketing ourselves. It is not as difficult as it seems. We have many free marketing opportunities that are available to us. Social network marketing is one of the best ways to market yourself. You can get your name out there along with the services you provide at no cost except for time, and it can be time well spent. With sites like Twitter, Face Book and others you can leave short little notes promoting your business, posting them several times a day.

It is going to take time but anything worth working for ( a stable income and career) is worth having. Cross promotion of yourself is important. Why would you color with one color in a crayon box when there are 64 colors? Use all the social networking sites you can to promote yourself. You will not use them all the same way, but use them. Again, Sites like twitter and face Book are good for short blurbs about you, what you are trying to establish and, where you want to go with it. Twitter is especially good for this. Google search the phrase Twitter Getter. This is an online source for generating a following. A bigger following means more people seeing what you have to offer. Sites like My space or The Private Membership are good sites to set up your virtual storefront. Use these sites to set up your business profile. Join or start groups on these sites that are related to what you are doing. If you are a freelance electrician then join some of the groups that are for the electrical contracting community (My Space has a few.)Then, use sites like face Book and twitter to market it and yourself.

Gone are the days of walking up and down Main Street and handing out your resume. Time is more wisely spent marketing yourself on line.

Educate yourself, learn new things. A year ago, I knew nothing about creating web graphics, today I sell my creations on sites set up for exactly that. Again, think outside of the box. Learning new things and be patient with yourself while you do this can vastly increase your potential for making an income. It might take you in a direction you never thought possible. As you learn new skills, you will find the skill that you excel at and in turn offer those services as well.
Do not be afraid to offer your services at no cost to charitable organizations. Not only can you claim the time (and any expense you cover) as a donation on your taxes but word of mouth is powerful. If you do this, ask for a letter of recommendation from the organization or even just a one or two line sentence that you can post on your different social networking profiles or web site for your business if you have one.

They key to moving forward and getting to where you want to be is in how you look at each day. For me I approach each day as if I were working a 9-5. I take time to map out and make a list of what I want to accomplish every day. I check those Items off once the task is completed for that day. My workweek though doesn’t always end at five or stop on the weekends. I know it takes more then that. Starting with a 9-5 base is just that a start. The more you but into it the more you can get from it.

Taking regular breaks helps to keep you focused. After you have been on line, on the phone calling agencies for three, four hours your eyes can get fuzzy so step away and take a break come back with clearer eyes.

Make sure that your day included some exercise even if it is just short walks a few times a day. Sitting behind a computer all day can be hard on your body so Stretching is a great way to help with that.

One Final Thought, I’m a work in progress as are we all. What works for one person may not work for another. Don’t be afraid to try different things. The fact that we keep trying to find a better way on this journey is good. If the Idea excites you, figure out how you can make it work for you.

Relax your on vacation and beside you might learn a thing or two

Hi All, Helpful Hank Here, Today I would like to talk a bit about Travel. Now Hanks husband does a lot of traveling, But O’l Hank here doesn’t get to do a whole lot himself. I have to keep the home fires burning. When I do get to travel, I enjoy it. For the most part, it is just as easy and safe to travel by plane, and sometimes even cheaper then to travel by car. I haven’t been many places but where I have been for the most part I have enjoyed. I would say that every one of the trips I have taken have a special place inside of me. I may not remember every little detail but the key points are still there. A few trips really stand out for me. My First trip to Canada, we stopped on the way in Laramie Wyoming. Who would have thought that just a few short years later a young boy by the name of Mathew Shepard would have lost his life? It is such a sweet and innocent looking town. I remember the people to be nothing but nice.

My trip to the Estes Park in Colorado We drove into town just as the parade was coming up the street for the Scottish Irish Games. We had to pull off the side off the road and let the parade pass us by.

My trip to Hawaii were I got to swim by happenstance with a giant Sea tortes and view those magnificent sun sets and the trip on saddle back road in the mustang convertible.

My trip to Nashville and the Ryman Auditorium. Seeing the Mother Church was a site. It’s funny we call it taking a vacation or holiday but I think we learn the most when we are on vacation. Here’s the thing. We are given opportunities to meet new and interesting people and see things we have not seen before or not noticed before. So our minds are open to learning as well as experiences that can alter us forever both good and bad.

For years, I did not like Donald Duck. When I was seven years old, we went to Disney Land. I couldn’t wait to see Mickey and Donald and get their autographs. I got Mickey’s autograph and a picture. I went to get Donald’s autograph and he scribbled all over Mickey’s autograph. I wasn’t about to take my picture with that trader.

One camping trip with my family a man lost his life in the lake at the campsite as everyone watched. That night my family gathered everyone in the campsite, we had a big O’l fire, and every kid was given something to make music with as my father played guitar and we sang away our troubles. It was the only camping trip that my Grandmother who I was very close to and grandfather ever went on with us.

In Yosemite, I never felt as small or tall standing next to those rocks. When a couple of cubs were treed the rangers that came to rescue them… Lets just say something was awakened that summer. Pikes Peak, Amazing. Other trips have had things fascinating as well. In Canada we saw an intricate drawing of a male nude in pencil on tile that had to have taken a bit of time to do. In Wyoming, we saw this flat rock about 20’ around that set centered on a pointed rock as if it were a table waiting to be sat at. In Hawaii it was the Guys playing Volley Ball in a sandy area between to sets of building wearing nothing but board shorts, Getting caught in the rain with the top down coming back on saddle back road from Hilo, Seeing wild orchids growing on the side of the road and, graffiti done with little white stones on the sides of large slanted and flat rocks. In Arizona, we got off on the wrong road and I have this great picture set in the middle of the Arizona desert were my best friend her husband myself and my husband are standing at different points. We ended up in one of the vortex areas. But that dirt road got us back to where we were staying and we had an adventure in the process. Those red rocks are incredible.

I may not travel the world (yet) but, I have been quit a number of places. The things that I have learned are that a vacation should always be enjoyable, even when you have mishaps, you can still have an enjoyable vacation. You will only have as much fun as you let yourself. We tend to be more open to experiences (which can be both good and bad.) which we can learn from. The memories you will take away are priceless.

I recently planned a trip to see my best friend, my G son’s mother as well as my G-son. I made sure that I planned the trip plenty in advance. And got on-line to check out flights. For me and for many people the best place to do this are sites such as Travelocity and Price Line. With Price Line, you can actually bid your fare. Tell them what your travel dates are and where you are traveling to and what you want to pay. They then will let you know when that fare is available. Two things here in doing this,1. Allow your self enough time to see if you can get the price, you want. (You can’t expect to bid on a trip that you are taking next week) and 2. Be prepared to pay for that trip when they contact you. To let you know your price has been met. Also allow yourself time to make arrangements if your price isn’t met. If you haven’t received notification that your price has been met, you want at least a 2 weeks to try and find a flight that is closer to your price range. If you don’t mind, flying stand by, taking a red eye or having layovers you might get an even better deal as well. Sometimes not flying directly to your destination can be a good thing. The trade off is time spent in an airport. You can also combine Hotel and Flight packages which can also save you money as well. Last minute travelers can also find deals on these sites as well.

These sites such as Price Line and Travelocity all have the same flights and sometimes it is just a matter of fees. (The fewer the better I opt for none) These sites make money off of your flight the fees are just cream on top. The fees can vary from site to site but they all have them hidden or seen it is just a matter of how much. Another thing to be aware of is luggage weight restrictions. I believe on most are lines your bag is aloud to be 50 lbs. anything over that you get charged. My Husband went over that his last flight home and it cost him a hundred dollars (it didn’t help that he had a bathroom sink in his suitcase. (A marble bowl that sits counter top it weighed about twenty-five pounds.) The charges can add up quickly for luggage over the weight limit.

I always say save your airline miles for a trip you really want to take. If you don’t have a mileage card get one that works with the airline, you are most likely to travel on for your trips. Or sign up for a mileage program directly with that airline. Always be aware of restrictions and black out dates even with sites like Price Line and Travelocity. You can also travel off-season safely to many locations and still have a blast

My last tips on travel are this, plan out what you would like to see once you arrive at your destination but don’t fill every waking moment with an activity. You should always have time for the unexpected. Don’t save it for the last day either. As you may find that you want to explore it more. If you are planning an extended stay somewhere (a week or more.) use that first full day to just explore and get your bearings. Sometimes the most enjoyable part of your vacation can come from the unexpected and oft not traveled roads we take. In countries where travel outside certain areas is dangerous believe it. Always pack things like Band-Aids, Pepto, aspirin ect. Any liquid items should be in your checked in luggage, as it won’t be confiscated. Make a list of Items you need to be sure to pack and check it off as they get packed. Forgetting your camera can be costly. It is also always good to keep your souvenir buying to a minimum. When I went to Hawaii we went to a flea market/swap meet on Hilo. They had beads that were made from local seeds shells and other native materials so I bought some put them on hemp cords and gave those as necklaces to the people I had planned to bring something back for. In Arizona I brought back pieces of red rock picked up a book on how to paint native symbols and once home with a little black paint and an over coat of varithain I created my souvenirs
On my trip to North Carolina to see my sister. I mined for stones. I got to keep what I found it cost me five dollars and I was and still am able to make pieces of jewelry as gifts. Mining for stones or gold can be a fun outing for a group of friends a family or, by yourself.

For those of you thinking about a Staycation as they are calling them. Make sure before you decide to do so that there are plenty of things for you to do on your day trips. See things in your area you haven’t taken the time to see. Go down to your local tourism center and find out in advance what there is to do in your hometown that you might not have thought of. You can then make an informed disicssion as to whether or not a staycation is right for you. And My very last 2 Tips are.1. Your on vacation NO WORK ALLOWED! This is a chance to relax and unwind. Why do you need to call the office? When I went to Hawaii I thoroughly enjoyed myself. When I got back my boss had closed up shop. There really wasn’t anything I could do while on vacation except enjoy it and If I had known I would have worried the whole time ( actually my husband says if we had known we would have stayed longer.) The bottom line is your job will be there when you get back and if not you’ll find another. Life is two short to fret on vacation. 2. don’t put yourself in hock to go on vacation. If you do come back and have a situation like mine happen at least you’ll have some money saved to live on while you get situated in another position.

The most important things about taking a vacation are to relax, unwind and, have fun. That’s what vacations are suppose to be.

Helpful Hanks Handy Hints: When going on Vacation tidy your house before you leave. There is nothing worse then coming home to a place that needs cleaning. On top of it you have all your un packing to do so there is more work on top of what you have left yourself. Also it is great to come home and have one day of rest before you have to go back to work.

In my last post I talked about two words Hope and Patients and how I have learned valuable lesson from each of these word and, how they have shaped my life. I’d like to know what you folks think. What words, phrases, or sayings motivate you? How have they have shaped you on your life’s journey.

Looking forward to your blog, it sounds like a great idea, and fun to see what surfaces round here! Best of luck too!

I know where there are literally 100's, if not 1000's of pounds of huge slabs, and tiles of marble. Slate, and other large pieces of natural stone that has either been removed in remodeling, or teardowns but do not contain any cement, or glue on them. Can these pieces be used in artist's mosaic works, or any other reuses that you could list? I really hate to see them go unused, and become buried in the sand where some of them lie, or turned into pebbles by land graders in the years to come.

I see beautiful pieces of solid wood furniture on curbs for the trash to take, or dumped in empty lots valley wide that are often rare woods, priceless antique. These items often contain hardware such as hinges, drawer slides, knobs, pulls, and decorum that are in perfect condition and again, often rare and unique items simply discarded.
Are there any uses for these items that are quite expensive to purchase and many are unique, and/or no longer manufactured. As a seller on E-bay I assure you what I am describing have a very high general resale value.

Any ideas, suggestion, or local references of someone who may be able to help me find a place for reuse or resale would be appreciated?

Dear Suzie, I love using pieces of scrap marble for mosaics. I use to work for a Marble contractor and obtained some through away pieces. I broke them up and using an Old coffee table that had no top to it I took a ¾” piece of Plywood cut it to size and used the Marble to create a new coffee table. This is a great way to recycle. The one thing you want to make sure of is that the pieces you use be of relatively the same thickness so you have a smooth surface on your mosaic. As the say one persons trash is another persons treasure and you never know what you are going to find discarded behind some of these high end resale shops, or even at garage sales. Sometimes you can find a piece of furniture that has great bones but it just needs to be refinished. Recently had been discussing making under the bed storage and I kid you not that evening we went to our favorite dumpster dive spot and sitting right next to the dumpster were to sets of drawers used for a waterbed. Each set had three drawers one drawer had it slider wheel detached. So we took it home I refinished it and we now use it for storage under the bed. The plus, was that it also had the cut plywood that lies on top and although I didn’t need those pieces for this project, I can use them for another project. Nice hardware can be expensive so if you can find it free take it while it is and use it. It is better then it going in a landfill. Your Ideas are both great ideas. Thank you for your question. And Hey if you’d like to share where that marble is We are looking for a few pieces in this house to redo bathroom counters. Now there’s an idea mosaic counter top made with Marble or Slate. Something to think about.

1. When you find old furniture with good hardware you can use that old hardware such as drawer knobs and pulls to give an existing piece a new look.

2.When breaking up old pieces of stone, marble, slate or other such pieces, lay the piece upside down a board you have place on the ground to break it up on. By breaking it up from the backside, you are not damaging the top side.
Also, make sure to wear protective eyewear as chips can fly up.

3. When going to get your vehicle serviced oil changes and what not always look to see if the shop has any discounts or coupons that you can print out from their web site. It can save you money. I recently had my oil changed and saved about 10 bucks. Hey that’s almost 3/4 tank of gas on my S-10

Hi all it’s Helpful Hank Here

I look back over my life and the many who have passed through it and are still in my life. I think about those who have taught me some pretty valuable lessons whether they knew it or not. The importance of having hope ( The Heart) and the importance of having patients ( The Mind ) are two of the most important ones. Both have saved my life more then once. Kay taught me that if it is impossible to say you can’t then you can’t say it’s impossible. That is hope. My father always said use the right tool for the right job and to never force it because you can ruin it. That is patients. When I did not have both of these things I always found myself either in or drifting towards troubled waters. The problem with getting to close or in troubled water is that it can be double the effort to pull yourself out of them. I think as I get older that I realize that it is a lot of work that I don’t want to do.

I have never been one to toss anyone away. Friends that I have lost contact with over the years I still consider Friends even if they don’t That is just how I am built. I don’t tend to give up on people. I’ve always been that way. In my life thus far I have learned a lot of lessons. Some the easy way some the hard way. But all the lessons I have learned can be summed up with two words Hope and Patients. The very first two people that I learned these to lessons from were my mother and grandmother, amongst many other lessons. My mother and grandmother both taught me that the can be good in anyone and we can find it if we choose. They also taught me that you have to use the right tools for the job and not to force it as well. My mother taught me to cook and my grandmother taught me to bake. From this I learned I needed the right tools for the job and that I had to follow directions. As with anything change happens and we learn to stream line our lives in how we approach it. We learn who we can count on and who we can’t. We learn who is harmful and who is not. Then we make choices, choices of varying degrees. We weight it out figure it out and decide who we can count on or who might be harmful to us given the chance. And sometimes we get it wrong but, if we can learn from the times we get it wrong those can also be very valuable lessons. They can also be very dangerous ones. They can be the ones that take away our hope and patience instead of taking away the lesson of what mistakes not to make we take away the lesson of, Why even bother, or worse, It isn’t even worth it. When you get to this point you have lost all hope and patients. When you do that you stop trying, you stop caring, That’s when you give up and give in. Whether you feel beaten down and become resigned to that or you feel superior to everyone and untouchable. It doesn’t matter you have given up and given in. When we stop feeling for others we can’t really feel anything genuine for or in ourselves. Hope is lost. It is important to find a balance. And we find that balance when we honestly assess the mistakes we have made and move forward in the knowledge that we now how to recognize that mistake and will avoid making it again. And yes sometimes that means we give up and move in a different direction. There are things to be gained from this as well. Sometimes it also means we given in. Again we Assess from what we have learned and experienced. We weigh out the pluses and minuses and make our decision. That’s O.K. because we have honestly looked at the situation and we have chosen the path we chose because we feel it is where we need to be and not because we feel that we have no choice but to be here. There are enough times in our lives that we are forced into boxes that don’t fit why would we want to purposefully do this to our selves? We need to get beyond this type of thinking. One size does not fit all! Sometimes screaming feel as if it is the only option. But is it really? The answer to that is that yes sometimes it is. Screaming isn’t a bad thing. Just scream under controlled circumstances. And what I mean by that is ( and this is nothing new) there is no need to scream at others scream in your car in private in the shower. By all means get it out but don’t take it out on others. We have all heard the say about shit traveling down hill. Why? Why? does it do that? Because there are always those who feel better off then others. The Mistake people make is in thinking that money makes them better off. Can it of course it can but, here’s the thing if your base personality comes from a place of Hope and Happiness you will be happy with a simple life or a life of wealth. You may not want to achieve a higher financial position or you may but the one thing that you will want to achieve is being a better person and learn from your failings and recognized your flaws with the hope that you can change that and knowing it can take time but, also knowing you will have to work at it, having patients in yourself and using the right tools available to you to make that change.

I have always said that we get enough negative thrust upon our lives why open our door and invite it in when we can clearly see it parking it’s car in our driveway? Sometimes we have to lay it on the line and sometimes we have to hold our tongue. Sometimes holding your tongue isn’t a bad thing as long as you can find a positive way to release it outward and not turn it inward. We can’t always say what is on our mind. There are times though that we need to say what is on our minds. We have to be counted which is never to say that ever end justifies it’s mean. This what I’m talking about This is where Hope and patients come in. Hope gives us the ability to see change can happen and the patients we need to find the right tools and reasoning we need to try and bring about that change. We are not always going to be successful. When we are not successful we learn to use new tools that we have been taught can get the job done as well. The internet is a good example of a new tool that has evolved from an old tool, communication. We now communicate in a vastly different manner the we did just 10 years ago. This ability to learn is fueled by hope and patients. Without hope we would fell there is no need. Without patients we would not take the time.

We live in a McDonalds world of instant. Instant satisfaction, instant glory, Instant even,. We take away our uniqueness. We are not always going to be on a level playing field but we can and should treat each other equally, appreciating the differences instead of trying to conform them with little variation. We need to be comfortable in our own differences, accept that while some things can come readily to some and not so readily to others that we still have the ability to achieve what we want it just may take us more time. We need to get comfortable with the fact that not everything should come instantly and easy. That some thing’s, a great many of them are better much sweeter and rewarding when we have worked and earned them. Those rewards come from hope and patients. We had faith that we could get to where we wanted to be and we had the patience to take the time use the right tools and do the job right.

There are many things that can give us our Hope back when we loose it. We don’t often recognize them though do we?

One trick I have learned to do when I drive is to find land marks. Odd ball things that I will remember so that when I pass that way again or come back from going that way I don’t get lost. I guess for me this is part of my hope. What I mean by this is that. When I have lost hope and am trying to find it I find myself keenly aware of the signs that are pointing me towards hope. Like land marks or road markers being aware of these signs can make our journey’s much easier. They can steer us away from roads we don’t want to go down and down the roads we need to go down to find that hope. Sometimes it is a leap of faith. Take our recent election. I am sure there were a lot of people who had to take a leap of faith ( for me it was a no brainier but, everyone is different) on their journey to get hope back, or to find new hope. However one manages to keep their hope and patients alive is what matters, because hope lets us dream of change and patients gives us the ability to want to make that change. One last thing Without Hope and Patience how can you find balance in your life.

Remember we are all imperfectly perfect

1. Helpful Hanks Handy Hint : Grow your own Sugar, Stevia plants can be bought at many nurseries and large hardware chains. All you have to do is grind up the dry leaves to a powder and use in place of sugar It is a challenge to find just the right amount of Stevia to use because it is so highly concentrated. Using the tip of a toothpick to scoop out the powder is a great trick for measuring, and it should prevent you from using too much. You can also mix Stevia powder with water and measure out the drops. The limitation in baking with it is that it will not allow browning to happen and it cannot be used in recipes involving yeast as it will not activate the yeast as sugar does. On the plus side you can use it in almost anything and it is easy to grow and you don’t have to re-plant it every year just cut it back in the fall. It is also pretty frost resistant and is safe for diabetics. Stevia grows well in pots and planters.

These are the one or more word items that put you in the search engines such as Google and Yahoo as well as other search engines. I went to the rally at the courthouse tonight in Palm Springs with my husband Steve. On this eve before the hearing, I was thankful that my husband was not working. (His job keeps him in Florida a lot.) He was able to share this experience with me. We listen to the different speakers speak. From Jenny Foat city council member to couples that have been together over thirty years. I started to reflect back on the relation ship I have with my Husband of almost ten years. (We plan to marry on our tenth anniversary.) I started to think about all those couple that I knew that had been together 10, 20 or more years that never got to marry. I knew a couple in San Jose in the 90’s that had been together 60 years. One past on before the laws had been changed (for that brief period) and we were aloud to marry. Another couple had been together almost 50 years before one passed away. And one of my dearest friend had been with his husband 25 years before his husband passed away back in the late 80’s.

My parents were together 51 years. So it is no surprise to me the value I place on commitment. Because of this Marriage is a Huge deal with me. I have dreamt of the day I walk down the Isle in a white or black tux with family and friends surrounding us. The moment we cut the cake. And all those traditions that go with a wedding day. Today was important. Tomorrow is even more important. Tomorrow history will be made. We will all be a part of this. Whether your marriage minded or a run away bride (or groom) who couldn’t stay far enough away from an alter. This is more then just the right to marry this is about another step towards Total equality. I believe when it comes to equality we should never take a back seat (I ain’t nobody’s Rosa Parks.) and we should never shoot for baby steps. We must walk like Giants and speak with demand and authority in our voice. We must raise our voices all, against inequality. We must bring this battle to victory and then we must take our next Giant step forward. Believe you me this battle is only one giant Step towards Total equality we have many more Giant steps to take before State wide and federally we are equal citizens of this great state and this great nation that seemed to be hijacked for the last 8 years.

We now look at Stonewall as our first call to arms. Out of the Stonewall rights came many great organization and leaders who have dedicated there lives to lgbt rights. Among gay organizations today, there's everything from the Stonewall Democratic Club to the Stonewall Chorale; there's even a bottled water called Stonewall. The word has taken on mythic proportions in lesbian and gay culture. But its widespread appropriation doesn't dilute the importance of what happened in the summer of 1969 in New York City.

The event is still a hot topic of debate in gay circles, with much disagreement about what actually precipitated the violence and who took part in it. One legend holds that Judy Garland's funeral, held June 27 in Manhattan, fanned the flames of gay rage. Other versions of the story claim that dozens of sequined drag queens and a mysterious, unidentified butch lesbian were at the forefront of the street rebellion. But a few facts seem certain.

In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a dingy, Mafia-run "private club" on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village with a predominantly gay clientele. The charge was illegal sale of alcohol. It was the second time that week the bar had been targeted by the police, and other gay bars had also been raided in prior weeks. Police officers lined up the Stonewall's 200 patrons to check identification. Most were free to leave, but the staff, as well as three drag queens and two male-to-female transsexuals, were detained.

Eyewitnesses recalled that the scene outside the bar was at first campy and festive. Patrons were joined by tourists and passers-by, and everyone cheered when a gay person emerged from the bar, dismissed by the police. But when a paddy wagon arrived and the police loaded the bar's staff and the three drag queens inside, the crowd on the street grew surly. One person threw a rock through a window, and eventually garbage cans, bottles, and even a parking meter were used to assault the building. Someone set a fire with lighter fluid. By newspaper accounts, 13 people were arrested and three police officers sustained minor injuries in the confrontation.

Later that night and into Sunday morning, a crowd again gathered in front of the ravaged bar. Many young gay men showed up to protest the flurry of raids, but they did so by handholding, kissing, and forming a chorus line. "We are the Stonewall girls," they sang, kicking their legs in front of the police. "We wear our hair in curls./We have no underwear./We show our pubic hair." Police cleared the street without incident this time, but another street altercation occurred a few days later.

Even more significant, though, was what happened later in the summer. At the end of July, gay activists circulated copies of a flyer calling for a mass "homosexual liberation meeting." The headline of the flyer read, "Do you think homosexuals are revolting? You bet your sweet ass we are!" The alliance that formed from the meeting held on July 24 adopted the name Gay Liberation Front (GLF); among its demands were not only an end to police harassment, but job protection for gay employees, the repeal of sodomy laws, and local and national anti-discrimination laws.

Soon, numerous other organizations and a host of gay liberation publications emerged, first in New York and then across the country. Estimates suggest that, at the time of the riots, there were a few dozen gay organizations in the United States. Within a few years, the number had risen to more than 400.

For we know that, Lord, you are able and you're willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds, and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor, of the least of these, and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that yes we can work together to achieve a more perfect union.

And while we have sown the seeds of greed -- the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.

And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.

Dr. Rev. Joseph E Lowery to give benediction here is a bit of Background on him

While Obama's choice of Rick Warren may have sparked controversy, his pick for the benediction could not have been more fitting of the occasion.
Joseph E. Lowery founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 with Martin Luther King, Jr., and crusaded for civil rights and voting rights in the '50s and '60s. The longtime United Methodist minister is also an outspoken advocate of gay rights. Lowery admits to "a little culture shock" when it comes same-sex marriage, but is clear about his support:

"When you talk about the law discriminating, the law granting a privilege here, and a right here and denying it there, that's a civil rights issue," he explained in 2004, when stating his opposition to state-based initiatives to ban gay marriage and civil unions. "And I can't take that away from anybody."

Lowery was an early Obama supporter, at a time when other high-profile civil-rights players such as Andrew Young and Rep. John Lewis were backing Hillary Clinton. The Lowery and Obama met in 2007 at the the 42nd anniversary of the "Bloody Sunday" march in Selma. Lowery recounted their meeting to columnist Cynthia Tucker:

"He (Obama) showed genuine reverence for the past and a vision for the future....I decided, this guy is for real. I decided he was anointed."

Lowery defended Obama's decision to choose Warren for the invocation, saying, "Oh, I don't think it hurts. I think it'll pass....I think it'll pass even before the ceremony is over."

As we look forward to the inauguration of our new President, Our first African American President. We ask as our new President takes the oath of office that he remember. Remember those of us who are still second-class citizens because we are not allowed to marry

We ask him to remember the thousands of reasons why marriage is so important to us.
We ask him to remember when he last felt discriminated against, and to let that feeling sink in so that he remembers it when he is making decisions that affect our community

We ask him to remember, remember those of us who do not have job protection and can be fired because of our differences.

We ask him to remember, remember those of us who cannot adopt our partners child or cannot adopt a child with our partner. We too have love and guidance to provide a child we to can be excellent parents with a lot to offer too many children that end up receiving often too little.

We ask him to Remember that we too are Americans, We are citizens of the United States of American. We are born American, Immigrated Americans, We are Americans.
We do not deserve to be treated as second-class citizens of our own country.

Let him remember, remember that we are people, We are Doctors, Lawyers, Artist, Waiters, Social Workers, Services personnel, Labors, Business owners, Parents, Couples, Children, that we died for the rights we aren’t getting in our country’s military, that we teach in American schools, yet we are still Second Class Citizens!

We ask that he remember that we are all different. We are all individuals and the fact that we are is what makes us the same. We are all human and deserve to be treated equally.

We will not sit at the children’s table, we will not sit at the back of the bus. We will not be your Rosa Parks, we must be treated equally.

Welcome to Washington! The fun is about to begin, but first, please join me in pausing for a moment, to ask God’s blessing upon our nation and our next president.

O God of our many understandings, we pray that you will…

Bless us with tears – for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women from many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.

Bless us with anger – at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

Bless us with discomfort – at the easy, simplistic “answers” we’ve preferred to hear from our politicians, instead of the truth, about ourselves and the world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

Bless us with patience – and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be “fixed” anytime soon, and the understanding that our new president is a human being, not a messiah.

Bless us with humility – open to understanding that our own needs must always be balanced with those of the world.

Bless us with freedom from mere tolerance – replacing it with a genuine respect and warm embrace of our differences, and an understanding that in our diversity, we are stronger.

Bless us with compassion and generosity – remembering that every religion’s God judges us by the way we care for the most vulnerable in the human community, whether across town or across the world.

And God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office of President of the United States.

Give him wisdom beyond his years, and inspire him with Lincoln’s reconciling leadership style, President Kennedy’s ability to enlist our best efforts, and Dr. King’s dream of a nation for ALL the people.

Give him a quiet heart, for our Ship of State needs a steady, calm captain in these times.

Give him stirring words, for we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

Make him color-blind, reminding him of his own words that under his leadership, there will be neither red nor blue states, but the United States.

Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination, that he might seek to change the lives of those who are still its victims.

Give him the strength to find family time and privacy, and help him remember that even though he is president, a father only gets one shot at his daughters’ childhoods.

And please, God, keep him safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents, and we’re asking FAR too much of this one. We know the risk he and his wife are taking for all of us, and we implore you, O good and great God, to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand – that he might do the work we have called him to do, that he might find joy in this impossible calling, and that in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity and peace.

Visibility

As we continue to fight for our civil rights. The right to marry the right to adopt, equal employment protection for all and, census inclusion. Visibility is key. People need to know who we are. I understand what a struggle it can be to come out to those around you. Some of those people will stand right with you others will walk away. Here is the thing if you do not make yourself visible, then who you are not visible. If we want our civil rights, we have to be visible. We cannot hide in our closets and expect change to happen.

We all need to get involved and fight for our rights and we cannot do this anonymously. If we stand up together, show who we are and get those around us to see who we are then we can make that human connection. When we make that human connection, it is difficult for those we make that connection with to see us as invisible.

We need to get those who believe we do not deserve these rights because of religion to see that this is not a religious issue but a civil issue.

Those who feel we should not adopt need to see that a loving home is a loving home whether there are two moms’ two dads or a mom and dad.

Those who feel we should not marry because marriage is a religious right need to see that it is first and foremost a civil right and that love is love.

We need to be counted we need to be part of the American census report. We need our employers to see us whether we are gay, lesbian or, transgender. We all need to be counted.

Equal protections under the laws that govern America are being denied us and what are we doing about it? Are we letting those who are already visible get the message out or are we making ourselves visible, making ourselves heard, being counted?

We cannot rely on others to get our message out we must put it out there ourselves. When we do not participate in those things that impact our lives, we cannot expect our lives to be impacted the way we want them to impact our lives.

If we remain invisible, we stay invisible until we decide to make ourselves visible. There is no flying under the radar with civil rights. Flying under the radar keeps us invisible.

Get out there make yourself visible. Participate and fight for the civil rights you deserve.

Stop feeling that you do not deserve these civil rights because that is self-hatred. Stop saying I will never have children so adoption rights do not matter. Stop saying I have no desire to get married so marriage equality does not matter to me.

We should never say to ourselves it is not our concern. It is always our concern. If we stop making our civil rights our concern then we say to everyone we do not matter, you can walk over all over me.

We need to make our voice heard our strength felt, our faces visible and, our civil rights guaranteed.

GET INVOLVED!

To those of you who were able to marry. To those of you who wished you had while you had the chance. And to those of you who were planning and are still planning your wedding in hopes of prop eights over turn I have just two words for you “GET INVOLVED!” If you don’t get involved and protect your rights to marry and as married couples you stand the chance of never being able to have a marriage with all it’s State protection and benefits and you stand the chance of never receiving the Federal benefits of marriage. You cannot and should not sit back and rely on others to obtain this right for you. You must get involved. Attend the walks and demonstrations to insure you can stay married. To insure can plan your wedding and get married knowing you will receive all the benefits a marriage provides.

To those who have children have adopted children or are thinking about adopting children. I have two words for you “GET INVOLVED!” Just as the recent election has shown us our right to adopt and provide a loving home for a child whether we adopt from an agency or we adopt our spouses child can be taken away as it was in Arkansas.

To those of you who feel that you are safe from job discrimination I have two words for you “GET INVOLVED!” There are those in our LGBT community that don’t have those rights and need them.

When we sit silent, complacent, hidden we work for those who would prefer to keep us at the back of the bus unseen.

We have seen our rights taken away. We have seen how some ride rough shod over them.

We made great gains in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s why do we want to go backwards? Why do you choose to fall silent? Aren’t you tired of being a second-class citizen? Don’t you want to be equal? Maybe you believe you don’t deserve to be equal.

For those of you who feel the status quo are fine I have seven words for you “SNAP OUT OF IT AND GET INVOLVED!” We must always remember Silence = Death. The death of marriage equality, adoption equality, non-discrimination policies in the work place. The end of our civil rights as lgbt citizens of America.

We are not just making an impact on America when we get involved. We make an impact for equality worldwide. We are not just saying we will no longer sit in the back of the bus in America when we get involved we are say we will not sit in the back of the bus anywhere in the world. We are not just saying our rights here in America are important we are saying our rights are important globally. We as American citizens must realize that when we get involved and make our voices heard that they are being heard globally and that this gives encouragement for those in other countries who are repressed to fight for their rights. The world does look at America and worldviews can shift and change for the better.

For those of you who feel that religion are telling you that you are immoral. I have two words for you. “GET INVOLVED!” Your creator made you in his/her image. Your creator did not make a mistake in creating you. He/She made you with love care and concern for your total health, mentally, spiritual, and, physical. Who you are is not a sin.

To those of you who still don’t get it I have two words for you. “ GET INVOLVED!” then you will see the importance of getting involved and impact that it makes.

Love is Love. It cannot be erased by people who would want us to hide and cower in corners. It can only grow into the strong voice it needs to if we all sing it’s song and join the choir of voices. Smattering of protesters marches to decry Prop. 8

Only a handful of Proposition 8 opponents turned out for protest in Rancho Mirage on Wednesday.

Looking to keep same-sex marriage at the forefront, organizers had anticipated a couple of hundred protesters. The event was the fourth, and smallest, in the Coachella Valley since voters approved the ban on same-sex marriage.

“We're not going to stop doing this,” said Vincent Corrales, the event's organizer. “We're going to keep going until our rights are restored whether it's one person or a 1,000.”

As reported on mydesert.com, protesters started at The River in Rancho Mirage, and marched about a mile to the corner of El Paseo and Highway 111.

Many passers-by honked in support, but some yelled homophobic slurs or quick sermons from their vehicles.

Marriage equality is an issue that resonates with many in the Palm Springs area, which has one of the largest gay populations per capita in the United States. About 1,200 same-sex couples have married in the Coachella Valley since June 17, the first day gays and lesbians could legally marry after the California Supreme Court ruled a 2000 gay marriage ban unconstitutional.

Wednesday's event, Corrales said, was an effort to reach the east valley, the majority of which voted for the marriage ban.

Valleywide, the measure passed with 54 percent of the vote. Only Palm Springs opposed the measure, with nearly 65 percent voting no.

“I didn't go to Palm Springs because that's like preaching to the choir,” said Ron Gilbert, who writes the online blog “Ron's Log.”

“It's down here in Palm Desert where you actually need to reach the Republicans that voted for Prop 8.”

All the protests previously have been held in Palm Springs.

Following the crushing defeat at the ballot box, opponents have protested in the streets and organized a boycott of businesses that supported the initiative. Other demonstrations — one which grabbed national headlines after the crowd destroyed a woman's Styrofoam cross — have attracted 300 or more protesters.

“Though I didn't do more before the election, I'm doing a lot more now,” said Russ Bertlow, a Palm Springs artist whose collection “Marriage Equality and Freedom” will be showcased at the Desert Pride Community Center on Sunday.

“We can still get people to see that marriage is a civil right.”
