Palm Pre GSM In The Wild

While Palm has yet to confirm a European carrier, we do know that they expect to release a GSM Palm Pre sometime later this year. With this video of a Palm Pre GSM surfacing, we might be getting closer to a release date. According to our tipster, the video was shot in Vietnam.

Thanks Enzo!

Palm Pre Sales Exceed 300,000 Says Analyst

According to Edward Snyder, a cell phone analyst with Charter Equity Research, he believes Palm has sold upwards of 300,000 Palm Pre phones. This number is double what most industry analyst have suggested. Snyder points to his sources in manufacturing and retail channles, estimating that Palm is now producing 15,000 units a day and will eclipse 1 million phones delivered to Sprint during the first full quarter of production.

Bluetooth Connectivity Issues Plaguing Some Palm Pre Owners?

There have been reports of Bluetooth connectivity issues happening across our forums and even Palm's own support forum. A moderator on their forums has compiled a list of cars experiencing trouble and the number is at 15 cars. That's hardly a small issue and one that could result in a higher return rate. For those who utilize their in-car Bluetooth system for hands-free, this becomes more of a requirement than a feature. The issue seems to be prominent with the Infinity, but also affects Acura MDX and Land Rover's Ranger Rover Sport. Some users appear able to connect, but then complain of poor audio quality.

Palm Releases OS 1.0.4 Software Update

Palm has released software update 1.0.4 for webOS and the Palm Pre. The download is 12MB and the update takes roughly 10 minutes to complete. To get the update, simply access the Updates app on your Palm Pre. According to Palm, this release addresses several security issues with Palm webOS software. Palm has also set up palm.com/security where individuals can report suspected security issues. While nothing else is listed yet in 1.0.4, you can find the changelog at Palm's website.

Update: This release apparently patches a leak that allowed "homebrew" apps to be installed on a Pre that was not jailbroken.

You can discuss the 1.0.4 software update in our forums.

New Palm Pre Ad Takes on iPhone

A new Palm Pre ad showed up on Sprint's Facebook page that directly attacks the iPhone. The headline reads, "Your iPhone contract is up. Perfect timing." In the Facebook commercial, the focus was on how the Palm Pre can run multiple apps at once, but there was no direct comparisons to the iPhone. This ad changes all that focusing on "things the Palm Pre does that the iPhone can't" and trumpeting the over $1200 in savings over an iPhone contract with AT&T. Sprint also shows an Apple which has been eaten. Clearly, the gloves are off.

[via PreThinking]

$99 Palm Eos To Challenge Apple?

There have been rumblings before about the rumored Palm Eos (codenamed Pixie) that might make it's way to AT&T. RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abrahmsky expects Palm to launch the Palm Eos at $99 sometime later this year. Not only is this half the price of the Palm Pre, the rumored Palm Eos seems to be headed for AT&T. For AT&T customers who are relunctant to switch to Sprint, the Eos would be a viable alternative to the iPhone 3G, which recently saw it's price slashed to $99.

Palm App Catalog Surpasses One Million Downloads

According to Medialets, a NY based mobile analytics firm, the Palm App Catalog hit one million downloads yesterday. It's an impressive number considering just 150,000 Palm Pre phones have been sold and the App Catalog's offerings are limited to roughly 30 applications. The numbers equate to an average of six applications per device. Application releases have been few and far between since the device launched, so these numbers are not likely to shift until more applications are released. Palm has started to ramp up their Mojo SDK (software development kit) early access program, which is great news for end users. The general public release is slated for later this summer.

Of course, limited App Catalog titles is not the only problem. Sprint and Palm continue to suffer with supply issues. Sales numbers alone do not bare out the demand for the Palm Pre. Palm had a self-imposed deadline of June 30th for the release of the Pre, which they met. However, the lack of sufficient inventory to satisfy consumer demand and the paltry selection of apps keeps us wondering if this is the Palm Pre beta launch. The company certainly beat the iPhone 3GS to market and opening weekend for the Palm Pre was a success, but sufficent supply in stores and an increase in applications would certainly help boost download numbers.

[via NY Times]
