Assiniboine Park - Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, English Garden

Today was such a beautiful, sunny, summer day and I took the opportunity to go to the Assiniboine Park here in Winnipeg. There are so many things to do and see even if you want to just relax and watch a cricket match. My main interest today was to go to the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden . It is such a pleasure to look at all these fine sculptures. My photos in no way do the statues justice - that's for sure, but I have included them below. There were so many more sculptures and scenes - but next time. You can also see better pictures by clicking on the links in this paragraph too. While I was there I was lucky enough to sit in and listen to a jazz quartet do a open air show - it was wonderful.

Thought this might make a good 'art' picture, hmm!

This is a Tip-In page for a monthly swap. The theme for this page is Fabulous Women. I chose Celine Dion, mainly because I love her singing and she is Canadian. This page is 6"x6" The images were printed on watercolour paper then coloured with Copic markers.

Steampunk Fat Page 4"x4"

This is a Fat Page 4"x4" done in Steampunk style for a swap at the Outlaw Women Scrapbook Emporium group on Yahoo. I used printed images, coloured with Copic markers then adhered to a 4x4 square, metalic tape was added to the edges. The back was dry embossed using the Cuttlebug then coloured with Copic markers.

Christmas in July

Christmas in July

This is another of the OWSE Events - Christmas in July - challenges. The challenge was to take a paperback book, and make a stylized Christmas Tree. The technique involved cutting the book in half, taking off the covers then folding the pages to get the shape. Then a star was added by attaching it to a wooden skewer. Once this was done the two halves of the book were glued together. I added extra bits to the tree to jazz it up. These were simple foamy shapes from the $ store. Then the whole piece was taken outside to get spray painted with silver paint and a touch of glitter. We also could have used gold spray.

Christmas in July Challenge

This is another of the OWSE Events - Christmas in July - challenges. We were to make a 12 x 12 scrapbook layout using at least two different designer papers and incorporate a Christmas theme. Here I used several different colours of green and green/blue to make the squares for pictures, added some purchased ephermera and distressed with distress ink (shabby shutters and walnut). I fussy cut the bird on the branch and glued everything down. Sorry for the picture quality, the sun was too bright and my camera was low on battery power so I had only one shot - then I tried to tweak the picture to get it to show the true colours - it's close but could be better.

Tip In Page

We are doing a Tip-In Page swap on the Outlaw Womens Scrapbooking Emporium Group. This is the front and the back of the page for my first partner in this swap. My partner chose the theme 'Life Lessons' and her tip-in pages are 5" x 7" with a one half inch left blank on the left side.

Buttons

These three pieces were made in response to a Button Challenge on the Outlaw Women Scrapbooking Emporium group. The first is called Buttonola Arboretium est 2011 and is about 8" x 8.5". A free digital stamp of the tree was printed then the entire page was painted over with Yarka watercolor paints. Once dry markers were used to add doodle elements. Then the buttons were glued on.

The second piece is a card 6" x 5.5" and is another free digital stamp in black. Buttons adhered to top of tree and a punched and pieced flower made and adhered to the bottom. Stamped with the saying "Delight in the little things."

The third piece, is a fun piece, is made from strips of one inch papers in blue and yellow laced to make a checker board - 8 squares across and 8 squares up for a total of 65 squares. Black buttons and Red buttons placed on the starting positionn for a game. The wording is 'Let's Play - Make The First Move'

Fat Page - 4 x 4 - Fairies

This fat page was made for a swap on the Outlaw Women Scrapbooking Emporium Group. Image cutout and then covered with clear gel with a dash of sparkle added along with purchased ginko leaf wings. Placed on a round cutout of a waterfall, and all on a 4x4 square of very light green with green dots cardstock. Charms were added along with tiny rosettes.

Tag - Distressed

This tag was made from tea stained papers set on sack cloth and pasted to a mat board tag. Rosette was my first attempt, I'll get better at it - just need patience. I still have a few pieces of tea stained papers to use and will come up with something else soon (or maybe later).

Tag - Cardboard

This is a tag made from corrugated cardboard, layered with paper that has been tea stained and a rust colored piece of scrap paper. I tried to make a fan fold flower - sort of got it, just have to keep trying.
The tag was made for the group Outlaw Women Scrapbooking Emporium - Cardboard Tag Challenge - June 2011.

Tag - Butterflies and Blossoms

made this tag using a mat board tag. Used distress ink to stamp images fronts and backs - blues, blacks, mahogany, Covered the tags with white acrylic paint (watered down), then used beeswax to adhere the various layers of ribbon and tissue paper to the tag; and used beeswax to adhere the twigs, blossoms and bees to the tag. Punched holes for ribbon to add the little tag with the wording and wound the ribbon through the back and finally tied it off at the top. Rubbed the beeswax surface to give it a bit of a shine.

Paper Shoe

Swap with the group Outlaw Women Scrapbook Emporium, OWSE. Well, when you sign up for a swap, you better be prepared for some challenges if you have never done this type of work before. This is truly what I found when I chose to try to make a paper shoe. I had an idea in my mind of what my paper shoe was going to look like. There were several patterns on the internet I followed and tried out. Instead of looking like a shoe each one ended up looking like floppy butterflies. I decided that I was going to triumph over this hurdle and sat down and researched the archives of exactly how to make a shoe. I looked at old patents for shoes. Plus years ago I sewed a lot and even designed some of my own clothing and for the children. Using this knowledge, I designed a template (I should say several versions). Cut it out and glued it together. This is where you could probably use six pairs of hands when you are twisting really nice paper to fit a small space. So what you see is the result. My Black and Gold speckled Maryjane style pump with lace and pink lining.

Grungy Monday 07: Distress Ink Color Blocking

This my first attempt ever with making an altered tag. I did this using the Distress Ink Color Blocking Technique demonstrated by Tim Holtz in the video tutorial found on the Ranger Ink website. I used the Tim Holtz Distress Inks: Spiced Marmalade, Walnut Stain, Weathered Wood, Peeled Paint, Antique Linen and Old Paper. Once this blocking was down on the surface I used a watered down coating of zinc white acrylic paint to cover everything. Once dry I used the Antique Linen to go over the surface in a few places and used the Weathered Wood on a filigree red rubber stamp I found in my binder of unmounted stamps. The figure in the middle is a collage piece I already had, I just cut out around it and glued it down. The wording: "In all things of nature, there is something of the marvelous, ~Aristotle" is from the Stampin' Up set Something Marvelous. I then glued this finished piece to a piece of green cardstock cut about 1/4" larger all around and using the Weathered Wood distress ink I inked the edges using more for the left bottom corner. On the tag are cutouts on the top and top sides. I used a water brush and filled in the spaces with more of the Weathered Wood distress ink. I added the rust and the green color ribbons and tied a hummingbird to the green ribbon. The hummingbird is from my stash of embellishments that were purchased on eBay from the Orient. So that's my tag, I think I will use this one as a RAK for somebody.

ATCs - Roses in Watercolour

One of the subjects that I wish I could draw and paint better is flowers and especially roses and white flowers. Why this is hard for me I don't know. But I will keep going at it and try to get better. One of the things I have learned though about my drawing and painting is that I tend to 'overdue' the paint to correct mistakes and sometimes mix the wrong colours.

These two ATCs of Roses are already traded to a wonderful lady in Virginia.

Sketchbook Challenge - March - Spilling Over

The March 2011 Sketchbook Challenge theme is Spilling Over. I sketched and then filled in with marker an elderly lady talking on the phone with her good friend and telling her what a horror of a day she had - spilling it all out. The next is a sketched drawing and roughly painted in watercolour of a river/waterfall scene - water spilling over.

Collage Sheet Instructions for our Family Collage Project

Hi Sue, Barb, Tammy and Hannah

Here are the instructions for making the 8x8 collage sheets with the 4" flap on the side for binding. You can use the cardboard from cereal or chip boxes or anything of that type of weight, even file folders. To put the flap on you can glue, staple, rivet or sew the 4x4 piece to the 8x8 piece. It is probably best to make a background to cover all of the 8x8 piece and the 2x4 piece that sticks out. The backs of the sheets should be at least covered in cardstock or some type of material to coordinate with the front of the page. There is no need to collage the back, but you can if you wish. Don't forget to put your name on the back somewhere and the year. There is no need to put any type of holes in the 2x4 flap because we each will do our own binding. So, we make five of these pages, one for you and four out to the rest of us. We make six sets in total. The idea is to make a collage of anything you wish for each set of collages - probably should keep each set in a similar theme. To get ideas for collage work just Google Images on the word 'collage' and you will get plenty of ideas. Here are the diagrams for you to follow.

The first two images are the 4x4 and the 8x8 sheet showing the dimensions and the placement of the flap. The next two just show that I used a cereal box. The third image is the two pieces attached together. The next one is the page covered in cardstock. The last one is an example of a collage in which is simply placed pictures randomly on the scanner and put the page over top without gluing just to show you. So, take a look on the net for ideas and if you have some already then go to it. Have fun.
